How did the wheels fall off so fast!

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

World: The art is fine, but there is a slight change in the linework that feels different and like it's not the same person. The world building here is absurd and ridiculous not in the good way and this is the start of when things start going arwy. The pieces that are newly introduced make no sense and changes the tone of the entire book. I could easily have seen the book being more international cooking competitions and even schools from other countries but to shift towards a noir theme makes the world off kilter and off. The pieces that this story relies on is also used incorrectly with Joichiro who has always been the peak of the mountain for this entire world suddenly just a tossaway, it's trying to sell and create Saiba even as something more fierce but that completely knocks down the entire world building that's been done before and changes focus.

Story: The end of the team battle arc is here and it is here that the logical leaps begin to not make sense at all. Soma as a first seat I can understand if people are allowed to challenge him, but a 16 year old woman as the Headmaster is stupid and makes no sense and immediately breaks the world logic of the world. After that the world just complete gets off the rails. I thought the start of Megumi and SOma going to a hot spring town was a nice little breather and that was the point of this next story, to decompress but nope, the moment the noir stuff happened I know that this book just took a dive off a cliff. This direction makes no sense when this series from the first chapter has always been the idea of Some wanting to beat his father, he's lost 490 times and his dream and is goal was to beat his father and become the chef at Yukihira. The secondary goal was for Soma to find a woman that was worth cooking for. The third is to experience all the foods in the world. The tone was light it was fun and it was hopeful and with this sudden noir turn the book has turned nasty and the tone has shifted completely. To have Joichiro lose off panel and so easily is stupid when this entire world has been set up for him to be the best, and yes the writer is trying to show how awesome Saiba is but honestly that does not matter, the father son relationship and the entire story of the series matters and this action itself is a big fuck you to that main plot. I can talk a lot more about this but it's pointless, I've not had a book take a nose dive like this since I watched Game of Thrones' final season. Yuck.

Characters: What the hell happened to the characters? They feel off. After the great character moments and arcs of the last couple of books this one feels off, the tone is off and the focus is off. Joichiro is used so poorly here, and tossed away when he is the main focus of the Soma's journey, it's so pointless what Tsukuda did with him just to prop up Saiba. The idea of the noir is so stupid. Erina as the Headmaster makes no sense. Why are we not focusing on the continuing development of the Diamond Generation as characters and now having these new pieces and characters that are so out of place tonally suddenly come into play.

Wow this book got bad real fast and completely lost focus of what it's suppose to be.

Onward to the next book!

After last volume's series highpoint, there's a big letdown as the students begin their second year at Totsuki Saryo Culinary Institute. In what almost feels like a soft reboot, they are in new roles with much bigger responsibilities. For a little comedic change of pace, the creator sends Soma and Megumi to a hot spring resort town to play detectives when an inn with a relationship to the school closes under mysterious circumstances. What seems like a one-off adventure actually reveals the set-up for the next story arc, and it is sort of silly.

A fun back-up story features female characters from Nisekoi: False Love, One Piece, Gin Tama, Assassination Classroom, Haikyu!!, and World Trigger undergoing some typical Food Wars fan service as they do a food tasting.

I loved the middle section in this one where Megumi really gets to shine! The beginning was really an extended wrap up of the previous story line, and the ending twist I'm undecided how I feel about--I'll have to see how it plays out in the next part of the story.

What really drags the rating down is the nasty and inappropriate little 'extra' story at the end. Ick.

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Sōma!, Vol. 31 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (263–271) of the on-going manga series.

The aftermath of the Régiment de Cuisine is briefly explored in the first chapter of the tankōbon and slowly revealed through the next arc of the series. Azami Nakiri is stripped of his title as director and leaves and the Council of Ten Masters members under his administration lose their seats. Furthermore, Senzaemon Nakiri decides not to resume his role as headmaster and officially accept his retirement, but appoints Sōma Yukihira as the First Seat and Erina Nakiri, under Soma's suggestion, as the new director of Tōtsuki Culinary Academy as his last duties. Finally, all students expelled by Azami Nakiri and Central Gourmet Institution are allowed to return if they so wish.

Under the Erina Nakiri administration, the new Tōtsuki Council of Ten Masters is as followed: Sōma Yukihira (First Seat), Satoshi Isshiki (Second Seat), Terunori Kuga (Third Seat), Akira Hayama (Fourth Seat), Ryō Kurokiba (Fifth Seat), Alice Nakiri (Sixth Seat), Takumi Aldini (Seventh Seat), Etsuya Eizan (Eighth Seat), Nene Kinokuni (Ninth Seat), and Megumi Tadokoro (Tenth Seat).

A new story arc starts four months later and Sōma and his contemporaries have become second year students. Le Cuisiner Noir has infiltrated Japan and it is up to Erina Nakiri to stop it and in order to do that she unleashes her Council of Ten Masters to investigate.

Le Cuisiner Noir are a mysterious group of underground chefs who dabble in intimidation, kidnapping, sabotages, and to achieve an end, and are considered an illegal band of dark chefs. The Noir's exact goal is unknown at this point, but by the end of the tankōbon it is revealed who their leader is – Asahi Saiba.

Saiba is the maiden name of Jōichirō Yukihira – Sōma's father. To get to the bottom of this, Sōma calls his father and it is revealed that Asahi Saiba is his other son.

This tankōbon is written by Yūto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki. It is a start of a new year and a new problem. At first it seems like a new renaissance for Tōtsuki Culinary Institute, but it is only temporary as Le Cuisiner Noir has centered in Japan. This new threat of rouge and underground chiefs are rather interesting. However, it is their leader Asahi Saiba that makes it even more interesting. He is the half-brother of Sōma Yukihira and has done something that he has never done before defeat their father, Jōichirō Yukihira in a shokugeki.

All in all, Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Sōma, Vol. 31 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

I like seeing Tadokoro take charge and show her stuff, it’s cool! I am also loving Soma’s undercut 🥰🥰🥰

Also, I can’t believe Soma has another brother?!!! Sometimes I think his (barely there) relationship with his father would not be an ideal situation for me at all 😅😭

I’m intrigued on how they’re keeping it fresh. The references to French Noir was pretty cool as well. I don’t know if I want ALL the rest of them this way though, but new references for each would be fun.

Well, as I continue reading this manga, I can feel that it is the time for this manga comes to an end. The story begins to derail, and it's getting feeble. Please end this manga before it brings more damage to the story. It was a great cooking manga at the beginning. I used to love this manga until the previous volume. It's showing its age, and sadly, it's not ageing well.

Zwraca to uwagę nowych władz Akademii i nowej elitarnej dziesiątki.

The aftermath of the Regiment de Cuisine and I wasn't sure how the author would top that high note. As the cover says, everyone is moved up a grade and the power hierarchy has shifted.

Soma and Megumi go to a hot spring resort to investigate mysterious closings and instead find the evil love child of Kurokiba and Eizan. Japan is being invaded through its culinary world and you'll never guess who's behind it... or what he manages to do.

Also, there's an extra chapter featuring heroines from multiple Shonen Jump titles. They break every fourth wall and yes... these girls have foodgasms. It's awkward.

This series has 36 volumes.

Now that the big "philosophy of cooking" arc is over, what comes next, after the good guys have returned the school to being a place to get a quality education? Of course, the shokugeki get completely out of hand, as everyone challenges everyone else, but something else is going on. A mystery is taking place, one that involves long-standing country inns renowned for their hospitality, along with a mysterious influx of foreign chefs. The new Council of Ten has to go out to investigate, of course, and Megumi gets her chance to shine, after not being able to do so in the big competition.
Still, the new characters brought in are very much out of the blue, so I have no idea where this story is going.

The outlandish state of the Totsuki Institute is weird, but it turned our protagonists into globe-trotting super-chefs? In the span of four months (the series finally got its obligatory shonen time skip) even Tadokoro proves to be a prodigy, turning her "home cooking" love into... travelling to your country, going to your home, and stealing your cooking? This whole thing turns into a murder mystery, then an Archer parody of our characters running around rounding up noirs (wow having the cast cry about the criminal "black" chefs is not a good look).

And it just keeps going.

The more I read the more scared I got.

Then you get to the final couple of chapters and twist reveals.

Oh.

Oh no.

Oh no no.

How did this series get even worse?

New director of the Totsuki Institute sends Soma and Megumi on a mission to a rural hot springs town to investigate the sudden closure of an inn with close ties to the institute. This is definitely a change in direction for the characters, but I found it an interesting departure, even though I'm not sure how I feel about the final revelation. But there are some really great Megumi moments here, and I'm looking forward to seeing how Soma deals with .

I dunno, this story is a little weird, but I'm on board for now!

Four months after the Regiment de Cuisine has ended, Soma and Megumi are sent to a hot springs to find out why an inn has mysteriously shut down.

2.5 stars - that summary shows what an uncomfortable wrench the storyline has taken. Why are they investigating a hot springs resort? I wanted to see the crew become second-years and begin to enjoy being the new Council of Ten. The 'noir' development seems too dark for this series and the reason the new character is in charge seems to negate the build-up of all the previous books. I'm crossing my fingers but this is my least favorite volume so far.

I really enjoyed the conclusion of the Azami Administration arc of this series, so I’m honestly really disappointed with the direction it’s taking. It should have just packed it in when the Yukihara’s group won the team Shokugeki - it would have ended the series on such a high note.

Instead, the story is being dragged out to introduce this new arc involving an underground culinary world where chefs cater to gangs and criminals. I honestly didn’t care for it at all. Also, the way Jouichiro is thrown away so easily when he’s been built up to be the end-all-be-all of chefs was ridiculous (even for this series).

I’m going to continue because I know the series is complete at 36 volumes, but I don’t expect to enjoy this new arc or the direction of the series overall.

A new arc dawns at the Totsuki Culinary Academy. The first years are now second years. This volume is essentially a bridge, letting the readers catch up to time-skip and see how things are with everyone. The new arc begins with Souma and Megumi getting sent off to look into why a hot springs hotel with a long history suddenly closed up.

The story takes an abrupt turn in volume 31. The intensity of the battle between the resistance and central is over and order has been restored at the Totsuki Academy. Soma and Megumi are sent out to find out why a respected resort closed suddenly. The story starts out as a light hearted mystery and then things take a turn. Not sure about this upcoming arc but I just can't put these books down!

The fight for the school is over and the resistance has won. Things seem peaceful. Too peaceful. I know this series is a hearty 36 volumes so what is going to keep it going? Well some new group of food vigilantes run by a “saiba” is on the loose. Also the cute combo story at the end was adorable.

What?? The last volume was such a satisfying culmination of the last story arc and now we get this noir detectives crap?? And 4 crucial months of the resistance team coming into their seats on the Council are just glossed over? So disappointing.
