Now this book makes sense, to me. It is not a diet book but rather a lifestyle guide on how to manage your weight, and your health, by eating low- carb, and low sugar. Unlike, at least to my understanding of keto diets or even keto cycling, this is not a high fat emphasis. That alone makes me so much more comfortable.

This book starts by the nutritionist author explaining how our western society ended up in this obesity crisis by eating low fat to lose or maintain a healthy weight, all while being hoodwinked by hidden sugars in carb laden foods.

Many of the Atkins principles are akin to keto, but the nutritional guidelines are slightly different. Having said that, the Atkins 20 program is pretty much the same as keto and intended for those who need to lose lots of weight. The Atkins 40 program is for those who want to lose lesser amounts of weight and the Atkins 100 is like an adjustment cycle thereafter during maintenance. Each of those numbers is a reference to the amount of carbs you should be consuming. You can up your carbs more to accommodate your own maintenance program. You can then decrease carbs after a holiday weekend or vacation where food was a focal point. It certainly seems logical and sensible.

The author goes on to explain how to get started, including foods to eat, and the list is huge, and foods to avoid, and remove from your house before you even start. She explains the good fats and bad fats, the good vegetables and fruits, and the not so good ones ( or at least the ones to avoid at the onset). This seems to be a valuable way to get your whole household onto healthy eating without sacrificing flavor or without being hungry. No sugar or carb cravings to contend with.

She goes on to provide a two week menu to get you started, and recipes with no special ingredients. Nothing that you can’t find at a typical grocery store, even a minimalist one. And recipes appear to be easily modified for any phase of the Atkins diet.

With this way of eating, this lifestyle, I am convinced I can accommodate the varying concerns in my household of those who need to lose a few more pounds than others while keeping everyone on the same menu, and not having to cook two or three different meals at the same time...Big bonus!

I read this out of curiosity - mainly because a family member has been a staunch Atkins supporter and I've seen the amazing results she's had in following Atkins (probably for more than 15 years she's used Atkins). I'm very hesitant to recommend diet related books, because I truly believe that one needs to find what works for themselves. Unfortunately, Atkins didn't work for me, but this book had some great reminders of general clean eating that I follow. I believe that the low sugar that Atkins adheres to is very important for everyone to keep in mind (although how hard is it to give up gummy bears?!)

Atkins' Nutritional's Colette Heimowitz has updated their diet regime to put more of an emphasis on hidden sugar avoidance to combine with the 'low card' regime that made Dr. Atkins famous. The book is beautifully laid out - from full color photographs to a very professional presentation of the discussions and recipes. To modernize the program, readers are presented with three plans: Atkins 20, Atkins 40, and Atkins 100 (referring to the amount of carbs in the day).

The book breaks down into two parts - Eat Right, Not Less and Let's Get Cooking. The first part's chapters include: The hidden sugar effect, How Atkins works, Let's get started, Atkins your way (20, 40, 100), Living a low-Ccarb and low-sugar Lifestyle (small changes equal big results). The second part of the recipes breaks down as follows: Breakfast, Snacks and sides, Soups and stews, Salads, Appetizers, 15-minute meals, One-pot meals, Just desserts. There are several nicely laid out appendices at the end: Atkins 20, Level 1 acceptable foods, Atkins 20, Level 2 acceptable foods, Atkins 20, Level 2 acceptable foods, Atkins 40, acceptable foods, Products for your low-carb lifestyle, and Scientific studies supporting Atkins 20, 40, and 100.

The discussions are what you will find in most diet/nutrition books: watching out/removing hidden and non-hidden sugar foods. Avoiding processed foods. The nutritional, health, attitude benefits of eating better. How to read nutritional labels, dispelling myths of fat, and the importance of vegetables in every meal are covered. Better family eating and tips for eating out.

The plans themselves are broken down by how strict a regimen you want or need to create your new lifestyle. The Atkins 20 has the most constraints because you are sticking to only 20 grams of carbs but it will also produce the greatest results. But others may wish to start a less restrictive diet and ease into or out of the other plans. The author recommends that those with over 40 pounds to lose, start with the Atkins 20. Those with less than 40 pounds start with Atkins 40. And for those who want to make smaller changes and start slower, there is Atkins 100.

There are suggested plans for eating for the day and then the rest of the book includes the recipes. Each recipes is three color and with numbered small steps. They include net carbs amount, serving size, time (active and total), and calories. A small pull out also lists fiber, protein, fat. A short introduction to each recipe item is included and why that recipe is useful/tasty/its history is discussed. Many recipes have a full page photograph of the final result. The type is huge, each recipe full page and very easy to follow. The ingredients list is in italic and bold font and clearly separated to make them easy to read. In all, the large format of the recipes, large font, clean layout with plenty of white space, use of different colors and italics, make following and creating menu items easy.

The author's tone is very no-nonsense and up front. It is written by a clinician who has spent her career working directly with people and their nutritional issues. One important deviation from most modern nutritional programs is that this plan doesn't discourage the use of artificial sweeteners or eating sweet items (many authors today feel that artificial sweeteners, even Stevia, create problematic cravings and prevent people from lowering sweetness values to where they don't need to sweeten everything any more). There is also no discussion of fitness or exercise.

The recipes are what you would expect - everything from cinnamon waffles to an apple crumble dessert that doesn't have apples in it. Along with the recipes are guidelines for eating out and how to make the best of various ethnic dinners such as Japanese, Mexican, and Italian.

In all, a beautifully presented nutrition book that is easy to follow. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Great reference guide for people like me who's been doing Atkins on and off for years. Good easy to prepare recipes even for non-cookers. Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of the current flavor trend towards spicy foods that's sweeping American.

OK...so in fair game to the author, she does seem to write exclusively on Atkins. On that note, I felt like I was reading an Atkins infomercial. As I wandered into the recipe section, I have seen the same recipes in oodles of other cookbooks. I did walk out with a couple of handfuls, but not enough to warrant the book's purchase.

This book was so much better than Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, I recommend you read this over that, especially as a follow up to Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It.

The beginning of this book was mostly an overview of Atkins, what happens to your body on a low carb vs high carb diet, the different options (20, 40, or 100 — the last one not being one the website will have info on) and what they look like in practice, which (as with Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution) I enjoyed reading in a book rather than online because it seemed a better way to communicate the steps. The end of the book was the list of "acceptable foods" along with portion size and carbs in that portion size. The middle, which was the bulk of the book, was recipes. I've not made any yet but I did save lots of them for later and was pleased by the variety of recipes included, especially the sections on fast meals and on family meals mostly using a slow cooker.

The tone of the book was inviting and encouraging, without any of the preachiness that turned me off about Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. There are plenty of substitutions, honest talk about still wanting desserts or making mistakes, and the author just feels very inviting — like meeting someone for lunch and having them tell you about a low carb life rather than reading a book pitching you it.

Do note, however, that if you read this book using Overdrive like I did, the app might freak out and refuse to turn pages. It really annoyed me while reading this until I realized that the only place I could click to definitely turn the page was the lower right corner with the pages left in this chapter counter. That's not this book's fault that Overdrive did that but it is also the only book I've seen Overdrive struggle with so damn hard.
