Dear Reader,

Montana has provided the setting for some of my favorite stories. In the late 1980s I wrote Tender Trap and Aftermath featuring Denver and Colton McLean—two brothers returning to their family ranch after years away, confronting the secrets left behind. I’m thrilled that they’re now available in one volume, with a striking new cover and title, Backlash . . .

The ranch country of Montana is beautiful, unforgiving, and for Colton and Denver McLean, filled with a whole lot of bad memories. It’s been seven years since a fire claimed their parents’ lives and drove both brothers away. Now their uncle’s death has brought them back to a place where loyalty and love runs deep—but so do grudges.

Suspicion still swirls about what caused that tragic fire. It created a rift between Denver and the foreman’s daughter, Tessa Kramer. Now Tessa hopes to buy the ranch, if Denver and Colton will agree to sell, but the property is beset by problems. A prized stallion disappears. Other horses start falling sick. Someone seems determined to disrupt—or destroy—the McLean family’s legacy by any means necessary. And finding answers will turn this homecoming into a time of reckoning with enemies past and present . . .

I hope you enjoy coming back to Montana with me!

Lisa Jackson is the number-one New York Times bestselling author of over ninety-five novels, including the Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya Series, the Pescoli and Alvarez Series, the Savannah series, and numerous stand alone novels. She also is the co-author of One Last Breath, Last Girl Standing, and the Colony Series, written with her sister and bestselling author Nancy Bush, as well as the collaborative novels Sinister and Ominous, written with Nancy Bush and Rosalind Noonan. There are over thirty million copies of her novels in print and her writing has been translated into twenty languages.

Before she became a nationally bestselling author, she was a mother struggling to keep food on the table by writing novels, hoping against hope that someone would pay her for them. Today, neck deep in murder, her books appear on The New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly national bestseller lists.

With dozens of bestsellers to her name, Lisa Jackson is a master of taking readers to the edge of sanity—and back—in novels that buzz with dangerous secrets and deadly passions. She continues to be fascinated by the minds and motives of both her killers and their pursuers—the personal, the professional, and the downright twisted. As she builds the puzzle of relationships, actions, clues, lies, and personal histories that haunt her protagonists, she must also confront the fear and terror faced by her victims and the harsh and enduring truth that, in the real world, terror and madness touch far too many lives and families.

Since I've read and thoroughly enjoyed many books by Lisa Jackson, I was eager to see this new book. However, this book is actually a reissue of two romance novellas that she wrote and published in the 1980's. One of things that really jumped out me while I was reading these books were how much we rely on cell phones today. Much of the drama in these two connected romances were caused by not being able to reach the other by phone! Readers today may not recognize this as contemporary romance as the characters discuss long distance phone calls, answering machines and fortunately even the violence in Northern Ireland that threatens the hero in the second novella. Perhaps it was the dated feel of these stories, but I struggled to maintain an interest in these characters and their story. Fortunately, I can definitely see how Lisa Jackson has certainly grown as an author since these two were published.

I usually love reading Lisa Jackson books for the mystery and suspense and keeping me on the edge of my seat. This book was far from what I was expecting from such a talented author. It was a story full of romance and second chances not mystery/suspense. I actually skimmed 1/2 of the book because it was just plain slow and boring. Would definitely not recommend. Thank you netgalley for letting me give an honest review of this book.

Ugh. Read as much as I’m going to (about 100 pages). DNF. I didn’t expect great literature, just a fast paced, entertaining mystery. Instead it was a “romance,” if you can call a novel wherein an immature man with little to no impulse control trembles and groans and moans about frustrated desire, a man who uses his physicality to overpower and intimidate a woman (throwing her over his shoulder, painfully backing her into a tree, grabbing and mauling her when she’s clearly said no) a “romance.” It was appalling, and it concerns me that young women and men will read this and possibly believe that that kind of behavior is attractive and passionate. WTF.

Backlash is a reissue of two books in one volume by Lisa Jackson written 30 years ago. The books are 'Aftermath' and 'Tender Trap'. They feature two brothers who return to Montana reluctantly to tend to their parents' ranch. Both left lovers behind years before so both are stories of second chance romance. I enjoyed both although they are somewhat dated and the endings were rushed.

In this release bu Lisa Jackson, Backlash is a re-release of previous novels, Tender Trap and Aftermath. In the first book, Denver McLean returns home because his uncle died and left his ranch to him and his brother Colton. Denver is not happy with this because his history is tragic. Seven years previously there was a fire and his parents died, and he was seriously injured. Meanwhile, his old flame, Tessa Kramer, wants to buy the ranch. Thing is, Colton is nowhere to be found, so Denver cannot sell the ranch.

Denver has business in LA and he really wants to get back to it. However, he is drawn to Tessa and that changes his perspective. While making his decision there are problems with the property, especially when a prize stallion disappears. Also, some horses become ill. So, something definitely is going on that might hinder the success of the ranch.

In the second story in this omnibus, Colton returns to the ranch when he is seriously injured. Things are not easy for Colton. For one reason there is Cassie Aldridge. Several years previously, they had a brief fling, and it so happens that Cassie still loves Colton. As far as Colton is concerned, he still desires Cassie, but he isn't ready to have a relationship. There are definitely problems. For starters, a horse named Black Magic is missing. In addition to that, Colton's family is feuding with Cassie's family. So a relationship would be very difficult. Nonetheless, the heart wants what the heart wants when it comes to Colton and Cassie.

As I read this book, I admit that it was a read that I couldn't engage in. I felt that it dragged quite a bit. Quite naturally, I was rooting for the couples to find love. As far as mystery and intrigue were concerned, it was a bit lacking. But, I adore Lisa Jackson, so I worked hard at reading this book and I am eager to read her next release, Paranoid.

Many thanks to Zebra and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided by the Author and Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an fair and honest review.

1989 was a world away and a genre away from what Lisa Jackson writes these days. I usually love reading this old stuff. They shows me an authors growth and progression, even though these books can still be intense and filled with angst, just like the plots that now make up the romance genre. Both of these books follow a similar formula: Teen love gone wrong; two brothers who flee the ranch and small town; Brothers come home and rekindle romance with teen love; mystery-lite element.

AFTERMATH — Tessa was 19 and in love. On a horseback ride she gave her all to handsome Denver McLean only to have him desert her without a word after a fire leaved him with scars, his parents dead and suspicion hanging over Tessa's father.. Now Denver is back after seven years. His outward scars from are healed, but inside . . . What returns is a cold, embittered stranger, but Tessa only remembers the love she still holds in her heart. Denver is still physically drawn to Tessa, but trust - that's another matter. 3-Stars

TENDER TRAP - Colton McLean is a world renowned photojournalist, now. At 21 he just wanted to see the world and be anywhere but the McLean Ranch in small town Three Falls, MT. His sexual encounter with hot 17 year old Cassie Aldridge sacred the heck out of him. He discovered deep feelings for her, then she thought she was pregnant and when a fire killed his parents, Colton ran. After suffering a gunshot to his shoulder, he's back to recuperate and reevaluate. He also can't help but rekindle his love affair with the now sexy town Veterinarian, Cassie. Still a lot to resolve between these two and one of the biggest obstacles is the hatred Cassie's father has toward the McLean family and Colton's suspicion that Ivan Aldridge is responsible for the disappearance of Denver's prize stallion. 3-Stars

I’m not sure whether I didn’t read the blurb at all or just skimmed through it but this book was not what I expected it to be. I read a couple of books by this author and generally liked them, I thought this time that I was requesting a mystery and it turned out to be the kind of romances I don’t like to read.
It is actually a reissue of two books published separately in the eighties collected together in the same edition. From my humble point of view that wasn’t a good decision.
The first story was relatively bearable although it felt composed mainly of different variations of the same kind of scenes and it annoyed me. The story was by no means unique, and i had to skip many parts. It was mostly a 2 Stars story for me.
Now the second book, which is set in the same place and featuring characters related to those of the first story, was just not good enough, I really felt like reading the exact same story as the first one with just different names. Even the “twists” felt just thrown into the story.
I thought I would give it all 2 Stars, just because I finished it but then I changed my mind. It was disappointing and I was annoyed while reading it. I’m just sorry I didn’t check the plot summary better as i normally wouldn’t read this type of stories.

Thank you NetGalley, the publisher and author for this copy in exchange of an honest review.

I DNF'd this shortly after starting. Just wasn't my writing style. This was my first time reading a Lisa Jackson novel. I gave it a solid try, but couldn't get through it. It may be because it's an older novel and reads like that.

Dear Reader,

Montana has provided the setting for some of my favorite stories. In the late 1980s I wrote Tender Trap and Aftermath featuring Denver and Colton McLean—two brothers returning to their family ranch after years away, confronting the secrets left behind. I’m thrilled that they’re now available in one volume, with a striking new cover and title, Backlash . . . I was lucky enough to get an arc of this book and enjoyed it Tessa was 19 and in love. On a horseback ride she gave her all to handsome Denver McLean only to have him desert her without a word after a fire leaved him with scars, his parents dead and suspicion hanging over Tessa's father.. Now Denver is back after seven years. His outward scars from are healed, but inside . . . What returns is a cold, embittered stranger. I am a hopeless romantic because I loved how Tessa saw Denver as the boy she remembered. I also enjoyed that the book had a resolution and that it has a nice tight conclusion with a few twists. Then you have Aftermath which deals with Colton and Cassie and this one I had a harder time wrapping my head around. Not because the relationship wasn’t believable but because Colton was such a hard character for me to enjoy in the first book. After a gun shot wound, he comes back home and Cassie is back in his life and he is not sure that it is something he wants or can handle. While I do not want to give away the story the crafty back story helps the reader understand there past. I have read many Lisa Jackson books and gifted more then my share. This one I just had a hard time connecting with. All and all a 3 star read.

These two stories are re-issues, but I always enjoy stories by Lisa Jackson. Denver and Colton have had their lives and family torn apart. Both leave home after a tragedy and have no intention of ever going back. There is a lot of suspicion going around about who started the fire that injured Denver and killed his parents. Colton blames Tessa and her father. Denver was just getting ready to propose to Tessa when the fire happened and then he just left town without a word. Seven years later he is back to decide what he and his brother are going to do with the ranch. Colton can't be found, but Tessa still wants to buy the ranch. Then Denver will be out of her life for good. That's what they all want, right? Will Colton come home?

When Colton finally comes home, it is to recuperate from an injury. While Denver and Tessa are in California wrapping up Denver's business, their prize stallion goes missing. It has happened before, but Colton knows that his neighbor must have taken the horse. He wants to confront his neighbor, but he will have to see Cass. The families have been feuding for years and Colton isn't a favorite of the neighbor. Not after what he did to Cass. Colton finds that he still cares for Cass after all these years, but does she feel the same. She has every right to be made at him but he just wants to call a truce and that their fighting will stop. Can that be? Can they at least be friends?

I loved this book! I loved Denver and I hated how bitter he was towards Tessa and her father. I love how after he comes back and discovers Tessa is running the farm and how she has bought her own horses. I hate how he treats her and her father badly and blames them for the fire that burned down part of the farm years ago. I love how he forgives Tessa and how they finally get the truth. I hate that it was Tessa's brother who was responsible. I love how they become engaged and get married. I loved Colton and definitely thought he was an asshole at the beginning. I love how Cassie was able to deal with him until he pulled his head out of his ass. I hate that he still hated Cassie's dad and how her dad hated him until they got married. I hate how the horses die because Cassie's dad stole one to breed his horse with. I loved the ending and how everyone was happy. 10 stars!

Enjoyed the first half of Backlash. Tessa and Denver where believable characters. Their love story was to an extent believable. Tessa' love for her horse's is wonderful. The sacrifices she is willing to make with them for her true love are heart wrenching.

The second half of the story is almost a carbon copy of the first half. Except it involves Denver's younger brother, Colton and his first love Cassie.

It was a refreshing change of pace to have the country setting. I will be looking for more books by Lisa Jackson. Thanks netgalley for the early edition read, in exchange for an unbiased review.

Backlash is comprised of two stories, Aftermath and Tender Trap, written in the 1980s. Both are second chance romance stories involving two brothers who return home to Montana after 7 years. Each has an old flame with a broken heart. Will the brothers find love again, or is it too late? Both stories are engaging and entertaining. The characters are likeable and relatable. Overall a good read of some different type stories from the author. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Normally I like Lisa Jackson's books and rarely post a review but was so disappointed with this book that I am posting. First off so many inaccuracies when it comes to the veterinary character.. A vet doing large animal work wearing a skirt for one. For another there is no controversy over the Strangles vaccine. For another why would a vet comment that she doesn't want a horse to get dehydrated when she could tube with electrolytes or give intravenous fluids or refer to an emergency center. Another... client confidentiality. While she could state that she knows of strangles in the area she could not say what client has it due to ethics, privacy laws and vet med regulations. Also sending someone for towels when a horse is foaling is odd? Maybe he should have boiled some water at the same time because that's what they did in the 18th century. Oh yes and soaker suits and gloves prevent infection in the horse and are generally worn by vets. Where is her medical equipment and kit. Maybe it was too difficult to carry with her skirt. While creative license is expected in a book some authenticity and accurate portrayal of a profession is expected. Also where it comes to horsemanship and riding lots of inaccuracies there. These are portrayed as expensive horses and jumping on and galloping at night well that just strikes any person with even a basic knowledge of horses as stupid. Slapping a horse on the rump that is trying to nip or kick well no horseman would ever do that. Most horses are trained and wouldn't nip or kick and if they did it wouldn't be deemed as a feisty or silly horse it would be trained, hopefully kindly, not to do these things.
I am really wondering whether kindle was a good investment as it seems there are very few good books on kindle and that they are always overrated by 3 stars or so. Uggh!!

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book

two stories back to back, a re-release of books first published in the 80s...no internet or mobile phones

two brothers estranged from each other, their parents killed in a fire that ended with one of the brothers nearly dying and needing plastic surgery

the other brother went on to become a photo journalist in dangerous places, he had never been home since the fire that killed his parents

each story is about the brother how they reconcile their lives and come back to the ranch where it all started

it well written but it shows it age from back in the 80s but enjoyed nonetheless

Groan!! I thought I was buying a suspense novel! The characters in this ridiculous 'romantic' novel were immature, narcissistic and unbearably shallow.. The men were cowards who enjoyed pushing women around. In actuality, this wasn't a single book but 2 books that mirrored each other so much they were identical; same shallow characters, same emotionally stunted women, same destructive men, identical weak families..I could go on and on but I'll do what the author should have, but never did, I will spare you from the agonizing experience of repetition.

I had a hard time getting into this book and never finished it. I got up to page 100 and can’t finish it. I love Lisa Jackson but this is a reissue of stories she wrote in the 1980’s. I love her new works but the old reissued books are boring and I know she had evolved so much as a writer since she started. I wish they would really mark these reissues since I have bought a few and couldn’t finish any of them.

This was much different than what I am used to with any Lisa Jackson book that I have read thus far. From what I understand this is two books from her earlier works that she reworked into one book. This was a lot more "romance" heavy than her usual mystery/thriller/with a touch of romance that I'm used to. Not to say that that is the main reason I didn't like it. Far from it. It was more so that the romance portrayed felt very toxic - in the first part more so than the second. The second half romance mainly had a trust, age, and miscommunication issue to stir up the angst - usual. However, the first part showcased a lot of themes that suggested that the two in the relationship had no business being together - and not in a "forbidden love" kind of way. Literally at one point, the main male - Denver - made a comment to Tessa, his main love interest, that at that point, he could have r*ped her, but he didn't - as if it was a pro for him? She would repeatedly tell him that she wasn't interested or that she didn't want to engage in sexual activity with him and he continued to ignore her? It was very odd that she still wanted to be with him considering he never seemed to care about her feelings or about what she wanted. He would also engage in these acts at the most random times - mainly when they were arguing. I know she was going for the "fight, fight, kiss, kiss" trope, but it always felt really off because he was usually being really mean to her before hand and during, when she would say no, he wouldn't stop? The lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers trope can be done really well, even with morally grey characters, but this just wasn't handled in the proper way.

This is two novellas wrapped into one book, each about a brother. The first novella is about Denver returning to reclaim his uncle's ranch after his demise. Eager to sell and return back to California as fast as he can, Denver crosses paths, and opinions, with Tessa, one of the ranch managers and his ex love. Their proximity brings on a slew of complexities and draws their attraction to each other. The second half of the book focuses on Colton. His return from Ireland leads to him helping out on the ranch while his shoulder begins healing. After their prized stallion goes missing, Colton approaches Cassie and her father, their bitter rivals, blaming them for the horse theft. Stunned at his sudden appearance and accusations, Cassie confronts Colton about the missing stallion and their past, complicated history together.

For both stories, the plot is very basic and holds little to no way to keep the reader involved in the mystery/intrigue. Overall, the characters have such complex back stories but there is not really any development for them and they mostly fall flat. I am also not a fan of the pregnancy trope and how it was portrayed in both stories. The big reveal is only at the very end of the stories, with no suspicion or clues leading up to it, making the conclusion just that.... A simple ending.

I also found both female MCs to be whiny and annoying, Cassie even moreso than Tessa. (03/2024)

I got about 5 chapters in and had to DNF. The story has a wonderful set up- you have a mysterious ranch fire that takes the lives of our lead character's parents; There are various suspects around who could've started it with plenty of hidden agendas and secrets. Sounds like a solid suspense, no?

But sadly, all of that is disappointingly dismissed as background fluff to ROMANCE. Yeah, this is a romance novel disguised as a suspense/thriller. There's lots of pining, yearning, and angst and I probably could've been OK with it had not all the scenes seemed so recycled.

Characters fight, then tease, then fight, then tease, then fight and well...you get the picture. I honestly was exhausted by Chapter 5. The writing is GOOD and Lisa Jackson makes the setting come alive with her simple but vivid descriptions, but the nonstop pawing and cringy emotional outbursts just isn't for me.

I wish they would've just marketed this for what it is- a romance- instead of a thriller. Even the synopsis on the back cover put more focus on the more "thriller-Esque" aspects of the plot.

Yes, these are two 1980s romance novels repackaged as one big story- so it's safe to say the romances are very archaic so best not to read through 2020s lenses. If you're into that sorta "Big aggressive man puts small and frail woman over his shoulder" type of stuff, then hey, enjoy.

But if you're looking for an actual thriller? Keep it moving.

There are two books in this one. The first is Aftermath and deals with the aftermath of a barn fire that claimed the parents and several horses belonging to Denver and Colton McLean. They both left the area soon after and the ranch was run by Curtis Kramer and his daughter Tessa. Tessa loved Denver but he would not see or talk to her. Now he was back after seven years and wants to pick up where they had left off but she thinks he will return to LA and leave again. The second book is Tender Trap and is about the love between Colton McLean and veterinarian Cassie Aldridge. She was madly in love with him at 19 and thought she was pregnant. He offered to marry her and then found out she was not pregnant and though she was conning him. He left to travel the world as a photojournalist and returned home seven years later after he was shot. He found peace in the area he had left and knew part of that was due to Cassie. She had never left his mind and he knows she is the only woman for him. Both stories were good but the character of Tessa ruined Aftermath for me. She is an employee on the ranch but acts like it is hers and orders Colton out of HER house. She is living in the McLean house and it is definitely NOT hers. She is too self-centered and selfish to me and I tired of hearing her pity-me talk.

Set in the ranch country of Montana - Denver and Colton McLean—two brothers returning to their family ranch after years away, confronting the secrets left behind. It’s been seven years since a fire claimed their parents’ lives and drove both brothers away. Now their Uncle John's death has brought them back to a place where loyalty and love runs deep—but so do grudges.

Other horses start falling sick with strangles. Someone seems determined to disrupt—or destroy—the McLean family’s legacy by any means necessary. And finding answers will turn this homecoming into a time of reckoning with enemies past and present .

Fire was started accidentally by Tessa's brother although suspicions fell on the drunken father Curtis. The stallion was stolen for breeding by Colton's love interests father and Vince Monroe another farmer.

Backlash by Lisa Jackson is one hell of a romantic suspense novel. There were hints by some of the main characters but there was also that not so sure feeling too. Two families are torn apart by a fire that destroyed everything. Hatred, blame, and anger on the rise the McLean men are unforgiving. One brother convinces that other that his love is guilty of the their family tragedy. Yet, something doesn't set right. Tessa is the daughter of the foreman of the ranch. She loves horses as much as Cassie. Both women love a McLean brother. Despite their past love, these couples are going to need a whole lot of trust, hope, and to band together if they're going to move forward. Themes of betrayal, trust, and love are found on every page. I found myself completely lost within the plot. Action packed and fast-paced, Backlash is a must read. It kept me on my toes guessing all the way to the end. Overall, I recommend it to all readers.

I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.

Two full length books for the price of one. Two brothers left town amid betrayal & dishonesty. Two women were left behind broken & destroyed. Now they all have a second chance. Will they allow old grudges & new turmoil to keep them apart or will they find a way to forgive & move on?

These books are heavier on romance than on the mystery but it really enjoyed them. They are both second chance romance stories. The characters are well developed & three dimensional. The women were destroyed when they were left behind but they grew up to become strong successful women. The men were strong, sexy & arrogant but the women made them fight for the relationships. The supporting characters added depth, dimension & color to the stories. These were very enjoyable stories.

This was really not my kind of book so i struggle to rate this, being a Lisa Jackson novel i was expecting at least some for of mystery or suspense and this was really a romance / almost soft core erotica book. With no real strong plot other than falling in love i found the book dull and slow, and the second book almost repetitive with just character name changed. If just reading at a slow pace about star crossed players falling in love if your jam then you will probably like this. I only rated 3 stars as the writing was well done and the characters were strongly built and written well which is about all i can really judge as i have no idea if this is a solid story line since this is so not my genre.

SO DISAPPOINTED. here I thought "oh my goodness. A NEW BOOK!!!!!. She wrote a new one. YAY!!
NOPE.
instead it a republished book from the '80's'.
UGH.

I loath authors when they republish old works. Especially romance novels. Oh they are old and sappy romance Sh*t. I personally don't like her works of romance. If I want that I'll buy Harliquin books.
It goes with Nora Robert's and Sandra Brown. If there's more romance in the book than anything else. Even suspense and thrills..... ITS A FU*KIN' ROMANCE NOVEL.

I wish before buying this JUNK. They would put something on the cover so I wont waste my money. Especially this SH*T that's got a new cover and title.

TO THE PUBLISHER. PLEASE WRITE ROMANCE NOVEL ON IT.

I haven't even finished Ruthless cause it's the same BS. more crap.

This book has the two books, Tender Trap and Aftermath. This is about Colton and Denver McLean, brothers that have a lot of bad memories since a fire claimed their parents lives, and now that their uncle has passed away they are the owners of the house and have to come home and do something with the house. There is also a girl involved, whom is running the ranch along with her father and its falling apart and about to go back to the bank or non payment of taxes. Lots and lots of tension, not only between the brothers, but between the girl and her alcoholic father. Kept my interest right from the get go. The brothers find out a lot of things they never knew about the property too. Highly recommend.

I gave "Backlash" by Lisa Jackson three stars. I think one of the only reasons I actually finished the book was because of the horses. I didn't realize when I started the book that it was originally two books (guess I should have paid more attention to the note at the top of the back cover) When I finished the section on Denver and Tessa, I wasn't even sure I wanted to finish the book, however the writing was not bad enough for me to put the book down. In reality, the book is a romance with a hint of suspense over what was going on with the horses and dealing with old grudges.

I am not going to elaborate on the actual novel(s) - if you are into romance, give it a go.
