The essential coaching moves that every coach needs to know
Student-centered coaching is a highly-effective, evidence-based coaching model that shifts the focus from "fixing" teachers to collaborating with them to design instruction that targets student outcomes. But what does this look like in practice?
Student-Centered The Moves shows you the day-to-day coaching moves that build powerful coaching relationships. This innovative book is the perfect companion to Diane Sweeney’s Student-Centered A Guide for K-8 Coaches and Principals and Student-Centered Coaching at the Secondary Level. Readers will
Coaching moves that can be used before, during, and after lessons An abundance of field-tested tools and practices that can be put to immediate use Original video clips that depict and unpack key moves Richly detailed anecdotes from practicing coaches that provide multiple access points and strategies Written for coaches who work with teachers in all K-12 content areas, Student-Centered The Moves will help coaches support teacher development, foster a culture of learning, and improve student achievement.
"This book contains many hands-on techniques that can serve coaches well in working with teachers (and students). It addresses a lot of the common pitfalls that occur when learning to be a coach. The book serves as a great tool for experienced coaches as well as those just entering into the position." —Ann M. Lorey, Common Core Coach and Science Department Instructional Supervisor Palo Alto Unified School District, CA
Education is chock full of voices claiming to know how to solve the problems of our profession (and make a buck while they are doing it). How can you tell if the contents are legit or a load of fantasy? Peer Reviewed Research. Sadly, Student-Centered Coaching: The Moves is thin on research. Sweeney follows the familiar pattern of giving an anecdote and then using it to justify a coaching move. Anecdotes may make a concept easy to understand but they don't make the concept true. While there are citations made when I tracked them down they turn out to be other books or magazine articles and not research. Sweeney may very well know what she is talking about but how can anyone risk the time in implementing the strategies unless they have been proven effective?
For me this was a page turner. I loved how it was broken down into chunk to explicitly tell the move, tell why it’s helpful, and how to implement it. I also loved the videos and forms embedded through the book. The scenarios felt familiar and I think that truly helped this book be something different. I really couldn’t put this book down.
I like how this is organized by “the moves” you can use when in the classroom such as noticing and naming or sorting student work. I find this approach much more practical and respectful of teachers than other coaching frameworks.
As a first-time coach, I would give this 4.5 stars! I found a lot of practical advice and important things to think about in order to keep students at the center of the coaching conversations that I have with teachers.
This is a life changing book. How to make impact the most important thing when coaching teachers

I read this book as part of my instructional coaching course. The moves were broken down into easy-to-understand chunks and the moves are practical. I have had an opportunity to try out some of these moves as part of my coaching course. They help me and my coaching partners stay focused on student learning and growth. I think this book is a great read for anyone starting out in coaching as it has practical, applicable information.
Diane and Leanna continue to add to my thinking about the role of instructional coaches and I gained more ideas for to push me in my practice. I was expecting this book to get more into the emotional intelligence side of coaching; however, I'm willing to bet that she has that coming.
This is a tremendous practical guide to anyone who coaches teachers. It is well organized and generally very readable. While it won’t win any literary awards for style, it provides concrete ideas for implementing instructional coaching that improves outcomes for all of our students.
One of the best books I’ve read to help instructional coaches work in a partnership with teachers to make an impact on student learning. Includes step-by-step for implementation and appendices to support the process. I highly recommend for all instructional coaches!!
Reading this allowed me to feel more prepared for the upcoming school year. I really appreciate that there are actionable steps to take that are broken up by various coaching moves. I also appreciate the organizers, talking points, and if/then examples that were provided.
Practical, filled with examples and video clips from coaches and teachers, this well-written book is a great addition to any instructional coach's professional library. This book makes me want to reread the other books I own by Diane Sweeney. Although I've been in my current position as a coach for over four years, this resource validated my beliefs about coaching and helped me reflect on how I can continue to grow.
