Rescued as a child by her grandpa, the powerful Vampire Malachi, Emma has been on the run for nearly forty years from a Vamp determined to see them both dead. When he enlists the aid of assassins from the Vampire Council, their luck runs out. Forced to separate, Malachi sends Emma to a trusted VampLycan for protection.
Redson knows trouble when he sees it, and sure enough, the gorgeous, mostly human female seeking shelter immediately disrupts his future plans. His father swore a blood oath to her grandfather, and Red is honor bound to protect her. He’s surprised when his instincts demand so much more—protect…claim…mate.
Their attraction is explosive, but Emma refuses to consider mating while her grandfather is in danger. She needs Red’s help…but is he Malachi’s savior? Or his biggest threat yet?
I had a rather short area here telling a little about me but then I had more than a few people ask me to expand it so... here goes. LOL. I'm a full time home 'supervisor' which is a nice word for saying I'm a housewife. I'm married happily, I met my dream guy 20 years ago, and we have 4 children. I live in Southern California and I can't function without iced coffee. I believe in romance, I've always been a daydreamer, and I'm a HUGE fan of books, always have been.
No, I didn't know that I always wanted to write. I inhaled books as a child. I read entire series (Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, Trixie Beldon, The Borrowers, etc) in a matter of days at a time. By the time I was nine years old I had an adult library card where I visited often. I moved on to John Saul, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Agatha Christie, and then found romance. I was hooked. I wrote poetry in my teens and then moved on to short stories. My first book was started after I read a real bomb of a book that ticked me off with really horrible characters and a plot that was shabby at best and I thought... I could do better. LOL.
I wrote my first book which will probably never see the light of day in the early 90's. I wrote a series of a few books from it. I'm a series fan! I kept writing for fun, wrote MANY books and then in 2009 I decided to try to get published. I wrote my first Sci Fi romance and Ral's Woman came to be. I submitted it and with a little tweaking, Ellorascave sent me an acceptance letter. It was kind of a 'Cinderella' experience for me. It's been a terrific ride so far and I'm really happy that I finally had the time to commit to writing full time. It's a dream come true.
I’m Emma.” She hesitated. “My grandfather is Malachi. He’s technically known as Master Malachi. He’s a Vampire,” she added, in case that wasn’t enough to clue him in. “Your father owed him a blood oath and I came to collect. I needed his protection.”
For 36 years Master vampire Malachi and his granddaughter Emma have managed to escape the other vampires who wanted to destroy Malachi and his favourite offspring. Unfortunately Emma's VampLycan mother hadn't managed to survive. But Emma who is mostly human like her father -except having a limited number of supernatural abilities- has grown up as a human child.
When the hostile vampires find her and her grandfather, Emma needs to seek help at the wilderness of Alaska where her mother's Clan lives.
Redson Redwolf is the son of the VampLycan who owns a blood oath to Malachi. Thus, Redson, “call me Red” is obliged to help Emma. Initially he is not happy. He likes his loneliness. But later on he will start caring for her and being attracted to her.
“This is going to be difficult.” She stayed where she was. “What is?” “Wanting you and being this close.”
This is a nice adventure and a passionate love story. After a few books about GarLycans, we are back to VampLycan stories. We revisit the clan of Drantos and Kraven and we learn their news. Red is their cousin. We meet new interesting characters like super grandpa Malachi.
Emma and Red's story will certainly keep you entertained for a few hours ;)
The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: ❤️💙💜💚 Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙 World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌎 Character development: 😠☺️😋😍 Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙 Narration Type: Solo Narration
The heroine:Emma - 36 years ago Emma and her mother were attacked by vampires from her grandfather's nest, who killed all the humans in their neighborhood possibly including her VampLycan mother. Emma’s Vampire grandfather Malachi saved her, and they have been on the run ever since.
The Hero:Redson - he is a VampLycan (result of a mating between a Vampire and a Lycan). He lives in Howl, Alaska with one of the three VampLycan clans. His father was friends with Malachi and owed him a blood oath, though his father is now dead and Redson got his debts including the blood oath.
The Story: In the present time, Emma lives with her grandfather who is over 400 years old but looks like he is in his mid to late 20’s. People think they are siblings. When their enemies sent by the vampire council close in, Malachi has Emma pose as his blood slave until she can escape. She has to take off on her own planning to meet her grandfather later. Her grandfather has a VampLycan friend in Alaska that whom he told her to find.
Like the rest of the books in this series, this one has a strong female heroine. Emma was raised by a master vampire, so is used to the supernatural world. I liked the fact that Emma had some VampLycan traits from her mother. She was 40 years old and looked 20, she has healing abilities and is stronger, with better eyesight than most humans. They fall for each other pretty quickly and this gets steamy pretty early in the book.
This book is told in multiple points of view via solo narration and was narrated by Savannah Richards. She has a great voice and has done a fantastic job on this series. I haven’t even minded the fact that it was done in solo narration. She is terrific at doing multiple male and female voices, so it sounds like a full cast audiobook.
Well, after I dnf-ed book #1, I don’t bother with this series anymore eventhought I love Ms. Dohner’s New Species series. But this one was good, light, funny and no tstl heroine or spineless hero in it! Yeah, I talk about you Wen 🤨, my 2nd attempt to read this series!🙄
I think I will check it out this series again! 😘
I wonder, if Grandpa Malachi will get his story too ❤️😁
Very little complications, but very sweet! Both MCs do not fight more than necessary against their being mate! They're also very head-firmly-on-their-shoulders type of person, so it was nice to read about them!
I have thoroughly enjoyed this book, heck I have enjoyed this whole series. Yum alpha type males who only want to find and protect their mates, where do I sign up! I loved Emma spirit she is a spitfire! Having grown up with a vampire for a grandfather ( who looks like her brother, kinda creepy if you ask me ) she hasn’t had a normal upbringing. They have been on the run for a long time so when the Vampire assassins come for them again and they were not prepared Emma had to run to Redson’s clan. ( She acted like it as an everyday thing, I would have peed my pants! )
Redson is duty bound to shelter Emma because of a blood oath his father had with her grandfather. ( No way in getting out of an oath like that, kinda glad I am just a plain ol' human ;) ) Redson isn’t happy about it but he would do whatever the blood oath said. What neither one of them expected was to fall for each other but when you know you know. ( Who wouldn't want to fall for a hunk like Redson.. just saying! )
Emma doesn’t back down at all and she isn’t willing to just let her grandfather ( why would she, he is more like a father to her )go so it is either you help or you get left behind. I loved this about her. What I liked best about Redson was how much he wanted to protect her but he had to learn that just because she is his doesn’t mean he gets to tell her what to do.
This book has all the heartfelt stuff I love and the action I crave. I have wanted to listen to this one since it came out but I have been saving it for my reading challenge. I NEED more books by this author. I cannot get enough of her writing. ( seriously if you haven't read a Larurann book what are you waiting for? ) Or the narration Savannah Richards is perfect and her male voice ( I swear it was duel narration! ) YES YES Please never change.
I loved this book, I know many fans are waiting for a new New Species book and I will say I am one of those fans as well but I love this series. I flew through this book and only put it down because I was so busy otherwise I would have read this in one siting. I loved Redson and Emma. Each on their own were amazing characters. Both were very interesting and had great back stories. Together they were perfection. The addition of Emma's grandfather added so much to this book, and I can't tell you how much I hope her gets his own book. This si a great addition to this series, I never find myself bored or wanting these books to end. Once i start reading I get sucked right in and just enjoy the ride. I can't wait to see which book is next.
Pretty formulaic (even for LD), but I did enjoy it. Red is a big sexy vamplycan and Emma is 3/4 human + 1/4 vamplycan
She has been on the run with her ancient vampire grandfather since she was 4 years old. They are running from Eduardo the douche bag vampire. Eduardo shows up with his nasty friends and Emma is forced to run to Alaska as a last recourse. Red's father owes a huge favour to Emma's grandfather. Of course Red is pretty put out about it at first...
It was pretty funny and cute and sexy at times. I listened to the audio. The plot is simple and predictable but I liked the backstory on Emma and her grandfather and how they tied into the history of vamplycans.
Red, whom we met from book 1 as the cousin of Drantos and Kraven has to repay a blood debt owed by his dead father to keep human female Emma safe.
What's really confusing is that Emma has been on the run with her vampire master grandfather Malachi for over 30 years. They are being chased by his child who is jealous of his love for his VampLycan daughter and granddaughter. And somehow the Vampire Council is involved as well.
I didn't really understand why Malachi didn't avenge his own daughter‘s death but instead has to go into hiding. Red‘s pack Alpha uncle believes VampLycans owe Malachi for helping them get established and helped Emma rescue Malachi.
I have to say I‘m still not clear on the whole Malachi issue but hopefully his introduction is the first step into getting to know more about the Vampire side of things. Let's see.
As for Red and Emma. I guess they were ok but their story did take the backseat.
So it's a solid 3.5 for me. I don't know what her beta team and editors were doing, but clearly, this book needed more work from them. So many grammatical errors and missing words, it felt rushed. I mean it takes reader ONE single read to spot them, yet how many beta readers does she have? And at least one editor ? And NONE OF THEM caught the mistakes ? Yeah, if I'm going to pay $3-$5 for a book, I expect more from it.
The story was ok. It just feels like at first they have one antagonist, he died, and instead of the series ending, the author had to come up with another antagonist, though it's feeling forced and like they are not much of a threat really. At first we sort of knew who the next MC was going to be, because he had a little appearance in the previous book. I honestly can not remember if the MC for this book was ever mentioned. Again, that feels like she's just kind of pulling stuff where there really isn't anything anymore. It feels like the series has ran its course to me. It's still good writing, but I think it's time to let this series go.
Always wait for the perfect mate I am so happy that Redson didn’t have to settle. This character has been with us from the very first book. I had actually thought the author had forgotten about, so I was pleasantly surprised when she brought us his HEA. I enjoyed all of the action in this book and how the vampires continue to create havoc. I don’t know which character will get their HEA next, but I can’t wait to read all about it.
Laurann Dohner’s Redson is a thrilling addition to the VLG series, blending action, danger, and passion into a captivating tale of survival and love. The story follows Emma, a woman who has been running from a relentless enemy for nearly forty years. Protected by her powerful grandfather, Malachi, a formidable vampire, Emma’s life has been one of constant escape and survival. But when assassins from the Vampire Council close in on them, Emma is forced to seek protection from Redson, a fierce VampLycan bound to her by a blood oath.
Redson is the ultimate protector—tough, brooding, and bound by loyalty to his family’s oath to Malachi. However, his attraction to Emma is immediate and undeniable. What starts as a duty to safeguard her becomes something deeper, as Redson finds himself not only wanting to protect Emma but to claim her as his mate. The tension between their shared desire and Emma’s refusal to even consider a future while her grandfather is in danger adds complexity to their relationship, driving the emotional core of the novel.
Dohner’s ability to balance action with deep emotional connections is one of the highlights of Redson. The danger Emma faces is constant, and the plot is full of twists that keep the reader on edge. Yet, the undeniable chemistry between Emma and Redson shines through, creating moments of raw intensity. Their journey from protector and charge to something much deeper feels organic, and the pacing of their evolving relationship is satisfying without overshadowing the action-packed storyline.
Dohner excels at world-building, and the supernatural elements of Redson add a rich layer to the story. The VampLycan universe is vividly depicted, with a clear hierarchy, laws, and dangerous enemies that make the stakes feel real. The sense of danger is heightened by the ever-present threat to Malachi, which looms over Emma and Redson’s budding relationship.
Overall, Redson is a fast-paced, steamy, and heart-pounding read. Fans of paranormal romance will be hooked from the first page, drawn into a world where loyalty, love, and danger intertwine. Laurann Dohner once again delivers a story filled with passion, action, and unforgettable characters. If you’re looking for a book that’s a perfect mix of romance and suspense, Redson is definitely worth the read.
For me this series and it's characters never gets old, and I always seem to find another character of love to have a story about. For instance Malachi, Emma's grandfather, I would love to read more about him and maybe more about the pack too. But this couple, Emma & redson, were adorable while still being hot. You could probably read this book as a standalone but you might enjoy more of the details and surroundings if you've read the others. There is plenty of action, romance, and paranormal type stuff to keep you interested. It's really a very good book, with an adorable HEA, in a series that for me never gets old would recommend.
The story was great. Flat out. full stop. I really enjoyed it. It was light on drama, quick paced, steamy as ever, and left me with a smile(and the desire to build a kick booty den in the woods). All in all I really enjoyed it.
Im pretty sure I took a break from all of the Dohner books because: a.) i ran out of books to read b.) ALL I WANTED WAS THE BIG, SHY, JUST WANTS TO BE LOVED GORILLA BREEDS BOOK, and of course, c.) These cringy, awk as all get out covers.
NOW. I am an advocate for covers without folks on them. It is actually a burning passionate hobby of mine to find new creative ways to COVER up cover models. Its something that could very quickly and very intensely put me off reading a book. Like, literally. All books i own in my home have a mirage of colored stickynotes covering the faces of the plentiful "artistic" romantic model covers. Just, No thanks. If i want to impose Le Favorites (aka Tom Hardy, Jimmy Graham, etc.) as all the heroes, than bet your booty im gonna. But its dang hard to get down into a book when im constantly picturing the photo-shopped Nightmare edition of Fabio steamin it up.
What gets me into a book? Not a sexy (meh) cover, ill tell ya that much.
Laurann Dohner has proved time and again that she writes some dang good romance. This was no different at all.
But seriously. Before we dive headlong into a "space cyborg series" CAN WE GET THE DANG GORILLA BREED(who ive literally waited so long to read about i cant even remember his dang flippin name) THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE PLEASE??
The last book in the series (so far), and we have the story of the VampLycan Redson. He had to honor the promise his father had made to the great vampire Malachi many years ago.
Emma, Malachi's granddaughter, was in danger. She was considered an abomination, and did not fit into any world (human, vampire). Being persecuted for 36 years, Malachi decided to send his granddaughter to the only place where the vamps would not have the courage to attack: a VampLycan clan.
But with the death of Klackan Redwolf, Redson is forced to protect the human. But with a few hours of contact, he learns not only that she had VampLycan blood, but that she smelled as his mate.
And that would be a big mess because he'd promised his Uncle Velder, whose two sons (Drantos and Kraven) had already joined human women, that he would marry a legitimate VampLycan. But there was no way to choose it.
And the worst: Emma was in great danger.
When she receives a message from her grandfather that he had been captured and needed help, the clan decides to go as a way to honor all the help Malachi has given in the past.
The romance between the couple is good, but some excerpts of how wonderful Malachi has always been are too long. And it can not be denied that despite being a powerful vampire of more than 400 years, Malachi is almost a saint!
And hot.
Despite this, the story is cool, and the final battle scene interesting. 4 stars
I love this series so much!!! Where do I start? Well, this is the story of Red and Emma. Red is a vamplycan who lives with his clan in Alaska, Emma is the daughter of a Lycan and a human, she was raised by her grandfather Malachi after her mother was murdered by Malachi's own nest. Living on the run constantly, until they are finally caught. With no time or way to escape together, Malachi makes sure Emma escapes and sends her away to an old friend who owes him a blood oath, so she can claim it for protection. The friend who owed him the oath is dead, but his son Red will honor it by protecting Emma. I love the plot, the way it's written, the pace, the setting, the character development, I hope that wasn't the last time we see Malachi, he totally deserves his own book, totally hot vamp!!!. The characters from previous books that we get to see again, it's like seeing old friends. Totally hooked, can't wait for the next one.
I’m Emma.” She hesitated. “My grandfather is Malachi. He’s technically known as Master Malachi. He’s a Vampire,” she added, in case that wasn’t enough to clue him in. “Your father owed him a blood oath and I came to collect. I needed his protection.”
“This is going to be difficult.” She stayed where she was. “What is?” “Wanting you and being this close.”
There is nothing that Laurann Dohner writes that I hate. She has such a knack for writing great stories that pull you in and never lets go. This book was no different. Redson we briefly met way back in the beginning of this series. However we did not know anything really about his aside from his family background. In this book we not only get to see more of hum but we get to revisit old characters.
Malachi is one of the few vampires in which the VampLycans can agree on. He is not like other vamps. He is honorable and that helps Emma stay safe while he is trying to protect her. The dynamic between Malachi and Emma is cute. They have such a strong bond and connection that I wanted to see more of it. I want to get to know more about Malachi. I have a feeling he is not only going to be important but he might play a bigger rule in this series.
I loved Emma and Redson relationship. There was an attraction between the two but it was not instant love like other books. They grew to trust one another and then they started to realize there was something more then just sex. Which I am happy about. There are so many times when a writer will based an either plot on sex and assumes the reader is going to be okay with that. Laurann does not do that and I am glad about that. Yes there is sex, hot sex, but sex nonetheless but there is also a really good plot happening in the background.
There was death and crazy individuals who want what they cannot have and also this books lets me know there are characters that I am invested in that I want to know more about. I need this series to continue forever so everyone that we meet gets a book. I know that is selfish but this is a series that draws you in and never lets you go.
3. 00 Stars. Audiobook with narration by Savannah Richards. Although this is the 10th book in this series, it is the first one for me. The mythology of this series is interesting; set in 21st Century America where groups of paranormals produced from the inter-breeding of vampires, lycanthropy, gargoyles and a mono-ethnic group of humans characters face conflicts, find mates and live happily-ever-after. In this story, Redson Redwolf, a deeply tan skinned white male is 1/2 vamp/1/2 lycanthropy, allows Emma to move into his den in order to protect her and honor the blood oath of protection that his father swore to Master Malachi, Emma's vampire grand father. Emma, a white 1/2 human via her father and part vamp-lycan via her mother, has been raised by her grandfather after one of her grandfather's turned sons killed her. During the time Emma lived with Red, they had sex, she went into heat, they concluded that were to be mates; but before that could do a blood exchange and mate, they had to fight members of the Vampire Council and other vampires before that could get their HEA. Story is very predictable.
I just can't seem to get enough of this series. My problem is that I can't seem to read it fast enough, but then I'm upset that I've read it as fast as I have.
This story is about Redson, a VampLycan and Drantos and Kraven's cousin. Emma is a half-human, Half-VampLycan who has grown up with her grandfather. Emma's grandfather is a very old vampire named Malachi. Malachi and Redson's father, Klackan, were good friends in the past, and Klackan owes Malachi a blood debt. Emma and Malachi have been on the run from his old nest for over 35 years. However, they've finally caught up to them. Now, Malachi has sent Emma into VampLycan territory and Emma is calling in the debt. Since Klackan is dead, his son agrees to honor the blood oath.
Their story is one of passion, acceptance, surprises, betrayal, danger, excitement, love, and so much more. I really enjoyed getting to go on this journey with them. I also enjoyed getting to see another Hybrid like Bat and Dusti. Though, Emma is a bit different from the.
I like getting a chance to catch up with some of the past characters, and I look forward to reading more. Well done to the author!
Redson Redwolf is obligated to fulfill his family's blood oath to Master Malachi's vamplycan granddaughter, Emma, when she arrives in Howl terrified for her life and requiring protection from the vampires that killed her mother and may have chased her to Alaska. Emma smells completely human but Red's convinced she's his mate.
Meanwhile the vampire that has pursued Malachi and Emma over thirty years has joined forces with the council's assassins to bring them up on charges tor breaking vampire laws. Though the vamplycan's are willing to help the pair, they're convinced there's more that they aren't being told but time is running out for Malachi.
To my taste only two outings prior to this one had enough variance to succeed as above par. There were highlights, such as cameos by the garlycan brothers, Drantos, Kraven and their mates. Also Emma wasn't a moron throughout the majority of the read but even so the pacing was too slow, Emma became quite annoying and this is a series this reader is abandoning. Rating 3stars
