The Vampires of Tor Cliff Asylum

Rate this book
Even vampires lose their minds sometimes. And when they do, there's only one place to send them.

Tor Cliff is an asylum for the most insane and dangerous vampires. Run more like a prison than an asylum, and ruled over by doctors who themselves seem crazier than their patients, Tor Cliff is widely regarded as one of the most hellish places in existence.

Kidnapped and sent to Tor Cliff, Abby Hart soon learns that someone is trying to get to the secret hidden in her mind. Teaming up with the mysterious Madeleine Le Compte, Abby tries to escape, only to discover that something even more dangerous is lurking in the forest beyond the asylum's walls.

What the heck did you do Amy Cross?! This vampire book was way out there outside of your normal realm. I felt like I had landed in the vampire twilight zone!

As much as I love books by this author and I have read a few, I have never given anything less than three stars.....until now. The book started off quick, but then it slowed down to a turtle's pace, and by the time I got past the half way point (which seemed to take forever), the book just went into slow motion till I felt like I was wading through quick sand to get to the end of the book.

Here is a real quick run down of the story - not much to tell, but just to give readers the gist of what is within these pages.

Abby Hart is a vampire and she has vampire royal blood running through her veins. Tor Cliff is an insane asylum for vampires that have lost their marbles and need to recuperate from the sickness in their mind. Tor Cliff is made up of the staff: Dr. Cole and Nurse Silk along with other nurses that help Dr. Cole. Both of them are a little loopy too and probably shouldn't be in charge of running an asylum for vampires. Abby Hart gets kidnapped by goons that work for Dr. Cole and she is brought to the asylum as Dr. Cole wants to perform some experiments on her. After she arrives, things start getting real weird in the asylum and Abby doesn't know why she is there as she knows she is not crazy, so she tries everything to escape. There are other characters that come into the mix during the book including something that is called the "beast" who is located below the dungeons of Tor Cliff.

The book seemed to be interesting in the beginning, but then something happened and the story just shifted a little more than halfway through the book to the point I felt like I was in the insane asylum which is not a good thing believe me! After the halfway point of the book it all spiraled down on a roller coaster of complete "weirdness" and I was just trying to escape myself out of this book. Two stars for this one!

For new readers to Amy Cross: Do not start with this book! This book will probably make you not want to pick up another book by this author. I have read eight books so far by this author and none of them were as strange as this one. I would start with a ghost story by this author instead as that is where she shines and can grab the reader pulling them into her world of haunting stories. This book is definitely not those kind of books, but if you are in the mood for twilight zone/weird stuff that will make you feel like you are going crazy then pick it up and see for yourself.

Insane vampires

This is my first Amy Cross book. The only thing I knew about it going in was an insane asylum for vampires. Well there's a lot more going on. The story was slow and not too much happened. There's a few surprising reveals but I'm not sure it was worth the time it took to get there. Dronigan was a very cool character. I liked the parts about him. However, I won't be reading any more in this series. I will give Amy Cross another try.

I think the author decided to prank us and wrote this book. Totally absurd, incoherent, inane conversations and long, very, very long. I like Amy Cross books, but this can't even be called a book, it's just an encyclopedia on how to dismember bodies. And blood, lots and lots of blood, which I don't mind, but gallons of blood is overkill.

Very Interesting!!

This book was really good! The plot was well written and I enjoyed the love story twist. I love stories that end a totally different way than I expect. I'm a die hard Amy Cross fan!!

This was a pretty good vampire story. It’s the 5 in a series, but I read it as the stand alone novel that was recommended. The story moves smoothly, I didn’t have anywhere I got lost or thought I might have missed something. It has gotten me very interested in the other 7 books that are out there because I really love the main character Abby, she is strong, smart, powerful, very independent, but there is also something sad and vulnerable about her. I’d like to get to know her character better. The story is one of struggles and madness. The world is filled with humans, vampires and werewolves. It centers around this asylum where the doctors and nurses are more deranged, evil, maniacal, and disturbed then the patients are. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the two groups apart. There are a lot of torturous experiments done on the patients and even some of the nursing staff. The story circles around Abigail Hart, an extremely powerful vampire who is believed to have a very big secret deep-seated in her brain, and everyone what to know what it is, use it for all the wrong reasons and then sell it to the highest bidder. These characters are well developed, there is a heartfelt love story in the middle of this book, there is a very strange monster that keeps the forests in the area clear of everything and also controls the dreaming minds of everyone at the asylum. I also enjoyed this book so much I did buy the other books.

Something to know before you read

The overall book theme was above average with one major flaw. This may be a stand alone but it's fifth in a series about Annie Radford who's institutionalized in querky asylum. If I had known in advance, this book and the characters would have been much better. There is little to no character development. It really dulls the book. Check the series page and read in order. It'll make a huge difference. I still read Amy Cross, but this time I missed the introduction, who the characters were, and how they ended up at the asylum.

Fabulous! A piece of my favourite Amy Cross tale...

I didn't even realise that this novel was meant to be read previous to reading the trilogy of Abby Hart. I read all the books concerning Patrick, Sophie, Abby and her travels to Gothos and the other places visited and that story has always been my favourite series Somehow this book was about before all thei, yet I never realised until the end! I want more Abby, can't help it!

I have never really liked Vampire books but this one by Amy Cross is actually funny. From the weir woof who was so funny to the vampire who always cracked me up. Tor Cliff Asylum is a funny place to find humor but it fit right in. You'll really be surprised with the ending. Give it a chance and see if you like Felix and Abby. I think you will enjoy this book.

This is part of a series. You do not need to read the other books to enjoy this. I like the plot and characters. I found it a page-turner. There are many twists and turns. I like how suspense is sometimes built up. This is a good horror book to read in time for Hallowe'en.

Too bloody by half.

Although I am a fan of Amy Cross I didn't enjoy this book. A fantasy horror? Perhaps. To me there was just too much gore and mindless violence. Not much of a story and definitely not one of her better efforts.

Great characters and great plot!

Amy Cross has a rare talent of establishing distinct characters within an ecosystem of the horror genre. The young protagonist, a vampire, is kidnapped into an insane asylum. Although each person and entity seemingly has purpose, the reader will find it a pleasant challenge watching the narrative evolve. Twists await!
