A modern-day ‘Cancer Sherlock Holmes’, Jane discovered that a cancer-starving diet, powerful supplements and a handful of old, forgotten, low-toxicity drugs, when taken together, acted synergistically, magnifying each of their anti-cancer effects many times. Like magic, her terminal cancer just melted away. In this truly ground-breaking book, Jane takes us through her remarkable, heart-breaking journey, and the medical discoveries she made on the way. Using herself as a human guinea pig, she worked out the best drugs and supplements to starve her own cancer in an easy-to-follow ‘Metro Map’. She has expanded this route map to show which fuel pipelines you need to block for every type of cancer, so you too can create your own cancer-starving cocktail. Tragically many simple old drugs have been overlooked in the race for the latest patentable 'game changers’. Is the answer already out there? Jane believes it is. Bit by bit she has pieced the puzzle together, demystified its complexity, and produced a simple protocol. This book will answer all the burning questions you face when you begin to explore complementary cancer care. Which ‘off-label’ drugs and supplements should you take? Should you try the ketogenic diet? Should you fast? Is fat safe? How much and when should you exercise? Jane explains why each patient needs a personalised approach and, importantly, how to work this out. This book, part Erin Brockovich, part Dallas Buyers Club, is a compelling story of resilience and determination in the face of impossible odds. If you or a loved one has cancer, you absolutely must read this book. Even if you have been told that nothing more can be done, Jane will show you this is almost certainly not true. “So powerful and relatable. Often in medical books the science overwhelms and dilutes the narrative arc but because of Jane's compelling and dramatic personal story the book promises to hold the reader. Beyond the personal narrative, the strategy Jane used to get well is at the very forefront in the war against cancer. The use of re-purposed drugs in oncology is gaining traction worldwide. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, is Jane herself. We were both speakers at a recent charity event in London. Jane spoke last, and when she finished, I'm not sure there was a dry eye in the room. She received the only standing ovation at the event. Her story is so powerful; tragic yet triumphant, and relatable to anyone who has had a foot in the realm of the sick. Jane is a fantastic speaker. She has the rare gift of being entirely genuine. Her of a terminal diagnosis in the prime of her life, self-discovery, and path to wellness driven by her own conviction and research has the ability to inspire hope and wake the medical community up to a powerful new tool; the use of combinations of repurposed drugs.” Travis Christofferson, author Tripping Over the Truth “All patients and their relatives need to read this book.” Professor Justin Stebbing, Professor of Cancer Medicine and Oncology at Imperial College "Jane’s clinical reasoning is impressive, her experience is compelling and in the combination of these two elements she has crafted a narrative that, like the anti-cancer metabolic cocktail she champions, is destined to positively enhance countless lives.” Dr Ndaba Mazibuko, Clinical Research Fellow, King's College London Care Oncology Clinic “Jane’s story will inspire anyone reeling from the shock of a cancer diagnosis to take control of their own destiny.” Lois Rogers, freelance health journalist, Sunday Times
I was diagnosed with cancer and went through the Standard of Care protocol of chemo and radiation. Then I was booted out to live or die on my own. That’s how it works. So I started looking around for ways to help tip the scales in my favor against recurrence. I joined a couple of cancer groups on FB and heard about How to Starve Cancer. Joined that FB group and got the book. I’m just starting on the protocol but the most important thing it has given me so far is HOPE. I now know that there are things that I can DO to start to take control of my future. Not just wait passively for the cancer to come back. I highly recommend reading this book if you have been diagnosed with any kind of cancer. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
The author is smarter than most oncologists. She would be dead if she had listened to them. Jane McLelland has done the research that the Cancer Industry has no interest in because most of her recommended drugs are low in cost thus low in profit for the drug companies. Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, she had only months to live. With amazing persistence she searched the medical literature until she came up with the way to survive cancer. In our present system the problem of surviving cancer isn't that there aren't good treatments, it's that the doctors don't use them. She deserves a Nobel Prize.
An incredible book and exceptionally brave of the author to write it. Jane McLelland is a cancer survivor and in this book she shares how she overcame cancer by using a range of treatments including off label drugs. No doubt the book will bring on the wrath of all those wedded to the gene theory and the use of chemo and radiation, but it will also offer hope to those patients who choose not to employ harsh treatments and those for whom nothing conventional can be offered.
When Jane set out to research cancer and its treatments there was nothing like the amount of information now accessible so this book is a testimony to the diligence of her personal determination and research skills. Now that the internet is awash with so much information, her book serves as an excellent signposting tool for others.
Thank you Jane and may you continue to enjoy your good health. You've earned it!
I'm giving this 4 stars because I think the title is a bit misleading -- I started reading the book thinking it was a "How To" regarding diet but it's really more of a memoir + use of "repurposed drugs". Part One is a lot of her personal story which while interesting and gripping, was frustrating to read because I felt like I needed to cull information as I was reading it. Part Two of the Book (The Metabolic Protocol) would be most useful if you want all the nitty gritty of figuring out what you need to do based on what your doctors have put you on, etc. I would definitely recommend the book though to anyone who's had an official cancer diagnosis (or dealing with a loved one's cancer diagnosis).
I loved reading this book, I’ve been on the care oncology protocol for a year now and have learned of many more things I can do to heal from stage 4 cancer thanks to Jane’s book, id recommend this book to anyone feeling with cancer
After being diagnosed with cancer I began read many books about this subject. Jane’s book has given me an understanding of the different methods that cancer cells can use to grow and some of the ways that this growth can be blocked. This book has given me hope that after my conventional treatment is finished I may be able to starve any remaining cancer stem cells and prevent another recurrence. Great book.
This was a hard read because it brings to light the obstacles that cancer patients must face in addition to the fact that they have a frightening, likely/possibly deadly disease. Jane McLelland has done a great job of making some very difficult information somewhat understandable to the average “joe”. The point is not to understand all of the intricacies of starving all cancers, but to understand that you need to find competent practitioners willing to assist you. The theories and studies she cites make complete sense in light of the poor survival rates for cancer patients today. The system is broken and desperately needs an overhaul.
4 and 1/2 stars ⭐️ Amazing read by Jane McLelland, was a Stage 4 cancer patient , who is NED after 20 plus years. She found a way to starve cancer and then killed it. She is helping people on how to do the same. A lot of medical terminology though…
10 STARS! I'm in tears. I just finished chapter 19 of this book. I just love Jane! I love her. Her ❤️, her tenacity in the face of crazy levels of difficulty, and her desire to share!! "Who knows but that you have come for such a time as this!!" This woman went through cancer three times- Cervical cancer, then Stage 4 that spread to her lungs, and lastly Leukemia after heavy chemo. Her mom went through it twice and died. With some medical background, she put in years, hours, months, of her life in researching studies; Sifting through articles and studying the metabolism of cancer. It was fun to read her story and how excited she was as she found more and more options to help her in her fight. In 1924 Otto Warburg was awarded the Nobel prize for discovering all cancer cells have altered metabolism!! Currently, cancer is treated from a genetic approach, ignoring what feeds it- the metabolic side. She finds the compelling research, the ignored letters from past medical pioneers, and study after study that can help combat and weaken cancer and explains how to fight cancer from all metabolic directions in her own story! It's a page turner! As she tells her story of how the medical establishments overlooked issues, she'll also tell you things you're oncologist won't share. Things she learns from her research to help her fit it all in the puzzle... Such as cancer causes your blood to thicken as it causes increased platelets and plasma fibrinogen, so 25% of cancer patients die of a cardiovascular event... Also after surgery, tumor cells are always spilled in the blood, no matter how perfectly surgery goes, and cancer blood markers go up after surgery so cancer often metastasizes. Both of these can be remedied with antiplatelet drugs such as Aspirin and Dipryidamole! Don't let the cancer cells stick, keep it flowing in your blood so your immune system can attack it. From article after article of research she's recognized certain off label drugs in combination as a cocktail can help fight cancer. It's all in her story. Also, after chemo tears apart your immune system, there are many things you can do to improve it utilizing supplements and off label drugs. Her story takes you step by step through what she finds and how she fought. This is a must-have book for cancer prevention, for basic knowledge and understanding of cancer, and to help in the fight. I've read many health books on the importance of maintaining a good gut balance, the benefits of fasting, how metabolic issues are all tied together causing disease, how diet can affect these things and how important your immune system is. This book also touches lightly on these things. All the things I read seem to tie in together, in a whole picture. I love that!! ❤️ Sharing is caring. I got this book from Amazon and it is worth every penny.
This is one heck of a book to wade through. I was diagnosed with cancer and definitely knew there was something I could do regarding my diet to make my body more resilient and better able to overcome cancer, so I was very motivated. But I found it rather frustrating. She mentions all sorts of supplements that even she acknowledges are very hard to get hold of. She got some from Canada or Mexico so before Brexit, which had made it very hard to import. She talks of her battle to be taken seriously by doctors so I'm really not sure what a simple patient such as myself, could do to implement her suggestions, given that most oncologists do not approve or appreciate her theories. It seems that without a health professional on board to prescribe her cocktail there'd be very little I could do. It was also worrying in that she mentions contradicting supplements and warns that incorrect doses could cause more harm than good and unsupervised mixes could be detrimental. I mean good for her in overcoming her disease, I'm thrilled she had the facility and ability to use her knowledge to not only improve her knowledge but use it to overcome her cancer. That in itself is motivational and inspiring and right at the end she mentions a cancer care clinic in London keen to do very similar things to her. But a very large portion of the book and the main message seemed impossible to implement.
Jane’s method makes a lot of sense to me and although the book gets very complex at times, it really is worth persevering as there’s a world of potential here that needs exploring and it makes me so furious that there haven’t been more formal clinical trials along these lines. A must read, if only in terms of another angle, giving hope to patients that have explored ‘mainstream/conventional’ treatments and need/would prefer another route.
Well done Jane on your amazing accomplishment and thank you for taking the time to try and document it for the sake of other patients that could benefit from the knowledge.
Jane is a pioneer. She guinea pig-ed herself and in the process accumulated a heck of a lot of info which to us, cancer suffers, is pure gold. Time is a rare commodity for some of us and reading hundreds of studies and learning a completely new jargon while on chemo or other stuff is unachievable and frustrating.
So yes, this is an awesome read, factual, tried and tested and found to be working and backed by real doctors. Show me another place/person where you can find this.
The author gives an insight into the fearsome tactics of the dragon, how it can marshall bodily resources to its own ends, become aggressive and achieve immortality, but can be outwitted. Like a fairy tale, the monster is tripped up along all its feeding routes, hamstrung and then impaled. A great and fascinating read, this book provides great hope for the stricken. There is much to do to spread her word.
This is a must read for anyone who has cancer or is supporting someone with cancer. This makes so much sense. Jane you are determined, brave, incredibly humble and very clever. Thank you for this inspirational and useful book. I have added this to my arsenal of research and resources fighting this disease.
Thank you Jane for providing the world with such an invaluable resource. You truly are a legend. Thank you for showing us that a sensible approach to treating cancer actually exists! I will be sharing this book and its info with friends and family far and wide!
An amazing story of indomitable will. And also a roadmap for people in extremis. Protocols and explicit recommendations that cover every aspect of treating cancer.
Written in a very interesting storyline format. You follow the author on her journey to solve her own terminal cancer. Wow, I don’t think I could be that strong. I’ll have to remember this for later, because I stopped partway through the second section with all the nuts and bolts of the program, because I don’t have cancer. But it resonates with me, because I’ve been reading more about metabolic health, and her main argument is that the current approach to kill cancer focused on the genome alone, rather than the metabolic side of it, and that we need to do both. So the idea that the current healthcare approach is so specialized and controlled by big pharma and money that it cannot or will not try integrative (or cheap) methods was an easy sell for me. I remember when AIDS was supposedly incurable, but now people can live long lives while managing that virus; why can’t we do the same with cancer?
I have read this book 3 times, every time, I understand more about my cancer. I am excited and hopeful about the possibilities of staying alive for a longer period of time. The research is a little daunting, but once I got started, it came easily. The Facebook group has a lot of support to help me understand what I’m reading.
A’must-read’! Inspirational and daunting to grasp all the complex concepts which could save your life! Read slowly, read over and over…. Take notes and gain months ( if not years more ) during the cancer battle. While on chemo one’s brain is not always up to par, but don’t give up. You are smarter than you fear…
Absolutely everyone needs to read this book. It's backed up by science (as far as possible) and not prescriptive or pandering to anyone.
This book is about a journey to stay alive against all the odds, and even in the face of negligent medical care. There is no miracle cure for cancer, at least not yet and there may never be, but you can attack the weaknesses of the cancer cells using as many drugs, supplements, medical treatments, and lifestyle changes as possible and see incredible results.
Cancer is a fight that can be won, and this book and the doctors that are at the front lines of medicine, implementing treatments similar to what is described here, can make a huge difference to the odds of someone surviving cancer.
Soon research will catch up and explain how all of the drugs work to kill cancer cells, indeed most of the treatments are based on solid research already, but at the moment we must sit up and listen to firsthand accounts like this because they can and will save lives.
This book is REALLLY well done. It is both the story of Jane's journey as well as an exceptionally well-researched treatise on how to try to beat cancer. It is clear that Jane was both highly motivated to survive and incredibly perseverant (even while very sick) in combing relentlessly through the research regarding findings on things that combat cancer that didn't make it into mainstream practice (often, it would appear, because drug companies didn't stand to benefit substantially so there was therefore nobody trying to push adoption). Further, at the end of the book, she does a great job of pulling it all together to try to provide a usable guide for patients who want to work with their doctors to try to include some of these approaches.
I would greatly recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand cancer as well as to anyone who wants to pursue multiple avenues of healing for either themselves or a loved one.
My husband was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in November 2018 so of course I have read everything that I could find that seemed credible. This is one of those credible purchases. We found a lot of information, resources, as well as inspiration within it’s pages. And we have implemented a number of things that Jane recommends in this book including her Metro Map, IV Vitamin C, and repurposed drugs. My one complaint is the lack of an index. I would have given this book another star if it had had one. I have had to scan through the book many times looking for something that I remembered reading. To get around this I finally purchased a Kindle version as well in order to do searches. Because one thing for sure about this book is that you won’t finish reading it and then just put it on the shelf. I am reaching for it often as a reference.
Very curious read. I am not from the medical profession and hence I am not sure how much I can trust this account; I certainly don't understand the various technical terms. Her references do check out though which I verified by a random sampling. So there is certainly something going for the suggestions she gives.
It is not a well-written/organised book but that is not the point. It would have been much nicer to push off all the technicalities to the second part and kept the first part as the more informal one (for a lighter read).
The 2-star rating is just for the writing quality. I already know a person who has used it for her benefit (after being told that she had a few months to live). For me who has seen a terminal patient up close, this means a lot. While I wouldn't try it for a relative immediately, I would hope that there is something meaningful in the material.
Great story of beating cancer multiple times. I am actually on the protocol she describes at the end of the book, so it was fun to see the backstory of where the ideas were born. Honestly, I was most impacted by her complete lack of awareness around stress in her life. It was painful to watch her run herself into the ground as she professed to want to get rid of the cancer. I guess I recognized my pre-cancer self in her!! Also, she was so focused on diet and supplements, no psychological or energetic awareness at all. Just interesting to me to read stories of how people choose to manage themselves when faced with life threatening illness.
Some really interesting ideas in terms of supplements and eye-opening about the complacency of Big Pharma in cancer treatment. Hadn't heard of Berberine supplement before and Jane's experience was really compelling. I am somebody that enjoys reading about science but I found some of the abbreviations tricky to follow in this book. Emotionally this was a tough read as it is too late to be able to make suggestions to a close family member who died of cancer last year. At times very hard to read, partly due to lack of index and apparent poor editing (in particular I was keen to find out about triple negative breast cancer).
An encouraging and informative book on how not to give up on your cancer diagnosis and fight back. Get help from a good naturopath that understands cancer and supplements that give the best results. I recommend katrina Ellis from Qld. Who regularly keeps up to date with new discoveries and targets each persons cancer diagnosis with ongoing care and attention.
Anyone suffering from any form of cancer.
It gives hope that there is something other than conventional methods that seek to eliminate cancer and not just give up.
