ESTE FOI O 1º LIVRO QUE LI NA MINHA VIDA. TINHA 10 ANOS ESTAVA A LER UM LIVRINHO DE "HISTÓRIAS AOS QUADRADINHOS" QUANDO O MEU -QUERIDO E SAUDOSO AVÔ - ME DISSE: Victor quando acabares de ler, vem ter com o avô. Vamos à Biblioteca Municipal (Elvas) requisitar um livro. o tom doce do meu avô fez-me largar o meu livrinho e ir correr atrás dele. Apesar do seu ar austero de militar desde os seus 10 anos. notei-lhe um sorriso prazenteiro. Qual não foi o meu espanto (atenção à data do acontecimento) quando vi que o livro era "enorme" e não tinha um único boneco. "Oh! Céus". disse-me então: "vais lendo e todos os dias, ao fim da tarde vais-me contanto. Reavivas-me a memória A partir dessa data, já perdi a conta a quantos li. Obrigado avô
After having experienced "Moby Dick" in this format, I was inspired to look for more imprints from the Marvel Illustrated series. I enjoyed this one, but I do not think it is as good as the last one I read. I was able to find more of the illustrated classics and will be reading them. I also would like to find "The Man in the Iron Mask" to see how the story continues in this format.
I had never intended to read "The Three Musketeers" again, as I had read the "Illustrated Classics" edition when I was a kid, and had not found it to be my cup of tea. My Mom, however, loves Dumas' "The Three Musketeers" and "The Man in the Iron Mask". As I had a free book credit, I ordered "The Man in the Iron Mask" book for her. I specify book, because that is not what I received. Instead I received this graphic novel of "The Three Musketeers". When I contacted the seller, they made things right by giving me a free book credit again, and "The Man in the Iron Mask" is on its way to me once more. I didn't have to return "The Three Musketeers" either, so I decided that before donating it, I would review it. This story is a classic, and by necessity related to the medium used to convey the story, it is a bit abbreviated from its original form. But the graphic novel hits all the high points, intended to whet the reader's appetite to pursue reading the classic in full. The book does very well what it intends to do. The artwork is engaging, the dialogue and story-telling delivered in a snappy, punchy matter to keep the story racing along at a speedy clip to its conclusion. Even I, as one who does care for this particular book, could not help but be drawn in by the way the story was presented in this medium. While it is at times difficult to tell the Musketeers apart visually - darn, their mustachioed selves! - I appreciate the attempt to stay true to how the characters should appear in light of the era in which they would have lived. Generally, the authors provide enough context clues in way of dialogue and narration boxes so that any confusion as to the identity of the main characters is quickly dispelled. I also appreciate that the author includes a short biography of the author, a list of some of his great works, and a glossary in the back of the graphic novel. The cover tried to come loose from the actual bound pages by the time I was done reading it, but it should be an easy fix, and - as I had picked it up used, and had not even intended to buy the book in the first place - I can't really complain. I highly recommend this graphic novel as a way to introduce the classics to someone who is intimidated by the idea of reading the classics, or of reading books in general. According to the blurb in the back of the graphic novel, the same team who produced this graphic novel also produced one on "The Man in the Iron Mask", giving readers of "The Three Musketeers" to continue on to the sequel. If this graphic novel can be repaired (which I think it can be), I plan to pass it along to our Church, which is collecting books for a local school. I love the idea of this graphic novel being a gateway for some kid or kids into the classics. Although I never would have picked this up on my own, I am glad that I was given the opportunity to experience "The Three Musketeers" again in this way. I had intended to give it a three stars rating because the story has never been one that I've cared for; I'm giving it four stars because of how well it is told here. Bravo.
Part of my study of comic book style adaptations of literature. The telling is a trifle flat, somewhat saved by the great story that comes through from the original. Not to be recommended for its own sake, only for those interested in how to retell stories who want to learn from the mistakes of the past.
Roy Thomas is still able to do a good adaptation of a classic. Many of the stories comprising the adventures of the musketeers was left out. That is as expected from such a lengthy original. I regret that more was not made of the depth of the characters. Thomas seems to shy away from penetrating looks into the characters. The artwork captured the time of the tale fairly well.
Although the illustrations are a bit dark, this graphic novel has enough adventure, deception, intrigue and (forbidden) romance that could peak a teen's interest into reading the original novel by Dumas.
This may have been the best book I have read to date. 4.5 stars (rounded up to 5 on this scale). Maybe something will be better, so I'll leave the ture 5 stars for something mind blowing... and to think... this is a classic... and I loved it! (will that ever happen again?)
This was painful. A masterpiece of serial novels reduced to some sort of renaissance superhero comic book. Of all the many ways this could have been adapted to a graphic novel, this was likely the cheapest and worst.
Buena adaptación, pero debería haber sido un poco más largo. Habían viajes completos que se resumieron en un diálogo de dos cuadros entre otros personajes que los comentaron de pasada.
