From New York Times bestseller Victoria James comes a poignant and heartfelt romance that wraps you in a warm embrace...
Eight years ago, Tyler Donnelly left Wishing River, Montana, after a terrible fight with his father and swore he’d never return. But when his father has a stroke, guilt and duty drive him home, and nothing is as he remembers––from the run-down ranch to Lainey Sullivan, who is all grown up now. And darn if he can’t seem to stay away.
Lainey’s late grandma left her two things: the family diner and a deep-seated mistrust of cowboys. So when Tyler quietly rides back into town looking better than hot apple pie, she knows she’s in trouble. But she owes his dad everything, and she’s determined to show Ty what it means to be part of a small town...and part of a family.
Lainey’s courage pushes Ty to want to make Wishing River into a home again—together. But one of them is harboring a secret that could change everything.
Victoria James is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of contemporary romance.
She is a hopeless romantic who is living her dream, penning happily-ever-after's for her characters in between managing kids and the family business. Writing on a laptop in the middle of the country in a rambling old Victorian house would be ideal, but she's quite content living in suburbia with her husband, their two young children, and very bad cat.
3.5 Lying by Omission Stars * * * 1/2 Spoiler Free Oh, all of us at one point or another have held back information to someone which should have been shared...We had the opening to tell it, should have just said it...but didn't know, we missed an opportunity to make things right. Now not all withheld information is equal.
In The Trouble with Cowboys by Victoria James takes this idea and runs with it.
Tyler Donnelly has been away from his family ranch for eight years. He left abruptly leaving behind his best friends, his father and the ranch he loved. He left in pain; he had lost his beloved mother to cancer after a fight to the end. His father had become distant during this cancer battle and when they put his mother to rest, words were spoken that could never be taken back.
With nowhere to go, he did time on the rodeo circuit and then spent years at a ranch trying to make a life for himself. But during all of this time, the only place he ever thought of as home was the ranch he had grown up on...
Tyler is called back to the family ranch when his father has a stroke. With guilt and duty guiding him, he is stunned when he sees the shape of the ranch. It is a shadow of what it was...rundown and nothing like it once was. With a vow to bring it back to all its glory, Tyler emotionally digs his heels in and steels himself to go into town and deal with the fallout and bad feelings he knows he will find there.
Lainey Sullivan is someone special. Lainey's grandmother raised her and showed her how to run the diner she owned. The mother Lainey had was always chasing love with new boyfriend after new boyfriend causing the grandmother to step up. Through the rules and ethics drilled into her, Lainey has held out for a love that was real. It also didn't help to have Granny's voice in her head warning her about cowboys and their charming "Love 'em and Leave 'em" ways. After all, she was only surrounded by cowboys!
When Lainey experiences the loss of her grandmother and then her own selfish mother, she had an understanding of the feelings Tyler's father carried. The man started to come to the diner for dinner and slowly both of them became dear friends. Lainey was the one who discovered Tyler's father having a stroke. She was able to get the EMT's there in time to save him. Now she makes time to come to the ranch every night with dinner. She sits and talks with him and gives him a moment to feel like old times.
Tyler and Lainey cross paths at the ranch and the diner. There is an undercurrent between them and before long, a kiss is exchanged. Both want to pursue it but have different beliefs. Tyler knew Lainey wanted it all; white picket fence, 2.5 kids and everything else commitment brings. He didn't think he was worthy and neither did any of his past friends.
This is a story about two people who have lived and had to deal with all sorts of pain. One sacrificed herself for others and then became caught up in withholding important information which would complicate everything. Tyler was still carrying the pain inflicted so many years ago and wanted to receive the love he lost. These two were good for each other and just needed to get out of their own way...and let love happen.
If you like small towns, family conflicts, and sweet love stories, this will work.

Lainey's Mother abounded her at a young age to chase after her boyfriends/lovers in the pursuit of "love". Thank goodness for her Grandma Tilly, who stepped in and raised Lainey. Grandma Tilly ran the local dinner at Wishing River, Montana and taught Lainey all the in's and out's of running the dinner. Grandma Tilly also had an aversion to Cowboys and drilled into Lainey that she was to stay away from them and never trust them. Grandma Tilly passed away and Lainey took over the running of the dinner, but she also had a secret dream. Lainey had a talent and love for painting and her dream was to go to a school in Italy to learn from the best. Her dream was put on hold after the death of her Grandma and then her lovely/selfish mother came back ill and dying asking Lainey to care for her. Lainey's savings for her dreams kept slipping away.
Tyler left Wishing River eight years ago as an angry and bitter young man. He lost his mother to cancer and learned a secret that nearly broke him. Tyler and his Father had an explosive fight that night and things were said that were very hurtful and painful. Tyler went on to do rodeo for a while and then found work on a ranch as he missed his family ranch and the life it entailed. But Tylers father suffered a stroke and is back in town to help his father. He left behind two of his best friends that night and never let them know why or where he was going. Tyler knew that there would me no welcome mat for him.
Lainey has had a crush on Tyler since she was in high school. She comes to see beyond his gruff exterior and knows there is a more gentle and caring man. Lainey brings meals from the dinner to Tylers father, they both had developed a friendship during Tylers absence. Lainey is the one that found Tylers father when he had his stroke and the connection was cemented from that point on. Each had been there for each other during their pain and loneliness. Tylers first encounter with Lainey was when he arrived in town and stopped at the dinner for coffee before he headed to his father and the ranch. The two see each other often as Lainey visit his father at the ranch. They begin to develop a friendship and Lainey just wants to help Tyler in his relationship with his father and best friends.
This is a sweet love story packed with emotion and layers character building. I appreciated how Lainey and Tylers friendship and attraction progressed in a steady and emotional way. Both has a few secrets they were keeping and were fearful and what it would happen when it came to light. I had more of an issue with Lainey's as I though she should have been more forth coming sooner. The push and pull in the relationship was well balanced and realistic in my humble opinion. The chemistry was there and appreciated the slow progression.
Very good story line and secondary character. I became invested in those secondary characters and hope to see future stories for each of them. I really liked the visual the writer was able to enact in her writing for the town, feel and people. Always a plus for me. Pacing was well done. I did feel at two-thirds of the book it slowed a tad bit. Also the change in Tyler at that point was a little abrupt. I really found the epilogue to be emotional and sweet.
This was a sweet clean romance that left me a bit torn. On one side I read it in one sitting because I was sucked into the story and the characters. On the other side I was not (not even a smidge) convinced Ty deserved all the judgement he was heaped with and I kept hoping for a huge apology scene that never came.
After 8 long years, Ty has returned to his hometown to care for his estranged father, who just suffered a stroke and is still recuperating. When he left, it was right after losing his mother and having a heartbreaking argument that severely damaged his relationship with his father.
For years, Ty has been trying to forget his past and move on with his life but he’s never really given up the hope that one day he could reconcile with his only remaining family. But his father isn’t so quick to forgive and neither are his former best friends or the only woman who’s ever captured his undivided attention.
They all know (or think they know) the story behind him leaving but they’ve only speculated since his father was never talked about it and Ty wasn’t around to talk about it either. No one bothers to ask Ty what made him up and leave with no word to anyone for eight long years. And this plot device dragged for too long, imo.
Man, do the people of Wishing River know how to hold a grudge! I really disliked Lainie, Dean and Cade at the beginning of the story. The way they jump down his throat, the way they immediately judge him without getting any of the facts.
I guessed pretty early on what was said to Ty that drove him away. And honestly, I get it. I might not agree with his decision to leave but I can understand how devastating the revelation must have been to him. On the heels of losing his mother and already having a strained relationship with his dad. I can sympathize. I get why he did it and it was frustrating that not one "good" person in the story ever guessed it or was able to think of Ty and sympathize with him.
Apparently not Ty’s friends (who should have known him better and how could they not know the already tenacious relationship between Ty and his dad???) and not Lainie (who didn’t care to get the second half of the story before she started judging) and definitely not Ty’s father – if his stubborn and just plain mean attitude is any indicator. Especially since this guy was fully aware of his own hurtful words and actions. He wasn’t blameless and I hated that no one ever calls him out on his crappy behavior.
Aside from the rampant and unjustified AssUming that goes on in a majority of the book, this still has a sweet romance between a guy trying to move past his own emotional hardships and a good hearted woman finding love for the first time. There’s some interesting secondary characters and a cozy small town vibe going for it.
For those that like clean (no smexy scenes) romance reads, this one is worth a read. The chemistry is still hot and there’s still plenty of steamy moments :) If you're anything like me and can hold a grudge like a champ, this might grind some gears.
* * * ARC provided for an honest review * * * I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book better not be a complete stand-alone because I want it to be a part of a series. Tyler's friends need their happy endings! I even have a theme for the series and it fits another couple aka Dean and Lainie's friend. The theme will be "I judge my man without giving him the benefit of the doubt". Lainie was harsh to Ty without even knowing the reason why he left. After we found out, I thought that his actions were justified. Everyone is blaming him and he was only partly the one to blame. If we assume that the book is set in 2019 or even a year or two ago, we can say that Ty let his hometown around 2010. People had mobile phones then, so someone could have reached to him, instead of just sending a letter.
Ty spends most of the book thinking that he is undeserving of love and a family and it was sad. He is a good person and I was on his side. I loved the way he grooved and I was very happy with the solution the author gave to how Lainie and Tyler would spend their lives in the near future. I was going to be very unhappy if Lainie didn't get what she deserved. Lainie has been putting her life on hold for the last years and she is not living the life she was supposed to. Her current occupation is not what she has dreamt of doing, but life was forcing her to push her dreams aside and do what she had to. I wanted her to go to Italy since the first time she mentioned it and I was wondering how the author was going to do that because I didn't want to see the heroine compromise her future once again.
Overall the book was enjoyable and easy to read. It had a good pace and flow. The only thing that frustrated me was how Lainie, Dean and Cade where treating Tyler. There is so much bitterness and hate and it was sad since these men were his best friends and Lainie was his love interest. With everything said, I would recommend the book.
Whether I'm looking for a book to read with a sweet romance or one with a little more heat I know I can always count on Victoria James to deliver. This is one of her sweet reads and it definitely hit the spot. It's a wonderful slow build romance that pulled at all my heartstrings.
Tyler Donnelly left Wind River after a huge fight with his father, never expecting to return. Now eight years later with his father's health failing and the ranch in disrepair Tyler has finally returned home. Things have certainly changed while he's been gone and he'll have his hands full getting the ranch back to it's former glory. Too bad the townspeople aren't happy to see him. Luckily Lainey Sullivan doesn't seem to hate him and she's willing to help him find his way.
This isn't a book you want to miss, I highly recommend it.
This was a really enjoyable small town romance. I loved the heroine and the hero grew on me. This is a slow build sort of romance and it's more on the sweet side than the hot side. All in all, I really enjoyed this one. There were a lot of different components at play - a family secret, the loss of hopes & dreams, betrayal and more. And I loved how all of it was brought together. It's a fantastic read. I loved all of the side characters and hope that this is a series so we can learn more about them!

After having read, reviewed, and loved last year’s The Firefighter’s Pretend Fiancee by Victoria James, I was very excited to have the opportunity to read her novel The Trouble with Cowboys. The first few chapters had me fully engaged and then several things happened.
The first word that popped into my mind as I was reading was “mechanical.” There were passages that felt like the author was going through the motions. This became even more apparent after the number of repetitions of phrases and thoughts. By now, we all know how picky I am about writing and, as such, I probably don’t need to expound on how I feel about this.
There's a reason Victoria James is one of my favorite authors. She writes heartfelt stories that tug at your heartstrings, with characters you wish were real. The Trouble with Cowboys is a small-town romance, set in the town of Wishing River, Montana. In the town of a thousand people, everyone seems to know everyone and their business.
Eight years ago, after the death of his mother and a huge argument with his father, Tyler “Ty” Donnelly packed his things and left in the middle of the night. He didn't say goodbye to his friends or anyone. His pain was so palpable he just knew he had to get away. He had no clue where he was going or what he would do to survive. A phone call from his former best friend now doctor, Dean Stanton, informing him of his father’s stroke brings him back to town.
Lainey Sullivan hasn't had an easy life. She was abandoned by her mother and raised by her grandmother. It was just the two of them, until her grandmother passed away. Grandma Tilly left Lainey two things, Tilly’s Diner and a piece of advice, “never trust a cowboy”. For the past five years, Lainey has been faithfully running the diner. But she finds herself stuck and feels as if she's wasting away. At twenty-six, Lainey has always dreamed of being an artist. She even got accepted to a prestigious art school in Italy. But something would always happen to force her to change her plans. Now Lainey is stuck running the diner out of loyalty, duty, and obligation.
When Ty shows up at the diner, all heads turn to stare at him. No one asks how he’s been or welcomes him back. Even Lainey is cold and rude to him. But she sees something in his eyes. Something she recognizes in herself. Over the years, Lainey and Ty's father, Martin, have grown quite close. She views him as the father she never had. Since his stroke, every night Lainey drives an hour to take Martin his dinner, feed him, and spend time talking with him. Lainey refuses to stop her routine just because Ty seems to be uncomfortable with it. In quick order, Lainey and Ty form a friendship which leads to a growing attraction. However, each is hiding a secret that could jeopardize any future together.
The Trouble with Cowboys was a really nice read. I love the main characters of Ty and Lainey. They were truly what the other needed. The secondary characters of Hope, Lainey’s best friend, and Dean and Cade, Ty’s best friends were equally as good. They all have their stories and untold secrets. Hopefully, this is a start of a new series.

Over the years, I have enjoyed Victoria James’ storytelling skills from the beginning, and in my opinion, THE TROUBLE WITH COWBOYS is her absolute best work (so far). Lainey and Tyler’s journey broke my heart on so many levels. What they have each experienced would break most people, but they keep going, keep doing, keep living even when that is probably the hardest thing they’ve had to do, ever. Eventually, they will heal themselves, each other and relationships that have been damaged along the way. It’s not going to be an easy task. There are hard choices to make, forgiveness asked for, understanding their side necessary, and seeing the entire picture with all of the facts is essential for them to be whole again, and to find their happiness together as well.
This is a story of the human condition as well as a romance. People make mistakes, bad decisions made under emotional stress are hardly ever the right ones. In the end, we only can do whatever it takes to get through and hopefully onward to a resolution.
THE TROUBLE WITH COWBOYS is rich with secondary characters who help drive the emotions, the situations, and even the resolutions eventually. I sincerely hope there will be more stories to come for now I so want to know what happens to these people that I’ve become emotionally invested in over the course of their combined stories.
I would highly recommend THE TROUBLE WITH COWBOYS to any reader who enjoys going deeper into characters, that can appreciate the levels that people go through as they flounder in life trying to make something wrong right again. It’s a slow burn romance with a couple you’ll be emotionally engaged with, a complete community to fall in love with as well. While I did receive an ARC of this story, I will purchase it upon release as well for this is a story I will read again, probably finding even more depth and more to enjoy once again.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
I loved this story! This book was my introduction to Ms. James’ writing and I loved it. Tyler is sexy, troubled and lost and Lainey is sweet, tough and lonely. These two were the perfect couple because Tyler was able to get Lainey to open up an show her that she’s beautiful and important. While Lainey was able to get Tyler to open his eyes and see what he has in front of him. The story was heartbreaking, hopeful, sexy and funny at times. Can’t wait to read the next book!!
This book was just okay for me. This was a new to me author and the book came off like a Hallmark movie {of which I don't watch), It was not my usual cup of tea since it lacked any heat and was borderline PG/PG-13. So that was disappointing. The book started out great though.
Tyler left home 8 years ago after an argument with his dad following the death of his mom. Words were said that couldn't be taken back and he ran. He's now back in town after his dad suffered a stroke and he's there to take over running the family's ranch again and getting things back in working order.
Tyler was a sexy cowboy with a chip on his shoulder and someone who the whole town hated apparently. Speaking of that, I found everyone in the town (but Lainey after her initial reaction and Father what's-his-name of course) to be incredibly judgmental. They found Tyler at fault without any explanation and I didn't think that was very 'friendly town' like. Even his best friends turned their back on him as soon as he left. No calling to check on him, no welcoming him back or asking how he was, nothing. They judged him until the end of the book. Even Tyler's dad held a grudge for way too long for my liking.
I also liked Lainey. She ran her grandmother's diner. She was raised by her grandmother after her dad wanted nothing to do with her and her mom chased men her whole life and didn't have time for a kid. Lainey was smart, sassy, really caring and loyal. She also had a big crush on Tyler as a teen and can't ignore that he's really hot now that he's older, even if he is a lot more hardened than he was 8 years ago.
Most of the book is a back and forth with Lainey pushing Tyler away, him staying away, then coming back. It really dragged on and on and I grew bored of this after a while, but pushed through hoping they'd get it together. The whole blow up in the end was resolved way too easily in my opinion. I mean he just walks back in, makes a grand gesture and all of a sudden they're going to get married? They didn't spend THAT much time getting to know one another. Yes, they had some deeper discussions, but it seemed a bit unrealistic to me, but I'm probably in the minority there. I still kept holding out for some heat by the end of the book, but got none, just sweetness. I would have liked the epilogue to take place a year later, not so quickly since their relationship still seemed a bit fragile and I was left with wanting to know how things were on the ranch, how art school went, how the diner was running, etc. But oh well.
I did find the writing style a bit repetitive at time. I'd read a phrase then think, 'I swear I just read that,' looked back 2 paragraphs and the same thing was just said. I found that happening quite often. I did read an ARC though, so maybe it'll be corrected before the final is released.
Another winner! Ty is a sexy cowboy with daddy issues who left home abruptly eight years ago. He returns only after learning of his father's stroke, however, because of how he left, he is not welcomed back by anyone except for Lainey, the proprietress of the local diner. She is kind to Ty and they become friends without benefits. With the backstory of all the people angry with Ty and protective of Lainey, this is an engaging tale that kept me hooked - I literally read it in one sitting.
This is a must read for fans of the genre. The author is on my must read authors' list.
Tyler and his father had a big blow out and hasn't been home for eight years. Now he's back home to support his father after finding out he had a stroke and help run the ranch that seems to be going down. Laniey wanted bigger things in her life but managed to stay stuck in the town she grew up in taking on the running of her late grandmothers diner. Shes one of the many people not happy about Tyler's return after abandoning his father but what they never expected was that attraction between the two.
I really enjoyed this western contemporary romance. It was interesting seeing how everyone would receive Tyler back in his hometown after leaving his father for so long. No one knew the truth of that matter between the two and its obvious the towns people took sides and deeply cared about the father considering how everyone was taking their part in the care of the man. It was also interesting seeing how in turn he helped everyone else in his own way. Tyler had is bagged and I liked getting to see how his view was with everything that was happening in the book. I also liked Lanieys character, she was a very loyal and caring women despite her upbringing. She cared and loved her mother even with how her mother treated her and made her feel second best. Laniey would do everything she can for those that she loves and even put her dreams on hold to care for her mother then to make sure her grandmothers business stays open after she passed. Then there was the connection that was brewing between and seeing the drama and romance unfold. Overall this book was pretty good I really enjoyed it.
"Their final day together, his father's last words to him had changed his entire life, and he'd been running from them for eight years."
That's why Tyler Donnelly left Wishing River, Montana, and never looked back. But when he learned about his father's stroke, he felt it was his duty to come back and take care of the ranch while his father recover. But things changed since he was last there and trying to patch things up with his dad will not be an easy task either. Fortunately, he can count on Lainey Sullivan. She's the one who found his father unconscious and visit him every evenings after her shift at the diner. Being a diner owner was not her dream, but just like Ty, she felt that it was her duty when her grandma died. Lainey used to have a crush on Ty. She still find him attractive but even if she's friendly and nice, she can be closed off too. He's not the most extrovert either but they'll manage to find a way to communicate their feelings.
If I had to resume this book in a few words, I'd sat there's tension, and not just the sexual kind. But it's to be expected when you hurt someone and they hurt you back. My heart broke for Tyler, his father and for Lainey when the hero couldn't deal with overwhelming emotions without acting like a jerk. But I like that she didn't believe in his bullshit and didn't hesitate to speak her mind. It sounds as if I didn't like my reading but that's not it. It was just heavier stuff than what I'm used to from the contemporary romance I usually read but from time to time I can enjoy overwhelming story.
We meet prodigal son Tyler who left his home 8 years ago after having a big fight with his father after losing his mother. Both of them blamed each other and after something his father revealed it was just too much for him so he fled and never contacted anyone. His father Martin has a stroke and so Tyler comes back to take care of him and saving their ranch, but he never expected to get the reception he was getting from everyone. Lainey is all alone in this world, she has lost all of her family so the friends that she has she is very loyal to and this town loves her because she is beautiful inside and out. When she sees Tyler she is instantly attracted to him and he is to her but she is angry with him because of his treatment on his father and she is keeping a secret from him. While Tyler keeps pushing Lainey away he can't help but fall in love with her (yeah I didn't get this since they barely spent time together, but it is what it is) Tyler ends up hurting her feelings and pushing her away only to regret it..Am hoping that we get a story on Hope and Dean soon and eventually Cade.
Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) Voluntarily reviewed with my own thoughts and opinions
Once upon a time, a boy and his father parted ways. It seemed one sided, as in he left town with no notice leaving his father in the lurch because he was simply being a horse's behind...but as our leading lady Lainey finds out many years later, there are two sides to every story and not everything is as it first seems.
I already loved Lainey's character for her spunk and drive, but I had to give kudos for sticking to her values...though the timing was DEFINITELY a bit awkward. Hey, better late-ish than never, right? Also, I loved Ty's respect for her choice, even if he doesn't quite know what to do with himself, and how he was able to admit it may be too much for him. Of course, I also loved how he found himself falling into something he never saw coming, which leads to some heart-wrenching yet wonderfully selfless moments. There was always the little secret between them though that was going to rear its ugly head at some point...but, you know, what's a story without a little intrigue, right?
So, to summarize... it was SO GOOD! To give you a little bit more...I was SO happy with the ending, truly and one hundred percent. Concessions were made, truths were uncovered, dreams were rediscovered, forgiveness was found, and love made itself known. Be still me heart... 💕 If you're a fan of Contemporary Romance and don't mind your next potential book boyfriend wearing a cowboy hat from time to time (I'll totally overlook it...or hide the hat *giggle*), this one is for you!

After the death of his mother and harsh words between he and his father, Tyler left his home in Wishing River, Montana, never expecting to come back. That changes when word reaches Ty that his father has had a stroke. Back in Wishing River, Ty’s the latest subject of the gossipers but he expected such. What he didn’t expect was Lainey, owner of the local diner, and friendly visitor of his father.
Lainey is barely making ends meet with the diner, has artistic aspirations, and a healthy dose of mistrust for all cowboys. When Ty Donnelly rolls back into town she has several reasons to want to avoid him, but her body and mind have other ideas. Both characters harbor secrets and pain but are exactly what each other need. Victoria James’ The Trouble with Cowboys had me reading most of the story through blurred vision. I felt Lainey's pain and couldn’t help but cry for her. I felt Tyler’s pain and his quiet suffering.
You all should know by now that Victoria James is one of my absolute favorite authors. Her writing is realistic and her subject matter for each book is believable. Her heroines and her heroes are not perfect, but they are perfect for one another. There is a reason that Victoria James is one of my all-time favorite authors - she writes impassioned and realistic contemporary romances. To date, I've read most of her books and each one manages to evoke emotional responses from me. At the very least, I always tear up during some part of the novel. Her characters are believable and realistically written.
Victoria's writing is phenomenal. Her characters, the plot, themes, drama, and passion pull the reader in and keeps them engaged. There is true emotion that can be felt by those readers that become one with the books they read. I get lost in the novels and put myself right into the middle of them. I feel for the characters and drawing on my emotions is what makes a book worth 5 stars for me. If I hurt with them, cry with/for them, laugh, or get angry, then the author did a fantastic job and has written the perfect book (or in the case of Victoria...books) for me. Victoria James is amazing!
This beauty starts off at breakneck speed with Tyler returning home after an 8 year absence. Walking into Tilly's diner he's met with stares, glares and silence. Even from his best friend. Tilly's granddaughter is behind the counter and avoids serving him, she gives him a to go cup of coffee. Nothing like a subtle hint! Loved Lainey! Tyler left town without a word to anyone. He and Lainey have history. He's come back because his father has had a stroke, his best friend is his Dr and his other best friend now runs the ranch that was supposed to be Tylers. He's been gone for 8 years and much has changed. He also doesn't know that Lainey brings his father supper every night and the two developed a friendship after Tyler left. The story paces through Tyler walking on egg shells around the house, fighting with his friends and Lainey and him trying to reestablish a connection with her as well as get the ranch back in running order. His attitude comes off a little like, "I'm home now and in charge.." Maybe, but where were you for the last 8 years. Something he's not anxious to disclose, or the reason he left in the first place. Tyler wore me out, he truly did. There were a couple of scenes I wanted to slap him silly for things he said to Lainey. One of those kindle flinging moments, every book has at least one of those! There were also times I felt like Lainey was mothering Tyler, which left me scratching my head. I didn't love this book, but I liked it. I love Victoria's stories, this one was just a little punchy for me. But still a great read! You'll enjoy throat punching Tyler.
arc from Net Galley and Entangled for an honest review
I really enjoyed this book, I found it completely hard to put down. The Author has a way of sucking you in from the beginning and it makes you feel like you are right there, or watching it on a scene. I love how the characters truly feel like you are catching up with friends and I love the small town feel of the book. With everything that Lainey has faced she has this strong fighting spirit and you really cheer her on through the whole book. The chemistry and the raw emotions just jumped off the pages. Tyler hints at something through out the book and its not till later you find out what which kept me guessing and wanting to know what was going to happen next with him and his Dad. Over all the book is a great read and does have some language but over all I would say totally worth the read. I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley. I was under no obligation to post a review and have given my honest opinion
This book got to me in the very first chapter. I had such a heavy heart and eyes full of tears as I read it. Have a tissue nearby, especially if you have lost your mom. But Tyler and Lainey's story is so beautiful and heart touching. My heart hurt for both characters and wanted nothing more than them to find their happy ever after. They had a lot of their own hurts to go through and get over. I believe they helped each other, more Lainey helping Tyler more. However, Tyler helped her see what was in front of her all along. So if you are looking for a fantastic, emotional, heart pulling read, then this is the book for you. I loved the ups and downs, the will they/won't they, please make up with your father, and please don't give up your dreams or each other. And now I am really hoping Dean, Cade and Hope get their story too.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the publisher through Netgalley.
This is a story with a lot of heart. It is insightful and digs deep into the values that make relationships and families. Tyler is a lost soul returning home to a father and community he believes is unwelcoming. He has deep soul wounds that needs to be healed. Lainey, despite her hardships, has a heart that is open and giving. They each have demons and secrets they believe are enough to keep them apart from each other. The author digs into the small town community relationship and how they rally around each other in time of need. She takes a dive into the heart and soul of the people as she builds the characters and explores their interactions with each other. It is a well developed small town romance with a fighting spirit and a happy ending.
I'm sorry to report that this book was just not for me. It was far too objectifying of the female lead from the very beginning. The people in this story held the most intense grudges for the most pointless reasons, and the secret surrounding the main plot line was dragged out for far too long in my opinion. To say this was not my cup of tea would be putting it lightly. I have enjoyed books from Entangled in the past, and I'm extremely thankful that they provided me this digital review copy, but unfortunately with this title, it didn't work out. There is not much more to say except that I hope other enjoy this one more than I did.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
OMGosh!!! I just loved this book. Ms. James is a great author. I have adored all of her books. This one is no different. You can just FEEL the emotions that these characters feel throughout the story. There are highs and lows and you ride that roller-coaster with them. The pain that the characters felt will just grip you in such a way that you will not be able to put this book down. I was enraptured right from the beginning. I was so very sorry to see this one end. There are some pretty great secondary characters here so I hope that there is more to this little town to come.
This book was written in a dual POV format. I love that. Getting into the characters' mind and see their view point is so helpful in understanding what they are going through. Lainey and Tyler have each suffered in the past and to see their inner thoughts and reasons is wonderful.
I highly recommend this wonderful story to anyone.
This is Lainey and Tyler’s story. Tyler left town eight years ago and now he is back to run the family ranch after his dads stroke. He left after an argument, they both said hurtful things. Now he is back and everyone is treating him like an outsider. Nobody knows why he left and he doesn’t feel like saying. He eventually forms a bond with Lainey that leads to thoughts of lust and white picket fences. Lainey runs the diner and is a artist wanting to expand her art training. She has life mapped out but her plans never work.
What an emotional rollercoaster throughout this book. You kind of sympathize with Tyler when he feels like an outsider but then he goes and hurts Lainey, and you lose the sympathy and get angry with him!
How can you not like Lainey? She gets the one thing that she dreams of and then has to keep putting it off to help out family members - not sure that I would have been so kind as she was when her mom got sick.
Lots of relationships needed mending and hope to see more from this group - will Hope and Dean see past their differences? Will Cade and Aiden find their own women to love? Loved the HEA, especially that Tyler apologized publically!
This new to me author is amazing. The Trouble with Cowboys is a very well written story. The characters were great and well developed. I'm hoping this will be a series.
Tyler returns home after being gone for 8 years. The reasons he left were heartbreaking. He now returns when his father has a stroke. Their relationship is very strained and Tyler isn't sure he made the right choice coming back. Except that Lainey seems to be a big draw and helps him through a lot. His best friends are interesting characters, as is her best friend.
There were some pretty intense moments in the book. Heartfelt conversations, including several with his friends.
I would highly recommend this book. I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley and this is my honest opinion of the book.
For the most part, I enjoyed this romance. I did like the chemistry between the couple. The reason it wasn't a favorite was the way his friends and father treated him for leaving. The resentment dragged out way too long. Still it's worth trying out.
I have read a couple of her novels so I had to read this one since it drew me in. Tyler had to go back home in a way that after saying he would not was a bit different than expected. Then there is Lainey whom catches his attention. Living in a small town is not easy with everyone having you on their radar with this story being in that category. These two catch your interest and you too are like the small town and watch them closely. It will pull on your emotions showing you many sides to these two with also though some things that will come out. She does know how to feed her readers and keep them coming back for more as I did.
Victoria James did an incredible job with telling this story. It was such an emotional read for me. This book takes places in a small town where everyone is in everyone's business. It is also a town where they all look out for each other. The Trouble with Cowboys is Tyler and Lainey's story. Tyler left town eight years ago after the death of his mom. His dad and him had a really big fight which was the last straw for Tyler. Many things were said during this augment. Many of those things were things you wish you could take back. Now Tyler is back because his dad had a stroke and he needs help. Lainey has lived in this town her whole life and all she wanted to do as an adult was to go to Italy for school for her art. Every time it was time to leave something always happened to stop her. Tyler and Lainey both feel so alone and so lost in life. From the time they see each other again you can see that they have a connection to each other. Both try to fight it while they navigate though life. There are somethings that you cannot fight because the connection is so strong. This book will pull at your heartstrings. It will make you laugh and in the next moment it will have you crying. I cannot wait to see what happens next in this small town. I am really looking forward to Dean's book. I really hope his book has something to do about Hope. Thanks Net Galley.
