A comedic tale of a young woman’s relationship with a magical transforming dragon maid—now with an anime adaptation!
Miss Kobayashi is your average office worker who lives a boring life alone in her small apartment—until she saves the life of a female dragon in distress. The dragon, named Tohru, has the ability to magically transform into an adorable human girl (albeit with horns and a long tail!), who will do anything to pay off her debt of gratitude, whether Miss Kobayashi likes it or not. With a very persistent and amorous dragon as a roommate, nothing comes easy, and Miss Kobayashi's normal life is about to go off the deep end!
This volume mainly focuses on Kanna and her father’s tense and complex dynamic that came up due to an upcoming war. I really enjoyed learning so much more about Kanna and all of the world building in terms of where all of the dragons originally came from. There was also a meddling mage who I have mixed emotions about because while I didn’t like his characters, I also found myself very curious by him and wanting to see if he can evolve in the future.
Very much a story focused volume centered around Kanna and the dragons in general. Nicely ends and concludes right at the end so the next volume will be more light hearted comedy. I like the more dramatic parts but it sorta gets slogged down due to more dialogue and less set ups for punchlines. I’ll say this series author does a good job with more serious stuff but I think they are more suited for comedy/slice of life stuff.
This was a lot of dragons fighting and Kobayashi actually low key saving the day so I'm going to give him that one. It was less terrible than it could have been considering who writes this series.
Kanna is going to grow up to be a dragon version of Kobayashi, I'm calling it. Huge lesbian energy who can get things done in ways that no one sees coming. Like mother like daughter.
What upset me was the implication that Kobayashi was ever going to let Kanna stay with her father, after everything that he did and didn't do? That part just seemed so off to me, and uncharacteristically bad with how we got to where we were in that situation.
As this was the last manga that's currently out though, I have to say that's a satisfying end to the main series. I understand that there are a few side manga that I should read, and I may, but later!
This was a lot of fighting and a few family feels, which is in general very on brand for the series. I'm sure that, wherever the series goes after this will be mostly fluff and I'll be good with the dragon fluff as long as he isn't a coward and let's Kobayashi admit that she's a married lesbian with 2 daughters...but you know...next time...
A bit different entry to the series (even the mangaka admits it but felt the series was flexible enough for Kanna's story). In the previous volume, Kobayashi gets her Sorcerer's license (she was tricked by her boss to accompany Shouta but really signed her name up too; #1 overall btw, aced written and practical) and some semblance of plot starts. And it all comes to a head in vol. 8. A little light on the jokes, the fan service but ramps up the seriousness, story telling and wholesomeness of found family feels.
Dragon War arc. The manga has turned from a slice of life comedy into a fantasy shonen. Kanna's father has come to bring her back to aid in the war. All the while the flames of war are fanned by a mage playing both sides of dragon factions in the name of revenge.
Good thing Kobayashi is now a licensed sorcerer huh?
Wow! This volume left me at a loss. I genuinely only picked up this series because the cover art on this volume peaked my interest. And I was not disappointed in the slightest by this entry. Fantastic combat, every single character got to do something plot relevant, and Kobayashi finally got magic. Everything I've wanted from this series happens in this volume and honestly if it were to end here I would be completely fine with that.
I still don't consider myself a fan of this series but I am a huge fan of this volume. Never thought I'd give any book from the Dragon Maid franchise a five-star but this is a most pleasant surprise.
I also suspect that the upcoming movie will be similar to this volume as the poster that has been released heavily focuses on Kanna.
Kobayashi has hidden magical powers! Can she & the gang get prepared in time to stop all out war between the 2 dragon factions? Let's hope so, because if they fail, it means death! For them, & perhaps Earth, as well! This volume is serious business. Not the usual light-hearted fare we've come to expect from this series. I rather enjoyed it. Art, good. Dialogue, a little over-the-top yet still good. Characters, likeable & interesting.
This is the first volume of the manga that's not covered in the first two seasons of the anime, and it's also the first time the manga has a plot arc anything like this long: essentially the whole volume is the story of Kobayashi-san's involvement in Kanna's reconnecting with her father and trying to prevent a pointless battle between dragons. It was sometimes a bit hard to follow, but overall quite interesting, and I do see why this arc probably makes more sense as a movie than as part of a season of anime, at least of anime like the first two seasons of the show.
This volume is where the new content is in full swing and the material for a third season is introduced. Here we see Kanna deal with family drama resulting in Kobayashi, Tohru, and everyone else stepping up to help her. It results in some incredibly action-packed moments that are surprisingly intense. One can only hope a third anime season will be announced in 2023.
It was so different from the other volumes!! I think if you’re someone who prefers mangas that follow a specific storyline all the way thru then this volume is perfect for that, but I prefer slice of life mangas so it wasn’t all that fun for me
I like how this series moves from humorous stories to more series stories, as well as mixing them up. This volume was more serious but still fun. I am enjoying the series.
