Shade Renard is a young witch doing her best to look after a small town by helping with newborns, tending to pets, and brewing healing potions. But while her magic is useful, Shade longs for more excitement and dreams of becoming a private investigator. Her chance comes when a vampire prince’s secret book is stolen, and she takes on her very first case. What seems like a simple theft quickly spirals into something far more dangerous. As Shade digs deeper, she’s pulled into a world of powerful beings (vampires, sorceresses, wizards, and fae), and even a haunted house investigation with a human FBI agent. The stakes are high, and if Shade isn’t careful, she might become the next person to go missing.
This story is a fresh and entertaining take on the urban fantasy genre. While it features the usual lineup of supernatural creatures, it manages to add its own charm and originality. The dynamic between Shade and her pixie familiar, Peasblossom, was a highlight for me. I loved their banter and found it added much-needed warmth and humour throughout the book. That said, Shade’s tendency to get repeatedly tranced, glamoured, and hypnotised by the same people was frustrating. Maybe it was because she was still a newly trained witch, but I found it tiresome. This was a surprisingly enjoyable read, and I’d definitely pick up the next book in the series to see how Shade grows.
