“E l’ommini accusì viveno ar monno…”

È la Roma papalina della prima metà dell’Ottocento, quella immortalata nei sonetti di Giuseppe Gioachino Belli: popolani e nobili, servi e padroni, pontefici, cardinali e monsignori, preti, fraticelli, padri confessori, boia, meretrici, ebrei del Ghetto, santi e dannati, giacobini e carbonari.
Un grande affresco di cui ogni singolo sonetto costituisce un colorato vivacissimo quadretto, dove risuonano non soltanto preghiere in processione e benedizioni papali, ma anche (e soprattutto) imprecazioni, volgarità e schietto vociare di piazze e mercati dell’Urbe. Per chi, come me, non è madrelingua, il romanesco del Belli potrebbe non risultare a tratti troppo scorrevole, al contrario di quello di Trilussa, ma di certo è sempre spassoso. L’autore, acuto osservatore e testimone del suo tempo, non risparmia niente e nessuno, puntando il dito contro la corruzione morale e materiale insita anzitutto nel clero fino al massimo vertice; nei suoi sonetti, irriverenti, dissacranti, licenziosi, a loro modo filosofeggianti, a parlare sono per lo più popolani d’ogni risma che riflettono su come va il mondo e le ingiustizie della vita, senza lesinare un pensiero nemmeno a chi occupa il soglio di san Pietro…

e no a modo de tutte le nazzione.

Lèveje a un omo er gusto de l’ucello,

e co le guardie a vista a lo sportello.

Chiudeje l’osteria, nègheje er gioco,
fàllo sempre campà co la pavura
der barbiere, der medico e der coco:

E’ vvita da fà gola e llusingatte?
Pe mé, inzin che nun vado in zepportura,
maggno un tozzo e arittoppo le ciavatte.

Very entertaining. Belli wrote more than 2,000 sonnets, so these are selected ones. I wonder how they were chosen? And who were they chosen by? Maybe Mike Stocks, the translator.

Speaking of translation, the book has the original Italian on the left, and Stocks' translation on the right. Their rhyme schemes never match up! It must've been a huge challenge to translate this.

Belli makes writing sonnets look easy, effortless even. Writing sonnets is hard, but writing funny sonnets is insane. But maybe being funny wasn't the primary goal.

Each sonnet is a different character from the streets of 19th century Rome. But these voice aren't exactly lovingly captured, they always have a pretty mocking tone. Although the sonnets are fun to read, the mission to write as all these different people is the most memorable part. I'll come back to this.

没想到成为全中国最懂罗马文学的人还挺容易hhh。比想象中还要好(可能也有编选的功劳)。如果要对比的话,我觉得哥尔多尼的方言更自由、更自足,和真实的结合更加深刻,但贝利的方言更自觉,更有力(因为有更多的东西可以破坏),而且他对现实的社会学观察更加精准(可能因为他其实对“人民”并不同情)。或许可以说哥尔多尼是最后一位伟大的俗语作者,而贝利是第一位(或者唯一一位)方言大诗人。ps:我很尊敬Spagnoletti,但我觉得这个版本的导读(尽管很有用但)已经可以更新了,我们现在理应处在一个能比他这一代人更好地讨论相关问题的位置上。(我的意思是能不能别再拉踩曼佐尼了啊啊啊。)

Ve meritate Alberto Sordi! Ve lo meritate! ...e prima di lui ci siamo meritati Giuseppe Gioachino Belli. Che quando vide, non solo non distolse lo sguardo ma alla scenetta ci fece pure una bella fotografia, lampi su questa 'ggente stanca; e ci credo, dopo duemilasettecento anni di palcoscenico anche il pi� consumato attore sente l'usura e la voglia di congedare gli spettatori con un sipario some questo: �Annatevene via tutti, lassatece pi�gne da soli�.

I had never read any 19th-century Italian poetry before I came across this book of poetry at a random book sale. The sonnet collection provides very harsh criticism of contemporary moral, religious and political situations -- dealing with anything from prostitution, poverty, death, squalor etc.
