Kate Kenyon #1

The Painted Messiah

Rate this book
Kate Kenyon, the wealthy young widow of an English aristocrat, has an addiction to mortal risk. She feeds it by engaging in the armed robbery with her accomplice and lover Ethan Brand. Their latest target is a priceless "Byzantine" icon. So far they have never had to shoot anyone—this time will be different. Retired CIA man Thomas Malloy is hired by a rich but ailing televangelist to courier his newly acquired painting from a Zurich bank to the local airport. Malloy anticipates trouble, but not the maelstrom of bullets and betrayal that threatens to pull him under. Sir Julian Corbeau is an international criminal holed up in Switzerland to avoid U.S. extradition. He is also the sadistic head of the modern Knights Templar. He had the painting and now seeks a bloody revenge on those who stole it. The secrets of the painting gradually unfold to reveal how the only true image of Christ could exert so malignant an influence on all those who possess it.

Φευ..😥

This one's a strange one--I picked it up from Iambik in a bout of trying new things outside my usual reading zone. It's a thriller novel, primarily about some people trying to steal an old painting from other people, with lots of bizarre folk all over the world involved.

But it's also a historical novelization of the life of Pontius Pilate, leading up to and ending with the story of Christ. (The painting is one supposedly commissioned by Pilate on the morning of Jesus's crucifixion, which turns up in a Swiss occultist's private library two thousand years later.) These parts were the best. Well researched, and brought to life in surprisingly good fashion.

The modern-day thriller scenes were...well, they were what they were supposed to be. Good enough, I guess; nothing super exciting, although I admit this is not a genre I normally play in. Getting it in audiobook format definitely helped, since it was closer to the movie this book wanted to be.

Overall, better than I expected, with some surprisingly interesting bits, but a lot of dull in between.

I'm not usually a fan of the action thriller with a mystical subplot. Naturally, I read the Da Vinci code (who hasn't except die hard religious fundamentalists?)and found it fairly enjoyable like most people. But Craig Smith's novel was an absolute blinder -- I couldn't stop turning the pages and the historical flashbacks really raised the overall quality of the novel into a thoughtful and exciting read from start to finish. Look out for The Blood Lance, too, where he achieves the same successful effect.

Religious conspiracy - not as good as Dan Brown's books, but an easy read

Nearly gave up reading couldn't quite get into it as quick as other books I've read but persevered, quite slow in pace compared to other writers of this genre.

Quite good story, but I have a feeling, that there was to little description of the painting, and it's history.
