Twelve fighters enter, one fighter leaves—who will win the 12th Zodiac War?

Every 12 years, 12 fighters take the form of the Chinese zodiac and engage in a battle royale. With their strength and mysterious powers, they fight to the death and the sole survivor is granted the ultimate prize—any wish.

With several of the fighters already dead, the Zodiac War is in full swing! The biggest danger the remaining fighters face is Usagi, the fighter of the Rabbit. He has the unique ability to control the dead bodies of those he’s slain, putting his opponents at a huge disadvantage! While Usagi and his undead army rampage in the streets above, Chicken and Rat lay low underground with Monkey, who is determined to settle the battle with as few deaths as possible.

Ooooh this was badass. I really love how unpredictable the fights are, and I love seeing people go down in creative and violent ways when you expect them to come out on top.

Looks like it's a fairly short series so I'll try and power through it this month I think!

I figured I needed to finish off some of the shorter manga series I have started, and since this is one I know the plot of (I watched the anime a while back) it seems to go a bit quicker. So far it hasn't differentiated itself much, which is okay I suppose since I would classify this series as 'stupid fun'.
It's all very middle of the road for me, though I do enjoy some of the character designs as well as some of their powers. I just find much of it disappointingly quick.

(Contains some spoilers.)

I think, once I knew more what to expect of this series, I had a much better time of it. I was so caught off guard by all the violence, I hadn't realized I was going into a battle royale type of situation when I started the first volume. Now I do, though.
This volume kills off a few more characters. The chicken, which is too bad, and a few others, though some of them unsurprising. We get to see what the drunken tiger has in store, which is interesting. There are a few characters that are clear front runners, but I think they're going to throw in a surprise at some point. I'm curious to see which character is the biggest surprise, or who wins this whole thing.
This series is a mess. It's a bloody, violent, cruel mess. I wasn't into it when I started the first one, but now I really want to know who survives this thing.

A review copy was provided by the publisher, VIZ Media, for an honest review. Thank you so, so much!

Vol.2 picks up right where vol. 1 left off, 3 warriors are dead and now the focus is on Monkey and why she wants to choose peace as her wish. She is frustrated with Rat since she sees him as a naive child and how he can never understand her views and her choices that she's had to make in the past.

While Monkey and Rat are having this discussion underground, Ox faces off against Chicken, and Tiger faces off against Sheep. After being forced out of the sewers Rat and Monkey face off against Rabbit and Snake. Rabbit had the advantage since he has his "friends" helping him out.

By the end of this volume 3 more warriors are dead, and only 6 remain.

I don't know if I still have my receipt from 2nd & Charles, but I don't see a discount sticker on this volume, so I hope they didn't charge me $9.99 for a book that's clearly pre-owned....

Anyway, three more deaths: Chicken, Monkey, Sheep. Three or so fights (we might include all the zombies under Rabbit as one "Rabbit vs. Monkey" fight, especially since we don't even see Rat actually engage in combat): Ox vs. Chicken, zombie birds vs. Monkey and Rat, zombie Snake vs. Monkey, Rabbit vs. Monkey, Snake vs. Rat, Sheep vs. Tiger.

Tiger is now the only living girl to provide fanservice.

Every once in a while, we get a gratuitous butt-shot. Fan-service, anyone? Somehow I want to see how stupidly this thing ends. Most of the text is skippable, so it's a fast read.

Several more fighters are killed. Most underestimate their opponents and are killed by swords or claws. Deception is key for the winners, but eventually true skill will also make an appearance.

The Fighter of the Sheep and I share a birthday so that's neat. I probably should have made sure that the library owned all 4 books before starting this series. Unfortunately it looks like the fun ends here.

What I feared might happen… happened! The story is going nowhere and we stretch everything as possible to make it last. This is unfortunate because the start was very promising but I won’t continue after that one.

Genres: Horror, Action, & Chinese Zodiac
Book Style: Manga (Japanese Comics - Read Right to Left)

I decided to read Juni Taisen: Zodiac War by Akira Akatsuki, Nisioisin & Hikaru Nakamura because I've read volume 1 and wanted to see how the battel plays out from where I felt off. Once I started reading this book I was ready for the very insane, action packed and gory of a story! I really love how this story is written because you can't figure out what's gonna happen next; very unpredictable and shocking. Each Zodiac character has special abilities when it come to the fighting and each of them has an interesting backstory. I really love the art style because it's very clear to see, each character has a special design so you know which zodiac animal they are, and the action/gory scenes are incredible! My favorite fighters so far would be The Fighter of the Rabbit: Usagi because he's just insane and you don't know what's he's going to do next in battel and I also like The Fighter of the Ox: Ushii because he's very fast and smooth with his style of battling. It's better to not say too much about this book because it's better to read that way. I would recommend this book to horror fans because this give you plenty of it and the storyline is amazing! I can't wait to read volumes 3 & 4 to finish the series!
