You've heard of the Sand Man. Meet his counterpart, the Sand Maiden.

For fans of Sarah J. Maas and Elise Kova comes the first in a new series. It's a sprint through the unique mythos of Dream realm that is emotionally driven, page turning, and addictive.

She's been doing it her entire immortal existence. But unbeknownst to her, the most powerful king in Dream realm has set his sights on Ali's current charge, Prince Kovis Altairn, to exploit him in his quest to conquer Wake realm.

When Ali discovers the nefarious scheme, she is faced with a decision that will forever alter her fate as well as that of Wake. Will she flee Dream, something that has never been tried and could kill her, or stay and hope she can endure the consequences, because cooperation isn't an option.

Thank you L.R.W. Lee for this amazing opportunity to beta read Rock-A-Bye Baby!!! This was such a great addition to the already amazing story Lullaby. It was really interesting to get to learn about Ali's past and all about Dream Realm and how things work on the opposite side of the sand man / sand maiden relationships. I loved getting to know all of Ali's siblings and getting to see their relationships with each other and their parents and grandparents! And not to mention, getting a sneak peak into Kovis's dreams and even learning a bit about him as a child in the process!! If you loved Lullaby then this is a great addition to the world of the Sand Maidens and I guarantee you will love it as well!

DNF on page 25

This was one of the worst things I've ever read, but it was entertainingly bad. I probably would have continued, just for the laughs, if I didn't have a huge TBR pile looming over me.

But if you're interested in the concept but don't want to read a dreadful romance, then check out Gossamer by Lois Lowry. It's essentially the same idea but infinitely better.

Y'all, I couldn't get behind this book at all.

Ali (who's immortal, mind you) acts like a full blown child. She has a STUFFED UNICORN 🙄 and worships her Dad even though she's 400+ years old.

I also still don't understand quite how "weaving dreams" works. It wasn't explained well or thoroughly enough to grasp.

The time line is jumpy. So jumpy. I have no idea what year it is or where I was in the story. It would change so fast I was losing my mind over it.

My understanding is that this is a prequel novel. But based off of other reviews and what I've interpreted so far, there's no point in reading the first official book. Or finishing this one for that matter.

I was really pleased with my ARC copy of Rock-A-Bye-Baby.

We follow Ali through her earlier years as a Dream Realm citizen, leading up to her big arrival in Wake Realm. This prequel was so thorough in giving us multiples scenes that had an impact on Ali, that it leaves no doubt as to the quality of soul our heroine has: kind, pure, brave, capable.

I especially loved the book's story of creation here, and all the Greek myth references, and the unique and 'otherworldly' descriptions of Dream Realm. I wanna go to a banquet there just to ask what each and every dish and drink is called! And there's not just Hellenic lore here, the origins and backstory for many of the individuals and creatures will also satisfy your curiosity about Dream Realm and even some history of Wake Realm through the ages.

Rock-A-Bye-Baby is an excellent companion for Lullaby. It might even read more like a prequel than a novella, but it's one of the best, most explanatory, I've read across many a series!

Brilliant and inventive!

If you are a fan of Strange the Dreamer and Elise Kova’s Air Awakens series, you’ve found your next fix!

I loved the uniqueness of this story. Ali is a dream weaver and ushers thoughts, intentions, and goodwill to her assigned human dreamer. When she becomes the “sand maiden” for Prince Kovis she finds herself feeling more than she should.

War has surrounded her hundreds of years of life, both in her world of Dream and her dream charges world of Wake. Though always the most positive of people, Ali begins to see her father for who he is truly and the warmonger hungering inside.

This book is so much about love of family, the bonds it creates, the protective nature for the innocent, and the light you can find in everyone. I fully recommend this book as it was full of depth, rich storytelling, excellent fantasy, and love. I cannot wait to read the next book!

DNF'd at 13%.

I just can't get with it. You see this fierce protagonist on the cover and we get a 170 yr old who sews stuffed unicorns, naively adores her father, and has no interesting traits to speak of.

There's no inciting incident, or introduction to plot. No hooks or Barb's to pull the reader in.

It skips through time, giving us information we don't need.

Maybe I shouldn't have read the prequel first. The writing itself isn't bad, it's the construction of the story and it's characters.

When I think of fantasy, I think of the usual witches and warlocks, fairies, mermaids, etc. I've literally never even heard of a book concept that centers around the so-called "sand man" (or, in this case, sand maiden), the being we all grew up referencing that lures you to sleep and crafts your dreams.
This book is split into three parts and, of the three, I think part one was my favorite. The world-building and backstory in the first part is absolutely incredible - I don't know how in the world L.R.W. Lee was able to spin and introduce so many characters (over twenty characters are siblings and that doesn't even count the number of people in the rest of the family or out of it), but she did so incredibly well, and, for the most part, all of the going back and forth between timelines in part one was easy to keep up with. However, there was one thing that was a little difficult to follow, and that was the passage of time. In this story, I understand that "sun = one day," "moon = one night" and "annum = one year." However, there were other time measurements - like, there was something called a sennight I think, or something like that? - that I, personally, found a little confusing. However, the melting pot that is Alli's relationship with her father is written in a heartbreakingly mortifying (for Alli) way that, just, makes you wonder why people - immortal sand kings, more specifically - have to frickin suck so much, and that part was apparent no matter how slightly-confusing the timeline itself was.
I liked part two as well, though, compared to part one I do think it was a tad bit dull - a good majority of the section is just Alli speaking with her aunt's about her charge's fate. However, this part definitely had some interesting qualities as well - the aunts themselves sort of remind me of the Fates that cut the threads of lives in 1997's 'Hercules,' and revealing Kovis's backstory has the same amount of emotion and horror as Alli's relationship with her father does - if not more so. However, I call it sort of dull because, even though I liked the aunts, I feel like revealing the backstory could have been done in a slightly more... entertaining(?) way. I know that this book is a prequel and so, obviously, includes none of the main events of the rest of the series, but Alli's talk with her aunts, as well as the parental relationship in part one, all sort of feels like one big info dump. It was written incredibly well - the imagery, in particular, is amazing - but that doesn't quite distract from what this book really is - and after awhile, a bunch of dialogue did become a bit tiresome.
Part three was the shortest part of this book and I'm not going to spoil it because, aside from something that happens in part two, I think it was the most important part of this prequel. I will say that, though I feel like the ending was a tad abrupt, it leads very well into the next (which I guess would technically be the 'first') book. And Alli's father is angry with her for a very particular reason - I won't spoil it here, but the way in which he becomes so controlling is definitely creepy, and I could definitely see him as being a very strong, solid villain for later books.
Overall, I think that the whole 'sandman' plot is definitely unique, and this book - though a bit info-dumpy - definitely provides you with enough information to want to know what happens in the main series. Alli herself has to consider some very big things she will have to give up by the end of the story, and it's interesting to ponder how her father will react to her decision. For a prequel, Rock-A-Bye Baby is definitely solid!

Rock-A-Bye Baby is the Prequel to Lullaby. The first book of the sand maiden series which centered on Alissandra "Ali" and her ability to weave humans dreams. Ali's father wanted to use her unique bond with Prince Kovis to control him and to take control of Wake realm for himself. When Ali refused to help him, her sister devised a plan to transport her from Dream realm to Wake. Once in Wake, Ali came face to face with Kovis, who was unaware of Dream realm but was intrigued by Ali's story and her special gifts. The two develop this magical bond that was delightful to read about.

Rock-A-Bye Baby begins the story about four hundred years before the events in the first book. It is separated into three parts, Wake, REM, and Nightmare. Each chapter reflects different periods of time, in annums (years), sometimes moons (months), and suns (days) shifting from the past to present time. Alissandra is a part of a huge family consisting of multiple siblings, grandparents and a father who is a force not to be reckoned with. Kovis and Ali's backstories are rounded out and the world of Dream and Wake are further explained. We learn how Ali received her training as a sand maiden and what each human charge she's had means to her. At the same time, the family dynamics that exist between Ali and her siblings and the destructive path their father takes as he tries to claim the seven nations of Dream to become Emperor was further explored. So many of the things that I was curious about after reading Lullaby really came together in the prequel. Most shockingly was Ali and her father's relationship. The highs and lows that they experienced, I really came to loathe his volatile temper and the way that he manipulated Ali. It's no wonder Ali feared for her life and made her escape from Dream to Wake realm.

Oh and the lovely backstory about Kovis, how Ali became his sand maiden, the development of her feelings for him. The problems that she helped him with through weaving his dreams and the insights into his relationship with his siblings. All the difficulties he experienced growing up, his past romantic relationships and how those things impacted him. The politics of Wake realm and how both Kovis and Ali's fathers were on a quest for power. Everything seemed to provide a deeper understanding of the characters, their motivations and like I said before, it really rounds out the story thus far. Yet at the same time added an interesting new element, Ali's aunts, who resemble the three fates from Greek mythology. They were quite the characters and I'm hoping that somehow they will feature in a future book in the series. Again, I must caution that this book is New Adult, there is mature content including sexual abuse, putting this in the 18+ realm for me.

I know that we shouldn't judge a book by its cover but... I just want to take a moment to say that I just adore this cover so much! It's absolutely incredible.

I really loved reading about Alissandra and the world of Dream. I love the worlds that the author has created. It's so unique, with Dream mirroring Wake - the human world. I love the exploration of the Sand Man mythos, there is something so wonderfully enchanting about Sand Maidens.

The first half of the book focus on the world-building and exploring Alissandra's character and getting to know her and her large family. I really loved Alissandra's character, she was so optimistic and engaging but also so naive. Ali was so well written, it was so amazing that she was so self aware but also so innocent. It was difficult reading in places, seeing her father manipulate her with such ease.

The second half of the book focuses a little more on the plot and along with Ali, we get to see the lengths her father is wiling to go to in order to achieve his plans. I don't want to say to much about the plot for fear of spoiling anything, but I will say that the book ends on a cliffhanger and I am desperate to read on to the next book Lullaby.

I loved Rock-A-Bye-Baby so much, I would definitely recommend it for any fans of fantasy. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read filled with interesting characters, incredible lore and world building and a villain I really loved to hate.

I'll keep this review brief, as this is a short prequel novel, so there isn't a lot to unpack.
1. I haven't read this whole series yet, so I can't be certain, but based off my reading of this alone, I think that this book needs to be read to understand the rest of the series (even though it's just a prequel). It also needs to be read first (which the author has stated in a response to someone's question), despite Goodreads listing it as book 2 in the series.
2.This book contains a scene of sexual assault, so if that will trigger you, this might not be the book for you.
3. My thoughts: this book (as I mentioned) is really short, so I'm not super connected to any of these characters yet, but so far I'm really interested in the series as a whole. This book's plot and world building, though a bit confusing at times, are really interesting. The whole idea of writing a book based off of sandman lore is really cool and an under-utilized myth to retell in the fantasy genre.
This was more of a check in on my thoughts so far than it was a review, lol. I'm sure there's more to say about these characters and this universe, but being that this book is really just an intro to the plot and world building of the first real book, Lullaby, I don't feel the need to talk about it at length. Overall, I enjoyed this book. The characters and world building were fun, and I'm excited to see the plot really pick up in the next novel.

I really enjoyed Rock-A-Bye Baby. I figured ahead of time at what point in the story the book would end based on how many pages were left (it was a very satisfying end point and made perfect sense). I will definitely be continuing on with the series. The facts of the fantasy world are laid out through flashbacks which are very effective at showing what brought us to the point where the story begins. The author is very adept at using words and descriptions that are quite clever. For example, the sandmen and maidens are a sort of birdlike creature and when they greet each other they give a peck on the cheek. I occasionally found myself just sitting and savoring the excellent way something was phrased before going on with my reading. I highly recommend this book to late teens/early twenties and on up!

Originally I thought this story wasn't going to be interesting, the layout was confusing and it was hard to follow. As I read I found out I was so wrong. Part one has a unique layout that was a little confusing at first but made perfect sense about half way through. It really sets up the rest of the story and I became captivated. I really think it is a story worth reading and I am looking forward to reading more.

If you liked seeing Ali in Wake Realm and how she adjusted to living with Kovis and Keenan while she trains to become a healer, but wonder about her past then Rock-A-Bye Baby is the perfect read for you. It is a prequel so tells us about events before Ali lands in wake, and we also find out WHY she ends up there too.
This prequel gives us a lot of background to Ali, her brothers and sisters in Dream Realm, how she came to have Kovis as a charge and how she weaved his dreams. As well as that, we learn more about Mares, and her extended family who I am hoping to see more of in Book 2. The aunts who we meet, although feared, hide a piece of themselves, but allow Ali in when judging Kovis. We also find out more about her father, the King of Dream, who is trying to take over other parts of the realm that relate to the parts of Wake Realm. This way we get to see the battle from both sides.

Ali is a strong dream weaver who is a Princess of the Realm. She has had her father on a pedestal for far too long and we witness his downfall in this prequel.

An Interesting Idea That Is Panning Out Well!!💤💭🌛 A 4.25 Star Read 🌟

I really loved the concept of this book from the get go. I know it's had a couple revisions & you can tell by its pace & flow that they've obviously been successful!!👍

The main character, Alissandra, is a Sandmaiden. She weaves the dreams for countless humans throughout her immortal life in the Realm of Dream, where she's a Princess with 21 siblings.💕 Her current charge is Prince Kovis, he's an identical twin & also has a sister 2 years older.👑 Ali has always cared deeply for her charges but this one has been different, even from when he was in his Mother's womb!🙏🌟

As her Father, the King, becomes obsessed with reclaiming his power he gave away. Ali's sunshine & rainbows outlook on her life, her parents & especially her Dad start to crumble!😳😢 Can she protect Kovis & the Wake Realm (🌎), will she fully realise the deep trouble she's in & can she escape & be saved from the Evil rising against her??😳😕

I really enjoyed this story. The characters are nice, on the whole, and the naivety & hopeful happiness that Ali projects is just who she is, it's endearing!😍 I can't wait to get to know the people we've only met through dreams so far!!🙏🎉 Poor Rasa 😭 Can I just say - I loved the crone sister's 😎😂

Roll on Book #2 🌟

What can I say about this book except that it was awesome! I love the whole Dream and Wake world idea and how they mirror each other. I loved the whole concept from the dream people helping humans go to sleep to the most delicious sounding fantasy dishes. There is nothing bad to say about this book. I can't wait to start reading the second book, Lullaby.

My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 Unicorns - I really liked it!!!
***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!! Yes, I got a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book! I do own this book and book 1 in the series!

The cover is beautiful!

This is a prequel in the Sand Maiden series! I do think that you should read book 1 first in my opinion which is the order written. Prequels are hard to decide if you should read first or in the order written, but I think you should decide for yourself. This is for adults as it does hit on sensitive topics like rape.

I loved reading about Ali’s life in Dream realm, and it helps you understand more about her and what was happening before she went to Wake realm. The only thing that is a little confusing is when the book is jumping time periods, but the dates in the parentheses do help you sort it out better.

I love Ali’s passion for her family and her dream charges. There was a lot going on in her past when she was immortal. I think I initially forgot about that because in Wake she is just a young lady. The author does a great job taking you on an emotional journey with Ali. I enjoyed reading and learning more about the Dream realm and Ali’s family which is big 😊

I recommend this book to all the Lullaby fans because you will want to learn more about Ali’s past and to all the fans who want a fantasy about the Sand Man and his family! I can’t wait to get back to what is currently happening in Wake realm!!

Alisandra, the daughter of the dream ruler is shuffling through her memories, trying to recall why her father is angry with her. She is a dream weaver and suspects his anger stems from her latest dream charge, who she’s happened to fall in love with.

The first 60% of the book is nothing more than Alisandra’s reflections. She idolizes her father and vies against her 21 other siblings to win title of ‘favorite daughter.’ But all through these memories, the reader watches as the veil of ignorance is lifted and Ali see’s her father for what he truly is.

He is not a likable character. He has over twenty children with one woman, yet never marries her. Then, he picks up a mistress and uses her for information about her dream charge only to discard her once the charge dies. He is constantly looking for a way into war and his children are nothing but pawns to gain what he wants.

By the time Ali realizes her fathers’ true motives, it may be too late. She’s faced with a decision. Stay and fight against her tyrant father, or escape into Wake realm where she will become human but be united with her charge. If she stays in Dream Realm, she’s a good as dead. But she may not survive the transition into Wake Realm.

The book started off fairly slow with Alissandra sounding very juvenile. As the book progressed, and she began to care about other issues in the world besides daddy’s affection, the storyline became interesting. I am excited to find out how book two shapes her character as I expect Ali will grow tremendously with the new transitions she is facing.

I really enjoyed Rock A Bye Baby. I loved Lullaby when I read it and was so excited to hear that LW Lee was coming out with a prequel to her first novel. We met so many fanstic characters and read such amazing descriptions of Lee's new world, that I had high hopes for an amazing story in the prequel. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed! I loved learning about the special people in Ali's life while living in Dream Relam. Three new characters we meet in RABB have quickly become some of my favorite characters from a book. All of the characters have depth and great back stories. You just want to jump into the book with them and have a conversation with them. You wish they were real and there with you, giving you advice, listening to your sorrows and woes, and also cracking jokes that make you laugh. Lee's story telling is wonderful and she creates such a vivid world that you wish was real...well minus one particular terrifying aspect. If you like fantasy and are interested in a new take on the myth of the Sand Man, the Sand Maiden series is for you!! 10/10 already reading again.

I recieved this book as a beta ARC reader. I gave this book 5 stars because I felt like this book was really gearing you up for the series. Being a prequel it really gives you a lot of information an the characters, sometimes I did feel like it gave too much information, however, I understand what the author was trying to do here. The author has created another world that I haven't personally experienced and I genuinely enjoyed reading about it. I did feel like the main character was very young and naive regardless of her immortal age, so I am hoping the author grows her character some in the books to follow. Overall though I felt Rock-A-Bye Baby set the scene and really dug into the characters to develop the series and I am excited to see where she takes it in the books to follow. I have a feeling there will be some trials and tribulations that the characters will have to fight to overcome.

I feel a bit bad for not enjoying this one. I wasn't sure whether I was supposed to read Lullaby first, maybe I would've enjoyed it more if I had.

I liked that it was easy to read, and I flew through this one really quickly. I thought the Dream world was interesting, but a little underdeveloped. The pacing was a little off and the time frames during the beginning was somewhat confusing. I also felt that at times there was too much info dumps.

Furthermore I wasn't particularly invested in any of the characters, and when I wasn't interested I was frustrated by them. I think this had a lot of potential, but I think that part of the problem was that I read this first when I really should've picked up Lullaby instead.

Prequel to Lullaby, rock-a-bye-baby fills the gaps! Reading Lullaby left me desperate to read more in to Ali's life as a sand maiden and what her life was like in dream realm.

In the book we get to see Ali's struggles as she adapts to being a dream weaver for Prince Kovis as well as her relationships around her family, especially around her father and sister. There are also sneaky peaks of Prince Kovis growing up through the years.

We are also introduced to her Aunts which quickly became one of my favourite characters. They are the much needed fun factor that balances and compliments the story.

A lot of emotional depth has went into this book and as you read it, you quickly get caught up on the emotional rollercoaster of Ali's life.

A much needed story for any Lullaby fan that takes you in to another fun filled, excited, emotional journey of Dream Realm.

Unlike so many other reviews for this book this is first Sand maiden book, I only realised this was a prequel after reading reviews from other people and after reading this one I will definitely be moving on to lullaby. Lee’s vision of dream world was a perfect balance between captivatingly beautiful and unsettling. The relationships between Ali and the majority of her family was beautiful and I really enjoyed getting to know them (even if I can’t remember all their names). I can’t wait to read what happens to Ali in wake!

I love the setup for this book! I have not read any other books in this world so for me at times the terminology and descriptions of characters were a little confusing but after the first few chapters I got the hang of it! Keeping track of the main characters large family it was a little difficult as well as keeping most of the other names straight! But once I got through the first few chapters this book was absolutely amazing! The world that is set up and the twists and turns that it take you on can't be missed!

The story has a different feel to it than others I have read. I have to admit it took me a little bit to get into the story but I did find it intriguing as it continued.

This first book introduces you to a world where the family members are assigned to guide dreams. Ali feels a deep connection to her charge and it leads to a confrontation with her father and difficult choices. Her family relations are very complicated.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.

Fantastically inspiring, and emotionally driven; the prequel to Lullaby might be short, but it still packs a pretty punch. I sprinted through the 200ish paged book, devouring people, places, and stories from the mysterious Dream Realm. There were new characters to love, and delicious dishes to imagine - human and food variety alike. I anticipate the next instalment with bated breath!

Prequel to lullaby, helps to introduce the so far unseen Dream realm! This filled in gaps I didn’t know where there! We get to see the events leading up to Ali’s arrival in Wake and find out more of the history of how it all came to be. Left me wanting more and still some some questions to be answered.
Looking forward to the next instalment!!

This prequel of Lullaby is absolutely amazing. It clarifies everything leading up to the 1st book. It makes waiting for the 2nd book of the series tormenting because you just want to see how everything will unfold with Ali and Kovis.

I really liked this book. Being a dream weaver who is also the daughter of the God of dreams and to make it harder on her she fells for her assigned dreamer!!! This is a prequel and really peaked my interest, planning to read the series
