Death should have been the end, but instead, it’s the start of my revenge... and they won’t see me coming.
Evie survived a trip to hell, literally, to find herself somewhere even more dangerous, with the angels. Angels who do not want to let her leave, not without a paying a price for the life they saved.
Angels. Demons. Protectors and more secrets than one world should hold. Who can Evie trust when everything is a lie? When it’s time for the assassin to return, and to claim what is hers, who will be on her side?
G. Bailey is a USA Today bestselling author of books that are filled with everything from dragons to pirates. Plus, fantasy worlds and breath-taking adventures. Oh, and some swoon-worthy men that no girl could forget. G. Bailey is from the very rainy U.K. where she lives with her husband, two children and three cheeky dogs.
So, maybe this book wasn't as good as the previous one. So, maybe this book had a gigantic cliffhanger. So, maybe some things weren't perfect.
But it's still a fun series, although it might be a good idea to have all the books handy once you start reading it. What if you like it and want to continue but can't? It's an awful feeling
It's the kind of UF series you read because you want a UF but can't find anything amazing out there (you're probably read most of them already). It's a really fast read and worth a weekend in bed.
Runes of Mortality was an okay book. I feel like it did suffer the whole second book syndrome that some series tend to deal with. In it, you will still meet Evie. She just woke up from being stabbed, ouch, and is in a while realm. No biggie - right?
The one thing that I did like about this book was getting to know more about her. Not just hers but the guys as well. It was an interesting route to take, a bit boring as well, but enjoyable. This book was okay really. Nothing memorable happened and I just kind of zoned in and out of it. If I had to take a test on this, I would probably fail because nothing really stuck out to me.
Overall, I'm glad that I'm done with it and getting closer to finishing off this series. Let's pray the next book is a lot better.
I am enjoying this series more than I thought that I would.
In this book we find out who Evie's dad is and she claims her birth right as princess of the Protectors. This book is typical of most RH's series with the secret pack not to touch Evie, although this pack is a little different because almost all of the guys have admitted that they want Evie with the exception of the one typical asshole of the group.
I can't wait to read about the test and see Evie destroy Erica.
I really enjoyed thus book it was a bit slower then the last book and more of a setup for things to come, but I enjoyed it all the way through.
The book gives more of an insight into a couple of the characters that did not get as much time in the last book. Though this is still Evie's story she goes not just take centre stage but demands it.
There are plenty of revelations about Evie's past and her destinies. Yes like most things she has more then one.
As much as I enjoyed this book, now that the process are in place and the gauntlet has been thrown down I am expecting a whole load of action in the next book of the series.
WHY WHY WHY. I just finished this book on an airplane ride and I can’t download more books. At least I finished this one. I’m writing this review in my notes so I don’t forget the goodness I just read.
Q U I C K read, this one.
Hell yes, it’s still good. Loving the guys perspectives. This is a first. Team Azi. All I’m saying is this story just keeps getting better.
Honestly, very surprised to see this author co-wrote the Marked series because that series was a fucking mess. *horrible flashbacks of whiny and self-centered heroines ensues*
Evie, thank goodness her name doesn’t end in -ina because usually those chicks suck balls- and not just literally, ANYWAY. Evie ranks in my top 20 heroines out of all the books I’ve read in the past year. Which is actually saying a lot. I like the dynamic that the person she loves and protects most isn’t an annoying/deranged bff.. nope. It’s her deceased best friend’s daughter. Ten points for Gryffindor for originality. *golf claps*
The fact that she didn’t even HESITATE to wipe out a certain keeper just had me screaming YASSSSS QUEEEEEEN while opening a bottle of champagne. A toast, to all the women who love throwing daggers.
I need better hobbies.
So this book is interesting to me because literally every prediction I have is WRONG. Wtf. This never happens. Color me shocked.
The editing did not improve all that much and I would really like to discuss why learned is spelled learnt, unless that’s something they do across the pond. Someone please enlighten me.
V excited to read book 3. I assume by the awfully dry snail trying to trek across concrete slow pace of the love pentagon that this series will be 4-5 booker. I’m here for it.
Evie wakes up from her stabbing in a strange realm that is all white. She learns she is half-angel and who her father is - yay! With the help of Azi, she escapes the realm to return to Earth and begin to claim her birthright. Revenge on her sister will just be a bonus. Oh! And as she prepares herself, she might make out with the guys a little.
Yeah, ok. I like Evie and I like the group of guys she has surrounded herself with, and I even want to know how the story will progress in the next book. But, I felt like I was just getting going with the book and it ended abruptly, in a strange place. Because I write reviews after I finish a book, the ending is kind of important. How I feel at the end is going to determine my rating. I felt like my copy was missing pages. I kept flipping them at the end thinking, "Um what??, That's all we get?" I'm perplexed. Thus my average rating.
One would think knowing your own history should make your life easier. Evie is not so lucky and her parentage kind of pulls the ground from under her. A missing princess? Both me and her were shocked. After literally being stabbed in the back by her sister, I really want her to go dark side. I’m still shocked she’s part Angel, I definitely would have thought demon but guess since she’s feisty and naughty enough she doesn’t need a demon side 😝 Also doesn’t seem like her sister is the one running the show anyways. Not sure what the end game here is or if I can even see Evie as a Queen. At least she’ll bring harmony and stop all the useless death.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Slow start on this one but I liked how it went between Evie and Azi. Pretty much went how I expected it to go. Really curious about Seth. The guys are coping after believing their princess is dead. I’d say it picks up more towards the end, other than that it’s drawing battle lines and deciding relationships.
I’m still enjoying this series. It is an extremely slow build romance. Again my biggest issue with the book is the size. It’s just too short. We get thrown into this world of angels with little to no real explanation and I just feel it could have been so much better if we delved more into this world and the history or characters. Azi and Nix are slowly becoming my 2 favorites. I say that and then I think of how sweet Connor is. My favorite scene was definitely outside the demon nightclub. I just love how passionate she is in protecting those that need it
“The demons haven’t had a Salvatore in all their history. We have never had someone on our side who wasn’t one of us,” he says, and looks up at me.”
Also Evie is just such a fun character
“You don’t run towards an attack, Vi!” I hear Azi shout behind me, but I keep running anyway, knowing he will follow me. If you don’t run towards an attack, you are leaving yourself open for whoever it is to attack you. Or that’s my—likely messed up—logic.”
Fantastic second book. Evie has always been her own person but I think in this book she is starting to accept that she needs the men and I like seeing that side of her. It's fine being a tough chick but you have to balance it out somehow. Otherwise you are just kind of a *itch. We also get more of the men's POV. YAY for that!
This 2nd book gives us all kinds of answers about Evie’s past which gives us a more precise direction on what exactly Evie’s journey end goal. Evie is still an awesome character but her cheeky and snarky attitude was dialed back in this book compared to book 1. Maybe because her defensive walls protecting herself against others is starting to break down thanks to her 4 guys.
I loved learning about Evie’s past and finding out exactly why she is so important. The role of her being half angel and why her father had disappeared is still up in the air but I’m sure it will be addressed in the next book.
I am excited to start the next book so I am sorry for rushing through this review, but I’m impatient.
Great continuation of Evie’s story. I am so glad we learned more about her and the guys’ back stories. Trex really needs to get his head out of his ass and tell the truth and they all need to talk to Evie about the relationship idea.
The second book in the series continues right where the first left off. She discovers the truth of her past and risks everything to claim what is hers. I love the interactions between her and the men who want to belong to her.
Evie is discovering who she is, her parents, and the secrets of her birth. On top of learning the truth of her past, she is also now The Salvatore, the demons' savior. Will she be the one who will forge the peace among all the races?
3,5* Great story, it kept my interest all the time. Even tho i liked the first book more I love Evie, she's so kick ass and sassy, i like that she can fight with her hands and doe's not use only magic
This book is a wonderful continuation of Evie’s story. The mix of witches, demons and protectors makes for a very interesting storyline. Can’t wait to start book 3 in the series.
I'm up in the air about reading book 3. The reason - book two ended with changing POV from the FMC to the Antagonist. In my opinion rarely does POV change help the book., I was ok in this book when, for a chapter, it changed to the POV of one of the guys, but it was a short chapter, and it helped the story along just fine. If book 3 is going to switch POV between the FMC and the Antagonist, I probably won't bother. :(
I don’t even care that I’m still on the edge of my seat and haven’t checked the release date to ease my mind...IT WAS THAT GOOD! Evie is my new “book girl I want to come back as” crush. I’m already looking forward to the reread!
“Life has never been easy. It has been a fight, and what scares me most…when the fight is over, what will I do?”
I wish so badly that I liked ‘Runes of Mortality’ better. I enjoyed ‘Runes of Truth’ and was expecting the sequel to wow me but getting through each chapter was a chore.
Previously a fan of Evie, she let me down a bit. She is less dark and dangerous and more powerful and prissy. It doesn’t work for me, Evie felt like a character rather than allowing me to imagine a living breathing person. She likes bacon and is ‘kicks ass’- and that seems like the total sum of her identity check.
It also comes across in the weak interactions between the guys and her (dun, dun, dun) father. It’s staged and nothing really surprised me, and her ward held her back more than actually made her a more complex character (perhaps because there was no substance to her either). You can have a background to a person but their actions need to reflect that, showing it without stating it.
I’m rambling and ranting again aren’t I?
Maybe I was looking for something else out of the book, expecting a different turn of events and I hate that I was disappointed. I want to read the next out of loyalty to the first instalment but I can’t drag myself through another predictable sequel again.
“What do you plan to do?” Trex asks. “Kill Erica and take the throne. What else?”
The writing style is not for me. It reminds me of texting, short and nondescript. I feel like there is little world setup, the relationships are shallow. The grammar is not complex, very simple minded, like a tween would be talking instead of an adult.
The story line is good (why it is 2 stars instead of 1), so if you can look past some of the negative things, you might like it. I made myself read all of book one to give it a chance and could only make it to 32% percent of book two before I gave up.
Book #2 of G. Bailey's A Demon's Fall series follows Evie as she awakens in a world full of white after being stabbed by her sister while in hell. To be honest she was surprised that she woke up at all, never one to look a gift horse in the mouth however, she gets on with things. Meanwhile, the protectors are keeping Hali hidden in a safe house while, along with Azi, mourning their loss. When Azi gets news of what happened and where Evie is, things take a turn for the interesting as he promises to bring her back.
I read the first book in this series after winning it in a competition held on the author's facebook readers group. I found the story to be interesting enough, but the writing left a lot to be desired. I had high hopes that the writing in the following books would show an obvious evolution as the author grew and learnt more, but I was sorely disappointed. I do know that Bailey puts out a LOT of books out, she churns them out quite fast so I can kind of understand why I didn't see to much difference in voice of the author, but it still disappointed me. As with the first story, I found the writing to be a tad juvenile, especially considering this series is a reverse harem series that is directed at the 18+ age bracket. I also felt that there needed to be another round of two of editing, some sentence structures were just jarring and felt wrong. I found myself constantly rewriting sentences in my head while reading because they just sounded off. This isn't something that I like to do while trying to enjoy my books.
Evie hasn't changed much, she's still just trying her damn best and as badarse and snarky as usual, so I was happy about this. Though I do think she jumps to conclusions too fast, not giving others a change to actually explain their side of an event. This annoyed me. I get that she has her reasons, and I'm generally quite fond of a protagonist with flaws, but some of Evie's grate on me. As for her protector lovers, they came across incredibly mopey and desperate in this instalment. This is not attractive to me. Azi stepped up a bit in this but he also came across as very desperate at times. The relationships haven't really evolved much, except for Evie actually trusting the guys more, which I guess is a positive. Also, if you're hoping for some steamy scenes in this one, you'll be a bit disappointed. There's a quick scene between Evie and one of the protectors, but considering it's a reverse harem there's actually not really any sex happening in this instalment. I didn't mind this, I'm okay with character relationships developing before they get down and dirty, but I know that some people will be a bit disappointed if they go into this one thinking they're going to be needing a cold shower afterwards.
The premise of the story is interesting, I found it to be super enjoyable if I'm honest. I love that we got more information about Evie's lineage and history, this answered some questions left over from book 1. I also love where the story is heading, I'd be interested to see how it turns out. Even if it ends on a cliche, that's okay, I'm not worried about that, I just want it written well.
I found the pacing in this one to be off. For such a short book, it took me around 3-4 days to finish it. A book of less than 200 pages... this isn't a good thing in my eyes. There was stuff happening in the first half of the book, but it just came across as boring to me. The pacing picked up in the last quarter odd of the book, closer to the end. The action came thick and fast here and kept me interested. The beginning however, left a lot to be desired.
As much as I'd like to see how the series ends, unless Bailey's writing evolves exponentially across the next two books, I doubt that I'll carry on. The story is interesting enough to make me WANT to continue, but the writing just puts me off. I'd also like to point out that I have read another of Bailey's books apart from this series, and I quite enjoyed it. I also have a couple from another series of hers on my kindle, and I am looking forward to reading them. So it's not to say that Bailey is a bad author, she's definitely anything but that. I just feel that the writing in this series isn't as polished as I'd like it to be, therefore it's not really my cup of tea.
So Book 2 leaves off where we book 1, with Evie dying and ending up in this in-between realm in Hell (with some other otherworldly creatures!). I thought the time with these new characters was well done but loved when she got to reunite with her future harem. I liked her integrity and honor with bringing them all back to the real world, after some had been stuck for hundreds of years. In terms of the guys, I totally fell in love with Azi in this one and some of the Protectors too (not Trex haha, warming up to him but he is making it difficult at every turn haha). I loved seeing more of Hali and now I want my own magical tiger haha. I loved Evie's snark, her love of bacon (even thought I really don't like it myself haha), and how the guys lower their shields/walls with her and finally see some progress being made with them. I also loved the tension between Evie and her sister (G Bailey did a phenomenal job with the baddies in this book) and how Evie remembers her childhood/raising and she tries to see the bigger picture (not just demon, just angels, just protectors). Book 2 really brought the plot together and now they can strengthen as a team.
For the narration, again 5/5 stars for the female narrator. The anger Evie had for her father was done brilliantly, I could feel it so well and it felt very believable. For the male narrators, I thought their reactions to Evie and slowly admitting their feelings and getting to know her more was adorable and very emotional. Again, some issues with one of the male narrators and then the changing accent/voice for Azi.
Overall, another amazing book in this paranormal RH series! On to book 3 ❤️❤️❤️
Runes of Mortality picked up right where Runes of Truth left off. After being murdered by the crazy sister she just learned she had, Evie is now trapped in Hell with some angels. Now she has to find out about who she truly is, how she can get home to be with Hali and the guys, and to get her revenge!
This story moved a bit slower to me at first, due to Evie being apart from the guys and them believing she is dead for a while. But, it was an important aspect of the story, allowing Evie to learn about her true heritage. Now she's back home and with the help of her protectors and her demon Evie will beat her sister for the throne and truly serve as a protector to all who are deserving, whether they be demon or any other being.
There was a bit more world building in this book, explaining more about the world Evie lives in and the dynamics of the protectors and demons societies. While this slower reveal left me a little in the dark at some times, I do like the fact that we get to learn alongside the characters as the story unfolds.
Once Evie was reunited with her guys, this book picked up revealing even more corruption within the protector society! Evie's sister Erica may act innocent for the public, but this story shows her to be even more treacherous and plotting (and possibly even manipulated) than I initially anticipated.
But, after the ending of this story, I am definitely eager for book 3!
This book begins with a "Prologue" describing something that takes place in the middle of the book, and is unnecessary. The story really begins where the first book abruptly ended, with an unclear timeline of how long has passed - it seems like days to one character and a month to others. There isn't much plot to this book. The story that wasn't resolved in book one continues to be unresolved, with only a little more information given. But there's no tension. Characters have to wait for this or that, and then the story ends again without ever really picking up steam.
At least in the first book there was an interesting hell trekking scene where there was an understood goal to the mission, but in this one, it's just meandering around while splitting up a story into a series of standalone books that don't have enough plot or action to justify it.
I seriously finished this book like 20 minutes ago and can't remember how it ended, because it in no way felt like an ending to a coherent story - the characters were just waiting for something else to happen in a few days.
I'm not planning on reading the rest of the series - if I wanted to episodic, unfinished storytelling, I'd watch TV or read a comic book. I expect a book to tell a coherent, mostly standalone story.
Happy to report this book didn’t suffer through second book syndrome. Well, maybe it partly had second book syndrome. There wasn’t much that happened plot wise but we learned a lot more about the plans happening around Evie and her new found family so it didn’t feel as if the book dragged.
We literally where the first book left off, discovering that Evie is part angel. From there, we see the wheels of revenge set in motion for Evie. She won’t stand for her newly discovered half-sister, Erica, on the throne. If that means she’ll put herself on the throne, then so be it.
Where the plot didn’t develop, the relationships did. Despite not having much physical intimacy, there were plenty of tender moments of relationship development between Evie and her guys. We are still holding out for Trex but the boi has gotta come around at some point.
We learned more about the angels and the nefarious plans Erica has in store once she becomes queen. Wished there was a little more plot in this book but am happy where the story is heading. Now, it’ll come down to the showdown between Evie and Erica to see who will come out on top.
I felt that the overall book didn’t completely draw me into reading the rest of the series. I don’t think I’ll pick it back up immediately, but I’m sure the completionist in me will eventually come back and finish the series out.
I’m so mad because this book/series have potential but is so wasted
I mean one of the guy that didn’t like the protagonist a bit is now like let’s save her most precious thing and protect her at all cost, out of nowhere mmm no sir
And then everything is so like mm ugh I hate it here. Like ok can you elaborate with some things that don’t make sense? For once?????
Then this other guy is an addict but “if I got you I don’t need that” that is not literal is just like magic you know it doesn’t make sense, you need to address this properly cuz an addiction is something serious specially when you are hurting.
Anyway the other guys is like I’m so below the hierarchy inside our civilization that we have to hide our love in case it blooms and you are queeeen
Bla. Azi is pure love but I’m still waiting for a proper explanation about the demon he had when she send him To hell
I didn’t care enough to this point because I felt like learning the names of everyone beside Hali, Star and Azi was a waste of my time, I’ll drop this series
Sorry if I don’t make sense I’m mad and English is not my first or second language so IM SORRY
