The book I chose for my non - fiction book is called “Abraham Lincoln The Life of Americas Sixteenth President”. I give this book a 3 out of 5 stars just because this book was more information than entertaining for a graphic novel. This book was about Abraham Lincoln’s life and how he became president and his journey while being president. This book talks about slavery, political parties, his assassination, etc. I think the author achieved his purpose of this book, I think his main purpose was to educate kids through a graphic novel instead of big textbooks. I think this book is effective just to show kids what it was like back then. I think the beginning of the book was weak because there wasn’t a good hook to bring the reader in. This book gave me more information about Lincoln and his journey through being a president. I recommend this book to someone who wants to learn about the U.S history and doesn’t want to read a big long boring essay.
The life of Abraham Lincoln in graphic novel form, however, with not as much emphasis on his personality as I would have liked, but a fairly easy to follow summary of the Civil War and issues that caused it. One of his speeches during the debates with Stephen Douglas was edited in such a way as to be more favorable to Lincoln, which I found unfortunately obfuscating.
I found the information to be accurate and interesting in a graphic novel format. It does a good summary of the time lines and events of Lincoln’s presidency.
Content that is helpful to deepen understanding: 1. Who’s Who – this section gives a brief description of the part the following people played in this time of history: Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S, Grant, George B. McClellan, and William T. Sherman. 2. America 1861 – these pages give a map of the Union states and how they were divided between the North and the Southern Confederacy states. 3. A Divided Nation – these pages discuss the topics of: Slaves States and Free States, The Political Parties, Government For the People, Frontier Life, and A Quiet and Melancholy Man. 4. Aftermath – these pages discuss the events following the assassination of President Lincoln.
Something I learned about President Lincoln – he first suffered from “hypo” (depression) after the death of his first love, Anne Rutledge.
An interesting perspective – “I used to be a “slave,” but I made myself free, and I am now so free that they let me practice law.” What Abraham is referring to is his years of service and work for his father. As a teenager, Abraham was hired out to work and all the pay went back to his father.. He had no say in the matter.
Typically I love non-fiction graphic novels for people not interested enough, or have the attention span for, larger chapter book on the person or topic. This one was just o.k. for me though. I felt that the story line and graphics painted Lincoln in a darker light. Yes, I know he was a human like the rest of us that most definitely had a darker side; however, I do not feel this book showcased his positive qualities enough to overshadow the bad.
If you're wanting a quick read on who Abraham Lincoln was and the years he served during the Civil War, then this book is for you. Done in a graphic novel style theme, this book shows you the highlights of his life and times. I just can't get used to the illustrations in this series and the cover art on this book showcases that I think.
