The Courage to Rise: Using Movement, Mindfulness, and Healing Foods to Triumph over Trauma – A Practical Guide to Yoga, Meditation, and Recipes for Nervous System Relief

Rate this book
A prescriptive and transformative plan to use yoga to heal pain, anxiety, depression, and other manifestations of unresolved trauma, by an internationally acclaimed yoga teacher.

Whether or not we're consciously aware of it, no one is spared from trauma. And the damage can stem from a range of sources including severe emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, war, neglect, betrayal, abandonment during childhood, minor automobile accidents, invasive medical and dental procedures, and natural disasters such as earthquakes or fires. Whatever the case of your trauma, renowned yoga instructor Liz Arch is willing to bet that it has touched you or someone you love.

Following her own traumatic experience with domestic abuse, Liz became a highly visible spokesperson for the capacity of yoga to heal those who have suffered from various types of trauma. In The Courage to Rise, Liz shows that without productive ways to expunge trauma from our system, it can stay in us on a cellular level, coloring our daily lives and even causing us to subconsciously retraumatize ourselves. When we arm ourselves with the tools of movement, mindfulness, and good nutrition, we can become more grounded and more aware of those things that are happening within us, and where they stem from. We can then utilize productive methods to dig down into the root cause, rather than getting caught up in a vicious cycle of continued trauma and destruction.

This sensible guide for healing trauma naturally and overcoming its symptoms—including anxiety, panic, and depression—offers a triad approach to recovery by addressing the three areas where trauma lives:

1) The body. Liz shows readers how to move trauma out of the body—out of our tissues and out of our muscle memory—through a series of 14 signature Primal Yoga movement sequences.

2) The brain. To address the mental aspects of trauma, depression, and anxiety, she walks readers through a series of meditations and mindfulness practices.

3) The gut. She looks at mood-killing food culprits like caffeine, sugar, alcohol, and gluten; examines the best whole foods to stave off depression and anxiety; discusses the pros and cons of supplements for brain and gut health; and offers twenty-five delicious and nutritious recipes.

The Courage to Rise gives invaluable insight into understanding the nature of trauma and shares practical and effective tools readers can immediately implement to begin releasing trauma, strengthening their emotional resiliency, and transforming pain into their greatest power.

I technically didn’t finish this so I can’t really rate it yet. What I did read of it is very good, but it is so much to take in, and if you are suffering from past trauma like me, it really needs to be read at a slower pace so you can get the full benefit of everything in it. I will eventually just buy it because I ran out of time from checking it out from the library, despite getting an extension on my checkout time.

If you do deal with trauma and/or PTSD, I’d highly recommend this. There are movements you can use to help get through some of it, as well as recommendations on foods that can help as well. It may seem odd to have the food section, but I do believe food can harm or heal even as far as mental health, and she talks about that in here as well. She also mentions getting professional help if needed, and although she isn’t fond of pharmaceuticals, she also mentions that if you do need them to absolutely take them, so don’t think it’s a book that is against getting professional help. Check it out if you have a chance!

A very practical, holistic guide to overcoming trauma's effects on body, mind, and spirit. Though the book is over 300 pages long, it was a very quick read as ~150 pages are dedicated to instructional yoga diagrams or full-page recipes.

Good info, practical advice. Liz Arch discussed a lot of different "tools" that are beneficial to keep in your "toolbox" to help you manage anxiety, panic, depression and to be an overall happier, healthier person.

Before reviewing, I wanted to actually try the movements and breathing techniques. Would they really help with depression? Anxiety? Grief? They did. It's great to have new tools in my practice that I'll continue to use for grounding and entering a positive frame of mind.

I received this book as an advanced reader's copy and remember the old saying all hard work is 90% mental and this book proves that they were right. The art of Yoga and the benefits that come with it are remarkable and can really change lives for the better thanks to this book. Yoga has such an impact on your body physically but mentally it can revive your way of thinking and your way of thinking has a huge impact on your everyday life. The presentation approach Liz Arch used to convey the key facts and benefits was direct and easy to understand. A wonderful read that are giving 5 stars.
