Shark: Infested Waters

Rate this book
For Simon, the trip was supposed to be a once in a lifetime a journey to the Amazon River Basin, the land that he had dreamed about visiting since he was a child. His enthusiasm for the trip may be tempered by the poor conditions of the boat and their captain leading the tour, but most of the tourists think they can look the other way on it.

Except things go wrong quickly. After a horrific accident, Simon and the other tourists find themselves trapped on a tiny island in the middle of the river. It's the rainy season, and the river is rising. The island is surrounded by hungry bull sharks that won't let them swim away. And worst of all, the sharks might not be the only blood-thirsty killers among them.

It was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime. Instead, they'll be lucky if they make it out with their lives at all.

I forgot I wanted to read a bunch of books for Shark week!!

So I found this one on kindle unlimited right quick. It was decent enough for a short book. Meanwhile, me and mom watched Deep Blue Sea 3 which was decent enough as well. So, all I all, I feel like I at least got two things in for Shark week 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️

So this was shaping up to be a really good book until the ending — what shite! I honestly thoroughly enjoyed 99.8% of this book but that last few pages…? The story doesn’t have a conclusion…? Why??? What happened?? UGH!

Scary

It's a quick scary read. Well worth reading for sure. I do wish it was longer, but that could be because I was so wrapped up in the story!

Six tourists are going on a boat trip down the Amazon, for differing reasons. They have all chosen a cheap off season trip but were not expecting a boat that is falling apart, a drunk captain steering it and a storm brewing on the horizon. When the boat starts speeding along the water in the dark, the passengers decide that the captain has to be stopped but in the struggle the book is damaged and starting to sink, the survivors forced to swim for the nearest land. However their sanctuary turns out to be a small area of land in the middle of the river and with tides rising, they have to find a way to the mainland. The problem is, there are bull sharks in the river just waiting for the chance at a meal.

I always look forward to these 'boat trips go wrong' scenarios as there is so much potential to them. I love the setting of the Amazon river because it is the kind of place where you can believe anything can happen. New species of plants, insects, arachnids are always being found in the deepest, darkest parts of this environment so it is ideal for a horror setting. Bull sharks are a species known to be able to survive in fresh and sea water so they are the ideal choice for a sharks in the river plot. I love sharks, I'm fascinated by them and too scared of them to set foot in the sea, and I can't get enough of reading about them.

It is a creature feature book and the plot is quite typical of what you find in the genre. We have the group of people on their trip, the disaster striking, the danger awaiting them and how they are going to find a way out of the mess. It is a plot that has a lot of tension with the fear of the sharks and the realisation that by morning, their sanctuary will be gone and they will have to take their chances in the water if they can't come up with a plan. What they don't know is that one of them is a serial killer who came on the trip to get away from the crimes and quietly hide and plan their next move. In their twisted mind, if the others were to die, it would increase their chance of surviving so the survivors are going to have fear of this person as well as the sharks. It was an interesting twist to add in and made being on the island even more dangerous.

I liked our MC Simon. He had loved the idea of visiting the Amazon on a tour and was finally getting the chance to do it. He has knowledge of the area from reading countless books about the area and knows what kind of trouble they are in from the start. The one thing he didn't have was the common sense to refuse to get on the disaster of a boat with a drunk captain. Seriously, what were they thinking!!! I liked that it was Simon who was trying to use his brain to save them rather than just giving in. He comes up with several ideas to try rather than the last resort of swimming for the bank.

My one issue was that when Simon was executing the boat plan, I was struggling a little to actually understand the plan and what exactly he was doing. I just found it hard to get a picture of it in my head but that might just have been me on a bad night rather than an issue with the writing itself. I did enjoy the plot. It was of course a bit far fetched in places but I expect that in creature feature horror, and I don't mind it as long as the book entertains and this one certainly did, so I don't have any complaints. The book just gets straight into the disaster without padding and a ton of introduction. It keeps a good pace up throughout and the sharks are a constant menace which is what I wanted.

This is the second book I've read by the author, the other being Titanoboa which was also set in the Amazon, and I hope there are more to come.

Seems like a final for a creative writing class. Has no satisfying ending.

Simon's aunt buys him a once in a lifetime riverboat trip down the Amazon as a graduation present, she doesn't have a lot of money so it's during the rainy off-season. The boat turns out to be a rusty bucket, the captain's a drunk and one of the other passengers is a nasty piece of work. He decides to make the most of it, he might never get this chance again. Then the captain gets in a fight, the boat crashes and sinks and all the passengers are trapped on an island in the middle of the river...the island is getting smaller as the rain floods the Amazon and is surrounded by hungry bull sharks...and one of the survivors is more dangerous than they imagined...

Honestly...it's kind of terrible. The story is nuts, it's not overly well written in some places and it's like reading a straight to TV horror B movie. And yet I couldn't put it down 🙈🤣 Somehow I kind of loved it! 🤣

The plot seems similar

This was a good story although the plot seemed like the plot of a movie I saw time back. The big difference here is the attacking animals are sharks. The movie had a really big saltwater croc. Also the psycho killer was new. Still it was fast paced story that held my attention all the way to the end. I did have one problem, but it happened only a couple of times the author got the name of th psycho killer, Cory, mixed up with the main good guy, Simon. There were times when they changed names and that was confusing to say the least. All in all I did enjoy this book. If thrillers with sharks and psycho killers are your thing then check this one out.

Kill or be killed

Interesting twist to this story. I am not sure who the hell goes on an Amazon river cruise during rainy season or anytime for that matter. The story was fast paced and in my opinion could’ve been a better story if we had a decent ending. It left a lot of questions, whether they got out of the Amazon or got to get her at the end etc...

A short and fast paced thriller.
I also would compare that if you liked "alone Perfect Couple" By Ruth Ware, you would also enjoy this one.
My only critique is I wish we got a better ending, either one that kept us guessing or one that completely ties it up. It was just fine how it ended, not a full disappointment, but there were questions I was left with.
I was definitely in it for the rest of the book though. Very fast-paced with things continuously pushing the story forward.

Good short story!

Enjoyable short story about 5 people on a site seeing trip on the Amazon River. Unbeknownst to them, their Captain is a drunk. The boat is shipwrecked and a few of the survivors are trapped on a shrinking island surrounded by Bull 🦈 Sharks. Can anyone say “dinner”!

What a little gem!

What a weird and wonderful little book! I really enjoyed it, short enough and engaging enough to read in one sitting.
Random little twists, just when you think it couldn't get any worse - boom!
Some of the shark attack scenes were incredibly graphic, but some of the real action takes place on a form of land.
Highly recommend!

Fascinating story

6 tourists on a cheap Amazon River tour at the start of the rainy season fight to survive against sharks. Lots of action and adventure with the right amount of horror make this a fascinating story. Interesting characters as well.

Life & death on the Amazon River

Six people book a trip down the Amazon River but their trip of a lifetime quickly turns into a struggle to stay alive. Interesting story with the very aggressive bull sharks as the major predators.

I am all for short reads but end the book correctly. I feel just as the story was headed into what could have been another 50 pages it ends abruptly with no answers at all to what happens to the characters.

When a tourist group takes a shanty boat down the Amazon River, their lives turn into chaos and horror. I really liked this book, but I think the ending was rushed and left me with "what happens next?" questions. No Spoilers! I definitely recommend it to horror readers!

Good story, page-turner

Wish the ending was more developed. Stops suddenly, but everything leading up to it is solid storytelling. Action starts immediately, which I love.

The movie Anaconda came to mind when I was reading the part concerning the rough shape of the boat that the unsuspecting vacationers have booked for a week cruise through the Amazon on. Things start going from bad to worse when the drunken Captain strands the vacationers on a small piece of land that is shrinking quite quickly from the monsoon rains only to learn that the bull sharks are very hungry. Just when you think nothing else could go wrong, one of the vacationers is actually a murder on the run.

I got the same warm, excited feeling, reading this book, as I used to get watching B sci/fi and horror movies on a Saturday night. You know, starting off ,that this trip will not end well for some people, and you just hope it's the ones you dislike and that they meet their demise in an epic way, and yes, they do. Stupidity and panic play a big part. I really was delighted reading this.
