Artwork was beautiful and really cute (4 stars for that) but the story itself was underwhelming. I think the younger part of the age range would like this more.

I feel bad giving such a cute book only 2 stars, but I was expecting a true story of the little hippo who became a media sensation, and instead got a fantasy based only very loosely upon the real Fiona's story. The tiniest tots will be amused by the sweet baby exotic animals, but older readers may want a bit more background on the real Fiona.

This is neither here nor there, but the book depicts a pair of white tiger cubs at a major, accredited zoo. Legitimate zoos no longer breed white tigers, as they are highly inbred, riddled with health problems, and do not contribute to the conservation of tigers in the wild.

First sentence: On a cold winter's night, a baby hippo was born.

Premise/plot: This picture book is loosely based on a true story. It is the story of a premature hippo named Fiona who lives at the Cincinnati Zoo. The perspective is not from the zookeepers but from Fiona herself and other animals at the zoo. There is a LOT of dialogue. I would recommend Saving Fiona by Thane Maynard instead because it is more factual and realistic. It is also packed with photographs.

My thoughts: If you enjoy stories where animals at the zoo run free from their cages, where all animals are best good buddies, where animals talk to one another, then this is the book for you. Here is where I stand: I don't mind animal fantasy I don't. I really don't. Give me a picture book with talking animals, animals in clothes, animals going to school or having their tonsils out, I'm fine with it. It is clearly a story. But because Fiona is real and this is based--however loosely--on a true story, I'm bothered by it.

I don't think it's clear that Fiona is premature and underweight.

Quite a disappointment. This is a weird fantasy with strange illustrations and a silly storyline. Why would there be any need to make up something when the TRUE STORY is so good? Why make a book with odd illustrations (Fiona looks like a deranged Muppet Baby with false eyelashes) when there are literally tons of photos and other images of Fiona from the start? I don't understand this. I love Fiona and her true life story (which is already plenty inspirational on its own, I might add)--but please skip this one and read Saving Fiona by Thane Maynard instead.

My daughter and I were both bored with this one. Would have preferred more facts on the premature hippo.

I'm sorry, but WHY does Fiona the Hippo have absurdly long, emphasized eyelashes? It's creepy and weird.

A generous 3 stars from me. Fiona is absolutely a queen so I needed this book. The illustrations are cute, and the concept is cute (the other animals in the zoo want to meet Fiona), but the text itself is so incredibly lackluster. It has this repeated refrain that is, like, syntactically awkward. Another couple editing passes probably would have yielded something better.

They really should have gotten Kara Brown, formerly of Jezebel, to write the text, because she really has what it takes: https://jezebel.com/fiona-the-hippo-i...

This story is a narrative about the birth of a premature hippo at Cincinnati Zoo. This hippo was named Fiona, and she only weighed 23 pounds at birth, which is less than half of what she is supposed to weigh! It starts off with the excitement of all the other animals at the zoo. They are all very eager to meet the new baby hippo. The story goes on to tell all about Fiona’s struggles and triumphs growing up at the zoo with the help of adorable illustrations alongside the way. I loved the book and thought that it was absolutely adorable. It first caught my eye because of the cute hippo on the front cover, the colorfulness of it as well as the font is very appealing.
One element that is particularly effective is the rhythm of the text layout and the text itself that is between the pages. One page has smaller pictures with quite a bit of detailed text, then the next page has a larger, seemingly more detailed picture and a typically artistically presented, one word text. This helps to break up the story and draw people into reading the next page. The one design element, besides the beautiful illustrations, that I really noticed and appreciated was the use of the different styles of text. This serves to break up the story a little bit by drawing attention and relieving the longer sentences with fun fonts.

This creative-nonfiction version of the now-famous, prematurely-born Fiona the Hippo (Cincinnati Zoo) is a charmingly portrayed approach. It views the "little one"'s early struggles, undaunted spirit, and eventual ability to grow and thrive through the imagined eyes of fellow zoo animals. Before you declare these irresistible illustrations as overly humanized, take close looks at two other purely nonfiction picture books about Fiona's story: Saving Fiona: The Story of the World’s Most Famous Baby Hippo by Thane Maynard, and Hip, Hippo, Hooray for Fiona!: A Photographic Biography
by Jan Sherbin.
These three titles disprove the common warning in publishing that a topic shouldn't be "overdone". In this case, the three titles each offer distinctly different stories, shaped around the early months of little Fiona.
Reading, then sharing, these three titles with young audiences (and older ones) provides a perfect opportunity to 1) honor each book for its own distinct strengths and appeal, 2) compare the similarities and differences in points of view, 3) analyze narrative text types, and 4) consider ways to approach writing non-fiction events in various ways.

Fiona tells the story of the internet sensation from the Cincinnati Zoo and captures the audience's hearts by the vivid animal illustrations. I thought the excitement from the other animal's dialogue was very creative and reinforced how Fiona became a hit in real life. I thought the author did a great job of exploring the stages Fiona goes through with her parents and wanting to make friends. I think the challanges she faces is a great representation of all the changes young readers will face during school, life, friendships, etc. The phrase "I got this" was encouraging for children to hear. I think it's a great way to display motivation and determination that even though life throws obstacles at you, they can be overcome no matter what.

Such a cute picture book! The illustrations are really well done. As a child who loved the zoo, I would have adored reading this book with my parents. It’s a short, easy story. It could certainly be used in a zoo themed story time.

Summary:

-Do not read past this point if you would like to avoid spoilers-

This is the adorably depicted story of baby hippo Fiona and how the whole world watched her birth and strive for life.

Reading through some of the reviews from people makes me sad that this book isn’t getting as much love as it should!
As a Preemie mom (who had her preemie 8 months after Fiona was born) this book makes me smile. I just imagine my daughter when she learned to do those simple things just like every other baby had to. Learning to eat and walk. I always feel like she’s saying “I’ve got this” just like Fiona in the book.
For those who were expecting a biography type book about the real Fiona... you realize this is a board book meant for little kids right? It’s not going to be filled with just facts and photographs of Fiona. It’s gotta have a fun story aspect for the tiny readers.

Fiona the Hippo by Richard Cowdrey. PICTURE BOOK. Zonderkidz, 2018. $18. 9780310766391

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Fiona the baby hippo was born early and the zookeepers worked hard to help her survive. All of the animals in the zoo watch her grow, waiting for a time that they can play with her too.

Unfortunately this comes out at the same time as Thayne Maynard’s well-written nonfiction book about Fiona that uses photographs. The silly style of this one is fun, but it pales in comparison to the other.

Challenges: Book-A-Day in May 2021 (19/31); Reading Goal Posts/Stacking the Series - Priority Three/Tier Seven. I have had my eye on this children's book for some time and was happy to include it in this month's challenge to read and post a review for a book each day of May. The joyful and detailed illustrations by the author capture the highlights of Fiona's first weeks after being born prematurely at the Cincinnati Zoo on January 24, 2017. Fiona is a testament to life finding a way and the happiness that is brought when love and care are selflessly bestowed. A beautiful little series; I want to enjoy more. NOTE: National Hippo Day is annually celebrated on February 15.

Going back to pick up some older titles...

Fiona, a premature baby hippo born at the Cincinnati Zoo, was not expected to live long, but this spunky girl showed the zookeepers how wrong they were. She became a cult personality for the zoo as she grew and grew and grew. This is the first of a series of books about the local celebrity.

Cowdrey's artwork is as adorable as Fiona is. While anatomically correct, there is just something about the eyes of each animal that touches your heart. Also, he infuses Fiona with a great sense of humor.

A fun book that is sure to pull the heartstrings of animal lovers.

Recommended for PreSchool-grade 2.

Fiona the Hippo is one of the most popular animal attractions at the Cincinnati Zoo. This is a cute book with gorgeous illustrations that tells the story of Fiona's birth, her developmental milestones and her introduction to the public. While it's a sweet book that would be fun to share with young readers during story time, I wish the story could have been a more realistic portrayal of zoo life - the various other animals are peeking in the window at the baby hippo and they're all running around and playing together outside.

Such a cute read!

I live in Cincinnati and was able to see up close and personal Fiona's struggle. I didn't know they had books. I found these perusing my Kindle. I had to check them out. The story was really cute and the illustrations are gorgeous. I can't imagine how good they would look in an actual book and not just on the Kindle. Now I'm going to have to read the rest of them. Too cute!

Fiona the Hippo is like Cincinnati's Little Sebastian. They love her, there are murals of her, and there are books dedicated to her. I like this one less than I like the J non-fiction book about her because this one doesn't explain how dire her situation was. But it's cute and fun, so it's fine...I mean, it's literally a picture book, why am I critiquing it?

5/5 (physical book)

Fiona The Hippo by Richard Cowdrey makes my heart happy. This is such a cute story about the little hippo from the Cincinnati Zoo who won the hearts of millions. This book spins the story to show what the other animals thought about her, and it was so cute to see the adoration and celebration they had for her. I guess I am probably pretty biased as I LOVE hippos, but I would definitely recommend this book!
