Lorraine Freeman is running away. And what better place to do that than Sea Port, Middle of Nowhere. With a new job as the town librarian, she can start over. Again. But a small Southern town is not where she expects to meet a beautiful, bearded contractor with baggage of his own named Jonah Brown, who brings to the surface a desire Lorraine never knew existed: to see and be seen.
Inheritance is the second book in the Welcome to Sea Port series, a collection of novellas about a small town no one can find on a map, unexpected love, sizzling sex and the occasional baked good (or two or three).
Katrina is a seasoned spinster with an active imagination, a love of romcoms and a keenly critical nature. She's a college professor by day who writes romances by...weekend. Right now she also happens to be on summer vacation. She enjoys yogurt, sparkling water and her three cats, who don't appreciate her love.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh I'm so addicted to Katrina Jackson's brand of small town romances that have so much heart in such a straightforward way. I like the love/lust at first sight trope she does because it's just so much fun when the couple admits they want one another and just work towards it. Inheritance deals a lot with parental presence or lack of in one's life and I LOVED IT. Lorraine and Jonas are so easy to love and root for. Also, you get some Mary x Santos x Knox action!!!
Representation available: black heroine and black hero!!! Tropes: She's a librarian who's into being public and intimate lmao!!! Has complicated feelings about her mom. he's a carpenter and so in touch with his feelings!!! Is grieving his father's death. Also, he's just...........softe <3
This was such a cute novella! Lorraine is the new librarian in town and Jonah is the contractor who’s rebuilding it. Sparks fly and they’re both into public sex so what’s not to love? And yet, I do wish it had been further developed as there were such interesting threads, like generational grief, Jonah’s insistence on keeping things in his recently deceased father’s house the same, and Lorraine’s habit of running away similar to the mother who abandoned her.
I didn’t understand why a librarian would move to town for a new job when the actual library is completely closed and under construction for months. What was she actually doing for work?? Why did they have to completely gut the building and why wasn’t there an alternate location in the meantime? How can a small town afford to have its own library, much less undergo a massive renovation project? These were only a few of my idle questions—not enough to prevent my enjoyment but I could see it really bothering actual librarians.
Given how little time these two spent together before they both ran away from each other, I would have preferred more of an HFN ending. Did I believe they missed each other? Sure. Did I buy that they loved each other? Not really. They’ve barely dealt with anything and hot sex is not enough to make me believe they know their actual feelings, especially with Lorraine’s fear of commitment and deeply ingrained pattern of running away. But I’m sure they’ll be happy together regardless of my timeline issues.
Character notes: Lorraine is a Black librarian. Jonah is a Black contractor. This is set in Sea Port, a town so small, GPS refuses to recognize it.
CW: hero’s father died of a heart attack 7 months ago, grief, hero’s mother was killed by a drunk driver when he was 6, hero’s ex-girlfriend slaps him in the face when he goes to apologize, on-page reconciliation with mother who abandoned heroine as a child, diet culture, unprotected sex , alcohol, inebriation, ableist language, reference to man who donated wasteland for a garden in “honor” of his “barren wife”
I liked seeing another person take a chance on the small town in the middle of nowhere. Lorraine had a bit of culture shock when she arrived and realized how small the town was. Mary seemed to help, but when Lorriane was introduced to Mary’s men the shock came back. I love how they addressed it and went on.
The spark between Lorriane and Jonah was fun. I liked how they went with it until both freaked out. It was interesting to see how each one freaked out and why, also interesting was how they got past the freak out.
The ending had me laughing, loved the new houses on Perv Place.
I love finding new authors and they have really good books!! I’m loving this series so far! I’ll definitely be reading the rest of the this authors work
Kind of disappointed by this one - the book is more about Lorraine and Jonah figuring out their shit than it is about the romance. Add in kink that's not my thing and I'm meh on the whole thing. Still reading on in the series though, of course.
Content notes: semi-public sex, grief, mentions of parental death and abandonment
This book is super short, super sexy but in places it felt rushed/underedited. If you're the kind of person who cannot stand seeing typos in a book, then this may not be for you. If you can get past that and livelihood sexy times then you'll enjoy.
a quick, steamy, fun read! We get to see my faves from book 1: Mary, Knox and Santos as Mary shows Lorraine around. I love how it mentioned that the Mayor's tryna lure some doctor to the town (book 3 set up??) because the Mayor seems to be doing that with everyone, luring them from their big city life to Sea Port. Although I wonder if she expected them to bring such excitement lol
Lorraine and Jonah quickly fall into a steamy sexy relationship and let me just say these two know how to add some sexy fun to a casual coffee shop visit ;)
Even as this is a pretty fast read, we get alot of depth with Lorraine and Jonah. I felt that they were presented as complex people trying to sort out their individual baggage. Jonah's trying is still grieving over his father's death, which led to him running from his life in Atlanta, which included a girlfriend. I felt a bit iffy about him having just left his girlfriend without so much as a peep to go to Sea Port but everyone handles grief differently and I was glad that he did go back to make amends with her. Even though there was no discussion and official breakup, they'd both moved on but i appreciated that we got to see that on page apology.
Lorraine also deals with her issues where her mother is concerned, when she visits her. That heart to heart was needed.
Did i mention this book is steamy??? Because listen there's a scene at the playground that was bot hot and funny. Lorraine and Jonah likes a lil public sexy time and they're already getting it on at the new playground when lo and behold who's also there doing the same???? Yes, you guessed it, our fave triad. listen i almost screamed because icon i sweaaaar.
So read this. It's fun. It's sexy. Sea Port is seeing a looot of action lol
I loved getting to see Mary, Santos, and Knox from FROM SCRATCH, as well as meeting Lorraine and Jonah and seeing them get their HEA. A fun, quick read full of Steamy scenes, though heads up that exhibition is a Thing in this book.
Content Notes:
📚 grief, death of father as an adult (heart attack) before start of book, death of mother as a child (drunk driver fell asleep at the wheel & hit her) 📚 on page sex between thruple from FROM SCRATCH (mmf) 📚 mild panic attack at realization of How Small Sea Port actually is 📚 casual ableism 📚 masturbation (vibrator) - not explicit 📚 wine brought as a thank you kinda gift - heroine checks that wine is something they like/will drink 📚 alcohol consumption, inebriation 📚 some minor exhibition (thruple slyly having sex during “dinner party”) 📚 first kiss while inebriated - verbal consent between both parties 📚 on page sex - oral, anal, reference to piv, manual sex (handjob), fingering, mutual masturbation, no condom w/o discussion 📚 manual sex on front porch 📚 mention of fire/arson (MC wanting to burn town/county down in embarrassment) 📚 heroine avoids hero and when he sees her in a booth, he traps her to confront her 📚 hero whose father taught him to know and name his emotions 📚 explicit exhibition/public sex 📚 references to childhood neglect, mother who seduces wealthy men and only staying with them a few years 📚 mention of past violence in anger (punching) 📚 MC hadn’t officially broken things off before starting relationship in Sea Port 📚 old joke brought up about a barren spouse (garden put on worst plot of land in “honor” of barren wife) 📚 casual conversation between MCs and thruple while MCs have sex in a playground
It is nice to be back in Sea Port, and rest assured, Mary, Santos and Knox play a big part in this book, and bring a lot of the life and laughter. Nevertheless, this is Jonah and Lorraine's story. As with book 1 we've got a lot of insta-love and insta-healing going on--but these are novellas not novels and the angst is not the point so much as the HEA. I enjoyed it--Jackson does such a good job of conveying "happy" that it is convincing and a light-hearted fun read. If you haven't read book one, go get it. This one will feel more complete, but it is all explained more or less, so you could skip it. I hope there's a book 3, they are fun little afternoon breaks!
I loved the first one. This one I liked. Now I have to find a sweet potato cinnamon roll recipe. That sounds so good!
Only one complaint sort of spoiler Her issues with her mother seemed too conveniently wrapped up. Even if someone changes and apologizes damage like that isn't easily undone. Sometimes found family is the best family. But it is forgiven because I like my romance very much happily ever after. Also on a children's slide?! Hopefully they cleaned it well after
This one was nice and entertaining. First, i love me some librarian romance ! I liked the way the author was able to give depth to those 2 characters in such a few pages. Especially Jonah's. I really felt for him and how he dealt with his grief. Lorraine was interesting, even though her issues were a bit more predictable. I was not very much into their kink, and didn't like too much the 2 scenes were Mary, Santos and Knox got messy. Found it a bit unnecessary. But it was nice reading about those 3 going strong. All in all, a solid book.
Gosh I love this town. The question is does sea port make the freak or does the freaks make sea port?! I love how Katrina’s dirty little mind works. This is one hot and heavy series. Now, Jonah and Lorraine aren’t my favorite type of H and h but it was still a good story.
The new librarian and the town contractor get down and dirty (sometimes in public places). And then realize they need to figure themselves out if they want to be together for real.
