From the bestselling duo behind Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs comes the long-awaited “funny follow-up” (School Library Journal) to Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing, which shows us a hilarious new group of animals that shouldn’t, ever-ever-ever, dress like humans.Everyone knows that snakes and billy goats and walruses should definitely not wear clothing, but there are actually lots more animals that should definitely not wear clothing… Because a frog might jump out of it, Because a crab might tear it up, And because a penguin is already formally dressed! Judi and Ron Barrett, the team behind the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs series, remind us once again why animals are better off just the way they are.
Judi Barrett is an American author and art teacher best known for imaginative children’s picture books, most notably Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing. Raised in Brooklyn, she trained in advertising design before working as a freelance designer and later turning to education, teaching art and woodworking to young children while pursuing further studies in early childhood education and studio arts. She frequently collaborated with illustrator Ron Barrett, creating several popular titles together. Her whimsical storytelling, blending humor with inventive concepts, has made her books enduring favorites, some adapted for film, while she has continued teaching and writing.
In this sequel to Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing, here come more animals wearing hilariously impractical clothing. Adding to the humor are the looks of confusion and concern on the animals' faces. Large bold text, and illustrations with white backgrounds make this perfect for reading aloud or beginning readers.

The premise of this book is that animals wearing clothes is silly. And it is. The book explains why clothes don't work for a variety of different animals including a frog, a bear (it would be unbearable), and a penguin. This short text and simple illustrations make this a fun book to share with preschoolers and kindergartners. This book is cute on its own but it would also make a fun way to introduce a lesson on animals and their adaptations.
I wanted to love this one more as I'm a bit of a Meatballs fan. Adore the cross-hatch illustrations and clean snappy layout of this tongue-in-cheek look at why animals are not suited to wearing human garments. Large, bold text and fun alliteration will appeal to younger readers who enjoy seeing skunks in pleated skirts.
I love this one, and I'll revisit in about a year when my kid will better understand the pictures and the words. Speaking of words...there are very few...but they match the pictures perfectly. ie : An elk doesn't wear clothes because he would have too many choices - accompanied by a picture of an elk with a hat on each of his many antlers.
Another collection of animals wearing hilariously impractical clothing. Adding to the humor are the looks of confusion and concern on the animals' faces. Large bold text, and illustrations with white backgrounds make this perfect for reading aloud.
I think kids who like to laugh with their stories will enjoy this. There isn't really a story. It's simply pictures of animals with clothes on and reasons why that wouldn't work, like a spider getting it's shoes caught in the web and getting stuck sort of thing.
The artwork is cozy and does it's job. Everything hams it up. I have a hunch that my niece and nephew from 5 years ago or so would have loved this book
The illustrations are not nearly as charming as in the first one. This was fine, but Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing is SO WONDERFUL that it generally fell a little flat for me.
I like this book because it was about someone or some Animals that Should Not Wear clothes and there's fish or horse, or it might hamper a horse or a centipede or something like that; something with more legs would be overwhelmed with lots of socks.
The two books in this line are wonderful: Little kids laugh out loud to see and hear the words. Simple yet impactful. I'm happy to see more of these humorous juxtapositions.
