WHAT. THE. F. MIND-BLOWN AND THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN IN 198(or 1988) ?????? LIKE WAYYYY BEFORE INCEPTION AND THE MATRIX. Ok. I need to re-read the book sometime again cuz I still haven’t figured out if the main character is in reality or another dimension of K2. Like he said he’s in reality but hmmm I don’t rlly trust anyone in the book. And I haven’t figured out if figures in K2 are actually based off reality, cuz it said it is but then it kinda contradicts itself and idk if that’s part of the author’s intention. Anyway this book is like a nightmare that makes u wonder if ur living in the reality or is everything fabricated and we are all j crazy- ok I’m so bad at explaining stuff but this is so mind blowing!!!
And the concept of Klein bottle is so intriguing like-
The book Klein's Bottle, book written by a Japanese author Futari Okajima, published all the way back in 1989, is about a man becoming trapped in uncertainty over whether the world around him is real or artificially created. The title refers to a mathematical object called a “Klein bottle,” which has no clear inside or outside. This symbolizes the novel’s central idea, the boundary between reality and illusion becomes impossible to separate.
The novel becomes a psychological mystery because both the protagonist and the reader constantly try to figure out what is real, making the story more intresting with the readers also being involved. As every clue leads to confusion instead of getting closer to the truth, creating tension between the readers. Truly a thought-provoking science-mystery. Ultimately in the story, the protagonist loses certanty on if the world he is living is real or not, forcing him to cut his wrist to see if he its going to be game over or result in true death.
Sicence fiction is truly fasinating because I'm really surprised that these kind of thoughts existed in the 80's, as it discusses the issue on how technology can manipulate human perception, a question way a head of its time. Very intresting book, would recommend reading if you like fiction, mystery, and thought-provoking books.
A 1980s Japanese detective fiction about virtuality reality: the virtual reality game in the machine and the reality mixed together to an extent that we still do not know where they were towards the very end of the story. I kept asking myself “what’s next” while reading. A very special reading experience, highly recommended!
The '89 is a bit too far ahead of its time in terms of techno-fantasy, I think, and the open ending at the end is fantastic.
It is only after reading Douban that I realized that the Chinese version of the "commentary" was not written by the original author, so it is another Klein bottle.
Good retro Japanese sci-fi. The twists are all super obvious but done in a really fun way and the ending is pretty great. I like the use of Klein bottle as a metaphor for not being able to tell reality from illusion.
