Under a Storm-Swept Sky

Rate this book
"Beautifully evocative and romantic." - NYT bestselling author, Monica McCarty

An eighty-mile trek across the rugged, stunning beauty of Scotland’s Isle of Skye isn't something I imagined myself doing. Ever. This isn't a trail for beginners. And I'm not a hiker.

But I have to finish it, even if it kills me. I have no choice.

With the ever-changing weather and relentless terrain, I’m in over my head.

Rory Sutherland, my guide on this adventure, is not happy. We clash with every mile, but we recognize a shared pain. Not only is the journey a struggle, but the tension between us is taut with unsaid words. And hope.

He’s broken. I’m damaged. Together, we’re about to make the perfect storm.

I have a fascination for all things Scottish (including, but not limited to, men in kilts), as well as a love of travel, both of which have influenced all my writing to date. My first novel is a time travel called INTO THE SCOTTISH MIST, the earliest drafts of which were inspired by a road trip in Scotland; my second, A STAR TO STEER HER BY, which has a Scottish hero, is loosely based on my college semester at sea aboard a schooner; and my newest book, UNDER A STORM-SWEPT SKY, is set on the Isle of Skye, and was inspired by my own long-distance hikes in Scotland. I’m a native New Yorker, living on Long Island and working in the publishing industry, and I’m always looking ahead to my next trip. You can find me online at https://www.bethannemiller.com

“Sometimes just one person can truly make a difference in someone’s life.”

“She had made my heart beat again, and she had the power to destroy it.”

“Let me take away some of your pain, just for a little while. And you can take away some of mine.”

“She’d made me feel again, made me think that I was worthy of some happiness.”

“He’d been my nemesis, my helper, my friend, my lover. We’d shared laughter, tears, and the kind of passion I’d only ever read about.”

Under a Storm-Swept Sky traz uma história bem escrita, encantadora, emocionante e linda.

KITTY KATS CRAZY ABOUT BOOKS

UNDER A STORM SWEPT SKY: Is a full length romance novel by NEW TO ME AUTHOR ‘Beth Anne Miller’ Spoken in ‘Dual Perspectives’ In this we meet tour guide 'Rory' & novice hiker 'Amelia'

For one whole week Amelia will be taking on the Isle of Skye, a novice hiker with practically zilch hiking experience, doing this hike wasn't even on her radar, she hated hiking, it was never really planned that she would do it, but things changed dramatically in the blink of an eye and she ended up doing this walk for her best friend Carrie who was the one that really wanted to partake in this hike.

Carrie's my best friend, the sister I never had. She's the hiker, I'm the beach girl. This was supposed to be her dream trip-her college graduation gift from her parents, and I as supposed to meet her after for a week of sightseeing in Scotland.

Straight away Rory and Amelia rubbed each other up the wrong way, being honest Rory was kind of a twat, not knowing Amelia's back story he just assumed with the amount of pictures she was taking was a popularity quest on her social media accounts.

She's been taking the damn pictures for her friend, while all this time I thought she was just another social media addict obsessed with how many likes she got on Instagram

Rory was a seasoned guide, he had plenty of treks under his belt, but there were other reasons why he was doing it. He felt it was his penance.

Amelia couldn't help but notice how gorgeous he was even though he was the bane of her existence since the very beginning. But when she twists her knee and it looks like she may have to stop half way, Rory promises her that he'll get her to the finish line.

What occurs when it's just the two of them left alone on the trail is where all those feels came at me, you get a deeper understanding of Rory, you see at what point in his life changed him irrevocably, you end up rooting for them, wishing for a HEA, their connection was beautiful, their chemistry was undeniable.

I'd come off such a book funk from a previous book that nothing was holding, or keeping my attention until I was tagged in a post recommending this book to me. So with a leap of faith I dived in and from that very very first page I was hooked, I can't even pin point what I loved the most about this, I guess the simplicity would be the main thing, nothing was over empathised, the storyline flowed effortlessly, I connected with the characters, the scenery described came alive, the hike itself took my breath away, and not being a hiker myself I wanted to get out there and go on a hike. I truly loved this. Highly recommend. Such a unique, outdoorsy kind of book.

Some books just call out for you to read them and whilst Under a Storm-swept Sky had my attention at the blurb—I love me a brooding Scot—it was what lay beneath that I quickly found myself lost in.

description Sometimes just one person can truly make a difference in someone’s life.

Set amongst the stunning scenery of the Isle of Skye, Beth Anne Miller has created a touching, emotional story of love, self-discovery and forgiveness between two characters each harbouring their own personal pain. And as US tourist, Amelia and trekking guide, Rory embark on their journey across the rugged terrain of the western Highlands, it’s one which both breaks, and warms, your heart.

description

Whilst on the surface Rory and Amelia are complete opposites, underneath is a different story. Their connection was so well played bringing plentiful verbal sparring, tension, fight, tenderness and intimacy, and I adored watching two broken, but oh-so-stubborn souls come together to make a whole.

description Make me forget, Amelia. Just for a little while.”

There’s no better reading experience than one where you feel part of the story and through her words Beth Anne Miller has created so many lovely moments that call to your senses. Under a Storm-swept Sky is a beautifully written, memorable romance with a wonderful cast of characters which brought both tears of sadness and joy all whilst reminding me how lucky I am to be able to get in my car and 8 hours later be breathing in the clean Scottish air and fighting off the midges. My first read by this author certainly won’t be my last.

description You can take a hundred shots that will show a brown speck against the sky, and they will never capture this moment the way your eyes can.”

The last couple of days I had the second reading slump of the year and believe me when I tell you that I really tried everything (except for rereading because I usually don't like that). Other genre, getting used to the idea of not reading anything for a few days and therefore not stressing myself, graphic novels, favourite genre etc. But it just didn't help. And then my eyes fell on this novel and I just tried again without expectations.

This book is about a hiking trip on the Isle of Skye and discovering new sides of the own personality. I immediately felt reminded of my own time in Scotland and I always googled the places and looket at pictures where the main characters were passing by. It was really great to follow the love story of Amelia and Rory and I am so grateful this story catapulted me out of my reading slump! THANK GOD! I read this book within 4-5 hours because I could not put it down.

This was exactly what I needed. I absolutely loved it but now I want to go back to Scotland!

4.5 - "I kind of wish we could go back to hating each other..." Stars!

My first read by Beth Anne Miller, can definitely be classed as a winner. Having traveled to Scotland a few times myself over the years I was interested to see how the author would handle the dialect, and the descriptions of the land itself.

What the hell was I doing here…

And I think that is part of the reason why I enjoyed the book so thoroughly, because she absolutely nailed it. Rory as a Scot came across as such, but the language wasn’t overplayed, like it sometimes can be, and the scenery, well it wasn’t a struggle to picture at all. What with having spent time touring the area myself, but the author really captured the essence of it all perfectly. I could smell the heather, feel the wind and touch the misty rains that come on with the blink of an eye, and that also disappear just as quickly leaving a rainbow smile behind to remember them by.

She made my heart beat again… she had the power to destroy it.

It takes a second for you to realize that on first meeting both Rory Sutherland; Guide for the Skye Trail, and Amelia Benson; unenthusiastic hiker taking a walk, are not feeling all warm and fuzzy about each other. Rory’s initial assumptions bring about incorrect judgements which when commented on raise a few hackles in our American who is wholly trekking outside of her comfort zone. It’s only as their journey progresses, and they start to learn things about the other that the realization that more than a healthy dislike is growing between them.

He’d been my nemesis, my helper, my friend, my lover… We’d shared laughter, tears and the kind of passion I’d only ever read about…

I loved the way the author revealed the inner-most workings of this couple as their hike progressed, and with each new day on the trail, another part of their pasts, their motivations, and their reasons for being where they were, were revealed. It made for an entertaining, emotive and engrossing read.

"It’s always the quiet ones who say the dirtiest things."

It might have been my first read, but it certainly won’t be my last book by this author. I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

3.5 STARS!
I couldn't bear the thought of being with her and then letting her go.
Lots to like about this one!

Amelia arrives in Scotland from New York to do an arduous, week-long trek across the Isle of Skye. Rory, one of the guides for her group, is a quiet and broody type who seems to take an instant dislike to her.

Sparks fly, tension ensues - all against the dramatic backdrop of the isolated Scottish countryside.

I admit that it was the setting that sold me on this one . . . and it was just as spectacular as I thought it would be.
"You should see Skye in the winter, with the Cuillins covered in a blanket of snow, sparkling in the sunlight. All around you is blue sky and white snow, and you breathe in that cold, clean air, and you just . . . feel alive."
The author did such a good job describing the majestic beauty of Skye - it was obvious that she'd done the hike in real life. In that respect, this was a 5 STAR read.

Amelia and Rory weren't my favorite types of characters though - they were both a bit whiny and wishy-washy - but I could definitely understand and accept this because of their ages. They were young and this is a new adult read after all. And on the plus side, their backstories were well done. Rory's especially tugged at my heartstrings.
He was so alone. And he was so casual about it, like he had no right to expect anything different.
I loved that I could feel their connection to each other.

Unfortunately, I thought the author overplayed her hand with the plot. A few times I cringed at how the author had her characters 'facing their fears' - a lot of that part of the story felt contrived with too many coincidences and situations that were 'set up' to mirror the past.
It was exactly like my nightmare.
Regardless, I still recommend this one. The author is new as far as I can tell, and she definitely has talent. I'll be watching for her work in the future.

4,5 🌟

I seem to be in the minority with this one, but I found Under a Storm-Swept Sky by Beth Anne Miller to be predictable and, frankly, boring.

I struggle a lot with contemporary romance, and books like this one are part of the reason why. It isn't that this was a bad book, but when the best part about the story is the setting, it is hard to get invested in the characters.

I found the female MC to be a bit TSTL. She gets in way over her head with a hike she is ill prepared for, and takes risks time and time again that put her safety and the safety of her companions in jeopardy. I got tired of her ruminating and photo-taking, and of her in general, if I'm being honest. The male MC had a hero complex a mile wide, and though I understood the motivation behind both of the characters, they just felt really superficially made to me.

Look, I'm not saying that the story is bad, just that it wasn't memorable, didn't have that spark that excites me. I'm picky when it comes to romance novels because I read so many of them. It takes a lot to impress me, and a slow-moving story (the second half went on forever) with a predictable plot just doesn't cut it.

After reading and loving A Star to Steer Her By last year, I kept placeholder in my calendar for this book for months. I had been greatly anticipating this story and y'all? It might have actually exceeded my expectations.

Under a Storm Swept Sky is riveting.

It's one of those books that appears to have found the perfect formula: action, adventure, romance, drama all doled out in doses that kept me glued to my Kindle, heart held in thrall, mind racing to know what happens next. I was pulled in immediately, and my attention never wavered from these fascinating, multi-faceted characters, or this brilliantly told story.

Rory and Amelia were so easy to love. Both damaged and wounded. Both working through their own healing processes and battling their own demons. I feel like "enemies to lovers" is a bit too strong of a label, but there was definitely no insta-anything here. Their burn is slow - but it felt steady to me, and when it finally paid off, it was so sensually scintillating, and satisfying - it was completely worth every way it tugged on and bruised my heart during the build-up.

This is my second book by this author, and she seems to have a gift for weaving her romance into a greater adventure. It's done in such a way that you literally feel like you're along for the ride. My heart raced at times, my body rigid with tension during some of the more intense scenes. I felt part of the story, fully invested, heart full of love for these characters and this brutally beautiful landscape (that yes, I now yearn to see for myself).

What can I say? I loved it. The adventure. The secondary characters (Tommy!). The emotional punches. The strong and brave heroine. The wounded but honorable hero. That slow steady burn that once flared to life basically incinerated my heart (and possibly left some scorch marks on my kindle). With Under a Storm Swept Sky, Ms. Miller has delivered a deft one-two punch of remarkable storytelling and beautiful writing. This is easily an early 2018 favorite for me and I cannot recommend it highly enough! ~ Shelly, 5 Stars

Fantastical! I don't know where to start. The first thing I have to say is this is a must read. I loved it.
Absolutely hands down, loved it. This book doesn't miss a beat. From the very first page you'll be sucked right in and you won't want to put in down after it ends.

Amelia, travel weary flying to Skye to take the place of her best friend who couldn't make the trip so she's doing it in her place. She's exhausted, inexperienced and hates hiking. So why would she sign up for an 80 mile hike across the Isle of Skye, the rugged terrain, the weather, the surly guide who for no reason took an immediate dislike to Amelia from the first moment. Tommy the other guide runs interference but Rory seems to get off on ticking off Amelia. They both have secrets they hold close and the emotions run high in places in the book. When they finally settle into some sort of truce, they open up a little to each other. When Amelia is injured and Rory makes the decision to help her finish the hike, he understands her need to do that. I'm not saying much more than that. This is really a story that has to be read. It's a fantastic read and the writing is stellar. Amelia is snarky and takes no guff from Rory, while carrying her own story. Rory is undeniably a grump, while soft and bears his own burdens. I loved all the characters in this story.... deserves far more than 5 stars.

First person, Dual-POV, HEA. Standalone.

This was such a SWEET love story. Bonus? It's set in Scotland, and I'm a sucker for a man with a Scottish brogue.

Rory and Amelia most definitely don't hit it off in the beginning. He's the tour guide leading her, along with a few other people, through the Isle of Sky trail. A daunting 7-day hike that Amelia is most definitely not equipped for. Hiking is her best friend's thing, not her's, but she's there in her place.

She'll finish, even if it kills her. (And it almost does.)

Throughout their incredible journey - I mean the descriptions of the locations alone, my god - Rory and Amelia start to open up to one another little by little, and they find out that they're both chasing away their individual demons.

It's a story set in the beauty of Scotland, about a man and a woman who help each other find their peace again.

It gave me all the warm-feelies and I couldn't stop reading. The author's note about her own personal trip through the Isle was beautiful, too.

'Til next time cuties ;)

When I read the description, I had to check it out. Hike 80 miles, on purpose you say? Oh but wait, hike through Scotland with a grumpy hot guide? Sold! I don’t hike or do nature at all. The thought of doing everything in this book makes me want to spork both my eyes out, twice. The way everything was described though, I felt I was right there in Scotland hiking beside everyone else. Rory and Amelia started off rocky but along the way, they had to work together and help each other out more ways than one. I enjoyed this one and I’ll for sure check out other books by the author. I like her writing.

Warning: Reading this book will have you wanting to fly to Scotland immediately. I loved this book! The descriptions had me on every trail, under every sky, and feeling everything - it was breathtaking. But what I loved most was the beautiful relationship between Rory and Amelia. Their journey is emotional and romantic, and ultimately left me with the biggest smile on my face. Sweet, heartbreaking, adventurous, and sexy, this book has it all.

Amelia is heartbroken and guilt-ridden. Her best friend Carrie is in a coma because of an accident she caused. She wasn't paying attention well enough and their car crashed. Carrie was looking forward to an eighty-mile hike on the Isle of Skye and to do something meaningful for her friend, Amelia is going in her place. She will take plenty of photos and makes sure she talks to Carrie on videos and through phone calls, so her friend can experience a little of what the trails are like when she wakes up. Amelia isn't a skilled hiker, which means she has quite a challenge ahead of her.

Amelia pushes all of Rory's buttons. He's angry because she's constantly using her phone and her level of experience scares him. They frequently clash, but while hiking together Rory discovers that first impressions can be wrong, Amelia isn't a superficial woman at all and she actually has a story to tell. Rory is fighting his own demons and Amelia understands him better than anyone he's ever met before. Can they overcome their differences and give each other a chance?

Under a Storm-Swept Sky is a beautiful romantic story. Rory and Amelia are both broken. They have been through a lot and that makes it difficult for them to communicate at first. There's plenty of tension between them and they repeatedly argue. When the journey progresses they find something with each other that they both desperately need though, comfort. They are soul mates and it's clear from the start that they belong together. They are from different continents, so I was curious to find out if they'd find a way to be with each other. I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough and loved every single chapter of their story.

Beth Anne Miller has written a gorgeous deep love story. I admired her thorough descriptions of the emotions of her main characters. She clearly understands what they're feeling and that makes it possible to get very close to Rory and Amelia. I love it when the surroundings intensify a connection, Beth Anne Miller combines their complex relationship with many stunning settings. She makes the Isle of Skye come to life in an amazing way, I could easily picture every single path and each fantastic view, which is something I absolutely loved. Under a Storm-Swept Sky is a mesmerizing moving story, a precious adventure combined with heartwarming true love.

I loved this story! It is a beautifully touching story with so many layers to it, like a tasty treat you just don’t want to put down till it is finished.

It is an amazing story of Amelia’s attempt to fulfil the dream of her close friend and complete the eighty mile trek across the Isle of Skye. She’s never attempted anything like this before, in fact she’s always refused to join in such activities. As the reasons for her doing it this time are revealed, her determination and resolve to complete it grow. Rory is initially so disparaging of her goals but ends up being her biggest supporter. Both are on their own journey to emotional healing because of personal painful events that have severely impacted on them, leaving them with heavy guilt pains.

The setting is superb and the carefully crafted descriptions bring them to life in the reader’s imagination. The interactions between all the characters are so well portrayed that it feels as though you are there, witnessing everything - the sights and smells, the wind and rain, the sunshine, the struggles and successes. It is a poignant story that I suspect will stay with me for years to come and it is certainly one which I intend re-reading in future. This is a keeper, one of the best books I’ve read and very worthy of the 5* rating I’m giving it IMHO. I’ll definitely be looking for more by this highly talented author in future!

I requested and was lucky enough to be given a copy of this novel, via NetGalley, with no obligation. This is my honest review of the book after choosing to read it.

I'll be honest with you, the cover is what first drew me in to Under a Storm-Swept Sky. But when I read the blurb, I thought it sounded like a great read. One about a land I'll likely never visit, but I could to escape into. It was that and more. The romance, the setting, the emotions all made it a fantastic book.

Amelia and Rory were amazing and, thanks to the dual narration, I got to spend time in both of the heads. It's so much easier to understand a character when I get their POV, so I always appreciate that when I'm reading. I was Team Amelia from the very start. I didn't know exactly what happened with her friend Carrie to push her to take this trip to the Isle of Skye — and take on the 80+ mile hike — but I knew it had to be something bad. She was carrying around a lot of guilt, yet she was so determined to do this for Carrie (and herself). Her drive and determination, especially when things got really tough, moved me and made me love her that much more. Grumpy guide Rory got the side-eye a bit in the early chapters because he was, well, grumpy. I suspected he was carrying some pretty heavy baggage himself, but it took awhile for that to be revealed. Despite their differences, I was all in for Amelia and Rory, even when it didn't look like there would be a way for them to be anything more than a fling.

While the romance was sweet (and even sexy at times), it was the character development that really made this one special for me. Don't get me wrong, I loved the romance. There was something special about Amelia and Rory. I was here for the swoons, but I ended up with a bunch of emotions too. They were both broken in their own way, but somehow this trip together found a way to put them back together. I had feels galore as I watched them navigate their past — and the rough terrain of the Isle of Skye. Tears were shed. But there were plenty of smiles, too. I also had unhealthy amounts of envy over the scenes depicted from the Isle of Skye. I didn't really need to Google it to picture it because Beth Anne's  descriptions THAT good. But, I still did because I had to see if the pictures I had in my head were accurate. (They were.) The Isle is absolutely magical. Amelia and Rory's story would've been wonderful no matter where it was set, but I can't deny the Isle of Skye was a gorgeous option.

Under a Storm-Swept Sky was the first of Beth Anne's books that I've read, but it certainly won't be the last. A Star to Steer Her By looks wonderful and I'm planning to read it as soon as I can make time. Then I'll stalk her social media as I impatiently wait for her next release.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

FAVORITE QUOTES

"You can take a hundred shots that will show a brown speck against the sky, and they will never capture this moment the way your eyes can."

"I don't think you're ridiculous. Determined, brave, and stubborn as hell, but not ridiculous. Never that."

Under A Storm-Swept Sky is a captivating story about a young woman who goes on a journey for her very best friend, even though it was a feat she never wanted to take on in the first place. I will admit it took me a few pages to really become interested in the story line, but once the angst kicked in I was hooked. I have laughed, and teared up while reading and I love that this author was able to pull those emotions out of me, showing their talent for writing! This is one of the best books I’ve read recently. If you like a slow burn that turns to fire between two characters that can’t really stand each other then PICK THIS BOOK. It is worth the read!

With a breathtaking setting and riveting romantic tension, I devoured Miller's latest. It's impossible not to get swept away with this heart-pounding read. UNDER A STAR-SWEPT SKY's broody Scottish hero, whirlwind travel romance, and gorgeous writing totally captivated me!

I bought it yesterday, and was too intrigued last night to start the other book I had planned. Then stayed up all night reading it. I couldn’t put it down. There was so much depth from both the MCs with the perfect amount of romance to balance it.

It was so refreshing to stumble upon this emotional and unique story. The blurb promised the book would be good and it didn't disappoint. What a lovely romance! So full of adventure, adorable and sometimes steamy romance. Set on paradisiac Scotland, we get to know Rory and Amelia. Both troubled by their own issues, the handsome grumpy guide and his stubborn amateur hiker discover along their journey that they have more in common that they can imagine. Amelia won't let anything stop her from finishing the trek and Rory is willing to help her achieve it.
A must-read for those who like unique romance! I'm looking forward to more Beth Anne Miller books.
