Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

Another great book!
Lots of stuff happens, including an attempted invasion of body snatching Sequis from Mars that outs the Martian shapeshifter dude, and forces all the heroes into a crazy battle in space.

Allen the Alien is one of my favorite things about this series, and he plays a pretty big role in this collection. I'm especially interested to see where the storyline with Allen and Mark's dad goes!
description

The Immortal gets a pleasant surprise, Mark and Co. battle Kate's brother and some time travelers, and the drama with Eve and Amber comes to a head, as well.

description

This volume also sees the end of the story arc about D.A Sinclair and his Reanimen. Except, it's not really the end...
And, of course, there's lots of other stuff sandwiched between all the big stuff that makes this title well worth reading.

Highly recommended!

If anyone has noticed I've been on an Invincible kick. There is nothing deep or even mind-blowing about this comic. It's all been done before. But so what? Kirkman's take on the superhero story isn't original but it is fun. It is actually a lot of fun.

Volume 4 continues the story but with several interesting developments. Invincible faces the Reanimen and finds his old friend. An alien species, known as the Sequis, has taken over one of the Astronaut bodies and prepares for an invasion of Earth and it will take all the heroes to band together to face this threat.

But, large events aside, the biggest developments are with Invincible- from realizing that college and relationships will suffer from his line of work to dealing with his mother and new brother. On top of it all, Invincible will get a visit from a Viltrumite agent. The conversations reminded me much of Sinestro and his motives behind the Sinestro Corps (from Green Lantern).

All in all-a very fun read. This is a comic that keeps the story and the humor simple, but there are still plenty of twists awaiting. While this series will never be taken for anything more than a really fun and entertaining comic, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I know this since I am eagerly moving on to Volume 5.

Man Mark is really hitting his limit in life in terms of "trying" to be a normal guy.

Mark is flunking class. Life seems a bit unsure with his girlfriend and is heading in a negative direction. He clearly thinks of his father as he keeps reading his books researching ways to save him. Everything just seems to be crumbling down on Mark despite his best efforts to be a hero and safe people, and that's what makes this such a great volume. You can relate so much to Mark here.

On top of that the ending really gets going after some calm times with Mark we see Allan the alien finally make his move to try and help Mark in a unexpected way. The ending resulting in some team up action coming soon? Oh yeah baby.

Invincible was on a roll in this era, giving us daily life issues with superhero big fights and brutal deaths. Mark just trying to transition from school life to full adult is just so damn entertaining to watch.

A 4.5 out of 5.

Absolutely brilliant fun to read.

The whole journey of invincible starts a little slow and seems a bit empty but once you get to know the characters it becomes a really good read.

If you're not reading this you should start.

The saga continues, Invincible goes through much both physically and emotionally and reaches his breaking point with his patience as he realizes that he is being taken advantage of by a double dealing government agency, not unusual.

Introduction:

After reading the third volume of Robert Kirkman’s classic superhero series “Invincible,” I was geared up to read the fourth volume of “Invincible” and man was this easily one of the most emotionally charged volumes I had ever took the pleasure of reading from this series!

What is this story about?

In this volume, Mark Grayson, now known as the famous superhero Invincible, is trying to put the past behind him by shedding his image of being the son of a superhero gone rogue and he proceeds to protect the world from any threats (which basically includes alien invasions, reanimated corpses and super-villains bent on world domination). Unfortunately, Mark Grayson’s social life is slowly dwindling away as he keeps getting into arguments with his girlfriend Amber and is possibly still in love with Samantha Eve Wilkins (a.k.a Atom Eve).

Can Mark solve this romantic tension between him, Amber and Eve?

What I loved about this story:

Robert Kirkman’s writing: Wow! Robert Kirkman’s writing just continues to get better and more personal as the volumes go on! I loved the way that Robert Kirkman managed to combine both straight-up action and emotional content in this volume as not only was I enjoying the action scenes of Invincible fighting his enemies, but I was also sympathizing with Mark Grayson’s predicament with his love life. Now, normally I usually do not like reading about loving relationships crash and burn, but in this case, I will make an exception since the troublesome relationship between Amber and Mark was written extremely well and I was able to really understand about the problems that Mark and Amber were facing in their relationship due to Mark not being able to spend enough time with Amber because of his job as a superhero. I think that Robert Kirkman handled this delicate situation in a realistic and logical manner (something I rarely see some comics do) and it really made me relate strongly to Mark, Amber and Eve as I saw how this turbulent relationship is affecting all three of them. I also loved the chaotic action sequences that happened in this volume as Invincible is always fighting some kind of villain and it really adds more dimension to his super heroic activities.

Ryan Ottley’s artwork: Ryan Ottley’s artwork is as usual gorgeous to look at as the action sequences are brilliantly drawn as you can see the bad guys’ teeth get knocked out of their mouths whenever they are being punched by the superheroes. I also loved the way that Ryan Ottley drew the facial expressions on each character’s face as they brilliantly reflect the emotions that the character goes through in each situation, such as Mark’s face having a sad look on his face whenever he was trying to decide about what to do about his relationship with Amber.

What made me feel uncomfortable about this story:

For anyone who does not like gory violence in any comic book, this volume does have some bloody violence (although not as graphic as the previous three volumes). There are many scenes where characters are punched and blood comes out of their mouths and that might disturb some readers who do not like gore.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, “Invincible: Ultimate Collection Volume Four” is a brilliant volume that really explores the relationship problems of Invincible and I cannot wait to see how Invincible’s social life will improve or self-destruct in future volumes depending on what other villains face him!

There are so many plot threads that run in and out of these volumes, but the evil scientist who has created the Reanimen and the Mars invasion get some significant storylines. But the fact that Mark is half- Viltrumite is always an issue, so the Viltrum Empire is an underlying concern especially when they send Anissa, a woman soldier to scare Mark and give him a warning. Allen the Alien also gets mixed up with the Viltrumites, letting himself be captured so he can meet Omni-Man who is in jail awaiting execution. Those are significant storylines, but that's never enough, as Mark has some additional curve balls thrown at him. His mother has agreed to raise his half-brother Oliver who is growing quickly and his romance with Amber is floundering. Mark is never there with her since he's always on some mission that Cecil, who leads the shadowy government agency, is always sending Invincible off to. Their relationship ends realistically, with Eve waiting on the sidelines.

Now I am far enough in the series to make some observations- Kirkman makes several uncomfortable jokes about being gay and is pretty damn sexist at times. The storylines can be hard to follow, as there is no transition between scenes and location, just bam, you're somewhere new (The Walking Dead did this a lot too). There are Easter eggs and connections to other Image publications such as Brit or Savage Dragon showing up unexpectedly is some group scenes. At times there is a lack of consistency between panels- Allen was a completely different color at one time and sometimes his head is drawn at different ratios, and at one point Mark was inexplicitly the same color as Oliver. While I am still very much a fan of this series, I can't completely fan-girl over it, due to some problematic issues.

This volume is pretty good, but it lays a lot of seeds for things to come later. Oliver, Mark's half brother continues to learn about life on Earth. Mark gets closer to Atom Eve, the redhead he had feelings for since issue #1. Anissa, a Viltrumite warrior, meets Mark to give him a warning and again demonstrate how powerfully outclassed he is against his own people.

What can I say, this is easily in my top 5 of current comic series. It is just so well written and relatable. Even though it sure felt like a transitory arc (I know that seems odd for a years worth of stories), I thoroughly enjoyed it and am eager to go buy volume 5 pronto.

While losing a little bit of steam from the last volume, Invincible Ultimate Collection vol 4 was still a fantastically fun read.

Ultimate Collection vol 3 was SO good and set the bar quite high, and while this didn’t quite reach the bar, this volume is nothing to turn against. While the events in this volume aren’t as fast-paced as the last, we do get more of those quieter, character-building moments here, and Kirkman continues to establish and tease plots and threads to come.

Unfortunately, some of these quieter moments I didn’t feel as invested in, and some of the character moments here didn’t always work for me in this volume, the big one being the love triangle between Mark, Amber, and Eve. You could tell right away that Kirkman wanted Mark and Eve to be together, but felt like we had to see Mark with other people first. So enter in Amber.

While it took a little bit to really feel this relationship, I really did enjoy the two of them together, and I liked the idea of some of the struggles they could face together with Mark being a superhero and Amber being a regular girl. It had the idea that we could get some Peter Parker/Gwen Stacy vibes, and I was digging it. I feel like as soon as we started to see some of these problems though, things became to convenient. Once Mark and Amber start having problems, Mark conveniently learns how Eve really feels about him, and he conveniently starts to have feelings for her again. And during all of this Amber conveniently meets a new guys she starts studying with and starts having feelings for, and this is when the relationship conveniently comes to a mutual end. There wasn’t a whole lot of stakes or struggle to any of this, and in the end made Mark and Amber’s relationship feel kind of pointless. I also didn’t like that Mark technically cheats on Amber when he kisses Eve and doesn’t tell her, and even gets upset when he thinks Amber is cheating on him. And I know I sound like an old man complaining about the romance drama of this volume, and I get that in the end they’re just kids, and none of these relationships are really that serious, but I just felt like this whole subplot could have been more developed and better thought out.

All this said, though, there were some really fun parts to this volume. While Mark and his love life didn’t grab me, the development of the rest of the supporting cast continues to grow and be thoroughly enjoyable. I love seeing Immortal and Dupli-Kate’s relationship go to unexpected levels, and I like where Robot and Monster Girl’s relationship is heading as well. Shapesmith is “shaping” into a really fun character, and I’m curious to see where they go with him after the Sequid story. Allen the Alien is back and physically better than ever, and I’m REALLY curious to see where things go when he crosses with Nolan. Rex-plode had a real moment to shine against the Lizard League in an utterly shocking showdown that nearly stole the show from the Sequid skirmish up in space. Those couple issues were some of the most entertaining in the series yet!

While the main storyline didn’t always grab me, the art never disappoints in this series. Ryan Ottley continues to get better and more detailed with his art which just continues to give us more jaw-dropping moments that really elevate this story more than I’m ever prepared for.

Invincible consistently remains a thoroughly enjoyable series, more fun than most I’ve read in quite some time. While this volume didn’t hold me as strongly as the last, it far from disappointed. It keeps me on my toes and immediately has me jumping into the next book to continue this incredible ride.

A juggler juggling three objects for ten minutes is impressive. A juggler juggling ten chainsaws for ten minutes is even moreso. But while a juggler juggling thierty-two angry narwhals for three straight days is impressive in concept, you might find yourself bored after a while, and have the desire to watch something different.

There are many angry narwhals in the fourth Invincible Ultimate Collection.

"My Favorite Martian" is the weaker of the two portions. There's an alien invasion, an attack by an unimpressive, previously unheard of villain group that somewhat restructures and give plots for the minor characters, and yet more setup for future events. It's clear from this collection that Kirkman is at his best when focusing on a single story element or two, rather than trying to follow several characters at once. I'd read his Batman, but I wouldn't read his Justice League, and I certainly wouldn't read his Legion Of Superheroes. I just didn't care about any of the C and D level plots, and found myself scanning over the walls of dialog, instead of actually reading them. Ottley's fantastic art saves this from being a two star portion of the five star series.

***

"Out Of This World" is a little better, and a little more focused, but it's still zinging back and forth between storylines without hitting the character or plot beats as well as the first three Ultimate Collections. Whereas each of those volumes felt like they were telling a story where other events were being prepared for in the background, this volume feels like a series of events leading to something cool in the future, but not interesting enough to hold attention on their own.

I read the issues of this series when they came out and issue 60 (which I believe is in the next volume) was where I remember my interesting waning a bit, and I'm sad to see it is happening a little earlier than I anticipated. Still, even at its worst, this is still one of the overall best series in superhero comics. Its bad is still ten times better than DC or Marvel comics's average, and I say that as someone who still loves Marvel and DC comics. And it's waaaaay better than early Image superhero comics....which is going to come into play in this series, in the near future.

I recommend it for people who know that even the best superhero comics are rarely flawless, people who wish Martian Manhunter was a bit more nebbish, X-Men fans who love the Sh'iar sh'it, and people who enjoy poring through superhero mythos and trying to figure out what trope is looming on the horizon.

vol 4 DONE! I believe this officially marks the end of season 2, and begins with season 3. this one might be my favorite volume so far. again, nothing new so far.. but its a good recap. i didnt realize how good they rewrote the comics of the actual show, and i cant believe some people actually prefer the way the comics were written. im def think the show has done a much better job, story wise. anissa finally has been introduced... and well.. i cant say im too happy about that. amber and mark broke up, which is kind of sad considering i think they have a much better chemistry together in comparison to atom eve. speaking of atom eve, why is she lowkey a BOPPP here?? like damn, homegirl plotting on ruining an entire relationship just cuz she wanna tap that viltrumeat. anyways, i think i like her portrayal way more in the show. overall, NOT BAD, NOT BAD. almost done catching up with the show, then ill be able to properly review the comics without any bias. YAS!

Kirkman's Invincible is quickly moving toward the very, very tippity-top of my list of superhero books. This has consistently been some of the best superhero work I've ever read. Kirkman is able to use the added freedom of Image to both provide his take on every super-hero trope ever (only done better than just about anyone's ever done them) but to satirize the often comparatively inept story elements by lesser talents working for the big two. Often Kirkman is deftly switching from satire to homage to new-twist-on-classic-trope in the same issue. Sometimes simultaneously satirizing, twisting and providing an homage to the same trope all at once. It's absolutely BRILLIANT.

For a person who has watched the Amazon Prime series, reading the comic version after the fact is a treat. There's so much that wasn't left on the page. The downside is I'm too tuned in to the voices of the screen actors. I'm starting the graphic series with Volume 4 of the Ultimate Collection because there's such a great demand for the preceding editions at my public library. The artwork is decadent, and the splash pages and how they came to be at the end of the Volume add weight to the process of developing the comic.

Another great entry in the series as Mark Grayson/Invincible, continues to become Earth's greatest hero while also dealing with a new baby brother and his villainous father, Omni-Man, having a change of heart. Robert Kirkman keeps the twists coming as Grayson deals with his ever complicated life while trying to do the right thing. The story is matched by Ryan Ottley's gorgeous art, nicely cartoony despite some pretty brutal superhero fights. Overall, another great example in one of the best superhero series in recent years.

Better. Possibly because more storylines and characters were already started. But also they handled the Amber relationship better. And Alan the Alien was really good in this one. And the William storyline moved along some. Just in general the writing was better and a bit less predictable. Unfortunately this is the last of the 4 volumes I own, so I guess I'll have to see if they are available from the library.

There are other being that Mark has to fight. Mark handle things by talking to them. He figured out much earlier that fighting is not the only solution.

Ceci is the government agency head who has been collecting zombie Mark from other dimension to be used against him.

Yes. there are being from other dimension too.

Mark Grayson story continue but more fighting in space. Mark is fighting along side his love and partner Eve.

I'm absolutely hooked.

It's like Kirkman copied the very best sagas of Marvel and DC and... put all together in one universe, with a superhero with an awesome family, in a good and bad way.

Fucking awesome.

I was not quite interested in this volume, as I read the comics after watching Season 1. So, some of the events were already spoiled by the TV series.

I think the TV adaptation was successful in integrating parts of the future arcs (Reinmenm, Mars, Titan, etc.) into the first arc.

4.5 rounded down cuz they do love the R word. But these just keeps getting wilder. I love that even with how many plot points there are it never gets confusing or meddled. Did take me foreverrrrrrr to read cuz I don’t think I want to read about superheroes and then when I pick it up I can’t stop
