Hiromu Arakawa (author: 荒川弘) is a Japanese manga artist, best known for Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師 Hagane no renkinjutsushi). Her real name is Hiromi Arakawa
Arakawa was born and raised on a dairy farm in Hokkaidō. She thought of being a manga artist since she was little. After graduating high school, she took oil painting classes while working on her family's farm. During that time, she also created dōjinshi manga with her friends and drew yonkoma for a magazine. After eight years she moved to Tōkyō and started out as assistant writer for Hiroyuki Etō. Her debut as manga artist is in 1999 with STRAY DOG. In 2001 she started working on her famous and award winning series Fullmetal Alchemist, that soon gets a successful anime adaptation. Other works include Silver Spoon (銀の匙 Silver Spoon, Gin no saji Silver Spoon).
Wonderful art retrospective of this important manga series! I have a friend who is really into this - so I bought him this book for his birthday. I really like it when you become immersed in a fantasy world; I think it is a great way to just tame a 'reality vacation' and enjoy yourself. This is the type of world I am talking about; very interesting characters that seem to jump out at you!
Arakawa is a fine artist, but I didn't read Fullmetal Alchemist for the art. This is a nice way to have one last visit with the characters though, having finished reading the whole series this week.
The cover art, frontispieces, and various promotional images from the manga, novels, audio dramatizations, and video games are collected in a nice full-color book. Arakawa also takes a couple tiny opportunities to draw a handful of characters from other manga like Soul Eater, Blast of Tempest and the works of Osamu Tezuka.
A fantastic book that collects all of the FMA-related art Hiromu Arakawa made, from the manga to the dvd covers, various tie-in games, postcards, etc. I was blown away when I realized she actually paints all of the color images <3
This is a wonderful book that includes all the art Arakawa did for FMA from 2001-2010 (Has it really been so long since the series ended?!), so basically it has everything from the previous three art books combined into one glorious art book!
I really enjoyed looking at all the artwork again--there were a couple pieces I wasn't familiar but overall I've looked at FMA so much I remembered the majority. 8D I also enjoyed the interview at the end that went over her process for creating pieces for a manga. I wish it had included her thoughts from the previous art books on each individual piece as well but I guess that might have made it much larger than it already was....
As I was looking through the book it occurred to me that I've been a fan of this series for years and new things are still being created for it; I think that's pretty cool and I hope other series I'm a fan of manage such longevity! Arakawa really did an amazing thing with this series. ^^
Fullmetal Alchemist is my favorite anime of all time (the original (however strange it may feel to call it “the original” considering Brotherhood is based off the manga), but Brotherhood is a close second, so don’t come for me). After obtaining the entire Fullmetal Alchemist: Fullmetal edition of the manga, I knew I needed the complete art too.
The art displayed in this book is vivid, quirky, dark, and somehow relatable in a world full of alchemy - all the things that you’d expect from Fullmetal Alchemist. You’ll find art from magazine covers, the graphic novels, special edition inserts, calendars, post cards, and more over the years. While I was hoping for a little bit more information on some of these iconic images - I was not disappointed with a single image. Not. One.
My heart swelled as I gushed over each flip of the pages - remembering important moments from the manga/anime and admiring every illustration and the work it took to create it. I appreciated the little quotes thrown in and I’m grateful to have this piece in my Fullmetal Alchemist collection.
I absolutely recommend - especially to those who loved the manga and anime.
I can't not give this 5 stars. This is the anime that hooked me, this is the manga that expanded my taste for it, this is what made me want to draw, learn more about Japan... It's special, alright? The paper is high quality, as is the printing. I enjoyed the short interview with Arakawa and the tutorial of her drawing process. I do wish she had done some comments on some, if not all, of the pictures, though the only artist I have seen do this is Arina Tanamura. I also found out just how much I am missing to complete my collection, as there are 3 "perfect guidebooks" published here in America as "profiles" plus a character profile book and 3 "art of". I was semi disappointed that there was no art from the anime in here, but since Arakawa did not do the art for that, I understand why. If you like FMA, this is a must have!
•The illustrations are beautiful, contains all the drawings produced for manga covers, magazines and postcards, many illustrations you may not have seen before:0 (with their respective dates and titles) •As well as models of the characters, an interview with the author and an explanation with images and a list of materials that use to create your illustrations 😄 •Contains a lot of things so buy it!
I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. While looking through the pages of this book it took me back to all the hours I sent wanting both Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmental Alchemist Brotherhood. While telling the same story going about it a different way. The art took me through several emotions and I just over all enjoyed the art work. I was please to see this collection.
Wouldn't call this a book, but something that could sit on a coffee table and be referenced from time to time. 5 stars for the presentation.
Still, was nice to see Arakawa's growth over time represented in a single entity. There is a nice interview at the end to see an inside look at her process. Worthwhile to pick up for any Fullmetal fan.
If you're a fan of Fullmetal Alchemist or Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood then this book may be for you. Contained within its pages are some never-seen-before artworks by Ms. Hiromu including one of an adult Ed and Al.
This book is beautiful and full of so much incredible art (a lot of it I haven't seen before). It's making me want to re-read the manga so that might happen sometime soon, it's been a while and I miss these characters!
There’s so much wonderful and crisp artwork, along with the last several pages being of a discussion and interview with Arakawa-sensei. This is an absolute must-have item if you’re a fan of Fullmetal.
This is a great Artbook for any FMA fan! Even though it has practically no text it beautiful displays the illustrations of the Author chronoligically over the years! The inbetween sites between the years also have an immaculate design and I had a great time going through the pages!
While I do wish there were artist comments on the illustrations, there were over 300 images in this, so I'll cut Arakawa some slack. This whole thing is, regardless, GIANT AND BEAUTIFUL
