THE RISE OF THE GRAND ADMIRAL CONTINUES! Mitt’hraw’nuruodo, better known as Lieutenant Thrawn of the Galactic Empire, has graduated the Imperial Academy with the highest marks possible, as well as been assigned his own personal assistant, Ensign Eli Vanto, but that doesn’t mean that everyone in the Imperial army wants him to succeed. Tensions run high in the ranks of the Empire as Thrawn continues to defeat new enemies.
The second part wasn't quite as good as the first. Strange little jumps in time in the narrative make it a little difficult to read, or maybe I wasn't paying enough attention. In any case, I'm curious to see how it all develops.
Thrawn has his first placement in the Imperial military. How will he deal with superior officers of inferior intelligence as well as acceptance of the speciesist Imperial military.
A good adaptation of the book but I think it leaves out too including the capture or I would have given this the full 5 stars.
There are some great page layouts in this issue, which is not rare for a Star Wars comic. I'm enjoying Eli Vanto much more than Thrawn himself, but I am intrigued to find out what Thrawn's long game is.
Fantastic second issue, Thrawn's tactical genius begins to shine through in the story and Vanto is an intriguing character. Really impressed in how well they've captured the novel's story in comic form, it doesn't feel neglected in any area.
Best of Thrawn book trilogy, continues in comic book form.
5 out 5 star rating.
The comic team really captured "the voice" of Thrawn that mirrors the book. This extremely cunning character, that is not 2 steps ahead of his enemy... but more like 5 steps, and not only his enemies, but his allies and everything else in-between as well.
I love the delivery too, which he is not Jack Ryan/Luke Skywalker, this overly hyped, unstoppable force that always wins no matter what. Instead with Thrawn, you get scenarios that are believable and Thrawn still upholds a state of extreme mastery over nearly anything thrown at him.
Love Thrawn and these comics are amazing.
Honestly though, they read more like a graphic novel than simply a comic book. These are extremely dialog rich.
This comic continues to be a good adaptation. I love the art, and it is nice to have a better picture of what Night Swan and Eli Vanto look like. I just wish they were consistent with whether or not Thrawn has black pupils. On the cover he doesn't, and in some pictures he does but not in others. It is kind of distracting. They continue to do a good job of adapting the novel without loosing the characters or complexities of Thrawn's thought process. There isn't anything new if you've read the book, but I still find it fun and love it.
So far still a pretty good adaptation, though if I'm being honest I'm kinda over the art style that involves lines and dots on surfaces like you'd see in older comics. I'm not sure if this style has a name. I also noticed a typo; Vanto is referred to as "Ensign Vato." The chronology being mostly vague is also annoying, but then again I don't like worrying about whether an "X months later" caption aligns with the novel or not.
Thrawn earns his captaincy and his first court martial during this tale of piracy and political intrigue. Eli Valo moves from passive acceptance of his role as Thrawn's protege to actively choosing to support the Chriss officer against the Core World elites hostility.
This gem of a comic has you rooting for Imperial efficiency and success.
Star Wars: Thrawn (by Jody Houser, illustrated by Luke Ross)
If you love action, clever strategy, and Star Wars adventures, Thrawn is a graphic novel you don’t want to miss! This story follows a mysterious and brilliant alien named Thrawn as he rises through the ranks of the Empire. He’s smart, calm, and always one step ahead.
#2 - "They are antiques, remnants of The Clone Wars."
2 issues in and I am so hooked. Thrawn is such a fascinating and compelling character, perhaps one of the most in the Star Wars Universe. I had no idea. Can't wait to find out what happens! Or maybe I'll read the novel...
On my way to book 3! The only thing is that I don't know how much time has passed. At the end of the book, he was about to be promoted to Captain. I know he was in the Imperial Academy for about 3 months. I figure at LEAST a year passed since then.
4.5 Can I just say, as someone who has studied and attempted comic paneling formats for a year, this series is so far insane. I luv it. The paneling format on each page is brilliant.
Im really enjoying this adaptation though I do have to wonder when will we get Arihnda Pryce because I do remember some stuff of hers happening simultaneously with all the thrawn stuff. excited to start the next issue.
Having read the Thrawn novel this comic felt kinda pointless as it's just a simplified adaptation with some passable art. Just read the book, it's much better!
I love the character of Thrawn - Houser is doing a good job developing his intellect. I find reading this comic is almost like a mystery. I keep trying to figure out what Thrawn is thinking, what his plans are. So far he's outsmarted me.
