A Native American god drives an eighteen-wheeler around the southwestern U.S., fighting evil and cracking wise with his best friend, a coarse, beer-swilling Caucasian trucker who also happens to be a powerful shaman.

Connell has packed a lot of fun ideas into this: southwest Indian mythology, trucker culture, werebeasts, ghosts, mage fights and monster fights. It is entertaining, but I think I'd have appreciated it more if it were a little more serious and a little less Smokey and the Bandit. It didn't quite find the right mix of serious urban fantasy and zany road trip.

The illustration at first looked to me like something I'd see on a cereal box, but it grew on me.

A little scattered and tough to follow in some parts, but a solid story told fairly well. Flashes of brilliance, but not quite enough. The art is cartoonish but grows on you.

This review first appeared on scifiandscary.com. I was provided with the book by the publisher for review consideration
In my teens I read comics, lots of them. I devoured them alongside piles of SF, horror and crime novels. Looking back I think my reading time was split about 50/50 between comics and prose. My teens were three decades ago. That’s unfortunate in many, many ways, as my grey hairs and arthritic toes will attest. Another thing that age seems to have withered is my love of comics. I have read a few comics more recently, a bit of ‘The Walking Dead’ and the ‘Preacher’ and the ‘Battle Royale’ mangas (okay, clearly not THAT recently), but I don’t obsess about the artform like I used to. In fact some titles that were hotly recommended to me, ‘Saga’ and ‘Locke and Key’ spring to mind, I didn’t get on with at all.
So take all of that into consideration when you read this review. I’m probably not really a ‘comics guy’ anymore. Although I am going to try and read more and see if can rekindle that old flame. The long preamble you’ve just suffered is my way of saying that I’m not sure if I liked ‘Brother Nash’ or not. The important thing for anyone reading this to note is that as likely to be my fault as it is Bridgit Connell’s.

‘Brother Nash’ is vibrant, imaginative, inclusive and fun. It’s also a bit bewildering at times and I never felt like I really got to know the characters. There’s a lot that I felt I should like here, but somehow it never clicked with me.
This graphic novel collects the first three issues which make up one continuous story. Nash, the hero, is a Native American trucker with a shaman for a best friend and lycanthropic tendencies. Connell, who handles both writing and art duties, does a good job of pulling in Native American mythology. Both the hero and the villains are shape shifters and there are a host of great creatures on display. I especially liked the insect like bad guys. Throw in some car chases, a fair amount of violence and a robust rosta of characters and you have the makings of a good series. It’s all a bit too frenetic though, and I found myself lost at times, although that may just be because I’m out of practice reading this kind of thing.
The art is cartoonish and suits the bizarre events of the story. I preferred the pencilling (which is great) to the colours, which seemed to lack vibrancy at times. Having a single creator behind the volume definitely helps though, and the book has a feel all of its own. Whilst the story is fun, I never felt myself really connecting with the characters, although that may come in future issues.
This was an enjoyable re-introduction to comics for me. It’s fast, fun and funny, even if it did leave my old head spinning a bit at times.

I really liked the Native American aspect of the story, which is very rare to see in a graphic novel. Of course I enjoyed the story and artwork. Too bad there aren't more in the series

Fumetto senza gloria né infamia, cerca di essere divertente in certi momenti ma non ci riesce, un tentativo decisamente fallace di unire horror alle risate, specialmente cadendo in cliché e riempiendo tutto di scene inutili e ridondanti.

Native American folklore and traditions sure are exotic. I'm not enough of a fan of mystic arts to do research on them, but they sound legit as they are centered on nature, animal forms and spirits. Midway through, the story was a bit confusing for me, so I was barely kept track of things. The comic does have some things going for it, like the light-hearted tone, the expressive artwork, the fun characters and the idea that in the fight between good an evil, the former tends to win.

Nashoba 'Nash' is a truck driver who picks up a hitchhiker named Hernando. The latter was tasked with stealing the truck for the Corneja Gang, but Nash decides to help him. Nash is really an ancient who can see ghosts, commune with otherworldly beings and help wayward people like Hernando. Unfortunately, Hernando doesn't want to turn away from his clan and is ripped to shreds by Nash in his warewolf form. This is just the beginning of an adventure where Nash and his friends face one of the most powerful ancients who is working with the Corneja Gang to kidnap people.

This was different. It was weird, but in a good way. It's been described as American Gods meet Preacher, which is a good comparison. A trucker who is basically a demigod runs into other demigods, with shamans and humans caught in the middle. If you are a fan of the two series I mentioned, this is probably worth a read.

This was pretty good. I like the idea of this Ancient travelling the highways in a semi helping people. I love all the Native American lore in here and just the general strangeness of this story. It's good stuff. Check it out.

What a treat!
I found this in the reduced section for only 99p, and what a shame that is!
My luck, but otherwise not okay because this story has it all!
Zombie insects, ghost cows, gods, fatastic fights, an adorable doofus, urban twang.
What not to love!
