While I enjoyed parts of this story, it just wasn't my favorite and there was some content that made me quite skirmy. I loved the character of Sean in the first book, so parts of this book were very hard to get through because of the things he was going through. His redemption story arc was very sweet though! I wasn't really a fan of Charlotte and her storyline. I mean really, she basically goes from a super-tough-girl-who-doesn't-have-a-heart to a gentle, sweet, loving wife. I felt like there was some inbetween lacking there.

Also, while it wasn't necessarily innapropriate because there WERE husband and wife, there was quite a bit of talking\hinting at intimacy that made be very uncomfortable. I don't really need to know any of that . . .

All in all, not really my favorite book.

Second read.....oh, the dilemma of reading well-loved books from my teen years after I learned how to write. I've been avoiding them and just smile at them on my shelves. But I tend to not go to sleep with a new, good book, and with my insomnia and being sick, I needed something I knew so well I could put down....I still love the far-fetchedness of the cute meet and feeling as if I know all these people. I mean, my first boy is named Marshall after Rigg, the first Christian fiction novel I ever read. However, the plot is minimal, so really no worries there, especially with how Sean does a complete 180 flip with no stumble whatsoever at becoming the perfect man, Charlotte's salvation is basically the crux of the plot and it's only a waiting game. And as when I was a teen, Lori Wick makes me feel like a bad Christian for skimming all the pages of sermons. :P So, it's just a comfort book for watching two people fall in love really. So I'll give it 3 stars now (probably generosity made possible by nostalgia) and average it out to 4 :)

1st read remembrances: I love the "far-fetchedness" plot that worked. What a fun romance, a great hero wooing the reluctant woman. One of my favorites from high school. 5 stars

An unconventional marriage of convenience and adorable characters in a small-town setting... beautiful and sweet!

I absolutely loved Sean and Charlie, and seeing their relationship blossom was so lovely to read. Loved seeing the character growth of both of them and catching up with the rest of the family was an added delight. Will definitely be re-reading this!

At 17 Sean Donovan has finally worked up the courage to leave Santa Rosa. Bitter and angry at his father's continued absence, Sean is determined to set out on his own, leaving his family and his God behind.

For 2 years Sean finds odd jobs to earn money. He keeps moving in order to keep himself from thinking of his sisters Kaitlin and Marcail. When Sean meets up with Hartley he starts living a life of luxury that he decides he could get used to. But that doesn't last for long before Hartley springs his real job on Sean. Hartley is a bank robber and it is time to get back to "work".

When Hartley and Sean are robbing the bank in Visalia Sean is caught and sentenced to hang. Finally repenting of his rebellion Sean is prepared to enter into his Heavenly Fathers arms. Feeling the noose around his neck he is unprepared when the judge reads an old law stating that if a woman of good standing in the community offers to marry the outlaw he can go free. Charlotte(Charlie to the community) steps forward and offers to marry Sean.

Charlie is the owner of the local livery and is in need of a blacksmith for the business. With Sean's size he is the perfect candidate for the job. What Charlie can't figure out is how someone as gentle as Sean could have turned into a bank robber. As they become better acquainted Sean is determined to show his wife the love of Jesus Christ.

I love Sean's story. It shows how the Holy Spirit always leads His children back to God. Sean's situation is so heart-breaking, yet when he is broken the Lord lifts him up and gives him a renewed purpose in life. How tender Sean is with Charlie is so sweet. Charlie is so spunky and yet also vulnerable, and very loveable. The confrontation between Sean and his father is a great lesson in forgiveness and being responsible for our own actions. Once again a great story!

I really enjoyed the beginning and middle of the book. However, the end was very disappointing and was quite boring. The book was almost completely void of conflict. In the beginning of the book, Sean and Charlie are getting to know each other and it's all happy, but I kept waiting for one of the bad guys to show up or maybe some drama arise between Sean and his father. I was greatly disappointed. Sean is unrealistically perfect. He almost has no emotions except love. He prays to God and everything turns out great. I believe God works in wonderful ways, but in this book He gives the people the perfect life.

I will say this book was unpredictable. I kept expecting conflict or bad guys. Lori Wick had plenty of opportunity to write a great story, especially with the fact that Sean is a bank robber with a partner who is still on the loose, there is a man in town who wants him to hang, and he spent several years being angry at his father.
However, as I said earlier, each of this things were resolved almost immediately with little to no problems.

If you are looking for a Christian Romance story where God gives the characters the perfect life. This is the book for you. As for me, I found the book boring and discouraging as there are no perfect guys like Sean and God doesn't always give us exactly what we want.

Lori Wick's books are like comfort food to me. I know what I am getting as there are very few changes from book to book. They are predictable, but I can't put them down!

My favorite part of "Sean Donovan" is that the story continued on for a bit after the couple discovered they loved one another. I really enjoy books that show the troubles a committed couple faces, but many of Wick's books stop with the declaration of love.

Loved it. Love this series so much I read this book all in one day. It has been a while since I did that. I couldn't put it down. I had to find out what happens to Sean. He has been so hurt by his father's physical and emotional distance. I talked in the first two books about how I detested the fathers decision to stay in Hawaii and leave his motherless children to fend for themselves in California. Now his son is going to pay the ultimate price for his decision. I know that Sean made his own choices about how he dealt with the pain from his fathers absence but his father should have made better choices, too. Yeah, I got really pulled into this story and invested in these characters lives. It was easy to do. The series was very well written.

"'Fine,' he replied sullenly, and Katie found herself fighting to keep her own feelings from showing. All they did lately was quarrel, and Kate did not feel up to an argument tonight. She couldn't help asking herself, however, how long was he going to stay angry? How long were she and the family going to be make to suffer for something their father had done?" (pg 8)

"'Sean,' Rigg's voice was long-suffering. 'There are only three days left in May. The doctor told Katie yesterday that it could be any time.' Rigg wanted to add that if Sean would get his head out of his angry cloud and think about someone else for a change, he might have noticed how large and uncomfortable his sister had become.
Rigg would have been surprised to know that such words were unnecessary. Sean was giving himself the same speech. Unfortunately, he didn't believe his attitude to be his own fault; his father was to blame. If his father had kept just one of his promises, Sean believed he'd feel differently, but it was easier to blame his father than himself, and easier still to hide his pain behind a mask of fury." (pg 10-11)

"'Rigg, he's not ready to be out on his own,' she sobbed.
'I realize that, but as you've said many times, he might need to go through more pain before he sees that God has been in control from the very start.'" (pg 12)

"They talked that night and decided not to confront Sean, but to keep their eyes open for a while and pray for an opportunity to speak with him.
But no such opportunity arose. Rigg was at work, Marcail was at school, and Kate was with the girls at Grandma Taylor's house the day Sean wrote a brief note, left it in his room, and walked to the other side of town to catch a stage headed south. What never occurred to Sean was that his actions were exactly like those of the man he told his heart he most hated." (pg 14)

"'I can't sleep.'
'No,' Kaitlin spoke softly, 'I can't either. Are you worried about Sean?'
Marcail nodded, misery written all over her young face. 'Where is he, Katie?'
'I wish I knew.'
'I can't get him out of my mind.'
'I can't either.'
'Do you think he's in trouble?'
This time it was Katie's turn to nod. 'We've got to pray, Marc. God knows all about this, and we're going to give it to Him right now.'
Both girls bowed their heads. As sisters, each in her own way, the petitioned God on behalf of their brother.
Marcail, really still just a girl, asked God to keep Sean safe, and to bring him back to Santa Rosa right away so they would know he was all right.
Kaitlin, a mother, prayed differently. She prayed that Sean would make wise choices and seek God's will above his own. She also prayed that God would be glorified in Sean's life, even if that meant her beloved brother would have to know a season of pain." (pg 34-35)

"When Sean woke it was midmorning. He immediately remembered Duncan's words and thought of his own hanging. He realized that his head felt better, and his anger was gone, but his heart still thundered within him like that of a trapped bird. Trapped. A very fitting word for a man in a cell, and even though he wanted to blame Hartley, he couldn't. It was time to face the fact that he had no one to blame but himself.
Suddenly Hartley's words from the cabin as they bent over the plan of the bank came rushing back to Sean, you'll see.' Sean's throat emitted a horse, humorless laugh.
'You've been a fool, Sean Donovan,' he whispered. 'And you're going to pay for that foolishness with your life.'
Sean rolled over to his stomach on the narrow cot and let the tears flow. At the same time he wept, Sean once again began to pray. He surrendered his heart to God, with all it's anger and bitterness, for the first time since his mother died." (pg 45)

I won't tell you more, in case you want to read it. I don't want to spoil the whole story. I really loved it.

Certainly a feel-good, romantic read. Also very faith and prayer-based, how one shouldn't lose hope because God will use every broken past for His glory.

Though the premise is outlandish (a law saying you can marry someone who'll be hanged soon-- is there such a thing?! 🤨) I rather like being sucked into stories so I can enjoy turning the page and going on a journey. In this case, it's no less than God's hand, for sure.

*spoilers incoming - my reviews are kind of like book reports sometimes, so I can download my thoughts onto paper... You've be warned*

It gave us a bit of background on Sean's dark past, lost in his anger and bitterness that he just wanted to live his own life. His turning point though, wasn't detailed but I guess everything he learned about God from his childhood came rushing back when he literally was "dead" and then suddenly was given "new life". How he lost all his bad habits in an instant, I cannot relate with though 😅 he just suddenly turned godly and pure, felt like a different person altogether... But then again, isn't that God's work too?

Charlie has a past too, but we didn't really go into depth with her. Only that she had an abusive grandfather who didn't cherish her as a woman or nurture her womanhood. I guess I love that she heard the gospel from her husband and wrestled with faith on her own.

Fave quote/s:
"Pray believing, Sean." Patrick spoke with conviction. "God loves her more than you do, and nothing would give Him greater joy than to bring Charlotte to Himself."

"I need to tell you why I believe. First of all, belief is a choice. One of the first acts of faith is believing that the Bible is God's Holy Word, and that the words inside can be trusted and need to be obeyed. The Bible tells us that our life on earth is not forever; everyone's physical body dies, but there is life after death. It also says that all men sin and sin separates us from God, but Charlotte, honey, I honestly didn't know how to tell you any of this."

This book showed a redemptive love story in many ways through the eyes of Sean D. Even though these events are depicts in a different century of time, these situations still happen today. The highs and the lows were wonderful to read. This book present several events that kept me in anticipation of what was going to happen next. This book definitely fit the narrative of my life having lost my mother with I was young, getting into some trouble, living an ungodly life, but God. When a child loses a parent at a young age, it is predicted that said child has a less likely chance to success in life. They prone to be depressed and unable to cope with life. But in this book, as well as, in my life, we can see that if we trust God and allow Godly family and friends to be in our lives, the Lord will turn it around.

I loved getting into this book! Sean's story is something many of us can struggle with. We have all wondered just where we fit in God's story and find ourselves angry and want to run away.
Sean comes to understand that God has always been with him even during his worst moment.
He is blessed way beyond he ever thinks or imagined thanks to a circumstance and law he never knew existed. A person could save him from hanging by agreeing to marry him.
God knows the path for him and this courageous woman who agrees to marry him.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves romance found from circumstances beyond their control to a lasting commitment we all hope to find some day.

A fantastic book! I loved this story! It has themes of forgiveness, second chances, and true love! I also liked the aspects of community and family life!

Sean is very relatable. Being a pastor's kid, I get where his angst comes from. It made me so happy when he turned his life back over to God! Charlie is amazing! She's a survivor! She's strong, and she knows her own mind! Sean's family is so supportive and loving!

There's so much going on in this book! The best parts to me were when Sean reconnected with his family! A definite must read!

Ok, but the cover on here is hideous. The one my mum has looks a lot better.

Now that that’s out of the way, I love this book. I think this is about my fifth time rereading it and every time…*happy sigh* just so good.

I mean, it’s not a perfect book by any means. It’s a little preachy, kinda cheesy, and probably a bit cliche, but it’s been my favorite for years and no one’s taking that away from me.

Third book in Lori Wick's Californians series a historical Christian romance fiction. This book is about Sean Donovan. Bitter toward his father for leaving Sean and his two sisters alone in California, he gets into the wrong crowd, runs away from home and takes part in a bank robbery. He's the only one in the gang who gets caught and sentenced to hang.

We all experience seasons, Sean. They’re not the predictable seasons, such as winter and summer, but the unpredictable seasons that come into our lives. I’m talking about times of loneliness or grief, or seasons of joy and peacefulness. But no matter what the weather in our hearts, Sean, we’ve got to keep her eyes on God.

This was a reread for me. I devoured every Lori Wick book as a teen and this is one I never came back to. It's decent, but now that I'm older I do find the writing style tiresome and too preachy.
