First of all, shame on the dad. He should have took his wife to the woods. Mean stepmom.

"Hansel and Gretel" wasn't that deep of a story. Two kids escape from their parents, only to end up prisoners of a cannibalistic witch who lives in a cottage made of sweets. They escape the witch and run back home, where their father accepts them back with open arms (the mother died during their imprisonment). The story was a little gruesome and harsh. And I remember reading this kids book when I was a child!

This particular book adaptation of Hansel and Gretel has beautiful illustrations. The type is large and can appear to be a little overwhelming at first, but once you have started reading it is easy to keep reading. There are no other children Hansel and Gretel save at the end and they do make it back home to their father with the help of some birds.

No noticeable changes to the basic story; gorgeously bright full-page illustrations (on every other page, no less) by Gerry Embleton. Very nice.
