Bloodhunter

Rate this book
First he tried to kill her. Now, he's obsessed with her...

Six years ago Trinity Sinclair was the victim of a brutal vampire attack. The assault changed her into something she has only recently begun to understand, and connects her in unimaginable ways to her attacker.

But the dominating vampire who attacked her doesn't want to kill her. He wants to keep her alive.

Unfortunately, keeping Trinity alive won't be easy when nearly every vampire in existence wants her dead.

As a Bloodhunter, she is one of the very few humans in the world who can give a vampire his true death--and there is nothing worse or more terrifying to a vampire than true death.

Luckily for Trinity, she doesn't have to fight alone. She has a special sword and six protective people at her back-- The vampire master who attacked her, a mysterious hunter, and four incredible--and hot--supernaturals.
And she is as passionately drawn to them as they are to her--emotionally and physically.

Her unquenchable thirst for blood is matched by a primal, undeniable lust, and Trinity realizes she is in more danger of losing her heart and soul than she ever was of losing her life.

Six years ago, Trinity's all family died slaughtered by vampires. She was the only survivor and something changed that night in her.
Today, she has the scars to prove it, panick attacks and the vampire who killed everyone she loved stalking her. She hates vampires and when she manages to kill one of them she learns she's one of the few people able to do it and that they will be coming for her.

Bloodhunter is dark. It's painful, it's heartbreaking, it's violent and it's bloody. It's not for the faint of heart, people get slaughtered every chapter and it's full of hatred. But what makes the story even more gloomy are the characters.
There are no good guys nor bad in Bloodhunter. The characters are lunatic borderline bipolar, not likeable, fucked up and make an unconventional and very dangerous team.

→ Trinity : No heroine, blood hunter, full of rage and loathing towards herself. It was hard seeing her always getting back up, I wondered so many times why she was still alive because it was only darkness around her.

→ Angus : Ladies' man, bull shifter, at least a dozen of offsprings and a few exgirlfriends under the same roof. If he wasn't an overbearing sex on a stick, he would have been the comical relief.

→ Miriam : She doesn't know the difference between love and hate, she's either a friend or an enemy, jealous or caring, dangerous or protective. She's Clayton's master and torturer, she wants him to suffer but can't live without him.

→ Clayton : Golem, slave, ex hunter. He hates Miriam but he doesn't and he wants to be free but thinks he doesn't deserve it.

→ Shane : Veterant hunter, full time asshole and Miriam's ex brother in law.

→ Amias : Trinity's master, the vampire that almost killed her and made her more than human. He's obsessed by her, he's hers but leaves her to be battered and bruised all the time.

It was no easy read and I have to admit being in a serious need of cute cats and rainbows right now, but I couldn't put the book down before the end.

TW : violence, blood, PTSD, sexual situations and pretty much everything you can think of.

Someone, please, hand me a good book.

This was absolute shit.
What was the problem, exactly??

WHAT WASN'T THE PROBLEM??
Everything under the fucking sun was a fucking nightmare.
The infected
The human police
The vampires
The incubus
The dude who killed the Captain's niece but actually didn't kill her? They dated? Her family killed her? IS THIS A PROBLEM OR NAH??
The... I'm losing track. You get my point.

Let me ask a question:
If Captain Crawford KNEW that the incubus was the cause of the killings then WHY would his policemen go out and charter the supernaturals away from their homes? Does he have no control of his men? Did he order this despite knowing Trinity was "handling" the problem. Also, if they saw multiple victims with BITE MARKS FROM VAMPIRES, then why would they go out and take the supernaturals from their homes and blame them??
THE LOGIC RIGHT????

FUCK.
I am so frustrated.

Next question:
Is this even reverse harem??
Color me fucking shocked if it is or will be. Maybe in book two. Lets be honest with ourselves: reverse harem is usually filled with guys who look at each other as deep friends, or brothers, or even lovers. And they all equally fucking adore the center bitch who brings the team together.
The men in this book pretty much barely tolerated each other.
There was zero friendship there.
There's barely a friendship with Trinity but apparently there's a connection.
HOW.
Because apparently Trinity must "choose." Choose between who?
Angus is going to jail. Shane hates her. Rhys is... selling houses. Clayton is bound to the fucking Evil Bitch herself.
And why the fuck is Miriam part of this "harem" ?????????????????????????????????????????????
???????????????
??????????????????????????
??????????????????
?????????????
?
Fuck Miriam. Seriously. Her sadistic, ruined mind can take a ticket into the worst level of hell and plant her I-don't-even-know-what-she-looks-like happy ass there. I hope she has to eat her own shit for the rest of her sad life.

I just can't picture her being in the picture. At all.

I didn't like Trinity. At all.
1. She was emotion and emotion. One minute she's loving Clayton and the next she's pissed at him for his past. Oh-kay bitch, we've all done shady shit.
2. Honor, as mentioned. She's got none. But there she is being judgey. Like her word is good for anything. She's a mess.
3. Back to the emotions thing. She's so wishy-washy. She pretty much loathes Miriam but considers her part of this messed-up rat pack that's apparently a thing.
4. She needs to grow a fucking backbone.

Other characters I'd like to question:
Rhys: who are you? And what do you do besides add a sentence of commentary here and there during group meetings?
Shane: he's just a raging dick apparently and does nothing but hunt and scowl.
Clayton: oh how he hurt my heart. I feel like he's the only character who is well developed but at the same time not. Everyone else was severely underdeveloped.
Captain Crawford: why does he matter? Really. He gets her gigs? I mean she could just hunt on her own will right....? It's not like Shane is reporting for duty.
Miriam: please make a stage a left and keep walking and never come back.

This book was just a horrible trip.
I need more organization. That is all I ask.
A well-developed, complicated plot with some surprises is always heavily appreciated.
A fucking chaotic circus show with a bunch of horny, angry supernaturals is just annoying.
STRUCTURE, PLEASE.
Damnit.

Read #2 (nearly back-to-back, so that should tell you something) - liked it even more this time around. Maybe because I knew where it was headed and the frustrations didn’t hit me as hard. On to Caretaker, and I can’t wait! And maybe I should have said medium burn. Because it definitely isn't slow burn :) Oh, and it's going on my All-Time Faves list.

4.5 stars (the frustration still docks a half star, but the book in general really is 5 stars)

That was one hell of a dark, twisted, crazy, gut-wrenching, insane, roller coaster of a ride.

It was a strange combination of slow burn (because hell, it is hard to even see how this harem might be happening and who exactly might be in it), and explicit (because there were a number of hot, sick, twisted, and sexy scenes). Umm... did I mention dark? And twisted? Such as the first sex scene that took place covered in blood and wounds on top of piles of freshly killed vampires.

The main character, Trinity, is incredibly irritating for the first third of the book. One of those whiny, reluctant heroines who refuses to take two seconds to think rationally about anything, is full of knee-jerk rage, bounces aimlessly around reacting to everything, makes utterly idiotic decisions, doesn't care to figure out why anything is happening, never bothers to train, and other equally annoying character traits. There are some plot-related reasons given for some of that, but that doesn't make them any less annoying.

Fortunately, she gets over the majority of that by about halfway through the book, and I suspect there will be little of it in book 2. So a reasonably fast character-growth arc. Yay!

The potential harem is one of the strangest I can recall. In fact, other than a nebulous reference near the end of the book to a "connection" between the characters we spent the most time with, it is darn hard to tell who is RH love interest material. We have:

- AMIAS: Trinity's vampire master that betrayed her and murdered her entire family

- ANGUS: a rage-prone bull shifter who has tons of exes/girlfriends/lovers and dozens of children

- CLAYTON: a risen golem (former hunter) in thrall to a crazy arse necromancer b*tch who controls him utterly, hates him, and tortures him by not letting anyone touch him

- SHANE: an even crazier hunter who hates Trinity and is the brother-in-law of the necro

- MIRIAM: said necro b*tch who is undeniably broken, tortures Clayton incessantly, and is quite clearly female

- RHYS: a supernatural real estate agent whose supernatural race is completely hidden, we only see intimations that he is quite dark and dangerous

Interestingly, we are given few descriptions of the characters themselves. At least, not the usual litany of hair, eyes, body, height sorts of things. I'm not even sure we ever learn what color Trinity's hair is, do we? And there are very few true physical descriptions of Amias or Angus, though you get a real sense of their presence and personality. Despite that, they don't feel lacking in terms of character development. Well, maybe Rhys is, but that is because he is being deliberately kept a mystery, so I suspect that is coming.

And all of these characters are flawed. Very flawed. Nearly all of them so much that I disliked them at certain points - and a few that I am still not certain I like or think are redeemable. However, by the end of the book a lot of those perceptions changed. I started becoming quite attached to nearly all of the characters. Which says a lot, given where I started with them!

Despite all of this, and the darkness of the world Laken Cane has created, the story is incredibly compelling. And trust me, this world is dark. The prejudice of humans for supernats (as they call the supernaturals) is pervasive and utterly cruel. And the results are all too often heartbreaking.

All in all, I highly recommend this read - but be warned that it contains many many disturbing and violent scenes, some of it less than wholly consensual.

UPDATE PROGRESS NOTES:
81.0% "God this scene with Angus is heart wrenching. Nearly impossible to read. Very very dark book :("

63.0% "What is Trinity's harem going to be? Weird choices:
- vampire master that murdered her entire family

- risen golem (former hunter) in thrall to a crazy ass necromancer bitch
- even crazier hunter who hates her/is brother-in-law of necro bitch
- said necro bitch
- supernatural real estate agent I have no idea about - other than he is dark"

60.0% "Wow... I can find redeeming qualities in all the men Trinity has been interacting with so far. Except for Shane. He really is a royal jerk in every interaction."

58.0% "Wow, this is fairly dark. Lots and lots of morally ambiguous stuff happening. And plenty of characters that are a mix of good and bad. Lots of grey in this one!"

23.0% "Stupid woman. You don't have to, nor want to, live in the dangerous city with all the vamps you hunt. You can live safely and go out hunting. Doh! And you need help and training if you wanna stay alive. God her stupidity is pissing me off."

14.0% "Sigh...yet another MC who doesn't listen to anyone. Who doesn't seem to really care to get answers to things. Nothing but reactions and rage and confusing thoughts. Why the heck is this a THING?"

13.0% "I thought Amias said he attacked Carrie Alden? Or was she attacked by a sick vamp and Amias put her out of her misery?"

10.0% "Foolish, foolish woman."

This is probably one of the worst books I’ve ever read. Why did I read the whole thing? I held out hope it would get better... spoiler it didn’t. This was just absolute garbage I can’t even describe the hatred I feel towards Miriam. Let’s talk about her since she was the worst thing about this book.

Miriam was keeping Clayton (the only ok thing about this book) as a slave. She would brutalize him and would physically and mentally abuse him. I think there was also some talk about sexual abuse, and no one did anything! Everyone kept saying it was his fault, and he deserved it. This is terrible and I just cannot stand by it. I would also like to mention the fact that apparently she is going to be a part of the harem? No.

After all that the book really didn’t have any redeeming qualities. It was bad writing, the main character was terrible, there was no character development, and no world building. All in all terrible.

4.5 - Well, that was a dark, unique, and fun slow-burn Reverse Harem. Clearly enjoyed it. At times the main character got on my nerves a little but she kept redeeming herself. For once all the side characters stand on their own and are fascinating in their own rights. Sequel already started...Full review to come.

Wow Laken, just wow that book was fantastic! This is a story starting out with a vampire massacre because some of the vampires are infected and this makes them crazy. A lone girl survives this attack, and comes back with a little something extra. She also starts working in the supernatural community at a pizza place owned by Angus after she recovers. There are lots of different supernaturals such as a golem, a bull shifter, a necromancer, and also a vampire hunter. I loved this book and the characters in it. It has a dark Twist that I love in books. Clayton and Angus are my two favorite guys and I really wanted to beat Miriam, but at the same time I sympathize with her and what she went through. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone that loves reverse harem supernatural books! You will not be disappointed. You hit it out of the park with this book Laken and I can't wait to read the next one to see what happens!

This is another great series from writing duo Laken Cane. The characterizations are stellar with a diverse bunch of shifters and magic to bring this novel to Technicolor life. The plotline keeps you gluex to the pages of this fabulous, action packed paranormal romance.

So...I've been on this RH kick for the last few weeks. It's ridden me pretty hard (teehee...pun intended) much to my annoyance, and I've had a hard time trying to go back to normal one-on-one romance books. Seriously, I'm super annoyed because it's hard enough for me to find ONE decent man in this RL ick-forsaken world, but now my mind and damn body are absolutely convinced that I need NO LESS than at least three men in my life, and probably two of them need to be twins. Seriously...fml. I'm beginning to wish I never came across this whole RH genre.

Anyways. I suppose like any genre though, I have found myself annoyed with the typical formula that makes up the whole RH world; a Mary Sue, insta-love/obsession, and bad, bad, terrible decisions. Honestly, I was getting sick of the whole thing. I started to crave a character that was SMART, INDEPENDENT, and NOT SO DAMN SELFISH! I wanted men that didn't turn into sloppy love-sick puppies at the "mere sight" of the H. I mean really, is that too much to ask? With Bloodhunter though, I thought I found it! I really did. I was wrong.

After reading so many RH series recently (that I have not reviewed), why am I deciding to break that vow of silence and leave a review for this book? Let me tell you why. I'm fucking pissed.

Before this book, I thought that I hated a selfish Mary Sue...WRONG! I know now that I fucking hate selfish, ignorant waste of book space heroines. OH MY GOD...save me from conceited people that are dumb as fuck. Not only is the H irritating as fuck in this book, but she also thinks that she is so much better than everyone else. And...NONE of her supposed "harem" really like her at all. Don't get me wrong...that's what I wanted, a harem that didn't just throw themselves at the feet of a girl because they were "destined to be together," but I wanted the H to at least be likable, but Trinity isn't. And please dear LORD do not get me started on Miriam! Why TF does a character like Miriam even exist?? Seriously, why?? Trying to fit her into part of this fucked-up-as-all-get-out harem is not gonna work for me. You cannot possibly make me want and be okay with some psychotic sadist as part of the harem. Nope. Not gonna happen. No.

Who the fuck knows? Maybe it will get better, but based off this book, I'm disinclined to even want to find out. There was not a damn character that pulled on me enough to make me want to figure it out. If anything...this book made me relieved for the Mary Sues' of this genre, and that pisses me the fuck off to no end.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Laken Cane book and long may it last.. I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be reading the next one. If I had one niggle with it, it was that Trinity (our leading lady) comes across a little dim, I know she has been through a lot but at the rate she is going not only would she have slept with nearly all the guys in town (bit of an exaggeration here), but there is also a good chance they would have either been killed or severely maimed by being near her lol

And as for her crushing on Angus - This is the guy that sleeps with just about every girl he meets and if that wasn't bad enough this guy has something like 14 kids - no I am sorry but that's just too much.

I liked this beginning to a new series. I like Cane's voice. This story isn't as dark as Rune's, it might get there yet, but it still had some of the hallmarks I did like about her story.
At least in this book you know what might be happening with all the guys wanting a piece of the MC. A little less agonizing with that!

Being an avid reader, I can often unravel plot twists and turns within a few opening lines/chapters of a new book. But something amazing happens every time I get a new Laken Cane release; complete shock and awe. I'm so enthralled, so in the moment, every moment, that I'm not thinking ahead; every new and emotional nugget floors me and turns my world upside down. I absolutely hate comparing novels, but there are some Anita Blake vibes here. Like if Anita had a prequel series with a well thought out storyline and tortured past that explained her future drama this could be it. Obviously this is not that, and is in a league of it's own, but, the vibes...

Trinity our heroine/protagonist is thrust into this world of bada**ery that is far greater than she could've dreamed. Following a great tragedy, she not only has a vendetta, but realizes that she herself is 'more'. She's not a heartless monster despite her new role of Bloodhunter; but you can't help but wonder how long she can keep her soul, and keep it intact. Trinity, although nubile is no simpleton. She acts quickly, but with purpose. She's got this baby wonder woman affectation that's pretty cool, “Hometown glory" "Greater Good" "I'm so cute with my lasso" :D

The dynamic between Trinity and Amias is so painful, so deep, so sexy; every interaction causes a palpable spike in my heart rate. The relationship between Trinity and Miriam is so viciously charged yet feminine and tender; I'm sure that I'll still be trying to figure that one out for sequels to come. Surrounded by this pack of bi-polar, powerful, and deliciously looking protectors it's a wonder we all don't have a heart condition following this read.
These characters and their intense relationships with one another are inevitably what drive this story, and this is what propels this book from good to great.

I hate to say this, but I expected so much better. There were quite a few great ideas floating around in this book, but I'm really not sure about the execution. Something kept bothering me and not letting me fully connect with the story.
The book started out pretty promising, what with the whole "Thanksgiving Day Massacre" and the lone survivor of it, not to mention the weird virus that was attacking the vampires. It had the potential to become an amazing read. In reality? It was poorly thought through and the execution left something to be desired.
Here is the actual synopsis for you : “I was going to love and hate and have sex and fight and kill vampires”
To sum the whole plot up, it was a lot of running around and talking shit. None of the characters were likable or even someone you could connect with. The emotional aspect of the whole story was severely lacking and the plot itself took too many wild turns to be able to follow it.
In the end, I just couldn't do it. I stayed detached throughout the whole read and cannot say that I enjoyed it. I definitely wanted to, but it just never happened.

HER WICKEDNESS HAS DONE IT AGAIN! I am an avid fan of Urban Fantasy and have read other series, including Laken's Shiv Crew and Waifwater Chronicles, but I don't think I've ever been hooked as quickly as I was with Bloodhunter! Trinity drew me in immediately with her need to help (she MUST be a Sagittarius) and then getting bitten by that need, literally. She winds up in a town of supernats who are quite the cast of characters. I won't give anything away but- HE SMELLS LIKE CAKE! And, the moment Trinity realizes and accepts the changes she's gone thru is one of the most powerful and empowering moments of the book. Oh, and it's Reverse Harem! All I can say is hold on to your seats, we're in for one hell of a ride!

I’ve got to admit that when I started this book I was a little leery. LKH’s books went from zero to porn city pretty quickly, and with this being a reverse harem I was a little worried. I don’t know why I doubted. Laken is one of my favorite authors for a reason, and she has never let me down. This book was amazing. Were there sexy times? Yes, but if that’s not your thing then there’s also a kickass plot, great characters, and a captivating and sometimes brutal land where the supernatural population is surrounded by a human world that is both fearful and fascinated by them. Once you start reading it’s hard to put it down. So if you like a great story with a ton of action, a bit of darkness and a heaping helping of steam then you should definitely check this book out.

I received an ARC of this book. This is my honest opinion.
I've read several series from this author and have enjoyed them all. If you are a fan of the Rune Alexander series then you will definitely love the first in the new Silverlight series, Bloodhunter. Trinity is a strong heroine who did not know that she is a special breed of Hunter, a Bloodhunter, and in the introduction to this series she is learning exactly what it means to be a bloodhunter. She has an eclectic group of friends (some who are enemies) who help her discover who she is. Trinity has a beautiful cohort, the sword, Silverlight, who helps her rid the world of nasties. Together they are a force to be reckoned with and continue to grow in strength. I'm looking forward to watching Trinity grow as a Bloodhunter and anxiously await book 2!

I love Laken Cane's writing! All of her books just pull me in on the first chapter. Her attention to detail is so vivid it paints the perfect picture for me, without the usual fluff some writers seem to add.
Bloodhunter is a great beginning to an awesome new series. I have already formed an attachment, not only to Trinity, but to her whole group, and I am impatiently waiting for more.

Excellent start!

This was not the typical vampire supernatural book that I've read before. Trinity is human but now she has a little "extra". I won't spoil it for anyone. Miriam..my opinion she's crazy, but aren't we all. The men...one word...Yumm! This is going to be another hit series for Laken Cane. You won't be disappointed if you like supernatural sexy characters with plenty of action!

I absolutely loved this book. It has it all...a kickbutt leading lady, a fantastic plot, and a lot of amazing characters. These characters are all different flavors of supernats, and some are just down right dark, dangerous and delicious! It’s a great world that Cane has developed and I am super excited to see where she takes us on this ride.

Ugh, where to begin...

There's so much wrong with this book, where do I even start. Well to start, the plot is good, I like the idea behind a bloodhunter. What I don't get is the weitd relationship between Trinity and her master vampire. I mean with their traumatic history???? Yeah, not even slightly plausible she's gonna feel any love for him. Secondly, Trinity....I think the author tried to unfold a story to present her as a strong, badass type of character but it really didn't come through. I have read MANY reverse harem books. What really makes them work is when you can feel the connection and the love. The trouble I found here was the story starts with Trinity already knowing all but one of the harem members. However, it's presented like they are "friends". So my issue is there was maybe 1% love and 99% lust which does not make a good supernatural romance book. Lastly, the harem members themselves. Angus, the manwhore that spawns kids every chance he gets, really? Oh yeah, that's so appealing to me, NOT. And WTF is up Miriam? Is she in the harem or just a peripheral character? Either way I absolutely despise her and want her dead! Needless to say, I won't continue on to book 2.

Unless a book is so terribly written it hurts my brain to read, I generally force myself to finish. This book was borderline for me. There were some aspects I was highly intrigued with, and then there were some I just threw in the towel about it and stopped trying to comprehend.
Silverlight, the sword... I didn't understand the necessity or really the whole concept of its sentient instrument status. The whole burrowing into her, literally? That was just plain overkill imo. There was always so much going on all the time, that I lost information, or it slipped my notice.
Then, pair that with the MC's "newfound" abilities... like speed healing and trailing vamps? Not really clear on that either. Did she start healing like a supernatural after the massacre years before, or just after the vamp awakened whatever it is in her, and when exactly that happened I don't understand quite either... other than it was expressed the vamp was a major contributor to it.
The MC's friends? Sometimes it just seems like she just met them, but she has known them for years. Never getting close to any of them, so it's like every reaction she has or interpretation of their personailty is a new experience. Disjointed. Their friendships are disjointed to say the least.
To sum it up, great ideas but with overkill imagination and the info dumps from her friends who never quite explain how they know things, but supposedly every supernat knows... It needed to be reigned in a bit so there would be some clarity. The author put in a lot of effort, but it was just too much all the time, the flow of the story was too sporadic as a result.
