Temporary Bride

Rate this book
Lena Stevens has lived through more than her share of troubles. After losing her mother and father when she was young, Lena learned that every kindness came with obligation. Now a widow with a small child, Lena has lost the one thing she had left: her house. She has no desire to be a burden on her neighbor, even if the man was foolish enough to promise her late husband to watch out for her. But when propriety demands a marriage, Lena makes Anker vow to annul it come spring.

Anker has longed for a wife--but not like this. A forced marriage. A pretend marriage. He will do what he must to protect Lena and Charlie throughout the winter. But as days stretch into months, his admiration for the spirited young woman begins to turn to something else. Something more...

Anker and Lena both had their reasons for wanting a temporary marriage. But when spring arrives, will they regret their vow to end the union?

Linda Ford grew up devouring books and making up stories in her head—often late at night when she couldn't sleep. But she hadn't planned to write. Instead, she dreamed of running an orphanage. In a way, that dream came true. She married, had four homemade children, adopted ten and lived (at times, endured) the dream.

Writing first took her to non-fiction human-interest articles for newspapers and eventually a non-fiction book about tuberculosis set in the 1930s and 1940s (Touched By The White Plague). But romance had always been her first love and she turned to writing love stories. She is multi-published in the CBA market.

She lives on a small ranch in Alberta, Canada, where she can see the mountains every day. She and her husband continue to enjoy their children and grandchildren.

Nice, I liked it. Lena has her issues and is pretty stubborn, but the author gives reasons for her attitude. Anker is a good man, honorable and trustworthy. Of course, the end of the book was obvious upon picking it up. Surely as with all good romances, the two main characters will get together.

The final chapter closes the loop with a long standing issue resolved, and that was nice.

The author brings in God very naturally, usually through Anker talking to Lena. It was not preachy, just person to person observations. He does care about her spiritual condition and trusts God to change her heart. Anker is an humble man, long suffering and gentle with Lena.

There is a secondary theme of racial prejudice, but it is not harped on. Charlie has some Indian heritage, and Dakota territory had its issues with the Sioux, so there is some resentment toward little Charlie. Anker handles it well.

There is the typical Dakota winter weather of terrible snow storms. Two weather crises bring the main characters together as they struggle against the elements and have enforced time together. It is an example of how God works all things together for the good of His people.

Lena Stevens became Anker Hansen's Temporary Bride when as a widow, her house burned down and she needed shelter for her young son Charlie and herself for the winter. Anker made a promise to her dying husband to protect Lena and Charlie and he accepts the Temporary Bride idea but does not like it.

Both main characters are strong willed, honest and stubborn so conflict develops; it is dealt with in a mature manner with discussion, actions on Anker's part to prove his love and commitment to his new wife. Due to past hurts and losses in her life Lena young life she finds it difficult to accept a giving love that Anker offers. I loved the Norwegian traditions woven into the story and how it helped the romance develop in a natural manner. I look forward to reading another Christian romance by Linda Ford.

Lena was tiring

The whole book is about a woman, Lena, who can't get over her past of her mother, father, and husband dying, and her house burning down. Gets married to a true gem of a man so she won't have to try to survive on her own during the cold winter with her baby. Since it's a marriage of convenience and only for a season until she can rebuild her burnt up home, she spends the WHOLE book pushing God and this nice man away due to her past. So instead of counting her blessings or seeing the silver lining in some of the struggles she's endured, she remains a cold-hearted, depressed, tiresome woman. Instead of seeing the love God and this man have for her, she remains blinded by her own problems.

Spoiler alert:
I honestly was done with this book about halfway through but plodded along because I hoped she'd finally see the blessings right in front of her (she did....FINALLY). But only at the very end of the book and it sure was a long tiresome road to get there. Her husband deserves a medal.

I enjoyed this story of God's faithfulness even when the answers don't seem to be there at the moment! Lena thinks that she has lost everyone she's ever loved and she can't imagine it being any different. All she has left is her toddler, Charlie, and she will just make do with somehow giving him a home but even that seems impossible now that her home has burned down. When her neighbor, Anker, offers marriage, she very reluctantly accepts only because it's winter and she has no home or food for herself or Charlie. However, she tells Anker it'll be a marriage of convenience through the winter only and then she'll make her own way after that. She's had a terrible life where she's had to earn everything she's received, and she doesn't know any different. Anker is going to try to teach her God's way of receiving love without doing anything!
Anker was a saint in my book! He constantly showed Lena his love and God's love but boy was Lena stubborn. I think I would have given up way before Anker did! Lena was probably one of the most stubborn book characters I've ever read! Anker was SO good with Charline and normally that would have melted a mother's heart but it only slightly "thawed" Lena's! She was so determined to make it on her own. I would have thought in her situation that someone as good and as kind & loving as Anker would make a great husband, but her past was hard to get over. You'll have to read the book to see how it ends!!!

Linda Ford pens an enjoyable western romance novel. She hooks the reader with a story of a wounded and vulnerable young woman, Lena Stevens. So as not to give away too much of the story, the reader's heart goes out to this young woman who has faced so many tragedies in her life. As in most romance novels, readers look for a "knight in shining armor to come in to rescue the beautiful damsel." Ms. Ford introduces to us to Anker Hampton, and neighbor and former friend of Lena's deceased husband. How she brings these two strong willed characters together is remarkable. She does it through a "pretend marriage." You have to read this book to find out more.

I appreciated the way Ms. Ford crafted this character-driven plot. We see our two protagonists deal with their situation. She uses a dialog to move the plot line. I particularly liked the inclusion of the protagonists' internal dialog. I also found it fascinating that she decided to use a secondary character, Mrs. Miller, as the antagonist. I found this to be a clever strategy. Fans of Christian Historical Western Romances should definitely read this book.

This was not a typical genre that I read very often - it was purchased as a free eBook from Amazon so I thought, what the heck. I really enjoyed it - the plot was not overly involved; mostly a simple one involving just a few characters. It's a very clean book - one that I would probably consider 'G' rated.

The widow Lena is suddenly forced into an unfortunate predicament and needs a place to stay for the winter. To maintain honor and dignity, she agrees -albeit very reluctantly- to marry Anker, her deceased husband's best friend who promised to look after her and her son - so she can live with him throughout the winter season. She is absolutely intent on the marriage being temporary so that come spring, she and her son can leave and start a live on their own without being indebted to anyone else. Her biggest hurdle is learning to trust again, and Anker does everything he can to convince her life can be different from all that she has ever known.

From tragedy to love found!

I really enjoyed this book. It is a great HEA story. Lena lost her husband and a short time lost her home in a fire. She had no place other than a barn to live. A k kindly neighbor, who was a bachelor, offered her a place to live where Lena and her son Charlie could be warm. He offered to marry her to avoid gossip from the neighbors. No one else had made an offer to help. It was a marriage of convenience. They shared the house but not the bedroom.

Lena started having feelings for her husband and he had always felt love for Lena and her son Charlie. She began to make plans to rebuild her home and move back, then realized she loved her "husband." The story skips ahead to the addition of three additional children to their family.

LOVED IT! This book is NOT the run of the mill mail order bride or other but a widow with a small child who needs the help from a friend of her dead husband. She thinks she needs no help and is very stubborn with accepting anything. She was so hurt in the past that she fears 'owing' people for what they do for her. Linda Ford did a wonderful job making this an enjoyable read. I hated for it to end. Some parts brought tears to my eyes. I immediately started reading another of her books but decided not to right away. I needed time to let TEMPORARY BRIDE sink into my soul. There were so many wonderful references made regarding scripture that made even ME think. (and I AM a bible student.) But this is not an overly religious book that will scare some away from reading it. You will love this book as much as I did. Go for it!

Christian historical Western romance with a widow marrying her husbands best-friend when she is burned out of her house in the middle of winter.
Widow and mother to a toddler, Lena Stevens doesn't trust anyone, she did trust her husband to a point, but when he died and left her alone again, she doesn't want to chance loving again, but she is forced into a marriage with her neighbor when a fire burns her home. Anker is a sweet loving man that is accepting and kind, he has many friends and is used to love because he comes from a very bug loving family in Norway. Anker already is friends with Lena when they marry, and he already loves her little half native American son so much that he calls him, 'son'. Anker is the best! He should have his own self help book within this book.
Sweet clean Christian themed romance.

I was pleasantly surprised by this story. I thought it dragged on a bit and some of the story could've been skipped over to get to the more relevant parts. But my heart hurt so many times for these characters, one of whom was struggling with an inner hurt, the other who was struggling to love without being pushy. Anker's faith was inspiring and something I work toward daily in my own life so I felt I could connect with him. But I also felt able to connect with Lena since I worry and doubt far too often.
On the technical side, there were a couple of glaring typos which sort of jolted me out of the reading but by the time I reached them, I was far too invested in the story to quit.
If you enjoy historical romances which are clean reads and in which the characters face real struggles to reach a happy ending, then you'll probably enjoy this book.

Temporary Bride by Linda Ford is a historical western romance. This is a clean read, appropriate for any age. Ms. Ford has penned a well-written book. I love the characters, although there were times I wanted to give Lena a good shake. Lena's husband was killed in an accident and when her house burned down her neighbor Anker offered to marry her. Their story is touching and heartwarming. There is plenty of drama, humor and action to keep a reader's attention. This is a fairly short read, perfect for those with limited reading time. I enjoyed reading Temporary Bride. Temporary Bride is book 1 of the Dakota Brides Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

Surprisingly good book. Shows what real love is. Here are some quotes.

I promise you with my whole heart that what I do for you, the things I give to you, I give without thought of getting anything back. I want only for you to be happy.”

It was alluring, offering the possibility of giving without measure or cost, giving solely out of love.

I believe in God’s love. I believe in His promises. He says, ‘Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.’“

Do not fear the hand of the Lord, for at His hand are pleasures forevermore.”

This book will stay with me for some time.

This is a sad story with a happy ending. Anker is sweet, caring and honorable. Lena is stubborn, independent and untrusting. After her house burns down Lena reluctantly marries her neighbor, who was her deceased husband's best friend, but in name only, and only for the winter. While Anker has feelings for Lena and wishes for a real marriage, Lena refuses to trust in him and God again. But she finds herself fighting herself about what she feels for him. Anker patiently and lovingly waits and hopes for the best. She doesn't make it easy on him, she fights every step of the way.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Goodreads. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.

Temporary Bride should be called reluctant hard head

Lena, married Johnson and had a little boy whom they named Charlie. Johnson died in an accident but before his death he asked Anker to look after his family.

Lena is found one night holding Charlie tight to her self while her home burns. The town people come to help but because Charlie is half breed people look down their nose, you se Lena is a white woman and Johnson was an Indian. But the boy is the sweetest child.

I enjoyed reading this book, there is a lot of self doubt from Lena which is my only complaint.. other wise good book

Wonderfully uplifting story about faith and love!!!

This is a very well written Christian-based Romantic story about faith and love overcoming a tragic past. It's an emotional story about the painful scars of multiple losses of people you loved and the struggle to believe God still loves you. Overcoming the fear of opening your heart to love again because you fear the pain of losing that love is the core of this Romantic tale.

A must read if you want real Romance and the inspiration only the Scriptures and real faith provide!!!

Anker and Lena's story gives us insight into two lives : One feeling inadequate for a woman's love and the other not having experienced love and afraid to love. Anker is from Norway, a hard worker, and a man of his word. When Lena loses her husband, an Indian, and then her farm, Anker suggests they marry so Lena and her son, Charlie, have a place to stay for the winter months. As Anker's love for Lena and Charlie grows, Lena is determined to not love, return to her farm and rebuild. Will Anker's heart be broken or will God change Lena's heart?

What a good book! When tragedy strikes for a second time in Lena's life, her beloved friend picks up the pieces.
As Lena sits with her 18-month old son and watches her house go up in flames, she is more than determined to make things right. Already an outcast because of her marriage to an Indian, she and her half-breed son will have a difficult time getting on their feet again. Her dead husband's best friend steps in and helps them through the winter.
Great story with a great Norwegian accent running through my mind as I read this book.

Anker and Lina

Lina had lost her part indian husband and she and her son, Charlie's small home had just burned to the ground. All they had left was the clothes on their backs. Their neighbor, Anker keeping a promise to her dying husband, to keep them safe offered to marry her. She agreed to a marriage in name only into the next spring and then she would come back to rebuild her a house. This is their story of adventure, excitement and possibly a happily ever after. I enjoyed this story a great deal and believe you will too.

Report Bride

Nice story written quiet well, was much to made me believe that the novel was written with not much about children as those of us that have been brought up with siblings and also have children know that a baby as this child was supposed to be does not talk in sentences at such an early age. Interesting to show how faith in God and fear was handled, good story if you can put aside naive the way the young woman was and how she comes with a brutal up bringing, the end was quiet surprising. A quick fast read.

Love wins out in the end

Lena, growing up she lost her Mom when she was small, her father left her with a woman that should’ve been nicer to her. But instead she was very controlling person that took meanness towards Lena. Lena, met and married a man that was an Indian and had a son together. He was a good man, but met up with an accident that took his life. Then she met her husbands best friend. That’s all I’m saying, I do t want to give the rest away. I highly recommend this book

This is Lena and Anker's story.

I enjoyed this story. It was about a woman who had lost everyone in her life. She was scared to let herself love again. When her husband died and her house burned up, she had nothing left except her baby Charlie. A friend of her husband offered her to stay at his house, but the preacher said they would have to marry. Anker agreed she could go back to her house in the spring. Anker fell in love with Lena and did not want her to leave. Lena needed to accept love from God and let him guide her to the love she was scared to let in her life.

The characters were well-written.
Lena was raised by a woman that weaponized the Bible. She was ill-treated, and every little kindness shown to her required compensation. She doesn't trust gifts and favors.

Anker is a man who seeks to follow God. He reads the Bible to Lena, they pray and talk about the God she is just starting to believe in, though she's not sure she trusts Him. The way Anker lives—his words and actions—preach a better sermon than any she has heard. She gets most of winter surrounded by that.

The writing was choppy in parts, but the story was wonderful.

Nice read and a great message

I found myself relating at times to Lena, and this was a reminder to allow God to make beauty from my ashes. Interaction between Lena and Anker takes up about 98% of the text, so I would have liked to see additional characters developed to enhance the story. However, it didn't diminish the lesson of unconditional love and God's redemption of the broken.

Christian Romance

Lena has had a difficult life and after a fire burns her home she is forced to marry to make it through the winter. She wants an annulment come Spring. Anker tries to teach her about God and his love and through the winter he comes to love her and doesn't want her to leave. Lena has to face her demons and trust God. At times I was frustrated with Lena, but overall a good story with an HEA ending.

Personal Faith Journey

The story was set in an earlier time period of the United States and reveals a historical and specific socio-cultural context that was very different for women and First Nations people.

I really liked reading about the personal faith journey of a woman who had to endure a very difficult life so much so that she didn't know what love was.

It also reveals the power of prayer through suffering, adversity, and healing.

Good Read

This book spoke to the heart of relationships. Our relationship with God and those we allow close to us. Looking at the way a person treats other and how they honor their word over time establishes trust. Trust is the key to relationship. When a person accepts that their future can be more than their past they can grow in trust. This book is a great story of two hearts that long for relationship.

Temporary Bride (Book 1) By Linda Ford

Five w, a good christian novel, Lena had been misuse and carry a lot of baggage... Anker was a neighbor who made a promise.. To take care of Lena and her son.. Opportunity comes with a fire and marriage.. She wanted to hang on to what was hers, no trust not even in God.. Anker went out of his way to show her that God love her..It took her to the end of the book to realize that God did love her..And it was a good ending.
