Midnight's Crown #2

Shadow of Thorns

Rate this book
Secrets can’t hide in daylight…

Hudson, Valen, Sylvain, and Marcus revealed their secret to Briar Hale, and she astonished them.

The four vampires hadn’t expected her to handle their revelation so easily, but Briar is a scientist and recognizes there are all manner of creatures in the world—some benign, some predatory, and some, like the brothers’ maker, pure evil.

Caught in Asher’s sights, Briar fights not only to stay alive, but to stay sane. Asher is in her head, whispering doubts and bringing to light her vampires’ hidden pasts. He shows her everything—every bloody, terrible, heart-wrenching moment.

But she is stronger than Asher and the horrors stalking her vampires. Briar loves them, and she won’t give them up, nor will she let them give up on each other.

With war on the horizon, Briar, Hudson, Valen, Sylvain, and Marcus will have to fight Asher and the secrets threatening to rise up and destroy them.

***Shadow of Thorns is the second book in the Midnight's Crown Trilogy.***

This book was SOOO much better than the first. It still starts out slow like the first book did. But it definitely picks up and you get your first taste of smut! Which is fan-freaking-tastic. I still love all the guys and can't pick who I like best. But I feel like I don't need to because they're all super unique.

AND THAT ENDING! -.-

This book was quite entertaining.

I think what makes this book so interesting is because of the h. Because she is rational and use's her brain, it makes her more relatable.

Her love for her guys and their love for her shines through.

Eagerly awaiting for the final book..

Edit 2024:
I found the audiobooks included in my subscription. And I enjoyed them like the first time. I like that the vampires are predators but they try to hide it at first and then they try to be sensible about it. I like authors who describe vampires in a more unique way than the old vampire films like Dracula. I liked Briar, who was a good fit for the four vampires and always found a way to involve the two who were not scientists in their science talk.
I recommend this series, it was a good one.

Shadow of Thorns is the second volume of the Midnight Crown series. I liked the book really well. It was very entertaining. Many things that happen are somewhat unexpected, which contributes to the tension. I'm looking forward to the next sequel.

I didnt enjoy this book as much as the first one, seemed to lose some of the magic that made it interesting. The guys' father becomes a huge role in their lives particularly in the heroines dreams. He was more of an annoying outside threat who was bored and mad his creations didn't want to play with him anymore. Good riddance to him but now who will be the big threat in the final book? I'm guessing maybe it's Briar herself who will be her own worst enemy but I guess it'll depend how much she actually changes. I do admire her passion for wanting to know and study about her illness and theirs so I hope they can at least get some answers even if it's not a cure!!!

ALRIGHTY THEN.

So what's the last book about? That ending was mildly amusing if not expected, but now I fully wonder what the hell is gonna go down in book 3.

Let's get some things squared away.
Much needed sexy-time?
Proclamation of undying love?
Battle with the enemy?

Now we just gotta tie shit up in a neat little bow right????
RIGHT?
So: what's gonna happen in book 3?

I want to say I liked this book as much as book 1, but I am being honest here.
No. I didn't.

If I am assuming correctly, book 3 is about her being a .

I JUST NEEDED MORE EXCITEMENT IN THIS BOOK.
What do I gotta sacrifice for this? I love the sunlight.
*steps into sunny rays of tanning goodness*

Yes, book 3 is on my list. Right after lunch. Girl's gotta eat.

At least this sequel was hotter? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Um, there's a evil villain guy who gets a lot of play in this installment, and a lot of the vampire boyfriends' past is unearthed, but I'm still just not invested in these characters or this story in general. I don't read reverse harem just for the sexy times. I read for a deeper emotional connection. I want to see the bond and understand why it makes sense for them all to be together and for them to prove that it can be done without getting weird. And, like, none of that was really accomplished with this book. Needless to say, I'm done with this series. For real this time.

The second book turned out just as addicting and mind boggling as I imagined it to be.

I simply adore the characters, there's no other word for it. I love how they approach every supernatural occurrence with a scientific mind. They alway try to find science based reasons and solutions for everything that is happening, and I found it so cool, for some reason. It was definitely refreshing, if nothing else.
The characters worked great as a team, but I also appreciate all of them individually.
Briar was so grounded and wise, despite how she was brought up, that I couldn't help but love her. The way she reacted to every new development and how she never blamed the guys for anything they did, just...damn, girl. “It wasn’t a problem she could solve, so she moved on.” She's the epitome of my favorite lead female character, I swear!
And the guys! They're like a dream team, or something. I love how every one of them is distinctly different, with their own demons and problems, and their own something special that you come to love. And, thank you, dear author, for the way they look at their relationship with both Brian and Annie. They never want to compare what they had with Annie to what they now have with Briar. Both experiences are equally important to them and they refuse to diminish either of the connections comparing them. That's just..thank you.
The events taking place were both expected and surprising at the same time, if that makes sense. Like, we all new that the confrontation with Asher was inevitable. But I personally expected it to happen way further into the story, like the last book of the series kind of further. Actually, everything that happened at the end of the story I expected to take place way later into the story.
But now that everything I expected to happened in the next book took place here, it begs the question - what's next?

Shadow of Thorns is the second installment of the Midnight’s Crown series (Briar is the first) and I was just as riveted by this as I was by the first book — if not more so! I love the relationship between Briar, Marcus, Hudson, Sylvain, and Valen! It’s developed so much more, and I adore how protective they are of her and how understanding and accepting she is of them.

I haven’t read very many reverse harems, but this one is wonderful! Each male has his very own personality and you can tell each them apart easily. They are their own character. It’s really hard to choose which one is my favorite because I love them all! When I think I’m in love with one, another takes his place, then the other, then the other. #whychoose

The writing is compelling, and I was totally sucked into this story. I can’t wait for the conclusion of this series, so they can finally have their HEA. These males deserve it, and they need it with Briar. Highly recommended!

Mkay. Not sure where we're going to go from here. Who's going to be the antagonist? That end battle was a smidge anticlimactic. Like, if ya'll had the ability to just rush him and tear him apart....why couldn't you do that BEFORE the love of your lives was killed? But I'm a fan of her becoming a vampire from it. It's a convenient way for her to live with them for eternity without the moral dilemma of should they turn her even if she wants it. Finally things got physical in this book! I can appreciate slow burn, but it's still a relief when the tension breaks. I also gotta say, the biology references aren't too bad. I've only got a couple college credits in microbiology and I understood everything and it was accurate to what I remember. So, not super advanced stuff like they're suggesting, but not terrible.

Sadly I lost interest about this book... I took a break from it (which is never a good sign for me) and won't resume reading it actually.
I can just say that it's not a bad book at all. Maybe things are dragging a bit too much🧐

*There are spoilers from Book One

It started with cheese. A lot of cheese. So much so I was confused and had to re-read the first book to remember how we got to these sugary cuddles.

And then I was all grossed out because someone was cradling a deer and then embracing happened and I'm like: Ticks! You guys may be impervious but my girl is still human.

And then I got a liiittle bored and impatient. All this love being thrown around drove me crazy because I wanted to SEE how it happened. I like watching seeds grow. (Not really) But Briar still seemed childlike sometimes which had me second guessing the love again.

But I kept laughing throughout this book. Silly inconsequential little things that were dry and sarcastic and made it more fun than the first book. (Still slow though... So if you didn't like the first book... The love won't bloom here either)

I know people love bromance, sadly, I'm not usually on that team (I love my MM though). So Valen being so wrapped around Sylvain had me wondering if he had enough room in there for Briar too...

And then Annie. There was so much Annie.

Their secret is out. They're vampires! Oh my! Briar barely even blinked an eye at that revelation though. Unfortunately, that's not the only secret the guys are hiding. They are still hiding their dark pasts from Briar, afraid she will hate them for the things they've done. Asher uses that against them all while he's torturing Briar without them knowing. Will she really turn her back on them when she knows the truth? Will they be able to figure out what Asher is doing in time?

Still my favorite series by Ripley!! I've been dying to know what happened next after Briar and man, I was not disappointed with this one. We pick up right where we left off, Briar recovering from her injuries and staying with the guys. She's still working in Hudson's lab and going to classes. I love the little banter between her, Hud, and Marcus about who's lab is the best. She's still working on breaking down the barriers the guys have up. To show them that she accepts ALL of them. Then of course we have a-hole Asher. He's been hiding in the background working on his evil plans.

This book takes us further in the relationships Briar has with the guys. We spend some time with them and learn more of them individually. We learn a lot about their pasts. There were some times this book had my emotions running on high. Some moments got really intense. And wow oh wow that ending! Make sure you read the intro into the next book at the end.

So yea, like I said, LOVE this series. My absolute favorite by Ripley. I'm sad that it's only one more book but I'm waiting on pins and needles now on it to be released to see how everything plays out.

Shadow of Thorns brings the return of my favorite vampire-lite, Briar and her men, the vampires, Hudson, Valen, Sylvain, and Marcus. The men have shared their biggest secret with Briar and instead of watching her run away screaming in fear or madness, they have been surprised with her easy acceptance of who and what they are. Briar accepts the men and their 'beasts' completely, the good and the bad. She's falling for these men as they are. Unfortunately, with their attention, she also caught the eye of their creator, Asher. Asher failed once in his attempt to have the men kill Briar but now wants her for himself. He visits her nightly in her dreams creating an in-between world where he torments her; showing her the past, bloody misdeeds of her men, sharing their worst secrets, and drinking from her. Even with her health failing, Briar manages to outwit Asher but by doing so causes Asher to step up his war against Briar and his sons. Asher is determined to have his sons back under his control and to destroy the woman that means so much to them. The outcome of his war against them will be deadly for at least one side if not both. There will be death.

This second book continues the excellence introduced in book one. Ripley Proserpina creates exceptional characters and places them into 'ordinary' relationships even if the circumstances are anything but ordinary. Capturing an ordinary relationship at its most basic level and from every angle is uncommon. She captures every nuance allowing you to be more than just a casual observer, you become immersed in the story, completely enamored of the characters. This book offers more insight into the guys' past and their fears about living with and loving Briar. Secrets are revealed. Their past is not pretty; they are guilt-ridden, ashamed, and scared of Briar's reactions. Briar's acceptance of everything is amazing. Her beauty as a person is unrivaled. I have such respect for her strength, both physical and mental on every level. She has the ability to love every aspect, every action, every single part of those she calls her own. She's brave, protective, kind, and loving of her men. She matches them intellectually. She is a worthy woman to be with these accomplished men.

This is a book full of battle strategy and deepening relationships. The steaminess rises but on a realistic level. This is an actual relationship while a bit unconventional. This is not insta-love or insta-lust but a true connection of minds and spirits. There is an advancement in physical relations that moves at a perfect pace. There's suspense, tension, and action. The ending evokes nearly every emotion possible. It's not so much a cliffhanger but more the ending of one story and the beginning of the next. I look forward to seeing what happens next; what major and minor changes are in store for Briar and her vampires.

OhGodOhGodOhGod.

Book 1 seemed like a long time ago but once I started this read, it actually felt like home. Like I didn't need a re-read to refresh my memory. And I couldn't believe its release sneaked up on me. Suddenly it's just there, live. (Which is lowkey better because I'm not aware and counting down the days.)

The story line. If I were to separate the plot, I'd probably give it a 4 star rate. But because of the dynamic characters, the way they all work together like well-oiled machine, or the way they seemed to deduce their circumstances (through smart questions), and, of course the way they proceed from then on-jfc, I couldn't resist being wowed.

Prime example was Briar, the vampire lite heroine extraordinaire. I freaking love her. She's quiet but steely and shy but direct. And as I was saying, the way she asked questions, her investigating skills...wowza!!! I was always blown away from her unending questions but honestly that just validated how unparalleled her brain worked. Ugh, major fangirl here, yesssss!!!

Relationship-wise, she was also wise beyond her 22/23 years of age. As if the guys weren't centuries older than her. She maturely accepts the weaknesses and vulnerabilities of her men. That wasn't to say she wasn't prone to jealousy or any other same thoughts and emotions but her compartmentalization skills are soaring to the roof! And I loved how the guys, esp during their lowest. Her heart was so big she filled four other empty hearts.

Sylvain. Sometimes, I saw his over-protective, surly and fierce ass comical. Like no matter how grumpy and old he acted when it came to Briar's safety, bottom line was he's putty in her small hands. sorry not sorry he's my fave.

Valen. He's probably next to Sylvain the beast. Valen was the nurturing type. With that said, he wasn't really all that nurturing before. And Briar and I loved him, still. Despite of that, as Briar eloquently put, it made him the Valen he was now.

Marcus. One thing that niggled at the back of my mind was that observation of the guys regarding Marcus-the one wherein he was able to meet Asher twice in a row. I don't know if this tidbit was significant but yeah. Also, if it was also connected to his reluctance to shorten the self-imposed distance he had with Briar.

Hudson, his unspoken leadership throughout the centuries was amazing. He was obviously the pillar of these brothers. There were times though when I thought he lacked moments with Briar. But mostly because he was busy forming strategies vs Asher situation and deep in research for Briar's condition. Hopefully, he would get more 'screen time' with her.

**Warning: this text may contain spoilers**

SO....I haven't finished this book, but I just eagerly devoured the first and am part way through the second and am noticing quite a few inconsistencies, though if you can correct me, please do in the comments!

NOTE: I LOVE THIS SERIES. The part about the inconsistencies is simply to ask the community about whether I'm remembering wrong or if I'm not crazy. I love how Briar is smart, and doesn't react in the typical heroine fashion. Each of the boys has his own voice and personality (I'm in love with Sylvain). Just wanted to make it known that I'm not trying to bash on the book. It is wonderful.

Without further ado, SPOILER ALERT

1. Wasn't it said in the first book, when Hudson was apologizing to Marcus that Hudson was the one to change Annie? or at least the one to make the decision to do it. In this book, it says that Valen is the one who decided to do it and actually do the deed.
2. In the first book, when Hudson looks at Briar's genes and sees that she has Vampirism and not EPP, he notes that her parents both have the recessive gene, and that it only got passed down to Briar, not her brother because of how genetics works. In this book, Briar says that only one of her parents has the recessive trait.
3. Sylvain, I believe, said in the first book that he got his eyebrow scar from his sibling throwing a hatchet at him. In the second book, he says it's from a bear. Am I remembering wrong?

I think that's all for now. I'm at 75%. I think there is one I'm forgetting, but you get my drift. While it's not a deal breaker, it is definitely distracting.

UPDATE
I just finished this book. I. Fucking. Loved. It. I mean, some of it was similar to what I've read in other book series, but obscure enough and dissimilar enough that it's not like copying. The end just smacks you across the face with surprise and I love that there's a surprise around every corner (or page, as it happens). Anyway, I fully recommend this book!!!

This is the second book in the paranormal reverse harem (RH) series Midnight's Crown (read "Briar" first). I continue to really enjoy the four vampire heroes of this reverse harem - Hudson, Marcus, Valen & Sylvain - they are super protective, which I love, and there is the time-honored metaphorical/analogous vampire trope of the tortuous craving for blood from the human they love - a theme that I believe is what has made vampires such an enduring fascination in popular culture for centuries.

Something that sets this series apart is the heroine is just as protective as the heroes, and just as intelligent as them, coming at things they have been working on from a different perspective. She is brave and loving and is so wise and non-reactionary in her actions/reactions. I really respond to the way she loves these heroes so unconditionally.

I've always responded really well to this author's writing, and this book is no exception. The writing is thoughtful and steady and tells a seamless, cohesive story, which I SO greatly appreciate, as so many reverse harem books I have read in the last two years seem more like an outline of "events" with little to no connectors or pointless filler in between. The heat level is very mild (on my meter); I always find this author's love scenes to be tasteful and emotional rather than "hot", and this isn't a criticism in my eyes as I like to read a range of heat level, depending on my mood. The ending to this second book had a perfect symmetry that I really liked, and was an ending to the arc (rather than a big cliffhanger).

Since I read so much RH I rate them on their own bell curve, and this one is definitely a 4.5-5 on that scale for me. I look forward to seeing what happens next in the series - how their lives and relationships change after the events in this book.

Oof, this one was so GOOD.

We jump right back in with Briar and her vampire boyfriends a few weeks after the events of Briar. She’s unknowingly being subjected to Asher in her dreams, waking up from his cruelty and not remembering what happened. Hudson, Marcus, Valen, and Sylvain are all focused on killing Asher but are concerned for Briar. She seems to not be actually getting any rest and aren’t sure why.

First, let me just say that I love how this story is using vampirism not as lore and supernatural, but based on science and mutations. It’s a different perspective than other paranormal books and it’s really cool to see how they dive into theories with one another about vampires, soldiers, and even the crawlers.

We get to see so much character backstory and relationship development! It’s all so so good. I’m still such a Sylvain fan, it’s not even funny. I love the open discussions they have with one another and there isn’t a single god damn misunderstanding in sight that is hung out to dry for chapters on end. It’s so lovely to see healthy communication. Here. For. It.

Briar, again, is such a good main character. It’s honestly so fucking refreshing to see this intelligent woman navigate a relationship with these undead dudes and not be a complete ditz or Mary Sue about it all. She’s always thinking and her love of science helps ground her to logic. Briar loves them and they love her. The wonderful slow burn progression of the series has started to heat up and it’s awesome to see.

I can’t believe the cliffhanger. I’m so hype for the next book.

Lots and lots of spoilers.

This entire world Ripley has created just completely blew up and expanded in this second book. I loved the first one, but Shadow of Thorns gives a more vivid and enhanced look into the lives of our MC’s.

Super crazy what they discover. Honestly, hand to god, love the way Briar’s brain works. She asks all the questions I have rattling around in my skull, and more. She’s kind and open, and just shines. Super cheesy feelings right now, but oh well.
That ending has me wanting to curl up in a corner and bawl my freaking eyes out for an absurd amount of time.

We are given so much more in depth knowledge into Valen, Sylvain, Marcus, and Hudson’s backgrounds. Reading their contrasting personalities, and experiencing their adorable brotherly bickering. I’m surprised I could love them anymore than I did after devouring the first book.

Thank fudge. The a-hole Asher is in pieces. He is so conniving and just plain evil. What the actual f**k!? How does someone go that cookoo? Or was he just born with a couple extra helpings of crazy?

There’s one thing I definitely don’t want to spoil, I feel it’s extremely obvious that it’s an inevitable outcome. But all the same, I wanna leave ya guessing.

I really couldn't lay it down. After book one, I had an idea how it would work out. I hadn't expected that ending . Though, I had expected the outcome for Briar.

The whole book, like the first, was full of twists and turns. Though, the main point for me in this series are the characters, their development and feelings/reasons and their relationships. I could feel it vividly. Still, it's not perfect. But it's perfect for my taste.

If you want to know about steamy scenes. In book two there are some. I don't want to spoiler. But I'm glad something happened. I'm not big on slow burn. I read them every once in a while, yes. And I enjoyed them if there is a lot of tension, that build the anticipation. Book one didn't do it for me in that regard. Book two is better, but still to tame.

But, that's not what the main argument for this series is about. It keeps my attention, as I stated before, because of the characters and the plot. It's so unique to me. And the kind of steam suits the story and the relationship between Briar and her guys. So, it's okay for me.

After the ending, I'm intrigued to know what comes next. Obviously, there is more to the backgrounds than we have seen so far.

I absolutely loved Briar, the first book in this trilogy. I found it be different, Briar having EPP something different I hadn't read about and I thought Briar was a fantastic character. She was fiercely intelligent and while a little shy, due to her condition she had an adventurous streak, wanting to explore the world.

She didn't run screaming when she found out Hudson, Valen, Marcus and Sylvain were vampire, and from a scientific point that her condition was more related to vampirism than EPP.

In Shadow of Thorns it opens to Briar being tormented by Asher in her dreams, night after night, being forced to forget by him before she wakes up but dreading going to sleep each night. The guys are unaware of what their maker is doing to Briar, but making their own plans to take him out.

But Briar also wants to help, in her own way with her gorgeous big scientific brain. I admit I adore her, smart and beautiful, despite her burns and a gorgeous heart. Her character grows and her bravery becomes apparent, even when facing her biggest fear. She is falling for these four beautiful vampires and she will do anything for them. Even face rheir maker. But this Rose has Thorns...

<3 this book. It is not a cliffhanger but I am waiting impatiently for the third book to come out. If you are confused by my 4 star review let me educate you. These books are not very long and are one story. Had they been released as one book I might consider that for a 5 star review, but this segment of the story does not leave me with a book hangover or change my world view in an epic way.

Without giving away too many spoilers, we are falling in love with these fantastic men who happen to be vampires. In a twist of fate they can walk in the sun but our heroine cannot. She is becoming more intimate with her relationships and they are all learning to cope with sharing/jealousy issues. In two books we have spent a significant amount of time in Hudson's lab learning about vampirism and the difference between what Briar thought was wrong with her and why she really cannot go in the sun.

Asher must be dealt with but our men are all worried what Briar will think of them after their pasts' are revealed.

I am hoping that Marcus will get his wish and the next book will have some quality time in his lab at Harvard.

Continuing my journey with Ripley Proserpina's series, I recently listened to *Shadow of Thorns*, the second book in the series. Similar to its predecessor, the pacing remains slow, which I found to be both a strength and a challenge. The narrative still carries a childlike tone despite its mature content, creating a contrast that left me somewhat conflicted.

This installment did introduce a couple of spicy scenes, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the story. The characters remain likable and engaging, and the plot kept me hooked—even as I occasionally found myself thinking, “Are we there yet?” The last few chapters delivered an exciting shift in pace, offering a payoff that made the earlier slog worth enduring—though I wish some details hadn’t been glossed over in the rush to the finish. Unlike the first book, *Shadow of Thorns* ends on a cliffhanger, leaving me intrigued and eager to see where the story heads next.

While pacing issues and tonal clashes persist, this book brings just enough something, both in its spice and its story—to keep me invested in the series’ unfolding mysteries. While some parts were predictable I still want to hear how this series ends.

How have I survived this long without this series?

Oh my god is this series good. I love Briar and all her men. Briar is this sweet southern girl, but she's also stubborn and SO strong. But unlike some RH, this book feels as much about the men as it goes the leading female. The POVs switch between each of the men, and I always enjoy seeing their POVs. Usually I want to skip over certain POVs to get back to the main story, but in this series EVERY point of view is the main story, which I really appreciated!

Asher is at it again in this one, tormenting poor Briar, leaving them all pretty much in the dark about what's really going on, until they find out, and all hell breaks loose.

This book was well paced, with amazing characters, a great storyline, and left me DYING for book 3! Especially with that ending! Even though I definitely saw it coming, I still cried, and basically cheered when the 'reveal' happens. I won't say what it is, because I don't want to accidentally spoil it for anyone!

I enjoyed Briar very much, and book two Shadow of Thorns steps it up a notch. Briar and her men, Hudson, Valen, Sylvain and Marcus have finally shared what they are. Expecting alot more than what happened, they each start letting her "see" them, beasts and all. She is falling harder for these men, but danger lurks even in dreams. Asher, in his previous attempt to have her killed, decides her wants her for himself. But with her men protecting her, he cant get close to her. Or can he? Asher wants his sons back in his control, by any means. Shadow of Thorns takes us on Briar's journey of understanding, acceptance, love, fear and new beginnings.

Do not miss this series, if you love vampires, a fun, smart female lead, and sexy alpha vampire men, this series is for you.

Another great book by Ripley Proserpina. I already know that I am going to miss this world after the next book is finished. This was the perfect follow up to Briar, and the characters and world keep growing.

The relationships, both romantic and familial, were the focus. I could feel the connections every character had to one another because they were so tangible. I also loved that we got more backstory for the guys. It made them feel more real.

All of this does not mean that there was no plot. We were introduced to Asher, the big bad, at the end of the first book, and he was not absent from this one. The stakes were high in this book, and it had me at the edge of my seat.

I'm so ready for the next book, but I'm not ready to say goodbye to these characters.
