It's true, I did half-expect a full wipe-out-the-world scenario, and thanks to the many horrible scenes of neglect, rape, and abuse happening to all these kids, I can't quite say that humanity ought to escape such a fate.
It's just these few kids who still have hope, who try to be nice in the face of all this... nastiness... who fight through the darkness that's both so real and tied to closely to the fantastic dragons... that stands against total annihilation. And I know that sounds trite, like this, but the manga is wonderfully subtle and silently horrible even as it snaps with shape-changing dragons and fighter jets. It's so jarring and strange.
