USA TODAY Bestselling author CHRISTI CALDWELL blames Judith McNaught's "Whitney, My Love!" for luring her into the world of historical romance. While sitting in her graduate school apartment at the University of Connecticut, Christi decided to set aside her notes and pick up her laptop to try her hand at romance. She believes the most perfect heroes and heroines have imperfections, and she rather enjoys torturing them before crafting them a well deserved happily ever after!

Christi makes her home in Charlotte, North Carolina where she spends her time writing her own enchanting historical romances, and baking surprisingly good cakes (almost 2 years in lockdown will do that) with her courageous son and twin daughters, each who with their daily antics provides limitless source material.

Chloe and TENNYSON!😳

The Lady Who Loved Him

How does a favorite author redeem one of the most hated characters in her portfolio?

Two Sides to Every Story

In this instance, she builds suspense by announcing her intent to redeem him in Book 2 of THE BRETHREN series and holds the identity of his intended heroine close to the vest for months on end. Reader speculation grew rampant. Pros and cons of popular female characters from existing series were weighed and measured assiduously.

Ultimately, she barely had to write a word once the announcement was made.

Lady Chloe Edgerton has made a match!

But with TENNYSON? 😳😳😳

This reader personally withdrew from all online discussion once the announcement was made. I read no reviews prior to reading this book. I wanted all reflections to be my own - unfettered by the opinions and reflections of others.

Chapter 6 Redemption in Sight

"But they didn’t question. And they didn’t see."

I vowed to state when I started to feel Tennyson's redemption. Therefore, I am writing this review in real time as I progress through the story. I will admit that it was at the start of Chapter 6. Probably far too early in the narrative for someone who has loathed the man for years, but there you have it.

Until the author peels back the layers and produces the source of the tears, you will never truly know a character.

We first met Leopold Dunlop, Marquess of Tennyson (TO REDEEM A RAKE) in his role as the bogeyman of Daphne Smith's lone debutante season. He was the smooth-talking debaucher of her innocence with his promises of a future marriage and then heartless taunting words - "never tupped a cripple." Those words, repeated like an endless Greek chorus, haunted this reader and colored every subsequent appearance by the dissipated, debauched lord in succeeding books. It was a shorthand, if you will, that heightened my distaste and drove my very vocal disdain of him as an antagonist.

Then I get to 56% and he keeps bringing it up! Yikes!

Upon learning of Tennyson's planned redemption, I worked up excuses in my mind for his long ago reasoning. Lo and behold, my imagination was correct. I leave it to the reader to see for him or herself what my imagination conjured, but sure enough it was spot on.

Lady Chloe Edgerton

I have followed the HEART OF A DUKE series assiduously from the first story. Once Lady Chloe Edgerton was introduced, with each successive book, I clamored for her story. Let me state for the record there were a lot of books and multiple connecting series that followed her introduction and none of them were hers. I mean even her sister who was only barely mentioned in the series received a story! Yes, I was a very frustrated Chloe fan.

Why Chloe? As a secondary character in TO LOVE A LORD, THE LOVE OF A ROGUE and TO WOO A WIDOW, she was fully actualized. Chloe has a rabid fan base! She displayed all of the earmarks of a magnificent future heroine - decided opinions, a tragic and pain-filled back story, a debilitating physical ailment that she never allowed to dampen her spirit - even as a young debutante. Now we see her as a near spinster of five and twenty. She is even more - more everything! Even Tennyson recognizes her awesomeness!

"Warning bells went off. Leave. She’s too clever to ever be your wife." Tennyson, you are indeed a perceptive man.

This book featured the longest and most involved storyline to date in the annals of the Caldwell universe. Despite its length, the plot demanded the detail and honestly, the story could have been longer. These two protagonists, damaged from infancy, would have, out of necessity, demanded a thorough treatment of their story.

Side Note: The name "Tennyson" is such a byword for "debaucher of innocents" in #CaldWorld, it was noted that throughout the text rather than referring to him by his proper title and form of address "Lord Tennyson," he is constantly referred to incorrectly as "Lord Leo" or "Lord Leopold" instead. Did the author have trouble reconciling this subconsciously, as well? Hmmmm....

In conclusion, it was a wonderful story. Since Caldwell redeemed Rutland way back when, I've never doubted her ability to redeem an antagonist. I may cherish my grudges, but I never doubt the skill set of this author to make me believe in redemption.

The Lady Who Loved Him by Christi Caldwell is Book Two in The Brethren Series. This is the story of Lady Chloe Edgerton and Leopold Dunlop, The Marquess of Tennyson. I have read the previous book 'The Spy Who Seduced Her' (and Loved It!) but feel this can be a standalone book.
Leo was once a boy that loved to read but he was also one that was abused by his father. His Uncle who is the Duke of Aubrey picked him to be a part of The Brethren group. There, Leo learned to flush out traitors and help with uncovering crimes against the Crown. Leo adjusted to his new role by becoming a 'Cold Callous Ruthless Bastard' that fit the need The Brethren needed. But now the Brethren members feels he has taken it to far. One member named Rowley, has spoken to say that Leo has one last chance to stay apart of the team. Leo is instructed that if even a false rumor is said about him that he will loose his position with the group. Although his Uncle has taken up for Leo he even says that Leo has taken his persona to far. Leo, doesn't want to loose his place in the group because in his mind it saved him from his father.
Chloe was raised by a very abusive father who hurt her mother and siblings. They lived in terror although their father is now dead, the memories are still with Chloe. Chloe has no plans to ever marry, and has been good about side stepping her marriage minded mother and brother. So much so that Chloe is now 25 years old and only wanting independence.
But when a compromising position between Chloe and Leo happens... it leads them into a marriage of convenience. Both thinking to go forward as they had planned with their lives before marriage start finding it hard to do so. Their feelings are starting to grow between the two.
I absolutely loved this book! I highly recommend Mr. Caldwell's writing...her books make you feel what the characters are going through. It books you cannot put down until you know their ending.

When an author can take a much hated character and turn him into a beloved hero, that author has done her job and much more. Such is the case with Christi Caldwell in her latest magnificent read, THE LADY WHO LOVED HIM. In addition to that revelation, Ms. Caldwell has united a hero and heroine who normally would have been mismatched to most, but fit together like puzzle pieces in the grand scheme of things.

Leo Dunlop, the Marquess of Tennyson, has a past that makes most gasp. The self proclaimed rake and philanderer has much to account for. His secrets keep him at arms length from many and he prefers it this way.

Lady Chloe Edgerton has only ever wanted to be self sufficient. Her sad past has given her an understanding that not everything has a happily ever after, especially where men are concerned. Her dreams of becoming a headmistress of a school for girls keeps her hopes up, but when Leo bounds into her life, all bets are off.

THE LADY WHO LOVED HIM by Christi Caldwell is a finely spun web of romance, understanding and adventure. Chloe and Leo's story is one to be savored and remembered. It's a tale of redemption and renewal that I highly recommend to anyone and everyone who understand that a true happily ever after is a journey of ups and downs. Bravo to Christ Caldwell for making my heart happy, even if there were tears along the way.

Holy crap! Only Christi Caldwell can take a rake/rogue/scoundrel (all rolled into one) with the blackest of hearts and show that there is more to him than meets the eye.

Leo Dunlap, Marquess of Tennyson, is one of the blackest hearted males that I’ve ever read. The things this man has done…wicked indeed. So how can one that so far gone be redeemed? In the very talented hands of Ms. Caldwell and with the love of one very special lady, Chloe Edgerton, a lady who has been through her own special hell.

Each revelation peels away a layer giving insight into the forces that formed Leo’s life while shedding light into the horrors Chloe has herself suffered.

A beautiful story of how events can shape one’s life and how they can choose to drown in them or find a way forward and survive.

A 10+ star read that I have to say is probably my most favorite of Ms. Caldwell’s books.

Leo rubbed uselessly at the ache in his chest. He’d believed himself heartless, only to find out that he very much did possess that dangerous organ and that it beat for his wife.
Reread this book for a second time and it definitely holds up to my memory of loving it. Both the hero and the heroine evoked really strong emotions in me and drew me in.

Leo Dunlop, the Marquess of Tennyson (30) has sacrificed everything for the last 12 years to the Brethren, and now it's like he's being punished for it. The role he was put to play for this secret spy ring was that of a dissolute rake who whores and gambles, never thinks of others, etc. He pulled it off successfully, and all of society thinks him amoral and vile. This has taken a toll on him emotionally, because over time, he has started to almost adopt the role—how can you do this for so long, 24/7, without not becoming the cold, uncaring, unfeeling bastard everyone thinks you to be? He has done all this for the Brethren, and now he's being told that he's TOO over-the-top? That he has crossed TOO many lines TOO many times? The idea that he could be kicked out of the Brethren devastates him; it's all he has, all he clings to, what defines his existence—and they're threatening to take it all away, because he did his job too well. My heart broke for him and the situation he was put in. You can feel his devastation, fear, and pain so vividly.

Lady Chloe Edgerton (25) also evoked strong emotions in me. She has been through seven Seasons and remained determined throughout to never marry. Though over time she has seen her siblings and best friend find healthy and successful relationships, her longterm abuse at the hands of her violent father, and the example he set for their home life, left an indelible impression. She never wants to be subject to any man's control and even now, though her father is long dead and she's surrounded by a loving family, she feels stifled. Her oldest brother is still trying to arrange her life for her, she is dependent on others, and all she wants is her freedom and the chance to make her own decisions about her life. Chloe went through really horrible experiences and was also sometimes not protected from her father by her family, but she has emerged with a strong sense of self and I had such admiration for her. With her, what you feel so vividly is her desire—no, essential need—to determine her own destiny and have her independence, but it seems like this will be forever unattainable and she will always be trapped by other's expectations and financial and emotional power.

BRIEF SUMMARY. A chance encounter brings these two together and a marriage to avoid scandal becomes necessary. For Leo, it will help buy him some time to become the respectable man the Brethren are now insisting he portray, and for Chloe, she has found in Leo a partner who will let her do what she wants and won't have any expectations of her, and thus the closest thing to freedom and self-determination she will be able to get.

They both come to the relationship with secrets, having suffered through horrible childhoods, being guarded with others, and determined to never rely on anyone else; they are pieces to the same puzzle and Chloe is definitely the one prompting the wall-breakdowns, but it's a battle for both of them. In some ways they're the same, in others they're ying-yang: Chloe has a loving support system, but longs for independence; Leo is almost all alone, and about to be cut off and left adrift from the one thing that he feels connected to. They provide each other both the safety net and the room to grow that is needed.

The book has a mystery subplot that's a good story driver, but a lot of the development is character-driven and feels very authentic, not forced.

PART OF A SERIES. I read the first book before rereading this book the second time, but it can be read alone—didn't at all affect my enjoyment of the book the first time. Note that although Caldwell is a series-writer, there is even overlap between series (ex: Chloe's siblings' romances are featured in Caldwell's Heart of a Duke series). Tennyson appears only briefly a few times in Book 1, but plays a big (kind-of-bad-guy) role in two other romance books (from what I can gather in this one), both of which are part of her Heart of a Duke series. I feel like it's kind of a forever web, so that if you wanted to really be clued into everything, you would need to read every series she's ever written in order of publication (and obviously the books within the series in order as well).

SOME QUOTES & EXCERPTS.
About Chloe:
To Chloe, the only end that might bring her happiness was one free of a husband who’d have complete and total control of her life. Chloe turned her palms up, willing him to see. “You have taken it into your head that your responsibility for me can only be complete when I marry. But I do not want to be your responsibility.” She looked to Jane. “Or yours. Or anyone else’s.” She hungered for control of her own existence.

About Leo:
Yes, there had been a time when he was scared and crying and sniveling. No longer ... and never again. He owed the Brethren, and the organization had his fealty until he kicked up his heels and went on to spend eternity writhing in hell.

Leo's throat closed tightly as he struggled to breathe.
What am I without the Brethren? He was nothing. He was every last useless rake who'd die one day from too much drink, or with a bullet in his head from some irate husband.

Enjoy:
His butler cleared his throat. “Her ladyship has a visitor.”

He removed his cloak and handed it off. “The brother?”

Tomlinson gave a jerky nod. “He arrived almost an hour ago. They’ve been meeting in the Silver Parlor.”

Bollocks. He glanced in the direction of the hall leading to that room. Leo had miscalculated the speed with which Waverly would return and seek out Chloe. No doubt to try to end the brand-new marriage. “I trust you’ve listened in?”

“Of course,” Tomlinson said, as if it were the most common thing in the world for an employer to expect his servants to eavesdrop on private discussions. “The gentleman has spent the better part of his visit disparaging you,” he shared in his clipped and proper tones.

“That is hardly surprising.” Leo had come to expect nothing less. His butler had always been too loyal.

The older servant inclined his head. “Her ladyship has launched an admirable defense.”

“A defense?” He cocked his head. “Of who?”

Tomlinson’s lips twitched in the faintest whisper of amusement. “Of you, my lord.”

No one is the villain of their own story.
Regular readers of the CaldWorld universe already love Lady Chloe and already hate Lord Tennyson, so we knew this would be a romance for the ages. Even knowing this, I feel as though I underestimated this story.

I had absolutely no reservations about trusting Christi to reform Leo. No one can take a hardened rake, give him a tortured back story, make you fall in love with him, and completely reform him like Christi can. I have a new favorite Caldwell hero.

I have been longing for Chloe’s story since 2015. No one deserves a happily ever after more than she does. That being said, I also dreaded it. I did not believe anyone was worthy of her. I was close to right, no one else would have been good enough for her.

These two tortured souls, more similar than anyone could ever guess, finally come together in this absolutely captivating story filled with surprise and danger. The cameos in this book were everything I had hoped for. My favorites were (as always) Faith and Violet. I love those precocious little darlings.

Lord Tennyson-A Rogue who has made all the wrong decisions and Lady Chloe-A women who is trying to find her own happiness away from her overbearing have their happily ever after.

Caldworld fans have been anticipating this story for a very long time. We first met Chloe many books ago as the sweet, stubborn, sister who wanted her siblings and friend happy and who would do anything for them. Slightly after meeting Chloe we met Tennyson, the a horrible rogue who lived for himself and only himself. He did what he wanted and didn't care who was hurt in the process.

Though I knew Tennyson was the worst kind of rogue, he didn't have to work to hard for me to call him redeemed. Chapter through chapter we see how these two lost souls slowly become friends and then lovers. Christi was able to redeem him like a slow cooked roast. Chloe was the perfect match. She stood up to him and accepted his imperfections and mistakes.

I loved the cameos by past characters. They were both endearing and annoying at the same time. I can't wait to read her next book, she never leaves me disappointed.

I started this book with serious reservations about the pairing of reader favourite Chloe Edgerton and the Rake we all love to hate, The Marquess of Tennyson. It took less than three chapters for me to start to form an understanding of Leo and why he is the way he is. I loved his relationships with his aunt and uncle, and the development of his relationship with Chloe. I also loved his interactions with Chloe’s nieces.

This book is definitely deserving of a spot in my top three favourites from this author - ironically alongside the stories of Tennyson’s former friend, now enemy, Montfort, and Montfort’s brother-in-law, Rhys.

Amazing writing, as always.

The story of Chloe and Leo was raw and deep with emotions that touched your heart in every way. Chloe was strong and held true to her spirit after marrying Tennyson the ton's most notorious rake. After meeting Tennyson in previous books I felt impossible to see him in any other light. Each of them suffering and yet becoming stronger beautiful story of passion, intrigue and the testament of trust. Beautifully written with tremedous tenderness and triumph.

The Lady Who Loved Him is a well thought out story of the Cato Conspiracy which is a true plot to overthrow the British Crown. However our H/H of the story are fictional. Leo Dunlop is the Marquess of Tennyson and undercover agent for The Brethren a group of secret agents to the Crown. Leo is caught in a compromising position with Lady Chloe Edgerton age 25 a spinster. Chloe is really a true heroin intelligent beautiful and non compromising in her beliefs. She is a strong advocate of women's rights, which are unheard of in 1821. She is well written. But I am just tired of the Spinster scenario. Young Women of this era were married very young. So why not go with the truth? and write younger heroines of the times instead of spinster to help placate modern day sensibilities. Most people who read know that women were married off as early as 15 and to make it to 25 without getting married would be like a 50 year old virgin in our times. I guess I am just sick of the Spinster!!! The other problem I had with the story was the fact that Chloe and all her siblings had been so horribly beaten with canes and fist by there Marquess father. I am sure things like this happen but I don't care to read how a 4 year old girl was beaten with fist by her father for entering is library. Its puts a real damper on what is suppose to be a romance story!! Bothe Chloe and Leo were abused physically and mentally by there Marquess fathers. I read HR to escape what is happening in the real world and not too read about it in my fantasy world of books.

This is a pretty clean romance the husband wife get married in the beginning of the story but don't make love until the very ending of the story. I like a little more sensuality and sexual heat in my Romance stories.

Overall I am giving it 4 stars because the storyline works and I really like Chloe and Leo. They were perfect H/H

I love a good tortured hero story. Someone who’s suffered so much emotionally and often physically that it has affected his whole life. Sometimes those characters are brooding and at other times they hide behind a carefully constructed façade that only the love of a strong woman can break down. But what happens when that woman has also suffered a horrid past? Can two wounded people find healing in each other? Or are some pasts too life altering to escape? In Christi Caldwell’s The Lady Who Loved Him, Leo and Chloe are two such characters. The “unlikeliest pair of like souls”.

Lady Chloe Edgerton longed to control her own life. After the death of her father, she’d gone to live with her brother Gabriel. She’d escaped the cruel prison of her home where she’d suffered unbearable tortures. Her brother was kind and loving and his home was safe but it was still a prison. Chloe still had no power over her life. She had no plans to marry and didn’t want to be dependent on her family. That’s why Chloe longed to run her sister- in- law’s school for illegitimate girls. There she would have freedom and security. Where no man would make choices for her. But even that was to be denied her. Society dictated that marriage meant respectability. No unwed woman could be headmistress of a school.
Leopold Dunlop, Marquess of Tennyson, had played the rake so long for the crown that he’d become one. At 18, his uncle had ushered him into The Brethren, sparing him from his father’s abuse. He’d been ordered to transform from the weak scholar he’d been into a hardened rake. And he’d resolved to be the best at it. He was so good at it in fact that the home office felt his recklessness was a detriment to the organization. He’d become a wastrel unfit to do the work of The Brethren and unfit to move among polite society. His days with The Brethren were numbered. If he didn’t change his ways and become respectable, the career that had been his life would be over.
Leo had been ordered to be respectable and had failed in less than 12 hours of being given the command. He’d been discovered in a compromising situation with Lady Chloe Edgerton. Nothing untoward had happened, yet the world saw nothing more than surface and appearances mattered most. An offer of marriage was expected. Now Leo faced a new ultimatum. Either leave The Brethren or convince the world he’s madly in love with the woman he ruined. Leo had “established a life for himself these past 12 years and he’d be damned if he sacrificed it for anyone- particularly a woman”. Marrying was the last thing he wanted, but as a respectable lord, he could infiltrate until now unreachable circles of society.
For Chloe, the scandal had destroyed any possible hope for a position at her sister-in-law’s school or anywhere. When her father died, she’d vowed to never again be under any man’s control. But an unwed lady was powerless. Perhaps a formal agreement where they were joined for their own self- interests would work. “If she could turn society’s most heartless cad into a proper and respectable gentleman, any post would be open to her.
What a story! Ms. Caldwell had me on a rollercoaster of emotions with this one. One minute I was angry, then teary eyed, and then I was chuckling. Leo has to be the “rakiest” rake I’ve ever come across. I wasn’t sure he could be redeemed. But I discovered little things about him right along with Chloe. And before I knew it, I was in love.
Leo had been told so often by his father that he was worthless that I think he believed it. He’d thrown himself completely into his role with The Brethren, the role of “a bounder rumored to be a debaucher of innocents and one who drank too much, wagered often, and whored even more”. He’d worked so hard to present that façade to the world that he’d lost himself in the process. Society’s reaction to him didn’t faze him. He’d been called every name in the book so much that it ceased to matter to him. And then he met Chloe.
She was a spitfire. She had spirit and resolve and went toe to toe with him. She didn’t look down at him. She made light of him where others spoke harshly or ignored him. Verbal sparring with her was fun. More fun than he’d had in years. He enjoyed being something other than a scoundrel with her. But he didn’t know how to respond to her kindness. Didn’t know how to be respectable. The feelings he was having were foreign to him. He’d prided himself on being fearless. He’d faced danger and death, but the way his wife made him feel scared him. He was determined not to let her see him as anything other than the man he presented to the world. But Chloe was too clever. She seemed to see through his façade. If he weren’t careful, she could unearth the dangerous secrets he kept from all outside The Brethren.
I was already in love with Chloe after reading To Love a Lord. She was so clever, brave, and spirited. In spite of all she’d suffered at the hands of her father, she still looked for the good in people and was a notorious matchmaker. She looked deeper at people than society did and that’s how she knew there was more to Leo than the man society saw. She knew he lashed out and put up walls because he didn’t want to reveal parts of himself. But she pushed right through those walls. Though battling her own demons, she strove to help Leo face his. “Even when afraid, where others might cower, she cloaked herself in pride and courage.” She knew if she wanted Leo to reveal all to her, she must be willing to do the same.
Leo and Chloe were so perfectly matched because they could understand what had shaped each other. Both had endured notoriously cruel fathers and both were haunted by those memories. Both cared little for society’s opinions. Both shared a loathing of marriage because they thought it would make them weak and powerless. And once they kissed, both were unable to think about anything but each other.
This was such a beautiful story. As I said before, I experienced so many different emotions. I laughed out loud when Leo was attempting to propose and throughout the whole marriage contract that followed. My heart broke for him when I learned about his childhood. And it broke for Chloe too to see how her childhood suffering continued to haunt her still. Chloe and Leo touched my heart. Though they endured tortured pasts and all odds were against them, they rose to conquer, to feel worthy of love, and to give their heart in return. Christi Caldwell is at the top of her game with this story. She drew me in quickly with this touching romance. Her brilliance at slowly revealing her character’s backstories really shone through and I loved the darker elements at play. This was a story so vividly written that I’ll be picturing these characters and scenes for months to come. A Book Obsessed Chicks Review Team Selection

This book is AWESOME! ❤️📚❤️
Christi Caldwell’s writing is outstanding in The Lady Who Loved Him.

Leo Dunlop, the Marquess of Tennyson, is a hardened, cold-hearted rake, who lives only for his work in the spy network, the Brethren. His reputation, established 12 years earlier to serve him as an agent of the Crown, has become so reckless and depraved, that his superiors, now thinking it will affect his role within the organization, have threatened to cut him if he doesn’t change.

Lady Chloe Edgerton, now in her sixth London Season, is tired of having no say in her life. She grew up under the control and fear of a drunken and abusive father, and since her evil sire’s death, she has been smothered by her controlling siblings and mother planning her future. Worried that a husband would only continue that control over her, Chloe is determined to never marry. She dreams of a future where only she controls her life.

When Chloe injures her ankle at a soirée, and Tennyson attempts to help her, they end up in a scandalous and compromising situation. He has pledged never to love, she has pledged never to marry. But... maybe there is a path that can benefit both. And this is where the real story begins!

This storyline was unexpected, amazing, and so well written. Having met Tennyson and Chloe in past books, the question was “how will this writer ever bring together this cold, cruel rake and this sweet, strong-willed lady?” It was brilliant the way Caldwell presented the “true” Leo, so believable and convincing to the reader. And it was wonderful to see the full story of the strong individual Chloe is, and the power she, as a woman, had over Leo.

The book also treated us to many of our favorite family and friends from other series of this author. Two very special mentions are little Faith and Violet. These wee ones can add so much to a story when included in just the right scenes.

This book is a huge testament to the amazing talent of Christi Caldwell. It can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone, but readers may want to also check out other books containing the supporting characters within this story. A must read!!!

Love it

The Brethren series is, to me, the stories of people separated from their true selves, by their loyalty to the crown. These men and women risked all, to ensure the crown remained stable. Sometimes losing themselves in the process. Tennyson is such a man. Destroyed by his father from his birth, he became everything his father told him he was, for Brethren and the Crown. I hated him in previous books he appeared in, never imagining Christi Caldwell saw more to him and why he did what he did. I did not want him for our beloved Chloe Edgerton, a heroine we begged for a HEA. But Christi, in her wisdom, paired these two wounded souls and I am humbled at their story. This is a must read for any Christi Caldwell fan. If you haven’t read her yet, start now! Thank you Christi, for explaining Leo and Chloe in such a beautiful way.

Since I'm new to this author and haven't read the first book, I didn't know who the characters were. That means that the redeeming an antihero part, didn't mean much to me.

I love the marriage of convenience trope but only when it's done well. I prefer slow burns but in this case I didn't get it. Like most of the time, the hero went from thinking very little of the heroine, to suddenly loving her with his whole soul, but of course, he had to push her away.

I enjoyed the book, but I just didn't connect with the characters. So I'll keep an eye on this author, to see if I can find a favourite in one of her other series!

And Brethren's next top guy!

Another marvelous tale from the CaldWorld. Tennyson - The rake with no morals! The very one all of Christis fans love to hate. Chloe - The indomitable braveheart. The heartthrob whose HEA we've waited for three years now.

A desperate heroine escaping her well meaning but overbearing guardian runs into the desperate rake facing the wrath of his uncle who's tired of his exploits. The only thing he's ever cared about is at risk and he can't risk another scandal to his name.

How these two find their HEA and all the darkest secrets and hopes they harbour is this tale.

Pick it up you won't regret it.

This was a pretty long book but overall, it was a good story. Leo and Chloe were both really likeable characters. AND it’s always nice to have some mystery and drama in a story, that has nothing to do with the romance. I always like books that have to do with the Home Office.

There was graphic sex in this, and the F-bomb was used 6 times.

As to the narration: Can you get any better than Tim Campbell?

I have been waiting for Leo and Chloe's story for forever. Christi Caldwell has done a fantastic job of showing us why Leo Dunlop is the way he is.

I cried, I laughed, I got angry. I just don't have the words to describe how awesome this book is. Please, go out and get this book.

Oh man, this book was excellent!
My only complaint, as always with Christi Caldwell, is that I wish it was longer. There is something to be said for characters experiencing a trauma or sharing their trauma and then processing through the fallout of that. In Caldwell's stories we learn about the past trauma, we reach the climax where the character fully reveals their trauma to their love interest, and then... the book ends.
I loved being able to see Leo be redeemed from his absolutely terrible character in To Redeem A Rake, but his relationship with the Earl of Montfort and Daphne is another thing I'd like to have seen resolution in, and it just didn't happen. In the end, the only person who knows Leo is a good man is Chloe, and that is really unsatisfying.

The tension between the characters, and their process of falling for each other was very sweet. Overall, a good read!

The Brethren Series has always held a special place in my heart, the original book My Lady Of Deception (Brethren of the Lords ) was the first I read of Christi’s , and got me hooked on her books.
Since then she has never disappointed me in anything she has written.
A magician with words, she weaves tails, and invites you in,to live and breath her world.
I adore these characters.
Chloe we’ve seen grow from a fierce and determined young girl to a beautiful and feisty young woman , all the time dealing with the events of her past , a violent father and a mother who never protected her from him .
Leo is an agent of the Brethren, his life set into motion by a father who never wanted him , who insulted and belittled him for being studious.
The two embark on a life together fraught with problems and unrest , especially from her family , trust is a major issue .
The fact that Leo is an unapologetic rake doesn’t help matters , but Chloe is a kind and considerate partner ,and soon they both begin to thaw, and deal with their shared pain .
This is an exceptional book , written with thought and consideration for the characters pasts and their families trying to deal with all the baggage.
Its wonderfully thought out , and if you’ve read the Heart Of a Duke series you will be able to trace Chloe and Leo’s characters and development from the beginning .

This is the story of two broken people who are thrown together by accident and enter into a business relationship. Through the need to show the Ton they are a respectable couple, they each find a shared scarred past and love of literature which ultimately leads to love. One of the most anticipated stories by Christi, as an avid reader of Regency romance I can say without prejudice she is the Queen of this genre, Chloe’s HEA has been a long time coming. Whether you are new to Regency or like myself a lover this story will captivate you and very unexpectedly have you loving a Rogue who all thought was unredeemable given past crimes. I laughed, cried and cheered. I can not recommend this book enough.

DYNAMITE!

A wonderful rendition of an exciting trope - secret agent trying to save, oh, whoever. Along the way, the agent gets caught with a member of the opposite sex, and from there, the plots spiral until the villains try to kill the hero/heroine, there is a bit of high suspense, and the believability of the whole thing hangs as dependent on the strength of the characters, and the author.
I sat, entranced, with Chloe, in his parlor, wondering indeed, why did he retain an expensive sculpture if he was broke.. I wandered with her through his house, and I sat with him as he realized he loved her.
An author is taxed with sending us to other worlds, and letting us feel for others.
Christi Caldwell shines.

Wow. Just... Wow 😳
This was.. It gave me Everything! Such a wonderful story, lots of secrets, banter, hurt and betrayl.
Christ is a master. A true queen in what she does. The level and layers of dept she puts into her characters, crafting familys that seem real - it is what makes her books SO superior, compared to other authors.
Even when she's bad, she's good. And when she is good.. oh dear lord 😳 She is amazing!

I cannot recommend this enough.

3.5 stars. This book did what I wanted it to do: explain in an acceptable way what Leo did to Daphne, which came up in the book I read about Daphne a few days ago.

Other than that, it had some good messages about how no one is all one thing. It was pretty forgettable, though.

I can always count on Caldwell to give me a well written, entertaining story. No major theatrics, no unnecessary drama, just good characters who were fun to read about. Romance, mystery, and emotional backstories, all in a great read that hit all the spots I was in the mood for.

Can be read as a stand-alone but you have other characters/couples from other books joining in.

Finally a happily ever after for Chloe! This was a great story and it was nice to get to know her as a main character. The hero was awesome, and he is worthy of our girl.

I'VE BEEN ON A READING HIATUS FOR MONTHS, AND IT'S NICE TO COME BACK WITH A REVIEW
ON ONE OF MY GO-TO AUTHORS.

THIS ONE WHILE WASN'T BOMBASTIC, WAS A COMFORTABLE FAMILIAR ROMANCE.
CHARACTERS WERE QUITE WELL DEVELOPED AND THE ROMANCE WAS SWEET.

OUR HERO was once upon a time a Bookworm, a Dreamer and a bit of a Romantic until his abusive father squelches his dreams and oppresses his personality. Growing up bitter and having hurt his first love in order to protect her, Leo has grown into a man that the Brethen requires him to be. A degenerate, cold-hearted and quite selfish. Alas, comes the final straw where his behaviour has gotten him into trouble and he's about to be kicked out of the Brethen unless he shows some form of remorse and penance. Who knew that within the few hours he's been given ONE last chance, he stumbles into another kind of trouble that involves an innocent woman, although their meeting was rather that - innocent. However, having been caught alone...you know the drill back in the old days. To save his hanging reputation with the Brethen, the only thing that gets him going life...he's going to do the one thing he thought never to do - GET MARRIED. Despite all the rumours and gossip about him, from the beginning...I never thought of Leo as a bad man. Maybe because we get to read his inner thoughts. Yes, he's a rake but that's pretty much it. From hence on, Leo's character changes and mellows down in a good way when Chloe stumbles into his life. Everyday becomes something new and he experiences new emotions that warms his heart. I rather liked Leo, he's charming in his own right and also attentive and caring towards the woman he didn't want in his life.

OUR HEROINE was more persistent than most I've read in terms of wanting control of her own life. If you've read Gabriel or Alex's story then you will already know the abuse they suffered under the late Marquess of Waverly. Having been traumatised since 4 years old, Chloe takes the brunt of it and developed VERY VERY strong opinions about men and marriage. When her attempt to fulfill the position of headmistress at Mrs. Munroe's was rejected, she never expected that life will take a different turn of events with Leo's existence in her life. When they struck up a marriage agreement, begins their married life and despite the 'NO TALKING ABOUT PRIVATE MATTERS'...I enjoyed every conversation Chloe and Leo shared because it helped them form a closer bond and no matter how each denies it, they were already falling in love.

OVERALL if you're looking for a definitive HEA and characters that won't make you want to tear your hair out, then this will be great for you. Don't expect steamy scenes, or plentiful kisses because they were less than a handful here. This story is more focused on the emotional aspect and character growth but still full of sweet, caring romance.

Both Chloe and Leo were supporting characters in "The Heart of a Duke " series and several of those characters also appear in this novel. Alex, Imogen , jane etc.
This book was a decent read and I did not skip pages (hence 3 stars) . It did not receive 4 stars because it is doubtful if I would reread it.
The story was just missing something.. The character development was somewhat lackluster and if you have not read their other respective books, the reader would be unaware of how wonderful Chloe really is.
Also the scandal that follows Leo around due to "Heart of a Duke 11" "To redeem a Rake" was barely mentioned or explored. I found it hard to believe that Chloe whom family is friends with the main characters in that book would have no knowledge of what happened nor would her family make mention when they expressed their distaste for her marriage. I thought Leo's explanation and role in it was quickly glossed over in 2 paragraphs.
Quick synopsis- Leo's father was horrid to him and his uncle (the current spymaster) recruited him into the Brethren as a way to remove him from his father. He turns into a rake, gambler and womanizer. He attends a ball to ferret out information and meets Chloe whom sprains her ankle at the ball. Leo has been told in no uncertain term that if he causes one more scandal he will be kicked from the spy agency. Of course, 12 hours later he is caught alone in a room with Chloe when he tries to help her with her ankle and fearing being dismissed from the agency he proposes. Chloe does not want to marry, yet wants to be the headmistress of the school that jane (Heart of a Duke) runs and has been told that in order to become headmistress she must be married. So of course she takes Leo up on the offer.
