After a 23-year AF career, Colonel Merline Lovelace launched a second career as a writer, basing many of her tales on her own experiences in uniform and on her travels all around the globe.
The USA Today best-selling author now has more than 11 million copies of her books in print. Her works have won numerous awards, including the Romance Writers of America's prestigious RITA. Merline is especially proud to have been named the University of Oklahoma's Writer of the Year and the Oklahoma Female Veteran of the Year.
"Holiday With a Vampire" is a quick twofer read from Silhouette Nocturne.
"A Christmas Kiss" by Merline Lovelace. Brett is on his way home when woman suddenly appears in front of his vehicle. After skidding off the road to avoid her, he's pretty unhappy when she appears to be a drunk. She's really a vampire who's a bit loopy from whatever the dentist gave her trying to fix a chipped canine tooth. ***A little disappointing as I felt a bit 'left hanging' wondering about her 'savage' boss. Otherwise, not too bad.
"The Vampire Who Stole Christmas" by Lori Devoti. She's an angel, he's a vampire. Don't know where this match was made, but likely not in heaven. ***A little 'heavy' for a Christmas read, but also quick enough I didn't feel 'preached' to.
A Christmas Kiss by Merline Lovelace - 2 stars I realize it is a short story, but was very formulaic. Vampire drugged up, goes home with cop. Circumstances force her to stay an extra day and somehow in that time even though they barely talk, they're in "forever" love. Didn't really care about the characters as I knew barely anything about them. The only interesting part of the story was with Sebastian and that got majorly short-changed.
The Vampire Who Stole Christmas by Lori Devoti - 3 stars Interesting characters and story. Had some sad parts. The idea of a daimon was different. Enjoyable.
it was awesome ive it a few times this year but im only counting it once cause that seems cheating to me if i claim it more will have to get the rest of the series cause this was another i couldnt put down i read it in a day
These were really sexy treats, but pretty low on plot and character development, definitely closer to erotica than romance, which I was looking for. In the first story, a disorientated vampire has a run in with a sexy cop. Quickly fireworks fly and explanations ensue when he discovers she's a vampire. Unfortunately, the story cuts off right after he transforms-there's a vampire world that's explained but never explored. In the second story, Aimee is an angel who is supposed to marry a politician, ends up in bed with a vampire! The plot in the second was convoluted; Aimee's origins are not super clear and the vampire's entanglement with Aimee's fiancee's family is not explained well. However, the sex scenes are sizzling. I was not a fan of branding it as a "holiday" romance--vampires and Christmas don't mix well. Branding it as "winter" would have been way sexier. If you are looking for a more erotic read, then this is for you! (less)

A Christmas Kiss (Lovelace) tells of the meeting between an Oklahoma State Trooper, Brett Cooper, and a vampire, Delilah Wentworth, in an incapacitated state from a dental numbing. She looks spaced out, without a car, in the middle of nowhere. There is a killer on the loose and he takes her home with him for her own protection. This was just weak; all the plot devices too obvious. The Vampire Who Stole Christmas (Devoti) tells of a daemon, Aimee Polk, who meets up with vampire, Drystan Hurst. He is out for revenge against his adoptive family and she is about to marry into that family. She feels she is a failure for having lost her last assignment to his dark side and is trying to become human. He sees his dark side as fated because of the abandonment by his family. Too much psychobabble and implausible paranormal elements. Don’t know what the title signifies.
Overall review: I undestand the draw, the appeal, the desire for the dark vampire. The whole 'I can be the savior' role. But does the eternal love have to happen in 3 days? There is no real emotional attachment after 3 days. There is physical attraction and need but can we be a little more realistic? Just a smidge?
A Christmass Kiss - Merline Lovelace Interesting idea. Vamp girl duty bound to do her sires will but finds herself morally obligated to aide mortals and makes this her priority. 2 1/2 stars
The Vampire Who Stole Chirstmas - Lori Devoti Vampire finds himslef drawn to a mortal he intends to use as a means of revenge. She turns out to be as other worldly as he is. 3 stars.
This anthology features a story by one of my favorite Nocturne authors, Lori Devoti. In a departure from her other Nocturnes, this one is about a vampire, not shape-shifters. Though this is a Christmas anthology, the holiday has very little presence. If you’re looking for a book that’s doesn’t have all the trimmings (carols, gifts, decorating, etc.), then this book is a good choice.
This book must've run short on word counts since the font was rather large as were the margins. Not that I'm complaining since that made it easier for me to read! LOL
I liked both stories in this one. Two different takes on vampires while still sticking tot he basic assumed rules of vampire romances.
I also had this one in print and eBook so I went back and forth between the two as needed, which was nice. However, most of it was read in print. It wasn't until the book was almost finished (and I was no longer on vacation) that I started going back and forth between the two formats.
A Christmas Kiss by Merline Lovelace - 2 stars. Too short for any time of character development. I wasn't emotionally invested in the characters or the story. Just not for me.
The Vampire Who Stole Christmas by Lori Devoti - 1 star. Again, I couldn't get attached to either character. Writing felt very, very awkward.
Both stories felt like the authors were "vampire romance amateurs" and really didn't know how to write about them.
