When a giant monster attacks his school, orphan Nagare Ryoma finds he has a connection with a giant mecha, Getter Robo! But what is the Getter Robo and who are the other Robo pilots?

Fuck. Yeah. This is more like it! My manga self-education has been a little slow going so far but this was exactly the jolt I needed.

Getter Robo Devolution has everything I was looking for in a manga series: violence, giant robots, and giant monsters, with a side of angst. I was pulled right in during the opening, with orphan Nagare Ryoma's classmates revealing his tormented past and hassling his friend Michiru. The monster attack and the ensuing gore is what really set the hook.

The story is in its infancy in this volume but I'm in for the long haul. The conflicting personalities between the pilots and the shady motives of Saotome have lots of potential. The art is fantastic and the story moves at lightning speed while still being pretty clear.

Needless to say, Getter Robo Devolution Vol. 1 made quite an impression on me. Now I'll be needing the rest of them. Five out of five stars.

It was probably inevitable that the creative team behind the Ultraman manga would end up bringing back back another icon in rebooted form. Like the original manga, it's fairly dark with the characters not being the best of people. The art is dynamic and energetic and very fun to read.

However, my biggest problem with the beginning of this series was that it used "fridging". This is a term used primarily in american comics when a female supporting character is killed off to give the story edge and/or develop the main male character more. In this case, the character Michiru is literally torn in half in the first chapter. This is an annoying and sexist trope and I could've done without it. Especially when this character has alot of potential.

As a whole, it's a fun and interesting take on Getter and I look forward to reading more

A dark and gritty reboot of a classic series. No previous experience is required for Devolution as it starts right back at the beginning and re-introduces us to this new take on Ryoma Nagare and his comrades as they battle ungodly giant monsters in their jets that combine into various different mechs known as the "Getter Robo". I highly recommend this series to anyone looking to get in to the Getter Robo franchise as it's a good starting point, but also any fans of the mech genre or Sci-Fi in general are likely to get a kick out of reading it. Be warned though, as this series is not for the faint hearted - the heroes may have been de-aged to high schoolers to make them more relatable, but the manga is still as dark and gorey as can be as it doesn't shy away from the realities of what would happen if a monster attacked a highly populated city.
(On a side note: The subtitle of this series is "Devolution" and the synopsis on the back calls the monsters the "Devolved" but in the copy I own they are referred to as the "Un-Evolved"...Once again Seven Seas showing why they are the weakest Publisher when it comes to manga localisation, hopefully this error will be remedied in future releases.

The guys behind the 'Ultraman' manga are at it again, this time with 70's mecha show Getter Robo.

I liked 'Getter Robo Devolution', but I do admit that I'm reading it with 'Ultraman' in mind. 'Ultraman' moves painfully slowly, the plot blurs the line between reboot and outright sequel, and the Ultra designs look so much like their enemies that fights can get confusing. Right away, Getter 1 looks very different from the monsters, the story makes it clear that this is a good point of entry, and although this still has the problem of one entire volume feeling like one anime episode's worth of content, the plot clips along with an entertaining pace.

Plus, the title has the benefit of re-imagining the source material, rather than being a sequel. I'm interested in where the story itself goes, not whether this character or that is going to appear later on.

I was able to pick volume 1 up on the last day of AX at the Seven Seas booth for all of $5. If I had had to pay full price to read this title, I'd have steered clear, because of the aforementioned pacing issues in 'Ultraman'.

The creative team behind the ULTRAMAN manga take on another classic with "Getter Robo Devolution." I'm less familiar with Getter Robo than I am with Ultraman so I'm not sure how close this is to the original. We're introduced to the three pilots of the Get Machines that make up Getter Robo. The stakes are ramped up very high in the first chapter and the mastermind behind the Get Machines is certainly more morally ambiguous than in the couple episodes of the original anime that I watched. I really enjoy the ULTRAMAN manga and for a first volume "Getter Robo Devolution" was enough to keep me interested.

This volume was very much set up meeting each of the pilots and seeing their tragic backstory also I know Getter Robo came first as this is a remake of a manga from the 1970s but this felt very much like Eva. Which is hard for me to separate from since I saw Eva first. Am I going to continue reading this and get the other volumes? Probably not I think I had different expectations going into reading it

A Retelling of the 1970s Manga Getter Robo, It takes the original story and changes the formula up a bit. The art style is very different from Go Nagai's iconic style, and that's what really adds to the story. I'm interested to see where it goes this time, as all the Getter Robo stories sort of simultaneously happen but in parallel universes.

I’m not sure about this one. I need to look up whether the original was written before or after Evangelion because it’s very very similar. I’m a die hard NGE fan and I want to like this one as well but so far I’m not super hooked. We’ll see as I continue to read the series.
