Scorpio Richelle Mead is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of urban fantasy books for both adults and teens. Originally from Michigan, Richelle now lives in Seattle, Washington where she works on her three series full-time: Georgina Kincaid, Dark Swan, and Vampire Academy.
A life-long reader, Richelle has always loved mythology and folklore. When she can actually tear herself away from books (either reading or writing them), she enjoys bad reality TV, traveling, trying interesting cocktails, and shopping for dresses. She's a self-professed coffee addict and has a passion for all things wacky and humorous.
I did not enjoy this series, so it would kill me to do a book by book review.
It’s clearly a spin-off series because there was little character development, not much a developed storyline and no gripping suspense throughout at all. I feel like the series was writing purely for monetary gain on the back of Vampire Academy series success. There were a lot of useless pages and the ink on those pages was a waste of the earth’s resources. The whole series could easily have been done in 3-4 books, but where’s the extra money in that? I do not appreciate writers who waste my time – if I’m giving you hours of my life; don’t make me regret it.
The story itself was kind of boring. The tease given in The Vampire Academy made me think something great was on its way, and in the end, I felt the storyline was rushed and far too predictable. Meade didn’t push the boundaries, she didn’t try to exceed my expectations, there were no great twists, there was no suspense and everyone got out of trouble far too easy. A major capture and rescue scene where I thought, “finally we’re getting somewhere,” was over quickly with no true excitement and left me feeling flat and disappointed. The whole series was almost little more than uninspired fan-fiction. When the author could have really made the characters into something great, she left them under developed – I’m thinking of Jill’s sudden lack of personality and Eddie badass-ery gone soft and wimpy. While there was some growth in Sydney and Adrian; it wasn’t anything special. Going from a judgey anorexic to accepting others difference and eating a burger because the hot guy tells you to, and going from a womaniser to being in a committed relationship - is not character growth.
I felt insulted by Meade with how little effort there was throughout.
Review of the first: I definitely liked this more than I thought, after the slog of Vampire Academy. At least partially because the whole concept of the vampire academy and the politics & structure of vampire society is...convoluted and not that interesting. But also, the characters.
Sure, Jill, Eddie, and Trey don't have enough personality to catch the reader's attention. And Adrian isn't as likable here because he's too busy being depressed and emo about stupid Rose choosing her stupid soulmate over him - but he still manages to retain a decent amount of his wit. And he's way, way better than Dimitri, who manages to be gross and boring on a consistent basis.
The biggest difference is that I don't hate Sydney, while Rose is one of the worst protagonists in YA lit - though I like to blame Dimitri for hypnotizing her with his black hole of a personality. Certainly when she hunted him and he was off-page she was tolerable. I don't think Sydney's character growth is as organic as it should be, and by no means do I love her, but I rarely find her so irritating that I wish she would go away forever and let someone else be the narrator. So there's that.
Decent plot and better pacing than VA usually was too.
Rest of the series: well, Adrian devolves a bit more with each book, but is still better than the original male lead. Sydney gets dragged down a bit more as a result since their love takes up a lot of pages despite being only sporadically interesting. And the ending is pretty blah.
This series was a little bit of a back and forth struggle for me. Vampire Academy is so near and dear to my heart. Every book in it is amazing... it’s a rollercoaster of emotions and I could never get tired of reading about Rose and Dimitri. But this series just messed with the way I saw Adrian and Sydney from VA a bit too much. They didn’t feel the same to me. It was fun and cute at times. Bloodlines, Fiery Heart and The Ruby Circle were good, kinda cute, but had some seriously boring parts. Silver Shadows was an absolute blast and I couldn’t put it down. The Golden Lily and the Indigo Spell draaaaaged so bad I almost gave up on the series. Glad I didn’t if only for Silver Shadows and knowing what ultimately happens in the end of Ruby Circle. Happy to know certain great things about Sydney and Adrian and even more so, about Rose and Dimitri! It was worth the read but I will not likely reread it and I definitely don’t plan on buying it like I plan to buy the VA series.
I know that Vampire Academy is my first choice always but what magic Bloodlines put on me I now tend to avoid the books from rereading these days! Sydney and Adrian's love story is truly much more painful than Rose and Dimitri's. Then there's Jill and Eddie and others it's just a beautiful story, action packed I loved it. I was really happy that the Alchemist shit was exposed and Adrian finally found someone who wouldn't ever leave him. I don't blame Rose, will never dare to do that because she was always meant to be with Dimitri Belikov. But Adrian was heartbroken and very drunk too. Sydney brought him back to normality, no she didn't play therapist. Please no, she's strong and stood the same the entire time. One of the main reasons I love Rose, Sydney and Jill is that they are not puppets of their boyfriend's. They took care of things mostly alone and were hella capable of it, whether they knew how to fight physically or mentally.
It wasn't bad. I actually liked the idea of an Alchemist and Vampire falling in love. But after reading "Silver Shadows", the last book "The Ruby Circle" fell flat for me. Wasn't as interesting or engaging as the previous book. Wish the ending was a bit more exciting.
4.5 stars! More Morois, Dhampirs and Alchemists! What an awesome series. I loved seeing familiar characters from the Vampire Academy series like Adrian and Sydney and also being thrust back into the familiar world of Vampire Academy. And I also enjoyed seeing the characters develop and find their true purpose. Another captivating series filled with more forbidden romance as well as friendship and edge-of-your-seat action! This was one wild ride full of drama, excitement and humor. The Bloodlines series is definitely not to be missed by fans of Vampire Academy!
Amazing series by an amazing writer. Love how it captures your attention and transports you to the scenes with great details. No series by this author has disappointed me to this day. They are great reads and rereads.
I LOVeD this series. It was such a smart spin off of the Vampire Academy series with all the same characters but just in a different POV. It starts right were we left off and keeps the story going. I wish the author would do it again with another spin off? I couldn’t get enough.
it was an amazing journey with lots of characters from the vampire academy series and a truly epic read! fantastic writing style lots of plot twists and lovable characters💖
I recommend it for everyone who loved the Vampire academy series!
