The wedding of Nurarihyon to an abducted human girl draws nigh! Half-brothers Karasu, Enju, and Hiiragi embark on a final battle to stop their father, but does their ragtag group of half-yokai hybrids really have a shot at defeating the yokai king?
In the 4th and final volume of the series we pick up after the end of volume 3 where Hiiragi has been forced to consume large amounts of yokai blood making him more monster then man. Thankfully with Karasu's knowledge and quick action Hiiragi is able to regain his humanity but as an ability vampire he will have to decide if he will continue to live his life as a human or will he have to sacrifice all he knows to save a girl he doesn't even know from marrying his father? Along with this brother Enju, Hiiragi still has hope he can convince his father about the error of his actions. What happens I leave it to you fellow readers to observe as Nurarihyon (as in the father aka cover model of this volume) decides the fate of all involved while his past catches up to him at last.
I was hoping that after the last installment, this volume would blow me away. But unfortunately I've liked each of these books less than the one before it. This book just seemed so busy and rushed, and I felt like art was really hard to read in some of the scenes. I also felt quite disconnected from the story. The other volumes I read within 4-6 weeks of each other, but I didn't pick this one up for over three months. I think I just waited too long, and was still feeling let down from volume three. I'd still recommend this series, because I think overall it's really interesting and fun, but I did start to feel like I was stuck in a Maury tv marathon that I couldn't get out of.
Mmm... so I wanted to read this for a while, and I am glad that my library had it. Here's the thing: this story just feels like it has so many things happen in such a short period of time. The text to image ratio on pages can also be a little overwhelming (something I feel like tends to be a bit common in Seven Seas manga), and the fact that this is only four volumes just makes everything happen way too fast.
I feel like if it had been allowed to develop more than the four volumes, that maybe the story would have been a bit more interesting? There is also the part of me that feels like the art (minus Karasu / Bandages) doesn't suit the story well.
It's not horrible, but it probably wouldn't be the first thing I go to recommend someone.
The three half-brothers make a last attempt to destroy their father, the King of the yokai
This series as a whole was a disappointment to me. The actual yokai rental shop idea was touched on intriguingly in the first volume and then again at the end of the this one (which is the end of the series). The majority of it was the battle with the yokai king. I feel like the author came up with three interesting characters but then didn't develop them other than to have them fight - themselves, others, and the king. I'm glad this had a happy ending, but the series as a whole will not be on my mental list of manga I like.
I have enjoyed this series so much. And this final book in the series is so amazing. The ending was so good and I'm not talking about the HEA. Everything is now out in the open as to how we got here. I had no idea where the alliance was for Enju and I love his true form! Kawado-san! Oh my God! Ha! Literally. There were hints throughout the series that he was a Kappa but . I think Karasu (Bandages) was in love with Yuzu. But the HEA was lovely. I think I will look into their other books.
This was an unexpected hit for me! (I thought Nightmare Inspector would remain my favorite by this author, but it's definitely been knocked down a peg.)
I was delighted to finally figure out the connection between Karasu and Hiiragi's mother (Yuzu) and OMG, they were besties. That's so stinking adorable! Kawado was amazing too and I was not disappointed by the reveal of what he really was. The final showdown with Nurarihyon was perfect (as was his punishment)!
The final chapter gave everyone a well-deserved happy ending. Everything about this series was perfect for me. I loved it from start to finish. 5/5
I’m sad this series had to end so soon. There was so much potential to see more character development and a more in-depth look at the Yokai. This was a great series full of fun adventures and fascinating characters whose allegiances and personalities changed constantly as they encountered new systems of power. This was a series about transformation and the power of new knowledge to change who we are and how we understand ourselves.
I think the best I can give this is 2.5 stars. I don't know if it has just been too long since I read the other three volumes and I'm just unused to the pacing of the volumes before this or if this volume really just was as rushed as it seems. I just feel that this volume fell short of the others and was a very unsatisfying ending.
