I walked into Barnes and Noble one night in need of some cheering. I had it in mind to pick up a Christmas book, since I love snow and winter so much. For some reason I was drawn like a magnet to this book! I just had to have it! HA! Well, I've spent the past two weeks really enjoying my time with these three cheeky guardian angels and all their earthly charges. I love how DM describes heaven and the interaction between the two spheres. This book contains three separate and stand-alone stories, all about this adorable and loving angel trio. Each one was heart-warming and enjoyable, but my favorite was the second story, "Those Christmas Angels". I think I'll probably read the whole series before the Christmas season is through! It just warmed my heart and lifted my spirit. 5 stars for DM's lovely angels!

Shirley, Goodness and Mercy - “Shirley, Goodness and Mercy” is the fourth installment of Debbie Macomber’s Angels Everywhere holiday series. Unlike the three books that come before it, which each had separate storylines for our three angels, this short novella has them working together on one case. Also, unlike most of those other cases, this one doesn’t have a romantic element, which is probably for the best since the main character isn’t very likable, at least not at first. The vibe of this story reminds me of Donna VanLiere’s Christmas Hope series, and in some ways, it’s reminiscent of the first book of that series, The Christmas Shoes. Both feature a wealthy workaholic main character who has been living a rather selfish life, and both have encounters with little boys who help set them on a path to becoming better versions of themselves, leading to a heartwarming redemption.

Greg Bennett is a vintner who lost his latest crop of grapes to a virus. Without a loan, he won’t be able to replant the next year, but none of the banks in San Francisco seems willing to give him a loan. His third wife also left him, and he’s facing yet another potentially contentious divorce proceeding. Feeling frustrated with the course his life has taken, he takes a walk and ends up in a church. Though not particularly religious, he takes a seat in a pew and begins to talk to whoever might be listening, and that happens to be the archangel, Gabriel. Up in heaven, the three mischievous angels, Shirley, Goodness and Mercy, are chomping at the bit to be assigned to another case on Earth during the Christmas season, and Gabriel decides to give them Greg’s. But the heavenly messengers will have their work cut out for them, because up to this point, Greg has led a life that makes it hard for them to like the man. In college, he left the only woman he’d ever truly loved when she told him she was pregnant. Then he selfishly refused to help his best friend in the man’s most desperate hour of need, and as a result, the friend lost his wife. And when his own mother was dying, he never made it to her bedside, instead going to a divorce hearing with his second ex-wife, something for which his brother has never forgiven him. Now Greg has a lot to make up for. Much like the angels, I didn’t like Greg at first. He does show much-needed growth as the story progresses, though, and by the end, I felt more confident that he’d gotten his life on the right path.

Greg’s story also intersects with those of his son from the girlfriend he left, his best friend, and his brother. I was glad to see some reconciliation between him and the friend and his brother. Each of them had to grow as well, leaving their bitterness and resentment behind in order to find peace. I was a little disappointed, though, that the same didn’t happen with the son. I suppose this made the story a bit more realistic, and I understood the why of it. I just had hoped for a full slate of happy endings. At its heart, this is a gentle story about forgiveness, redemption, and about finding the things in life that are most important. The story is on the short side, and I wouldn’t have minded if it was a bit longer to flesh out the characters and their individual storylines more. It was also perhaps a bit predictable, but I still enjoyed its feel-good quality and had fun visiting with our intrepid angels again. “Shirley, Goodness and Mercy” was originally published as a stand-alone book, but was later republished in this anthology along with two other stories from the Angels Everywhere series. Star Rating: ****

Those Christmas Angels - “Those Christmas Angels” is the fifth book of Debbie Macomber’s Angels Everywhere holiday-themed series, which returns to its mostly romantic roots. In this one we have Roy Fletcher, a businessman who is deeply cynical about love and relationships following a devastating betrayal that affected both him and his mother, Anne. But Anne has come to terms with it and prays that her son will, too, so that he’ll be able find someone he can truly love and trust. Her prayer request lands on the desk of the archangel, Gabriel, who assigns Shirley, Goodness and Mercy to the case. They’re thrilled to be matchmaking again, but initially disagree over who would be the best match for Roy. Then along comes Julie Wilcoff, the daughter of Roy’s newly hired chief of security. Their first meeting is anything but cordial. In spite of that, though, Mercy thinks they’d be a perfect fit, so the angels engineer a little accident, which only ratchets up the tension between Roy and Julie. But eventually they find their way to a more romantic place that looks like it’s going to lead to an HEA if only Roy can overcome his distrust of women.

Roy is a successful businessman who several years ago had a serious relationship with a woman named Aimee. They were on the path to getting married until Aimee met Roy’s father, Burton, and from there, things went downhill. Burton and Aimee had an affair that turned into devastation and broken hearts for Roy and his mother, Anne, when both their relationships crumbled, and Anne was cheated out of a fair divorce settlement. Since then, Anne has picked up the pieces of her life and has reinvented herself as an artist, making a modest living, but Roy has languished in bitterness and cynicism. Anne’s Christmas wish is for Roy to find a woman who can love him for himself and who he can trust and love in return. After hiring a new head of security, Roy has a chance meeting with the man’s daughter, Julie, in which he’s pretty rude about her presence on his property. From there, the angel trio creates an accident in which Julie is thrown from her bike and it appears that Roy may have hit her with his car. The two argue incessantly over who was at fault, and although he admits no wrongdoing, Roy decides to head off an expected lawsuit by paying Julie off. Incensed that he would be so distrustful, she refuses his money, and gradually Roy starts to open his heart to her, thinking that she really is different. Romance begins to blossom, but when Julie refuses an offer to move in with Roy, his old tendency to distrust starts rearing its ugly head again, leading to a breakup in need of a Christmas miracle to get their relationship back on track. Although Roy has good reasons for being so cynical, I had a hard time really liking him because he takes it to a level that’s pretty sexist, lumping all women into the lying, cheating category with his ex. He’s emotionally closed off, and when in a pique of anger, can say some rather mean things. The only thing that saved his character for me is that he has a few softer, more vulnerable moments, and he does eventually come to his senses. But I would have liked it even better if he’d groveled a bit more once he did.

Julie is a PE teacher and soccer coach who’s been very athletic all her life. She’s quite tall and larger-boned for a woman, so she’s never had the male attention that her more petite, prettier sister did. She recently lost her mother and has been living with her dad ever since to help him out with the bills and to find comfort in their shared grief. Her father is finally ready to go back to work and gets hired by Roy to head up security at Fletcher Industries. Julie first meets Roy when she carpools part-way to work with her father, who drops her off in front of the building so she can bike the rest of the way. Roy rudely questions her presence there, leaving the impression that he’s an ogre. Then later there’s the bike accident. When Julie receives the settlement offer in the mail, she’s incensed, marching right into Roy’s office to give him a piece of her mind, which only gets her forcibly thrown out of the building. However, as time goes on, she and Roy start to come to an understanding, which leads to friendship and a little romance. But when Julie refuses his offer to move in with him, he thinks she’s angling for more money. After trying to reason with him and getting nowhere, she’s finally had enough, leaving the angels with their work cut out for them getting these two back together in time for Christmas. Julie is a tough cookie who’s weathered through the death of her mother admirably. She’s a bit of a spitfire who doesn’t put up with Roy’s shenanigans, but she also recognizes how hurt he was in the past and tries to help him overcome that by being a good person and proving she doesn’t want his money. I’m not sure if I could have dealt with his cynical nature as long as she did, but I admire her for staying true to herself, which eventually was what turned Roy around.

“Those Christmas Angels” was a pretty good read. I felt like the romance between Roy and Julie could have been developed a little better by either making the book a bit longer or by paring down Anne’s part in it. Roy’s mom gets a decent amount of page time and POV scenes in her own little subplot. After Shirley allows Anne to see her, the woman paints an angel, which her friend, who’s an art dealer, works on selling for her. I liked how Anne and Roy were able to find a bit of karma through that part of the story, but it did take away from Roy and Julie’s time together. The story takes place over only a month’s time, so their romance is a bit quick for two people who start out basically hating each other to come to a point of, not just falling in love, but being ready for marriage as well. However, the magic that the angels bring to the story and its generally heartwarming nature helped me to suspend disbelief to some extent. I just wish they’d had a few more scenes together to build both their characterizations and their romantic connection. Overall, I liked the story despite it’s extremely prickly hero and I enjoyed having another visit with Shirley, Goodness and Mercy who, while still rather mischievous, seemed a little better behaved this time around.:-) Star Rating: ****

*Where Angels Go - “Where Angels Go” is the sixth book in Debbie Macomber’s Angels Everywhere series featuring the mischievous angel trio of Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy. The last couple of books in the series only had a single storyline that all three angels worked on together, but this one takes the series back to its roots with each angel working on a different case and occasionally coming together to offer advice. As always, the archangel Gabriel is overwhelmed with prayer requests during the holiday season, so he decides to send Prayer Ambassadors Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy to handle three of them. In the beginning this threesome often got into trouble, but over time, Gabriel has come to trust them more and rely on them in spite of the mischief they can sometimes get into.

Mercy is sent to work with elderly couple Harry and Rosalie. Harry has a bad heart and knows that his time on Earth is drawing to a close, and according to his doctor, it could be any day. With Rosalie becoming more forgetful, he wants to make sure that she’s taken care of when he passes on. He’s found a nice assisted living facility where many of their old friends now live, but convincing Rosalie to move out of the home they’ve shared for most of their lives is proving to be difficult. Harry asks for divine intervention to help Rosalie come to terms with it, so that he can pass on with peace of mind. This is a bittersweet little story, sweet because of how much Harry and Rosalie still love each other after all their many years together, but bitter because the life they’ve shared is about to end. I admired their devotion to one another and shed a few tears at the end even though I knew what was coming and it was rendered as gently as possible.

Gabriel receives a prayer request from Beth’s mother that she’ll be able to move on from her divorce and find a man to share her life with, and he tasks Goodness with making it happen. Beth got married young, and the couple’s shared immaturity prematurely ended their union. However, despite nine years having passed, Beth still finds it difficult to move on and hasn’t had much luck dating other men. For the last several months, she’s been involved in online gaming, playing World of Warcraft, where she’s found the perfect game partner. When her mother starts pestering her about bringing a guy home for Christmas, Beth starts to wonder if Peter, the man she’s been playing the game with, could be a potential life partner as well. They begin sharing more personal information, and when she discovers that he lives in Seattle, too, they make plans to meet in person. But upon coming face-to-face, she realizes he’s someone she already knows and isn’t sure a relationship will work out after all. Out of the three stories in this book, this is the only one that has a more traditional romance plot. But despite that, I think it may have been my least favorite. It’s not that I didn’t like. I did, but somehow it seemed a little underdeveloped for a romance. The magic that the angels bring to the story made it a bit more believable, but IMHO, there still wasn’t quite enough time for Beth and Peter to really come to a reconciliation. There also weren’t enough pages to develop a deep emotional connection between them.

The final storyline is Shirley’s. She’s sent to Earth to answer the prayer of Carter, a little boy who desperately wants a dog for Christmas. His parents have been promising him one, but due to financial hardships, they’ve had to, once again, turn him down. Then Carter finds a stray dog on the playground at school, which he names Rusty. The dog miraculously follows him home, and he thinks that if he pleads his case, his parents might let him keep Rusty. Unfortunately his dad is adamant that Rusty will have to go to the shelter, but Rusty’s heroic actions just might change his mind. This was a super-sweet story, that while somewhat predictable, ended up being my favorite. Maybe it’s because I’m a sucker for animal stories and cute kids, but I found this one to be rather charming.

As always, Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy can’t help themselves when it comes to their whimsical natures. They pull a couple of harmless pranks, all in good fun, but overall, they’ve matured as the series has progressed, learning to rely more on Gabriel and God when things aren’t going according to plan. Overall, “Where Angels Go” was an enjoyable trio of stories that kicked off my holiday-themed reading nicely. I look forward to seeing what trouble they might get into next in the final book of the series, Angels at the Table, but I’ll probably save it for next Christmas. Star Rating: ****

Absolutely fantastic! Loved this book. Three stories featuring the same three meddling angels. This is perfect any time of the year. Reading all of these back to back, made me love the angels even more. This is a big book, so be sure to carve out some time to read it.

Shirley, Mercy and Goodness, those three Christmas angels are back to help a ruthless business mend his life. Greg Bennet hates Christmas. Three times divorced and owner of a vineyard that has gone under. About to lose his business, Greg does not have time for sentimentality. But three irresponsible angels descend from heaven to help him mend his life.

This is a trio of good feel stories starring Shirley, Mercy and Goodness.
I love this series of angel stories and Debbie Macomber knows how to tell it well.
The book always helps me get into the Christmas spirit.

I read these stories aloud to my husband. We especially loved the third story. We both got emotional and cried by the end. I didn’t care for the repeated mentions of the weight of the woman in the second story. It became a bit ridiculous as if she would be seriously unattractive to any man except the man in the story. Otherwise, we enjoyed the stories within the book.

I enjoy angels Shirley, Goodness and Mercy’s antics during the Christmas season. Debbie Macomber combined three “heartwarming stories” where one laughs, tears up and dreams of happy times full of family and cheer. I highly recommend this easy to read book. (Of course I love non complicated Christmas stories).

I liked all 3 stories very much but was disappointed that in the 2nd story a character’s passion was described graphically and it wasn’t necessary! Having read another book by this author previously, I don’t think I will purchase another book for fear of being blindsided with more sexually explicit details.

Didn't want it to end!

Three stories involving Goodness, Mercy and Shirley - angels who are Prayer Ambassadors. They each have jobs to do regarding prayer requests that land on Gabriel's desk. I loved each story and was left wanting more in the end. A must-read!

Such a pleasant surprise!
At first the angels seemed a bit cheesy, but I appreciated the Christian aspects, and the stories were endearing!
Now I need to read the rest of this series! 😇

Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy are back to cause mischief while also doing their angelic duties as they’re put back on Earth to answer prayer requests. Choir of Angels is a collection of three stories in which the angels go on various missions to Earth.

Each story takes place at Christmas time and gives off a heartwarming vibe as the characters learn important lessons.

The first story Angels are all around us is about a vineyard owner, who’s lost everything and just as he’s about to hit rock bottom, the angels guide him towards chance encounters with people from his past, which will set him on a path towards redemption.

The next story is called Those Christmas Angels and it revolves around Anne Fletcher, who’s only wish is for her son Roy to find a wife. Roy meets Julie, the daughter of his new head of security Dean. Roy and Julie are opposites in many ways and their first interactions end in arguments, but soon they start to develop feelings for each other. But Roy’s stance on love after seeing the heartache his mother endured from his father, threatens to destroy his budding romance with Julie.

The final story Where Angels Go deals with three characters. The first is an elderly man named Harry, who’s time on Earth is almost up and he tries wants to make sure his wife will be cared for following his passing. The next character is Beth, who’s been divorced for 10 years, but still has feelings for her ex-husband. As she opens herself up to the possibility of dating again, a chance encounter with her ex has her questioning if there’s still a chance with them. The other character is Carter, a young boy, whose only wish is for a dog, but it’s impossible with his parents’ finances until a loveable pup enters their lives.

All the stories were nice, but Those Christmas Angels because I loved the relationship between Roy and Julie, and I loved also reading about how Anne became a famous painter after the divorce almost left her penniless.

Where Angels Go was also a good story and I loved all the characters in the story, and there were times where I shed a few tears. As for Angels are all around us, it was a good story and I liked how Greg was able to redeem himself, however I felt the story was a bit too short.

Overall, this was another heartwarming holiday story from Debbie Macomber. I love how she can write characters you’ll connect with, and the angels were the best part of the series, especially when they’re acting up instead of paying attention to their duties on Earth.

This was a wonderful series of stories that will have you crying, smiling, and laughing.

This book has three stories about people who need some joy and love in their lives. The best part of each story is the involvement of three angels who leave Heaven to work some magic in the lives of people on earth.

The angels are Shirley, Goodness and Mercy and you can't help loving them, even though they drive Archangel Gabriel a bit crazy.

In the first story, Greg Bennett is about to lose his business. He owns a winery and the vines are dying from fan leaf disease. He has hit up about all the banks for a loan but none has given him a loan. His last chance is his brother's bank and the two do not get along.

The second story features Roy Fletcher who has become very embittered. He has a thriving business but lost his girl friend to his father. Roy's mother, Anne, sends the prayer request to Heaven, asking for Roy to meet a special woman as well as to learn what is important in life.

The third story was the most touching one to me. Harry is an elderly man about to die but he is worried about what will happen to his wife, Rosalie, who is losing her memory. Beth is divorced from her husband and is very lonely. She takes up a computer game and meets Peter online. They are both drawn to each other. Then we meet Carter who desperately wants a dog for Christmas, even though his family can't afford to keep one.

In all these above stories, the angels get prayer requests and are sent by Gabriel to help fulfill the requests. The three angels are cheeky, full of life and laughs and so enjoyable. This is a great book to read in advance of Christmas.

Those angels are at it again, those three unorthodox prayer ambassadors-Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy are back on earth. Roy believes all women want is money but when the three throw Julie in his path it is the start of a heart melting and his mother Anne' prayer being answered. Roy has reason his father divorced his mother for a young woman, Roy's love. In a triple assignment the angels have to get a dying man's wife to agree to move to an assisted living development, get Beth off a computer game and start dating, and get Carter's father to agree that the family can keep the stray dog Carter names Rusty. Plus in another story they have to help a business man who is losing his business. Choir of Angels will have you laughing and one story brought tears to my eyes. Debbie Macomber is of course the author of the tales of Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy.

Three stories: "Shirley, Goodness and Mercy" Three fun-loving angels show up to help Greg Bennet, a man who hates Christmas, is about to lose his business and has spent his whole life using other people.

"Those Christmas Angels." Anne Fletcher went through a very unfair divorce five years before. She has managed his ex-husband and re-claim her identity as an artist. But, her grown son has never forgive his father for the way he treated her. Anne prays for a special woman for her son. Shirley, Goodness and Mercy set out to put Julie Wilcoff in his path.

"Where Angels Go." Each of the three angels get a different assignment: One is assigned to help get a divorcing couple back together. The second is to help give an elderly man peace of mid and the last is to help a little boy get his long-held wish.

I love all of her stories that involve the 3 angels Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy. They are so funny as they bumble their way to try and fulfill prayer requests before Christmas. They always manage to cause some kind of mayhem along the way as Mercy & Goodness both have a fascination with all things human and can't seem to leave things alone.
This book is actually 3 stories in 1 book which was wonderful to read. The first 2 stories focused on just one story line each while the last story focused on 3 different prayer requests for 3 different people. They were all wonderful stories and as usual Debbie Macomber doesn't disappoint in bringing the humor and wonder that is Christmas along with sharing her faith along the way. Its one more reason why I love reading her books so much!

This book has three stories. Shirley, Goodness & Mercy, Those Christmas Angels and Where Angels Go. The first story Shirley, Goodness & Mercy was okay - I just wasn't very interested in the story about a bitter man. I loved Those Christmas Angels about a prayer request from a Mom for her son. Where Angels Go is actually three different stories in one where each angel, Shirley, Goodness & Mercy have a prayer request to answer before Christmas. Those stories were all interesting. My rating is because of story #1.

I tried to rate this book a 3 1/2 but for some reason I can never get the ratings to take a half.

Choir of Angels is a book with 3 short stories in it. They all have three angels Shirley, Goodness and Mercy in them. These 3 angels are sent down from heaven to help answer prayers. I really enjoyed reading these heart warming stories the angels all have great personalities and even though they are angels they are not perfect. If you like Hallmark movies you will enjoy these Christmas stories.
The first story I read and went through pretty fast. Then I felt the 2nd and 3rd short story seemed to drag on a bit for me.

Simple read and with character/angels like Shirley Goodness and Mercy, I wasn't sure how much I would get out of this book. But it stuck with me with lots of good quotes to remember such as "Happiness is a condition of mind - not circumstances." "Some people were unable to move past pain inflicted by others" and they end up lashing out at all they meet. "For every loss there is a gain." The stories drew me in. Enjoyable quick read.

The antics of these angels - Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy - touched my heart and had me laughing. No one was free of their well-meant, but sometimes misplaced tampering - not a little boy, not a divorced man, not a pretty young lady, or an older gentleman. And as the antics of the angels played out, I came to care for them and those they cared for - and to wonder if some of those crazy moments in my life might have been orchestrated by an angel just like them!

Very uplifting!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It will take you out of your doldrums and into a magical story. It involves 3 angels who each have their own assignment on earth , before Christmas. I got my cup of coffee and sat in my favorite nook, and escaped for awhile each day, into this wonderful story! The book switched between the 3 different Angel's assignments. Each story was well written and interesting to read. For a heartwarming escape, I recommend this book.

Book was a gift from my husband who didn't notice it was short stories and probably wouldn't have remembered that I am not a big fan of short stories. But though not a reader himself did recognize that Debbie Macomber is a well-known author. He might have even remembered that I had read some of her books before. But she is a good author and I enjoyed the stories more than I expected. And I knew that they would be safe from gratuitous sex.

I have read a few of Debbie Macomber's Christmas stories featuring the angels Shirley, Goodness and Mercy and really enjoy them. They manage once again to successfully accomplish their prayer missions which vary from finding true love to securing a puppy for a little boy. These stories are perfect heart warming stories for the holiday season.

This is a fun bit of fluff for Christmastime; and I love the idea that “Shirley, Goodness, and Kindness” are the names of the Christmas Angels. It’s fun to read a gentle, heartwarming book when we have such horrors on the news every night! This is actually several short stories all intertwined, and they all have, of course, a happy ending with a suitable lesson learned.

Great Read

Shirley, Goodness and Mercy are off to earth to take care of prayer requests. They are always stretching the rules, but they do get the prayers answered. They are also very entertaining. You just can't read this book without thinking about angels who have helped you in your life.

Perfect Christmas stories!

This package of three stories are just what I needed as Christmas approaches. I had read some of the angel stories years ago, and I enjoyed revisiting old friends. These are stories of hope and love. They remind the reader that God answers prayers and works in our lives. Definitely nice “feel good” stories.
