The Triune's attention is a deadly thing to attract. The world's oldest and most powerful vampire queens devise a plan to ensure the fledgling Isador queen is eliminated before she can call enough Blood to protect her.
But Shara has already drawn formidable and famously powerful Blood to her side: Leviathan, king of the depths. Guillaume de Payne, the headless Templar knight. Wu Tien Xin, the silent invisible assassin. Nevarre, the Morrigan's own Shadow. And of course, her first two Blood, Alrik and Daire, inexperienced—but extremely powerful in their own right.
Though well fed on queen’s blood and well loved, six Blood are not enough to stand against the mighty Triune. Shara needs more.
So I totally just stole that sentence from the book. I read it and I was like “yep, that’s how I feel about this book”.
We are following Shara, a powerful new Queen who gets an invite to visit another queen in Mexico who desperately needs her protection. Why? Well, you gotta read the book to find out but I assure you it’s not what you would expect!
I think the books gets better and better. More action, more mystery. More “I don’t know what will happen I am so excited”! I think her previous books were easier to predict and even though this one had some similarities, it also had moments when I was thinking “ what IS she hiding?”. That’s some very good brownie points there!
These books have a total different look on vampires, and I think that is one of the reasons why I am so pulled into this story. I think the ideas are great and highly unique. It’s badass. Also add to the fact that’s it’s a paranormal reverse harem, just makes is even more awesome.
Read:18/11/2018 Genre: RH/paranormal/ romance 1st rating: 4 stars Cover: These covers are stunning. All of the books in this series are EPIC! Will I recommend: Yes, they are really entertaining.
Has gone a little down hill from the first 2 books in the series but still entertaining
At one point I was thinking ...OK THIS IS GETING RIDICULOUS 7 GUYS AND NOW A GIRL COME ON THE GIRL WAS A VIRGIN LESS THEN A MONTH AGO AND NOW SHE IS HAVING ORGYS ON THE FRONT LAWN...but the I told myself to just shut up and enjoy.
Intense, sensual and loving, the third in this series is another breath taking dive into a fantastic world of intrigue, loyalty and betrayal. The first two books in the series should be read before reading this one. Full disclosure, I did not read the blurb. I read the book because I have come to love this series and have already read the books several times over. That being said, I may have come into this book with a misconception when I read the title. I thought perhaps this was going to have some F/f kinky love and I was all ready for it. Spoiler alert...there is really not that much f/f. Maybe a little too much for readers who can not stand women kissing and a bit of petting to first base, but really, I was a bit let down with the lack of girl and girl action. Still, the erotic scenes are rough, primal and just how I like my sex. Five stars on the erotica alone.
Erotica scenes aside, the fighting does take precedence in this story. Not only do we get treated to some wicked cool protection rings, but some nasty ways in vampire war fare. I have never heard of killing through ants, but this was pretty gruesome. I loved the creative ways Ms. Burkhart comes with to combat the destructive insects. And along the way, she somehow manages to pick up another surly warrior. Each of these knights are so different than the other. They are distinctive and memorable. I love that about her character building. I can easily remember the characters and what they are like. They have different personalities and I can distinguish them through their action and their words. Or in this case, with the latest knight, lack of words.
The fighting seems to all be indirect right now. Testing the waters and seeing how Shara fights back. And specifically to see how much power Shara really holds. Each test brings about a lovely orgy to "recharge". I kind of like this kind of recharging of batteries. And as she recharges, she grows in power and needs more knights to fuel her. The last set of knights showing up in this book may be double trouble. I am a bit wary of the growing male harem. Because men can be as catty as women. When they have to share just one woman, it could be a problem. I am wondering how Ms. Burkhart will make this all work out.
I eagerly anticipate the next book in the series. Ms. Burkhart consistently delivers quality stories which transport me away into a magical world. The alpha males and female dominant in this series hits all my happy buttons. Highly recommended to kinky paranormal readers who enjoy a bit of urban fantasy and bloodlust.
* An arc was provided by the author. A review was not required and I gave one anyway.
So for book three Shara and her men take a pause in securing their nest to visit a fellow vampire Queen. A Queen who appears to be seeking help but Shara won’t know her true intentions unless they share blood and by then it may be too late. It was so interesting to see the world of another Queen, this time one descended from ancient Aztecs. I’ve learned that while there is some story the majority of these books are a naughty filthy and bloody mess. Blood lust is a real thing and Shara has many men to please. I was shocked she added three more mates in the book. I’m losing track at this point and I wish we got more time to know each of them individually, they’re beginning to blur. I continue to enjoy seeing Shara come into her role but I also like the evolution of each of her men as they each literally worship the ground she walks upon. Her men are always shielding Shara and eager for a fight, a way to crush their enemies and prove themselves to her by protecting her. Somehow she manages to find time for them all but even though I’m all about the love, I think enough is enough lol. I’m looking forward to the eventual battle that’s bound to come. While Shara had a minor interaction with some bugs sent by enemy number one, they have yet to both declare all out war until now. Looking forward to Shara building her ranks and learning to be her best Queen.
3rd book in the series! Why choose FMM. Lots of MM scenes in this one! The magical system is still gaining in fascinations. Most off the wall book yet. Some people are gonna love this one! Heavy heavy spice.
I’ve just become increasingly disappointed with this series. The premise is so endlessly generative and interesting, but, despite having all the ingredients to do something fresh and subversive with paranormal tropes, the series just ends up reproducing those same heteronormative relationship structures. Not only is the main villain the only lesbian that we’ve met so far (big sigh), but the “Rik as alpha” concept just falls straight back into a hierarchical and patriarchal dynamics in which HE is really the one in charge.
Also, for a book called Queen Takes *Queen*, I was anticipating some f/f action which would help break up the really stereotypical sex scenes we’ve gotten thus far. We get one scene, at the 90% mark, in which the women kiss while having sex with their respective male partners. I just thought that was unforgivably boring and, hmm, a bit cowardly? For a series that’s whole gimmick is crazy group sex, it’s really shocking that it only seems interested in depicting pretty repetitive scenarios.
I mean, at the end of the day, this series is lifestyle porn for anyone who wants to imagine a group of hot men removing any obstacle, however small, from your life. They not only fight your enemies, but they also make your coffee, pick out your clothes and dress you, clean your house, etc. Everyone is perfect, no one has flaws, and you are inherently the greatest, kindest person in existence. It was fun to read a few of these, but I don’t think the series has enough tension or plot conflict to keep me invested or to keep reading.
Their Vampire Queen reviews: Queen Takes Knights ❤❤❤❤❤ here Queen Takes King ❤❤❤❤❤ here Queen Takes Queen ❤❤❤❤❤ See below! Queen Takes Rook ❤❤❤❤❤ here
Joely continues to deliver in this third instalment about our Queen, Shara. I’m absolutely floored by the amount of details and research that’s went into these books. So far, this book included, we’ve met Aztec, Celtic, Egyptian and Greek gods and as a mythology fan I continue to be happily surprised with the amount of gods we meet in this incredible world.
As a reader we’re reunited with Shara and her Blood almost right after book 2 finishes. Since Shara embraced her destiny as a vampire Queen she’s faced attacks from Thralls, opposing Queens and from one of the gods. With her nest established she’s hoping to get some downtime, however, there’s no rest when war is brewing and suddenly, time of the essence. While Shara’s power continues to grow so does her court. She keeps calling more Blood and through a great blood sacrifice she manages to grow “the Morrigan’s” grove within her nest and thus, gaining more protection.
I do feel that this title can have a double meaning because even though, Shara only gets to know one other Queen (both in the biblical sense of the word and face-to-face). Shara’s newly established nest is about to be attacked so she has to gather as much protection as possible and focus all her power on the task at hand. However, Shara keeps proving that she’s a force to be reckoned with and that she’ll do whatever it takes to keep her and her loved ones safe.
There’s so much going on, everyone has their plates full and there’s no downtime at all. Once one thing is taken care of, it’s time to move on to the next, so Shara and her Blood travels to meet with the Aztec Queen, Mayte. However, Shara quickly learns that not everything is as it seems and she’s in for a nasty surprise. .
I know I keep saying it, but I can’t get enough of the character development in these books! In this third instalment Shara proves just how powerful, generous and merciful she is. She understands that a Queen’s intent is everything and that sometimes, it may be needed to omit the truth, even from the ones you ask for help. Especially in a world filled with scheming, backstabbing, politics and warfare.
This is the first time I read a book that contains any F/F action. I didn’t really have any expectations but I think that Joely nailed it. It was beautiful, erotic and it seemed to suit our Queen’s personalities which I loved.
So here's to the former virgin Queen, may she get her Rook in the fourth book.
WARNING: This book contains detailed sex scenes with M/F, M/M, M/M/F, M/F/F/M scenes, along with a strong adult language use, so I wouldn't recommend this series if you're easily offended. If not, I personally think it suits the world created here, and I don't find it cheesy or forced!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Not just because we continue to delve deeper into the world of Aima politics, but also because I loved meeting another Queen. And I really loved Mayte - she's a great, fierce character who will do what she needs to in order to protect her people. I can't help but respect that. And the way she connected with Shara gives me hope for what Aima society could/should be.
Interesting twist about Aima fertility, both in terms of understanding Shara, and also understanding why Isis indicated that the Queens would have to adapt or die.
So, this seems to be a really strong theme in fantasy/paranormal novels with female main characters. Girl is abused/kidnapped/ in hiding/ in the dark for a large chunk of her early life. She finds out she is a princess/powerful/supernatural who gets insta love with mates! They go on some adventure in a short span of time (like a month) fighting her past demons who made 11 of her 20 years of life a living hell. She finds out she is immortal/close to immortal/ her love interests are like 200+ Years old to her 20 (shiver at the gross visuals). And once she is safe and smothered from her dreams of freedom/travel/adventures she gets pregnant and starts her new immortal life as a mother. Straight from dark torture to being a mom in a span of one book or a series. Like dude. These traumatic back stories are for what? Drama? It’s unrealistic and unconnected in so many levels. Then you pretty much skip any time of recovery/ self growth/ adventure/ just enjoying time with your mate(s) to be a mom. In the scheme of things these girls have like no memories of being toddlers, lived a majority of their lives in the run/ in the dark, and then they skip over being independent or having fun to be a mom for the rest of eternity? It never sits well with me.
The talk of children in this book made me uncomfortable. I was so excited because this girl is finally getting to be amazing and smart and take on the world but it’s like these aspirations and adventures have to be tempered by her possibly wanting a family (be it planned or a whoops your pregnant during a very bad time in the middle of war or whatever situation you can think of where having a kid is not a good idea). She already has a family unit of friends and mates! Can’t she spend 300 years of her probably 2000+ year life just to be? Why does this girl have to have kids immediately? I hope and pray they this isn’t the premise of the next book. I just want one, just one series with a smart, intelligent woman who is powerful, in charge, and plain killing it-be it politics, business, love, and friendship without her becoming pregnant. It seems like such a cope out, I’ve had to stop reading multiple series because this stunning human is taken out of the action for her own good to rear children. What good is writing such a strong character if she never gets to use it solo? Is her amazing, once in a lifetime power only good for one villain? Perhaps this is just me and I don’t have kids but could we just stop giving our abused women the motherhood objective in their life with little to no previous dream fulfillment because she now has men in her life? These dreams are probably the only reason she didn’t go insane/stayed alive/ survived all those dark years- and you’re telling me she just dumps all of them in an instant a hottie with blue eyes makes her *want new things*??
If anything, put kids in an epilogue set 400 years in the future if it really is something you HAVE to have. But I don’t see this as an essential plot devise in most cases.
So I have not read a book in about a month.... it’s been crazy. I started a new job, well I actually completely switched careers, which has been stressful in its own, and I just haven’t felt like reading. But I have been completely sick this week with some sort of sinus cold, I’ve been miserable and figured what a better time to try and break my “no reading” curse and read a good smutty tale.
Anywho, this book was my most anticipated book before I fell into my funk, and maybe it’s being sick, maybe it’s this funk that I’m in but this book did not live up my expectations. Although I do t really remember what those were lol. I did enjoy it, and I’m glad that it broke me out of my funk (at least I hope it did) I just didn’t love it like I loved the first two.
I thought the first two books were just awesome but then I finished this one. Shara is really coming into her powers now and one a of stuff is going on. Between the magic, the constant attacks, and the steamy scenes you end up with an absolutely incredible paranormal RH novel that will be unable to put down. I need some of those trees too for my house. I loved and highly recommend it so it gets 5/5 stars.
Adding a woman (and fellow queen) to her line up, Shara is back and headed to Mexico. There’s some gruesome (consensual) torture in this one. This whole series is a fun ride.
Warning: Impressionable creatures that find blood in any form disgusting should think twice before picking this book up. This also goes for those that don't appreciate anything but heterosexual partners in bed.
I can't get enough of Shara and her Blood. Each story that's published is full of amazing plot twists that I would never have imagine in my life. They blindsided me every time and I can't stop wanting more and more. For me, this series is addictive and if I could, I may live in it just as a ghost or something to see things develop.
Not only the author does an incredible job at describing the even but the characters, each an every one, grows and matures over time in each book. I'm a sucker for good character development and this series has one of the best ones I've ever seen.
Without giving too much away. We get to meet Mayte and learn a lot more about her and the other one, Skye. We also get to see more intricate scenes between Blood. We have 3 new boys in Shara's court and 1 of them is already a big cuddly softy. Let's not forget the sex is off the freaking charts.
I have to give it to Joely Sue. The way she handled the Queen takes Queen actual part was done flawlessly and with so much hotness that I was melting at the seams. She not only had tact for this things, she can keep track of where is everything in one of those scenes when you have to read twice to understand the limbs location LOL
The title for the next book is already out in cyberspace. I'm flabbergasted and confused by it. I can't wait to see what Joely Sue will do for the next installment.
This book is the 3rd one in The Vampire Queen series by Joely Sue Burkhart and it was incredible to read. I would say read it now but you need to read the earlier books to caught up to how things are in the present. That being said, each book can stand on its own and if you don't mind spoilers just jump right into this one and go backwards. In any case, you won't regret it.
❣An ARC of this book was given to me for reviewing purpose Thank you Joely Sue! (*-*)
Book three in this absurdly mindbogglingly wonderful series
Picking up once more, straight after the events in book 2. Shara Isador, last daughter and queen of the goddess Isis continues to strengthen her nest (stronghold ) with the aid of her ‘blood’ alpha Rik, Daire, G, xin, mehen, Navarre and new addition Ezra.
Since the moment Rik and Daire entered her life, Shara has faced attacks from thralls, opposing queens and even a god. Time is of the essence and no one knows this more than Shara, with a blessings of support from ‘the Morrigan’ and her Nest made secure, Shara welcomes the thought of a moments peace. However A warning from a faraway Aztec Queen Mayte, advises this is not to be and the North American Queen ‘Skye's’ has plans to attack are gladly received.
Victorious in the attack that follows, Shara must now travel with her bloods to Mayte’s Nest. Why would a long established, self isolated queen want to become a ‘sib’ ( ally ) to a new unknown queen. The risks are many and the outcome looks dire but Shara, despite continuing to grow in power, does not have as large a Nest as Skye and will need as many ally’s as she can get in that battle that is sure to come in the days ahead.
This series continues to blow my book loving mind... this series is a veritable feast of a book, rich in plot, depth of characters and brimming with action.
There is no down time in the story and as a reader I was fully and willingly held captive by every page. More and more is being revealed about Shara’s individual bloods, it’s not gone unnoticed that each blood has his own trauma/trial that he has to experience before finding his way to Shara. That each member continues to get his own POV chapter, allowing furthermore development of their individuality so that they aren’t ‘lost’ in the harem.
Rik as alpha, continues to been the main ‘blood’ the fact, which I totally approve... he is such a fantastic character...rough, strong, commanding, considerate and caring but also the most vulnerable too... I adore the protective and loving relationship between Shara and Rik and that it flows in both directions.
I continue to adore the mythology that runs through this series too, so far we’ve had Egyptian, Celtic, Greek and in this book Aztec.... The addition of which is fantastic, adding another dimension... BUT MY GOD! I cannot even think how to say those names never mind spell them...
I am in book hangover heaven at present and I’m sure to suffer painfully ( and noisily ) until the release of the next instalment in this series.
This series continues to get better and better. Shara is the type of kick-ass heroine I love. She’s continually growing, both in power and confidence as a Queen, while still keeping the core part of who she is.
A big part of why this particular installment quickly became my favorite is because we learn more about the guys. About their past and about their love for Shara. Reading from each of her Blood’s perspective hits home exactly why they love her, why they’d kill for her and why they’d die for her. Plus, their clashing personalities creates some of the funniest moments (You’ll see what I mean).
I definitely recommend this book, this whole series actually, if you love women who fight to protect what’s theirs and the men who don’t hesitate to fight for the woman they love. A definite must read!!
**ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review**
I don’t know why this bananas bloody vampire series works so well for me but I’m three for three on gobbling them up. This was more action-focused than the first two books but Shara and her Bloods still had time to bang it out. And add a few more Bloods to the crew. And also acquire Queen Mayte’s nest, which also means there was an FFMM scene because blood and sex is always intertwined in this world. A lot happens is what I’m saying and I was riveted. I can’t believe how much has happened to Shara in such a short span of time and she hasn’t even faced her biggest foes yet!
That said, I still have some qualms about the representation. Xin’s characterization seemed to play into Asian stereotypes; for instance, he’s described as emotionless. Mehen is Black and I still worry that his character comes across as Angry Black Man, although it’s not as bad as it was in the last book. The Queen Shara visits is Aztec and I didn’t notice anything egregious about the way those characters were portrayed but I’m not sure it was done well either. Lastly, Shara is half Egyptian herself but she continues to function as a white character.
Character notes: Shara is a 22 year old half vampire, half god. She’s a cobra shifter and wyvern. Alrik is an 88 year old white Blood vampire, Alpha, and rock troll shifter. Daire is a white Blood vampire and war cat shifter. Guillaume is a white Blood vampire and hell horse shifter who used to be a Templar Knight. Xin is a 1300+ year old Chinese Blood vampire and wolf shifter with the gift of invisibility. Mehen is a centuries old Black Leviathan (dragon shifter) and king. Nevarre is a white druid raven. Ezra is a white vampire and bear shifter. Itztli is an Aztec vampire and dog shifter and his twin brother is some sort of dragon shifter. The Bloods appear to be bisexual but some could be pansexual. This is set in Kansas City.
Content notes: graphic blood, family planning discussion, on-page sex, MC’s body is spiked through with thorns (recovers), army of ants, consensual rough sex involving physical assault, past death of child (possibly possessed), past death of secondary character’s spouse/partner (car accident), past child abuse, past murder, Asian stereotypes, ableism, gendered insult, male pejorative, gender essentialist language, ableist language
Well what can i say. We got to meet another Queen and it wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. I like the fact that she's growing her bloods but we are getting quite a few now and soon it'll be really hard to keep all the characters straight. I like the fact that every blood has it's own creature and that they aren't any over lapping. I'm starting to guess at the future story now and I'm hoping I'm right.
