Soulless at Sunset is book one in the Last Witch Standing series by Deanna Chase. It’s a paranormal investigation storyline with a side of romance.

In Soulless at Sunset we are treated to a kick-ass witch who teams up with a shifter. Phoebe and Dax work together to keep the peace among the paranormal residents in New Orleans.

I found Phoebe to be an interesting character. I like her skills, her knowledge, her witch abilities, and her determination to find and help her friends. I also liked the interactions between the characters.

Soulless at Sunset is an action-packed fast-paced story that spans 48 hours in Phoebe’s life as she races to save her best friend, Willow.

I picked this up as a freebie. The cover grabbed me and so, I thought I’d give this series a try. I didn’t read the blurb on goodreads; before starting this book and so, I didn’t know this was a spin-off of the authors Crescent City Fae series. The relationships and connections are set up in the Crescent City Fae series by the time we get to Soulless at Sunset. Their’s also a prequel, Bewitched By Moonlight, to Soulless at Sunset and its not necessary to read that prequel before this novel.

I’d have had a better time, not felt out of loop and liked this more, if I’d had read the previous series first. I feel you need to read Crescent City Fae series; before starting the Last Witch Standing series.

Ha! Now that I’ve seen the blurb, I know this is a spin off...

Regardless, I loved this wild romp through Nola! Who knew so much danger could be jam-packed into two hellacious days?! I didn’t know what to make of Phoebe at first, but man, she grew on me fairly quick. She’s snarky and tough, and only those closest to her see the...I’ll say...slightly blunted edges to her personality. Her partner, Dax, can go into the swoony sweet category and kudos to him for holding his own with Phoebe, because this chick is a force of nature!

Overall, this was a highly entertaining read! I can’t believe I’ve missed this series and will rectify this immediately :)

This is a terrific book, I couldn’t put it down. This book has it all - a great story, captivating characters, a bit of suspense, and plenty of action. I look forward to reading more in this series.

I received a copy of this book from the author, my review has been voluntarily submitted.

Take a kick-ass witch who is a vampire hunter and a strong, good looking shifter, team them up and you have the start of one fantastic story! The team is made up of Phoebe and Dax who work together to keep the peace among the paranormal residents in New Orleans. They are assigned to watch over the doings at a gala hosted by Pandora who is the consort of Eadric Alcott who is the leader of the Cryrique hive. When Phoebe is given another assignment, all hell breaks loose at the gala. People are kidnapped and it will take Phoebe, Dax along with Eadric and his minions to try and get them back with both sides having a stake in the search. I wasn’t aware when I read this story that it was a spin-off of one of Deanna’s other series, Crescent City Fae series but you really don’t have to read that one first to know who the characters are in this one because it is explained as you read along. I loved how the characters were brought to life in this book by the author. They are more than just words on a page as you get to know them and what makes them tick. I am so looking forward to reading more in this series as the dynamic duo team up to fight what I’m sure will be many other more creatures of the night and anything else that is thrown at them. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a well written, entertaining, action packed story with amazing characters.

Surprisingly much more engrossing than I’d expected 😉

This was a very action packed, past paced story that spans no more than 48 hours in Phoebe’s life as she races to save her best bud, Willow, from an unfortunate end. The interactions between the characters was amusing, and I appreciated that the author didn’t make her characters without faults or prejudices (even if it was the usual hatred between shifters and vampires), plus the betrayal aspect was well done - even if it was a little predictable - and I’d say that I’m interested enough to continue on to book 2.

This book can’t stand alone. The main character seemed to have been an important secondary character in the origin series. It seems I missed the revelations and romantic relationship. So, I started this book and realize I don’t care about this character.

First in the series, and well written. The author has done a good job with world building, but the story isn't as exciting as expected. Solid beginning for the series.

I stopped at 212

This looks like a great book, and I want to finish it.

Due to the 2020 Covid19 pandemic, I'm not up to reading anything more dramatic than a YA teen rom/com.

I plan to get back to the book when this is over.

I'll never get tired of Deanna Chase's writing and this book is a perfect reason why. Soulless at Sunset is the book book in the Last With Standing series and a spin-off of the Crescent City Fae series. We are back in the world of Phoebe Kilsen, Willow, their lovers, friends, and acquaintances. In Soulless At Sunset, Willow, her husband, Talisen, and Pandora's, Allcot's consort, have all been kidnapped. Phoebe, her partner Dax, Allcot, and a various assortment of others work hard to save them all before Willow and Talisen are murdered in a sacrifice. There's a lot of adventure as they fight against and some romance. Phoebe even ends up learning to soften up to Allcot. They both had people they loved with their lives on the line and realized the best thing to do was to work together. This made Phoebe see Allcot in a new light. Book two of the Last Witch Standing series will be out in August and I can't wait!! Deanna Chase is one of my favorite authors and if you've never read one of her books, try one and I'm sure she'll become one of your favorite authors too!

This is probably a better, more engaging, story if you read the crescent city fae series first. Having not read it, I didn't feel drawn to the characters so the story fell flat. Pretty typical of its genre. Paranormal investigation with a side of romance. The ongoing subplots with her missing brother and relationships (romantic and otherwise) tie the series books together.

Right away, I was drawn in by Phoebe and her badass attitude. As the story progressed it became apparent that her attitude was warranted. I enjoyed seeing her prove time and time again that she was considered the top of her field for a reason.

I also enjoyed seeing the interactions between characters. These interactions are what really sold for me that this wasn’t the first book in a new world, but I can’t say I’m mad about that. Instead, I got to see the inner workings of a group of people that were already established. While it was confusing at times, it allowed the characters to pull me into their thoughts and lives faster than a developing character would have been able to.

Another thing I enjoyed about this story was the way that the two main characters tackled the mystery they were trying to solve. I always enjoy a story that does multiple perspectives well. Chase did a fantastic job at making these switches as seamless as possible, making it extremely easy for me to slip into the narrative whenever I picked the book up.

If you’re looking for a quick and fun read about supernatural beings, I’d recommend giving this world a try – but you should probably start at the beginning, unlike me.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

I re-organised my shelves and managed to delete some favourite books, so this is a re-add. It's too hot to figure out a more detailed review, sorry!

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

After reading the prequel to this series I was ready to dive in and see what was happening, The characters were pretty much the same, and more were introduced as the story progressed allowing you to see the full extent of who they are in relation to each other and their professions. The location is New Orleans and so far it has been nothing but a kind of drab backdrop.

New Orleans is about to become the center of trouble. Shifters have been coming to the city in large numbers and coincidentally vampires have started to be picked off in record numbers. Phoebe Kilsen, vampire hunter extraordinaire finds herself right in the middle of the war. But when Phoebe's best friend and the consort of the most powerful vampire in New Orleans goes missing, over the protests of her shifter partner she teams up with the one vampire she has never trusted to get them back. But it could impact her relationships for the worse.

This pulled me in fairly quickly and kept me reading with interest to the end. The fact that I listened as well made it easy for me to enjoy it on my daily commute so I did not stop because I had to go to work. Since the narrator did a great job I got even more enjoyment out of it. Everyone should keep the stories going when possible.

So overall I enjoyed the book. The characters were strong and started working as a team by the end of the book. Phoebe you we a gifted witch and fighter with an extremely stubborn streak. I don’t really understand why she was so determined to push Dax away and not get emotional. Dax let his prejudice rule his emotions at one point but quickly recovered. Where the book started to have issues with me was at the end. It became a little confusing with the 3 villains. Not confusing in the sense that I couldn’t follow the storyline but it just didn’t really make sense to me. The sorceress in particular at the very end had me asking what?!!? Then there is her brother. I don’t know about that twist. The fact that he’s moved on with his life, gotten married and had been fine being gone for 8 years. Leaving a younger sister on her own with no details. Granted I don’t know why he did it but geez did he never consider how that would affect a younger sibling? I’m worried about where that story line is headed.

This was a great refreshing spinoff. I loved the Crescent City Fae series and this addition makes me love it even more.

Phoebe is smart, quick, and just the type of friend you want in your corner when thing hit the fan. When her best friend Willow and her husband Talisen are taken along with the Master of the City’s consort Pandora, all hell breaks loose.

Its twists and turns as Phoebe, her shifter lover Dax and of course Allcot who will tear the city upside down for Pandora, race to find them before they can be sacrificed.

This book had me in awe. I think this is the best Deanna Chase book to date; and I love all her books.
There is a little bit of sensuality, humor, and a lot of suspense as the plot unfolds. Believe me when I say, there are some things that caught me off guard with this story.

I really am anticipated the next book in this series. The way it left off, I know there is so much more to come.

I’ve been reading Ms. Chase for a while, and while I haven’t read everything she’s written, I’ve loved everything I’ve read that she’s written. Well, this book just blew those out of the water. Not only was it well-written, I loved the complexity of the plot, the great characters, the chemistry between the characters (especially Dax and Phoebe), and the action. I literally read this book in one setting as I couldn’t wait to find out what has going to happen next. For some reason, I found the more serious tone of the book captivating. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t love her lighter books, because I most definitely do, but this one just seemed to hit all my urban fantasy buttons. If you are a fan of Ms. Chase’s and love urban fantasy, pick this one up; you’ll love it! Highly recommend! I was provided the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.

It's an exciting paranormal action mystery with a bit of romance. I've read a few books in the author's related series, so I was somewhat familiar with the characters and settings. This is the first I've read where Phoebe and Dax are the primary narrators. There was a bit of reference to past events and relationships that I missed.
One character who turned out to be a villain is shown in a sympathetic light, and I felt sorry for them. Tears always move me.
A few people are kidnapped or missing, and agents are racing to rescue them. There are lots of fight scenes with magic being thrown around. The book finds one missing person only to have them disappear again. Perhaps that will be book two.
Typos: sentence fragment ("He leered.") Uncapitalized proper noun (french doors), where for were (Then Allcot and Pandora where there.")

I didn't realize this trilogy was a spin-off from another set (Crescent City Fae) by the same author but it didn't seem to impact my enjoyment of the story or characters in this one. Based on Book 1, Last Witch Standing is an urban fantasy in the tradition of the kickass heroine, hunky hero, non-stop action variety and I was hooked from the word go. The witch heroine has powerful magic and a big heart which means she has a circle of close friends she protects and a few frenemies who make her life interesting. The hero is a shifter who also is her business partner and he brings brains and brawn to the party. The setting for the series is New Orleans which allows for all kinds of supernatural opportunities so I'm in for Books 2 and 3 for sure.
Readers do need to be aware that the language is very strong, the action is violent and the sex is hot in this one.

This was so worthy of the re-read I just did!

Soulless at Sunset has something for everyone with a starving palette for paranormal and a bit of romance on the side. In all seriousness, this is my second round of reading this book and I still loved it. Phoebe is an extraordinary witch with some unusual powers and her new partner Dax just happens to be a wolf shifter and I have a sneaking suspicion that they are mates but haven't admitted this to themselves just yet. Then we have the Crazy vampires, Eadric Alcott and Pandora in the mix and by no means should we forget her ex-partner and still bestfriend and roommates Willow and Talisen and Willow's dog Link. These characters are beyond incredible, the situations are intense and the action never slows down long enough to catch your breath. I definitely recommend this for your personal library collection.

Great start to this new series. Who? Pheobe. What? Arcane Paranormal Investigations Agent. Where? New Orleans.

Phoebe's all dressed up at a charity gala. She there for her friend not working. Well, she pretty much was always alert and working. She should have been more alert. While she's distracted her friends are kidnapped along with an important female Vampire.

So begins the most important case she's ever had. Along with her new partner and ex-boyfriend, her kidnapped friend's shifter wolf (a Shih Tzu dog) and some important contacts they work to unravel the deep secrets of New Orleans' PNR world.

Action, steam, romance, loyalty, and betrayal. The author gives us another exciting series I can't wait to continue reading.

Eternal life with your eternal beloved...what would you do to have it?

It has taken me a few days to ponder on this book before I could write a review. There is so much material here... kick ass heroine, magic, cop work, intrigue, danger, and love. As I think about Bandu, Alcott, Willow, and of course Kilsen I see something strong and good in all of them. What would you do for love? What lengths would you go to in order to have your beloved with you forever? Each of them has been asked this question and faced it prior to the book. But we learn more of what each of them did do, would do, and what those choices have made them become! Fantastic, thought provoking fiction paranormal read!

Witches on the hunt

Unbelievable start to a new series.
Phoebe is a witch with unbelievable powers. She is partnering with a hunk of a shifter by the name of Dax. They may work together but they have a thing for each other.
When their friends are taken, they must work to get them back but all is not what it seems. People you think you can trust, turn against you and then you find out why. Plus there is the mystery of what happened to Seth, Phoebe’s brother.
These questions will be answered and by the end more will come up.
Cannot wait to read more of this series.
A must read.

For me any paranormal book set in New Orleans is a hit, I call it the Anne Rice effect. And this story doesn't disappoint for a second. Phoebe is a bad*ss witch working for the government as a vampire hunter. Yes, in this world big brother is aware of the supernatural creatures and has it's own agency to deal with them and keep them in line. Phoebe's best friends get kidnapped because they are fae. She and her werewolf, sometimes boyfriend but always partner, Dax undergo a mission to beat the forces out to sacrifice her friends. This is a strong story with lots of action and just a touch of romance. And who doesn't love Vampires, Werewolves, Witches and Fae?

I have been provided with a copy of Soulless at Sunset by the author for an impartial review. This is the first book in the Last Witch Standing series and I just loved getting to reenter this world with Phoebe and her friends. This book just dragged me in and I was so disappointed when I turned the last page I just didn’t want it to end. This story just had me on the edge of my seat trying to guess what was going to take place next. I was just shocked time and time again and I just couldn’t get enough of it. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
