He has worked in educational publishing for nearly twenty years. Growing up in Ohio, Bruce fell in love with reading and the magic of words, and even back then he knew he wanted to be a writer. Books have always been an important part of his life, from buying used paperbacks to his first job, shelving books as a library page. He now lives in New York City with a plethora of pets including one dog, three parakeets, and an aquarium.

Full-page and double-page photograph spreads accompany interesting observations about winter and its many splendors. Since most of us are curious and wonder how certain things happen, such as how icicles form, what makes it snow, and what the most common sounds associated with the season are, the book provides simple but accurate explanations, thus satisfying readers' curiosity. I'm glad to know how those poor animals who live outdoors manage to survive the cold temperatures. How can species that are so much alike be so different in their adaptations for certain types of weather? With a little bit of something for everyone, the book also suggests six winter-related craft projects to keep readers busy--and to feed some hungry birds. Although it won't take long to read this book, it is written in an engaging, informative, and no-nonsense fashion so that readers will want to learn even more about this most wonderful season of all.

Bruce Goldstone's "Wonderful Winter: All Kinds of Winter Facts and Fun" is a beautifully designed book which could almost be described as the "Fist Picture Dictionary of Winter." With bold, large colorful letters the book goes from telling about the shorter days, and waiting for longer days as Winter lingers on; From thee Goldstone tells his readers what to wear in winter when you "go outside," and then goes into a little explanation of why the trees loose their leaves as they "wait for warmer weather," on the other hand Goldstone also explains why some "other trees...stay green all winter."
Goldstone also goes into the feelings of winter, "sharp skates" cozy covers, warm feet by the fire, and a hard hockey puck. He also shows the soft hat and a frosty mitten. Goldstone also shows in beautiful pictures the animals who sleep during the winter. And then he tells his readers the animals that keep moving, like birds, foxes, and squirrels to name just a few. Of course he explains that every snowflake is different and how icicles form. With big, bold letters and superimposed illustrations Goldstone also asks his readers, "What does Winter Sound Like?" Goldstone also shows pictures of a the winter sports that are fun to participate in. A full page is devoted to a "spin on the ice" showing the legs of a skater gliding along. Goldstone also shows how one can get out and about after a snowfall from shoveling to plowing. Of course there are special foods and drinks like hot cocoa that "Tastes" good in winter. With big, red bold letters Goldstein lists with pictures and words all of the holidays that we celebrate in winter in addition to Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa. There is also "New Years' Eve and Day; Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Groundhogs Day, Valentines Day; Presidents' Day; and St. Patrick's Day too. Missing from that page is the Jewish holiday of Purim which often come around the same time as St. Patrick's Day. After those holidays Goldstone prepares his readers for the beginning of spring showing a leaf/bud popping out of freshly fallen snow. A wonderful book to start discussions about the seasons and Winter in general. I hope that Goldstone does the same with Spring, Summer and Fall
Highly recommended for any kid ages 3-100 years of age.

Bruce Goldstone’s seasonal follow up to the popular Awesome Autumn will not disappoint fans of the increasingly popular hybrid picture book/nonfiction genre. His use of space in both photo illustrations and text placement make for an absorbing treat for the eyes and ears. His design is flawless; yet his text has an acknowledged error which he discusses on his website that concerns the correct name for a North American Bison which is commonly, yet incorrectly called a Buffalo in error. My concern is that readers who are unaware of the error will perpetuate the terminology. Overall though, this concern does not take away that it is a wonderful book filled with great visuals, interactive text and lots of great information on winter.
The book ends with some easy to make and do winter arts, crafts, and science experiments as well as a tease for maybe the third book “Spectacular Spring” and a hope that we will see it published soon! I would recommend this book for any school or public library. It is a great read aloud to groups and classes and it also would appeal to early elementary age readers exploring books on their own.
Just short of perfection on an author acknowledged error, great visuals with a popular topic for pre-k and early elementary students. I would recommend this book for purchase.

For a girl from Minnesota now living in Texas this was a nostalgic look at winter and what it was like for me as a child. Great cover with icicles and snowflakes. You feel cold before opening the book. Each section is introduced with a statement or question to set up what the pages are discussing. Different fonts and sizes are used to surround actual photographs of winter things, animals, and activities. " Winter is a season of Wondering an Waiting..." is the intro and then the author describes what we might be wondering about or waiting for. Beautiful photographs support the text. Two of my favorites are the one about snowflakes and the one about animals showing the buffalo. The page on what does winter sound like is great using words like scrape, crackle, drip with pictures to illustrate each sound. Loved the book, enjoyed the memories but would I go back to live-no way-Texas is my home.

This is a fantastic look at the wonders of winter that is both simple and detailed. It is adaptable to a wide range of ages as you can pick out just the facts you want to share, or read the entire book, which is not overly long. There are great photographs and interesting facts throughout. As simple as it is, even I learned some new things about animals - like how foxes eat mostly fruits and insects throughout the year, but then eat more meat (like mice) in the winter. Fascinating!
It touches on weather, plants, animals, how snowflakes and icicles form, winter sports, machines, food, and the various holidays celebrated in winter. It even has simple concept pages (like shapes) for younger readers. And at the end, there are instructions for easy crafts and activities kids can do. This book has it all!
I'm interested to read the author's Awesome Autumn and hope that he follows up with books on spring and summer as well.

A great nonfiction compilation of facts and ideas about winter, beautifully illustrated with photographs. A healthy splattering of scientific concepts included here, but mostly it's a celebration of all things winter. A perfect ending, and I love the winter project ideas included at the end.

This companion to Awesome Autumn tells readers about the next season to come: winter. Goldstone describes how "winter is a season of wondering and waiting" through many photographs and illustrations. Just like in its predecessor, Goldstone studies the season through such facets of the season as nature, clothing, the five senses, and holidays. He explains snow and icicles and such concepts as how animals either hibernate or adapt to winter's different environment. The book also contains activities to do in the winter. Finally, Goldstone sets the scene for a potential next book as "Wonderful winter makes way for... spectacular spring." Another excellent book for studying the season of winter.

Wonderful Winter -- Wow! I love that this book can be used for so many things in a classroom and in classrooms of all ages. You could read through the book just using the larger words and the pictures for younger grades or you could focus on how there is a main idea in the larger words and the paragraphs then provide the details. From onomatopoeia, to recognizing shapes, to the science of snowflakes, to answering questions students ask all the time, this book is packed with ways to use it and reasons for students to read and reread this book. Definitely a top book for any k-5 classroom!

Wonderful picture book about winter. It explains in an easy way about how snow is formed and what happens to animals and plants during the winter up north.
Really loved this book and will be using it to help in my passive program I am planning for the library in January.

Engaging flow of facts and images, but I have a fundamental problem with this book: it assumes that it snows in winter. For many places, this is not part of children's experience.

It includes pages that activate the 5 senses, such as what does winter taste like, sound like, and feel like. Features fresh and bright photography that will help to engage student views.
This is now my favorite informational winter book. It is just perfect for a younger grade introduction to winter season. Its engaging, especially with the 5 senses pages, and it large and bright enough to share the entire book with a class. It includes everything I would love to see in a book like this and more. The author does a wonderful job explaining how animals act in the winter, and I even learned a thing or two!

This is a great book to discuss all areas of winter. This book discusses when winter comes, the weather, animals of winter, how to dress and so on. Wonderful Winter is a great book for younger students to see the concept of winter.
