I picked up the habit a few years back of reading the "Enchantment of the World" books for the countries that I am traveling to for the first time. It is a tradition that has not disappointed once, and the New Zealand book continues to be excellent. I appreciate that right from the intro indigenous people are identified as the core of NZ culture, with Polynesians who eventually called themselves the Maori identified as the original discoverers of the islands. I really appreciate that perspective, and also all the details about unique wildlife.
Straightforward and informative take on a charming country described as "a cross between Marin county California and Hawaii" - though that picture of a weta (basically a grasshopper the size of your forearm) left me traumatized!
