Little Critter is having a sleepover at Grandma and Grandpa's farm! He's excited--there is so much to see and do. Join Little Critter as he helps his grandparents milk the cows, pick blueberries, and bake a pie for the contest at the Country Fair. There are many delicious pies in the contest, but Little Critter's pie has a secret ingredient that is sure to make it a favorite!
Mercer Mayer is an American children's author and illustrator. He has published over 300 books, using a wide range of illustrative styles. Mayer is best known for his Little Critter and Little Monster series of books.
Another Mercer Mayer book that all my kids enjoyed. My 5 yr old just adores Mayer and requests her books constantly. I read them at the breakfast or lunch table and even my 3 yr old twins get into them. We love trying to find the mouse and spider that seems to follow the main character around, they’re always doing silly things. Fun engaging themes that any child can relate to, a great addition to any children's library.
Basic Plot: Little Critter goes to visit his grandma and grandpa on their farm.
I love how detailed the pictures are. There are lots of little tidbits & details in them to have a small child describe. There's also some good humor for the adults as Little Critter describes having to help the adults because they can't do things themselves. A fun read and cuteness overload.
I love this little book called, Grandma, Grandpa, and Me by Mercer Mayer. It chronicles Little Critter’s sleepover with his grandparents. It’s realistic because it tells the story from Little Critter’s innocent point of view. When a thunderstorm passes through during the night, Little Critter crawls in bed with Grandma and Grandpa because THEY don't like thunderstorms. The next day, as Grandma Critter and Little Critter bake a pie, she reminds him that the secret ingredient in every pie is the love you put into it. I feel confident that children will love this book as much as I do.
Genre: Juvenile Fiction Grade Level: Preschool-2nd Reading this book was so much fun I felt like I was a kid again visiting my grandparent's house. The way they all work together to make blueberry pie, which can be messy and overwhelming, leaves many memories. I always enjoyed visiting my grandparents when I was little, but they sadly moved away. I highly recommend reading this book and the many different books within the series.
I thought this book was average. One thing I did enjoy about this book was that it portrayed the idea that the youth should help older people because sometimes we have qualities they've lost with their age. This book was a light read with some humor.
Mercer Mayer books are always good, but I remember reading this one with my grandpa and it will always bring back sweet memories-- just an all-around good book.
Mayer, Mercer Just Grandma, Grandpa, and Me Random House, 1985. $5.99 PICTURE BOOK Content: G.
This is two separate books that have been bond as one. The first book is Just Grandma and Me. Little Critter goes to the beach with his grandma. He explores the fish under the water, builds a castle and burries his grandma in the sand. He has a great time with just him and his grandma. The second book is Just Grandpa and Me. Little Critter needs a new suit so he goes into the city with his grandpa. They go shopping together and eat lunch, then they return home on the train. Little Critter loves being with his grandpa.
Both of these books are adorable. Little Critter is hilarious and my son enjoys playing I Spy with Little Critter’s pets who are hiding on each page. This binding is weird because there are two completely separate books. But Little Critter books are a big hit with younger readers.
In the two related stories in this picture book, the narrator--Little Critter--spends a day at the beach with his grandmother and one on a shopping spree with his grandfather. By the time the day at the beach has concluded, he's sure that his grandmother had great fun, but readers will also know how hard she had to work to keep up with him and make him happy. The same is true for his outing with his grandfather. Not only do they purchase a new suit, but he wears it during the movies and during a meal. By the time they arrive home, the new suit looks pretty bedraggled. Colorful illustrations filled with action and pitch-perfect facial expressions and simple text, written from Little Critter's point of view add to this book's appeal and make it a classic and certainly one that's ideal for reading aloud.
What I thought was cute about this book was the fact that Grandma and Grandpa seem to be having a much different time than the Grandson. Children see things with such a sparkling light on them. Social cues are not picked up on nearly as much(if at all). I love that it paints the picture of the Grand-kid having the time of his life doing the simplest tasks such as stirring the batter for the pie which normally would be considered a bore to the Grandmother most likely. Stirring isn't normally the highlight of making a pie. I think everything about this book is adorable, especially the illustrations and excitement.
This book was just what my son and I were looking for tonight. There are two stories in one book and it was perfect for us to practice retelling a story and using key details. I read the first story in the book and then he read the second story, then we were able to compare the two stories. Little Critter spends a special day with grandma and a special day with grandpa and it was perfect for comparing one another. Having two stories that have similar characters but different activities in the story make for great book discussion and helped my son identify some of the similarities and differences. Little Critter is such a great series and is fun and easy to read.
I would use this book when talking about community helpers and the life of a farmer or in participating with the county fair. I would have the children make sound effects and different movements for the different items presented on each page to show that they comprehend what we are reading and their recognition for that particular item. So on the page where he is milking the cows, I would have them sound out the MOO sound while acting out milking a cow. Also, this activity would give them practice with some motor skills.
It's interesting reading the Mercer Mayer books as an adult, after reading them as a kid. Because when I was a kid, I thought Little Critter was pretty funny. But now I read "Just Grandpa and Me" and notice that while Critter is having fun, every other character throughout the story is giving him the stinkeye. It could definitely be beneficial to point out to the kiddos that you need to be mindful that your fun isn't causing problems for someone else.
I read this book for the first time tonight to my granddaughter and changed the names of Grandma and Grandpa to fit me and hubby. I have to say I don't know who loved the book more my granddaughter or myself. She was excited especially when I read about the big bed and also about the blueberries. Look forward to reading more Little Critter Books
Little Critter go to spend overnight and the day with his grandparents. And as always he leands a toddler hand to them thinking he is 'helping' them. Spending quality fun time with them both. They even cook a pie together and enter it into the county fair and win the Blue Ribbon because Grandma's secret ingredient is 'love'...
Little Critter gets to have a special sleepover on his own at Grandma and Grandpa’s. He helps Grandma make her price-winning pie with a special secret ingredient and enjoys the county fair.
Such a sweet celebration of the grandparent/grandchild relationship.
Little Critter is having alot of fun helping Grandma and Grandpa out on their farm. He helps them get ready for the big fair where they enter his grandma's blueberry pie that he helped make from scratch! A sweet story about visiting family and helping out.
Little Critter spends the weekend with grandma and grandpa and has a lot of fun, milking cows, (he spills the milk) picking berries (he eats them). He enters a pie enter the fair with grandma, their's wins because of the secret ingredient, love.
This is a very simple book that young students would be able to learn to read. The concept is understandable, but the characters are little critters instead of people. This book is primarily for enjoyment and not to learn a lesson.
