Hi, I'm Paul Teague (writing as Paul J. Teague), the author of the Don't Tell Meg trilogy, the Morecambe Bay series of books as well as several other standalone psychological thrillers such as Dead of Night, So Many Lies and Now You See Her.

I'm a former broadcaster and journalist with the BBC, but I have also worked as a primary school teacher, a disc jockey, a shopkeeper, a waiter and a sales rep.

I've read thrillers all my life, starting with Enid Blyton's Famous Five series, then graduating to James Hadley Chase, Harlan Coben, Linwood Barclay and Mark Edwards.

If you love those authors then you’ll like my thrillers too.

I started off writing thrillers with the Don’t Tell Meg Trilogy which draws upon my 18 year career in radio journalism.

It’s fast-moving, high action and a bit racy in places, but it was great fun writing the story and I hope to re-visit the characters one day.

My standalones are ‘can’t-put-down’ stories where normal people find themselves in extradordinary situations.

I also write sci-fi and dystopian novels as Paul Teague and these stories are set in dark and sinister future-worlds.

I have written The Secret Bunker Trilogy, The Grid Trilogy and the stanadlone story, Phase 6.

-------- This is a corrected review. Originally, I was given the first two chapters only. ---------

Peter is not a happy man. Trying to make a baby on demand with his wife Meg has taken all the fun and spontaneity out of their love life.

It just so happens that his fortieth birthday coincides with a business trip out of town. He didn't exactly plan it, but when he met Ellie, he knew he was going to cheat on his wife. To give him some credit, he did weigh the pros and cons. The pros won.

It's not until after their little one night stand Ellie tells him that she has a stalker .. a dangerous one... that has been following her for ages. Supposedly there is a restraining order ... but that's only a piece of paper.

Peter isn't 'too' concerned .... until bodies start piling up.

Who is the killer? And is he next?

His best friend who just happens to decide to stay at the same hotel where he bunked in with Ellie? Is it Meg ... who once had an affair ... and decides to surprise her husband by following him to the hotel in the hope of mending their marriage? Ellie's stalker? Meg's old boyfriend .. the one she cheated on with Peter? Their marriage counselor who would love more than anything to have Meg for himself?

This well written psychological thriller is told in Peter's voice. I can't say I liked any of the characters; they all seemed to have major issues and just weren't likeable. The author, I think, designed it that way. It is cleverly designed to keep you guessing until the end.

I will warn the reader.. this is the first book in a series of three. So hang on for the cliff hanger..it's a doozie that I never saw coming. THE MURDER PLACE is the second chapter of this series.

Many thanks to the author who made sure I got the complete digital copy to read and review. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Sad story.

Pete Balley's fortieth birthday, he will remember for the rest of his life. Very detailed information, even sex is detailed. But he never have his cell charged. You have to be patient, action starts about halfway and goes on and on. Have to read the second book in this series to find the ending. Actually if you are 25 to 40 age group, might enjoy this book.

Now I’m never going to have a lot of empathy for someone who embarks on an affair. The promise of lots of bodies and the intriguing description made me want to read this though and I am so glad I did as I wasn’t disappointed. And do you know what? I even had a bit of empathy for poor Pete.

You would think the worst thing about playing away from home would be the other half finding out. Poor Pete though has a whole lot more to think about than just his wife Meg finding out. What should have been a night of pleasure ends up being one of the worst of Pete’s as well as a few other peoples lives.

There is so many twists and turns that I was well and truly gripped. It’s one of those books when once picked up you really won’t want to put it back down until you have turned that very last page. There is certainly enough to thrill and chill and I never knew what was going to happen next.

With plenty to shock and surprise the reader, Don’t Tell Meg was a highly enjoyable read by a new author to me. Can’t wait to read the other books in the trilogy.

I came across this book in a 12 book set on Amazon for just 99p! The reviews looked good and thought it to be an easy thriller read in between reads but I didn't expect to be completely absorbed in this story to the point all I thought about when I put my kindle down was picking it back up to carry on.

Pete Bailey is in a passionate 10 year relationship with the love of his life Meg, however things take a turn when Meg is struggling to conceive and the couple resort to IVF treatment in order to get pregnant. Sex turns into a chore and the spice is lost when time and time again Megs pregnancy test comes back negative.
Pete and his colleague are to attend a work weekend away where Pete meets TV presenter Ellie and decides what he needs to feel himself again is a lusty one-time affair with her. Only things are not that simple...
Meg turns up at the hotel where he is staying as a surprise for his 40th birthday only to be abducted by a long-time stalker psycho of Ellie's.
Pete soon realises that his infidelity has caused a chain of reaction that is going to change his life forever. Just don't tell Meg...
This book had me clinging onto the edge of my seat to find out the links between all of the characters involved, already I am so eager to find out how Pete and Megs story continues and whether they can remain together after the tragic events that take place.
This would be a 5 star read for me if I hadn't found some of it a little repetitive but all the same I was pleasantly surprised at how addictive this book was!

What was an excellent plot was ruined by the constant repetition of thoughts and ideas ... same thing over and over and over again. I feel the author presumed his readers were primary school children (or imbeciles) and he was trying to get his message across, albeit one wouldn’t lecture young kids on sexual exploits. It did get better over the last 30% of the book.

Too much back and forth

The story line was just too busy. Back story filling in the blanks of random characters.
Author get lost in his ramblings. Repeating random thoughts in the text.
I️ just really didn’t care for it.

This author is new to me but won't be a one-off. This is SO good !! I liked it so much and I really enjoyed his way of writing. The snippy little asides Pete uses appeal a lot to my sense of humour as well. There were some totally unexpected moments, too. I raced through it, sadly, as I couldn't wait to pick my Kindle up again and get on with it. You just know the proverbial's going to hit the fan as soon as he's unfaithful and can't help but think it's all his own fault and it'll teach him a lesson !! His work colleague is as bad...I think he has to be one of these 'sex-addicts,' just the 21st Century's way of describing a sex maniac who doesn't care where he's putting it about ! Pete doesn't approve of his mate Jem's behaviour, though, which I find laughable. No doubt he believes his actions are totally different because it comes down to quantity. Well, they're not, Peter.
I'm happy the story will continue in two more instalments at least with the same characters, no doubt. There's an opening to carry on with them to see what happens next for sure.
I hated he called her Meggy....that's horrible. Think I'd have dumped him on that evidence alone !! I laughed aloud at one point when Pete did something idiotic and I made the note 'pillock' and then, on the ensuing page that was just the way he described himself. I wanted to smack him upside the face, too, when he kept letting his mobile run out of juice......I did enjoy his observations about driving in bare feet. I recall riding a pushbike as a kid with no shoes on and that was the same....a bizarre, totally different experience altogether. You can't help but like Pete (and all the women he was ever involved with seemed to be really nice) though I despised his best mate Jem....I felt so sorry for his wife, Sally. She clearly put up with a lot with all their kids AND him, though I guess he was her choice....
He utilises commas a LOT. Now, I'd be the first to moan if he didn't use them at all but there is definitely an excess. To add insult to injury, a few times he needed one and left it out !! Speechmarks were another irritant. Especially near the end when things were getting very tense. I was livid at needing to stop my flow in order to place a highlight against places he either missed them or added them where there wasn't any speech ! Neither did apostrophes escape my beady eyes, either. They're always the most misused or missed out punctuation in e-books. For some peculiar reason he chose to write ass as opposed to arse in the American way a couple of times but further in he wrote it "properly." "It tried calling Sally on the phone" was supposed to be I or I'd, I would guess.
Overall, presentation wasn't horrible, though, and certainly won't put me off reading more by the author. The cover doesn't match too well, though. None of the girls featured were that age.
T'riffic book.

Good Story..

The Story is unique. It does however drag in places I got tired of being told how much he loves his wife.

Awesome book!

Great book with an even better story line. It was very well written - you got to know a little about each character as they were drawn into the story. It was such a great read that I was almost frustrated with myself that I couldn’t read it faster! Can’t wait to read the next one!

ADDITIONAL NOTE: I just read about the author and realized that this was Paul J. Teague' first book - amazing!

The cover of the version I read stated, "Beware who you sleep with"... But that's not what the refrain of the book is. It's "ANDROID PHONES SUCK!". Half the time you had to deal with the main character's phone being dead and his trying to find a way to charge it.

Don't talk and drive - you'll get into an accident at the least opportune time. Just so you know...

In a way, it's like the author was trying to reiterate common sense morals/lessons that any person with a head square on his/her shoulders would not get into anyway.

Another persistent tune of the book: even when you find a soul mate and lose any interest in the rest of the members on the opposite sex, IVF escapades will be the end of your marriage.

Seriously, on the final page of the book I've found myself asking "WHY DID I READ IT?" Well, it came free and it did kill time on the elliptical. BUT to think it could have been three days of reading something actually worth reading. Oh well.

Wait, it's a trilogy? GOOD LORD! Do people really chose to chew a tasteless gum more than once?

Took a chance because the story line sounded kind of interesting. Took such a chance that I ordered the sequels when people reviewed it and stated that this book ended in a cliff-hanger.

Results: Did not like the story of an immature, turning 40, main character who could not get it together and seemed to be continually whining about loving his wife even though he was sleeping with others.
The book can be a stand-alone unless you are truly invested in the plot. As a result, I only started the 2nd book to find much of the same rhetoric.

Final results: Did not finish the second book and never started the final story before deleting from my Kindle. My only regret now is that I took chance and paid for the sequels. However, I have gotten so many VERY GOOD free books that losing the $6 was not bad.

Pete Bailey was happily in love with his wife, Meg—until, one day, he realized that maybe he wasn’t. Of course, trying to get pregnant would put a strain on the whole thing. All this led to was nothing but forced and resentful IVF sex, which put them in counseling. Is it any wonder why Paul was all too eager to get out of town, where he encounters a sensuous woman?

This book had an interesting premise, but it was slow. Why were we hearing about another guy’s affair? Shouldn’t this be about Pete’s affair? All this guy does is whine about Meg—how much he loved her, how he never wanted to hurt, how he regrets what he did, blah-blah-blah.

This book was really not what I thought it would be, which is why I won’t be continuing the series.

It's been a long time since I hated a book this much. I can't believe I managed to finish it, but I have a very strong commitment to finishing what I start. The narrator was unlikable, and went on and on justifying why he cheated on his wife. He knew he shouldn't have done it, but he was frustrated...and he was unhappy... and his wife wasn't sexy any more...etc. He should have just said "I knew I shouldn't, but I wanted to, so I did.

This was obviously meant to be a serious suspense novel, and contained LOTS of graphic sex, violence, and gore. By the halfway point, though, it descended into farce. The only way I got through to the end was by picturing it as an Abbott and Costello movie.

I'll be sure to avoid this author in the future.

What a sad, sad book...

Brilliant opening chapters. Minimal characters. Gripping story throughout the novel. An amazing twist.

However, that ending... it brought tears to my eyes. That's all I'm saying.

Great book! I can't wait to read the next one in the series.

If ever there was an idiot

The story looks around like crazy, the main character is a guy who appears to be successful, happily married and in a great job but who unfortunately seems unable to control himself and has no ability to see logic! How he managed to reach the ripe old age of forty is a mystery. Talk about making bad decisions, if there was an award then he would be right up there on the podium. I don't think I will read the next book.

Going into the book, it felt like a very slow start. First, you're introduced to the character who already rubbed me the wrong way, then thrown into the whole dramatic event happening between the husband and wife.

However, in the end- even though I wanted to drop this book- I'm more than pleased I finished it. The book takes the reader on a trip of what if's and who must've's once the ball gets rolling. One situation turns into a major event which is only shadowed by the way the book ends. Once in deep enough, I couldn't put down the book.

Let's take a ride!

Don't Tell Meg starts off in a slow build like a roller coaster rising to the top of the first hill. Then suddenly your plummeting toward the earth, skidding around a curve, flying back up and down another incline and spiraling through the loops! The characters are thoroughly developed. I flipped between loving and hating various characters throughout the book. Read it.

It was definitely not what I expected, and I found the ending kind of underwhelming. Buuuut, it did keep me hooked up until then🤷‍♀️ I enjoyed it; however, it wasn’t the shocking thriller that I craved reading at the moment. Also, it was quite gory; often without warning.

This was a decent psychological thriller, with a bit of an overused plotline. When Pete, whose marriage. to Meg is on the rocks, goes out of town for business, he ends up having a one-night-stand. From there, the story starts becoming a little convoluted. I don't post spoilers, as a rule, so all I can say is that the tale gets a bit rushed toward the last third of the book, with the author trying to compress too much information into the final pages, this hopefully creating a nice tidy ending. Oh wait, this is only the first book in a trilogy? How much more can there be?

Meg Bailey (37, wife) worked in the probation service.
Pete Bailey (40, husband, journalist) & Meg seemed to love each.
But then Pete met Ellie Turner (TV reporter). Well!?
Meg & Pete had seen Dr. Richard Kirk about IVF. There weren’t having much luck.
Meg & Pete were in a couples group led by Martin Travis (counsellor).
Jackson had been murdered & Meg had been abducted.
What happened to Tony Miller & Jason Davies?

Warning: This book is for adults only & contains extreme violent or graphic adult content or profanity &/or sexually explicit scenarios. It may be offensive to some readers.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written who-dun-it crime thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great murder mystery movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

This is a quality thriller that I really enjoyed a lot. The complex story keeps the reader on edge all the way through, and when the revelation finally comes as to what's going on, the grip transitions straight from mystery to action without missing a beat.

The only drawback for me is that I didn't really relate to or necessarily even like any of the major characters. Peter, the protagonist, is somewhat likable, but even he is a little bit of a dirtbag. The fact that he recognizes it and wants to overcome it helps, but even then it's a little bit difficult to cheer for the guy. Probably five stars from me otherwise.

On his fortieth birthday, radio journalist Peter Bailey did a stupid thing. Despite, or perhaps because or, his troubled marriage, while away for a working weekend, he slept with a fellow journalist. Unaware of what was going on the room adjacent to his in the motel, he soon finds himself embroiled in a race against time. Did his wife, Meg, witness his infidelity? Who else was in the room with her at the time, and who killed the young hotel clerk?
As you read Don’t Tell Meg by Paul J. Teague, you’ll go along with Peter as he thinks about his past, and all the things he’s done that led up to his current predicament, while at the same time desperately trying to find his wife. While some of the flashbacks can be a bit tedious, in the end, it all adds up to a detailed portrait of a man who has made many wrong decisions in his life, but realized it too late.
The author saved a few surprises for the final pages that will stun you—or again, maybe not. An engrossing read.
