First sentence: Peanut Butter was scared. Tomorrow was the first day of school! Peanut Butter was new in town, but he had already made some friends.

Premise/plot: This LEVEL 2 early reader is narrated by an open face peanut butter sandwich. Peanut Butter is more than a little worried about starting school and making friends. On the day before school starts, Peanut Butter practices his walk to school, on the way he meets a few people who are also starting school: a cupcake, an egg, a bowl of soup, and Jelly (an open face jelly sandwich). He even ends up joining a soccer game. (Readers don't properly meet ALL the people on the field.) The book then shows his first day of school.

My thoughts: What a strange book. I say strange, and I mean it, yet even though I was never sure at any given time if I was "liking" it...I remained mesmerized by the illustrations. Each page proved interesting or fascinating. Even when the story was less so. The story, as you can imagine, isn't all that unique. The illustrations are.

Peanut Butter’s First Day of School by Terry Border. EARLY READER. Penquin Young Readers (Penquin), 2018. $15. 9781524784850

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ESSENTIAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

Peanut Butter is nervous about the first day of school. His mother is encouraging, and he finds many enjoyable experiences through the support of his friends.

A fun book! It is level 2-I for Progressing Readers, so many younger children can read it by themselves. The illustrations are photos of ordinary objects with wire added to pose them in life-like ways. The characters are food! Really clever, and children will relate to the first-day-of-school jitters.

When you think of FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, Goodreaders, do you think of food?

I mean, food as the "kids" who are going to school. What a wild fantasy here!

We're talking about students like:
* Peanut Butter
* Hamburger
* Cupcake
* Egg
* Meatball
* French Fries, and
* Soup

Due to clever craft creations and photos, the story sprongs along. Diverting if you're a kid who's a Level 2 Reader.

FIVE STARS, sure.

Eggs-cellent! The ending was kind of abrupt but overall kept in the style of the rest of Mr. Borders' books.

A cute little book about a new kid going to a new school and making friends even though he is scared. My little guy thought the pictures of food as the characters were funny.
