Sandra and Mirco Stupning have filled Low Carb on the Go: More Than 80 Fast, Healthy Recipes — Anytime, Anywhere with more than 80 recipes for lunches and sweets — yes, sweets! — that you can pack for work.

Low Carb on the Go provides a brief introduction to low-carb eating and to “good” and “bad” carbohydrates, and the cookbook recommends a doable daily 100- to 150-gram goal. So newbies won’t be lost with this colorful cookbook. The cookbook leans a bit on chia seeds, agave syrup, coconut milk, goji berries, dried dates and the like; therefore, if you live somewhere where you can’t get stevia, avocadoes or mangoes — much less dried dandelion leaves or coconut flour — just know that, while I would still buy the cookbook in your place, you’ll have to make some substitutions.

The Stupnings even tell you how to pack your salads and foods so that you don’t end up with a mushy mess by the time lunch rolls around. How could you ask for anything more? Packing up a salad the night before that remains crisp and beautiful for lunch? Heaven!

In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley and DK Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

I thought this was a nice book for what it was. I try to stick to a low carb diet and am constantly reminding people that low carb doesn't mean no carb. The part I truly loved the most was in the preface:

The aim of a low carb diet is to reduce, as far as possible, your consumption of poor-quality foods that are high in carbohydrates and focus instead on alternative options and healthy carbohydrates... A sensible approach is to eat fewer carbohydrates on days when you are relatively inactive than on days when you have workouts lined up.

I already knew a lot of the information surrounding simple and complex carbs but for someone just starting out, this can be very helpful and informative. I thought the recipes were good, containing whole, readily available ingredients which covered smoothies, dips, breads, baked treats, as well as a chapter on vegetarian options.

This is a great low carb resource!

This is a short, well illustrated book of healthy low-carb recipes. There are great photos of the recipes and limited nutritional information is provided (calories, carbs, fat and protein, but no information like fiber, sodium or vitamins). Examples of the recipes are almond milk, a green smoothie bowl, Asian noodle soup and coco chia bowl. There are LOTS of chia recipes.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.

It's not that this cookbook isn't a good cookbook, I think that I just came into it with the wrong idea. I've been trying to eat more low-carb lately, and Low Carb on the Go sounded like something that might have good recipes that are cheap, not too complicated, and low carb. And I suppose I mistakenly conflate fast with affordable, which is my fault.

But that leads me to one of my two issues with this book: a lot of the recipes are impractical for someone on a budget. I want to eat lower-carb, but I'm not willing to completely overhaul my diet or my budget to do it, which this cookbook seems to assume you will do. Many recipes included at least 3-5 ingredients that I do not have handy, and could only buy at our food co-op, where the prices are quite high. And these low-carb, organic ingredients are really the backbone of a lot of the recipes, to the point where if you tried substituting cheaper ingredients, it wouldn't be the same recipe anymore. Although, to be honest, I don't think substituting would be easy; I don't even know what psyllium husks are, let alone whether you can substitute something else for them! If I had the means to do so, I would love to overhaul my pantry and start using these healthier ingredients, but on my budget it's simply not practical.

My second complaint about this book was that the ingredients in the vegetarian section were, in my opinion, not very exciting. I am a vegetarian and I love food, and I've tasted and cooked lots of exciting vegetarian foods. I usually buy vegetarian cookbooks, so I get a good amount of variety, but with cookbooks where "vegetarian" is just one section, my biggest pet peeve is when the majority of the recipes are salads. I'm sure some vegetarians love salad, but for me, salads are a small part of my diet, and I want more variety to choose from in my recipes. In this cookbook, over half (I counted) of the vegetarian section is salads, and honestly, many of them seemed fairly unoriginal to me. That isn't to say that they're bad, it was just a little disappointing.

That being said, there were things about this cookbook that I really appreciated. I like how comprehensive it was about what to substitute to make your food lower carb. For those who have the interest and the income, the table of high carb foods and low carb alternatives is a great reference. I also appreciate how the book included information about how easy each recipe would be to take to work as a meal, and how they recommend doing that. I'm not much of a meal prepper myself, but I think that aspect is very useful for people who like things prepared ahead of time, and the many pictures of food in mason jars were gorgeous.

On the whole, I'm not sure how many of these recipes I'll be personally trying, because I'm not committed enough to being as low carb as possible to go out and buy 20 new ingredients, but I bookmarked a few that look interesting, so we'll see. But I think this is not a problem with the book itself, rather that it is a very good cookbook for a specific audience, and a vegetarian in her early 20s without a lot of disposable income is not that audience.

I am SO impressed with Low Carb on the Go! As someone who tries to avoid bad carbs, this book was perfect for me, and would be perfect for anyone regardless of whether they follow a low-carb plan or not. I love the section that explains WHY bad carbs are bad for you and appreciated the chart that shows you the common bad carbs, but then includes an "eat this instead" option. The smoothies look delicious, the bread recipes will come in handy, and the veggie-based dishes look AMAZING. I plan on using a lot of the jarred smoothies, puddings, and salads in my daily eating plan.

These recipes didn't have a million ingredients (my pet-peeve) and the directions were easy to follow. Definitely recommend this cookbook!

I read through this book and marked several recipes I plan to make in the coming few weeks! Yumm! I really liked that they explained the concept of this cookbook in the beginning. Everything is super healthy and if you love chia seeds you will probably love this cookbook because a ton of the recipes call for chia seeds! The only thing I would personally change about this cookbook would be to add how much sugar is in every meal. That’s definitely something I look at when cooking and this cookbook didn’t list the sugars in each meal. But over all this is a great book to help you meal prep for whenever you need to go out and just wanna take a fork and container on the go!

While I was excited to try a new recipe book, I was a little disappointed to find that many of the ingredients in these recipes would need to be special ordered or bought at specialty stores. In addition, the section for breakfast is almost all puddings, yogurts, and smoothies. Personally, I require more than semi-liquid breakfasts to get me moving in the mornings.

Overall, though, there are some recipes that I intend to try. Those include some of the bread replacement recipes and some of the snack recipes.

I have been on a low carb, high protein and vegetable diet for the last three years. It has successfully helped me to lose and maintain a loss of just over one hundred pounds. When I first started the diet, I was afraid of all carbs - growing up in an Italian home carbs were essential right? But they also led me to a weight gain and being obese. What I didn't truly understand was that carbs were not my enemy - it was the choice of carbs in combination with portion sizes (to this day I have a hard time with portion sizes and my kids constantly tease me about how much food I dish them when they say just a little please!).

Low Carb on the Go starts off with a great section on how low carbs is not no carbs and the difference between good and bad carbs. This is so important for all individuals to understand, whether you are following a low carb diet or not. It helps to understand the effects of bad carbs on our blood sugar and the way we feel overall after eating bad carbs (I am sure you can all relate to the crash and burn after a sugar rush?).

Variety is key to this diet - it can be so easy to get into a rut and then give up on following the diet. Trust me - I have done it myself so many times! Recipes can become boring, you want to stick with what works or you may not have enough ingredients to complete a recipe so you may just give up.

Planning ahead and keeping variety in your diet is so important - your body needs it! I liked how this book gives you recipe ideas for every type of meal - from breakfast to snacks to breads (yes breads!) to vegetarian and meat dishes. The recipes were easy to follow and are spread out over two pages. One page being an enticing photo of the completed recipe and the second an ingredient list and directions. Each recipe also contains a breakdown of the caloric content including carbohydrate count, protein, calories as well as many recipes have tips included to ensure the recipe comes out as planned. This is a great recipe book which will be extremely helpful in planning out and building on your low carb diet with its easy to follow instructions and simple recipes. It is a great starting point for those starting out on a low carb lifestyle.

Low carb doesn’t mean no carb! Great explanation of good carbs and bad carbs and other useful info for the person who wants to eat low carb! There are more than eighty recipes for low carb meals and snacks too! I am very interested in different ways of thinking about eating the low carb way. Even though I love to use fresh ingredients, some of the recipes here were not really good for me
because I don't like to spend time and money in the grocery store buying items that are not things that I would use again. Interesting book and great pictures make this a good addition to anyone's library.

Summer 2018, NetGalley advance reader;

Thank you to Sandra Stupning, Mirco Stupning, DK publishers, and NetGalley for the advanced reviewer copy of “Low Carb On The Go: More Than 80 Fast, Healthy Recipes - Anytime, Anywhere” in return for an honest review.

This book is a lovely copy for the purpose it has. There is not much here, though, which brings it above the mark of so many other dozens of books of its ilk, and so it’s hard for me to sing its praises entirely.

The pictures are gorgeously clear, colorful examples of the recipes in question, but I found myself constantly distracted by the color changing of the background pages. I’m hoping the later is only something that exists in the ebook early review copy as it detracts from the focus on the recipes and pictures.

Low Carb on the Go by Sandra Stupning

This is a quick read cookbook. Probably not one I’ll refer to for years to come BUT it has some really creative ideas for eating low carb that I know I’ll remember for the future!

Aside from the bread recipes, there aren’t a million complicated ingredients used. (And the ones in the bread recipes are there for good reason - to make the impossible- low carb bread!!!)

All in all great cookbook - lots of pictures and simple recipes! Love that most of them can be made ahead of time and store in a glass jar!

Thank you NetGalley for an advance reader copy.
This is my first low carb cookbook and I really learned a lot. The recipes are simple and easy to use. On of my issues is bread. I love it and don’t want to give it up, but this book has low carb breads that I cannot wait to try. I enjoyed how the author explained what low carb is and the healthy benefits one will gain from it. I look forward to using the book more in my quest to go low carb.

I would definitely recommend this low carb cookbook to patients, friends and family. The recipes are healthy and full of whole foods and plant-based ingredients. I appreciate that the recipes contain easy-to-find ingredients and are simple to prepare. I already made the delicious chocolate pudding and cannot wait to try some of the breads.

Thank you DK and NetGalley for an advance readers copy.

Not my favourite book I am sorry to say. I am sure it is difficult trying to find innovative ideas for low carb food but it came recommended by a friend who lived without carbs, dairy and sugar for seven years due to brain cancer. I believe that because she was a far better cook than I could ever be, I failed to make anything in this book taste as good as she did.

I like the book for the most part but low carb seems so limited to what I’m used to so don’t think I could do it full time.
There is a heavy reliance on agave syrup and protein powders.

I was recently told that I have Type 2 diabetes, and that I needed to limit my carbohydrate intake at each meal. The most difficult change for me has been at breakfast time. I am always hungry in the morning, but never have time to sit down for a meal. Instead, I grab something to eat on my way into work, or keep stuff in my desk that I can eat when I arrive. Unfortunately, the low-carb transition has not been easy to work into my routine.

This concept behind this cookbook is the perfect solution to my dilemma. It focuses on creating healthy, tasty low-carb meals that can be easily prepared at home and carried to the office, or elsewhere. I haven’t tried any of the recipes, but many of them sounded quite appealing, and there is a lot of great advice about packing food to maintain its flavor and texture until you are ready to eat it. There were also a number of recipes for low carb breads that could really make a nice addition to a lunchtime salad.

My one disappointment was that so many of the dessert recipes call for the use of stevia, or other low-calorie sugar alternatives. Although I appreciate that Stevia is a natural herbal sugar replacement, I can not abide the bitter aftertaste, nor do I like the taste of other options such as xylitol. If I decide to try any of those recipes, I will have to experiment with adding small amounts of sweeteners such as honey, agave, molasses or maple syrup, and hope that the test and texture of the final product remains appetizing.

But, that is a fairly minor quibble, and I am definitely looking forward to testing out a number of these recipes to help me manage my health over the long term.

I received an advanced reading copy from DK via NetGalley. Thanks!

This is a wonderful book for people like me, who do not have many low-carb take-out options where they work. I depend on taking my own lunches to work in order to stay healthy. This book helps me to try new recipes instead of always bringing the same lunch to work. The presentation of all dishes is extremely beautiful. For example, although it hardly takes any time time to assemble the ingredients, the Lime Mandarin Yogurt looks like a work of art. Right now I eat keto and the carb count in many of the recipes can be lowered even more, for example by switching agave syrup with keto friendly sweeteners. I cannot wait to bite into the Cottage Baguette or the Nut Bread. They look so hearty! The Oopsies are a genius replacement for hamburger buns. They are so easy to make and I have to admit that I would never have come up with this recipe on my own. There are even recipes to satisfy my sweet tooth, like the Cream-filled Sandwich Cookie with only five grams of carbs per serving. Overall I am delighted with this cookbook and can only recommend it.

Low Carb On The Go is a cookbook full of healthy, superfood recipes. The accompanying photos are very colorful. In each picture, the food looks like a beautiful work of art. I love that each recipe has its own photos in this cookbook. Being fairly picky, a lot of the recipes just didn’t appeal to me. I enjoy healthy, fresh recipes, but some of the ingredients in these recipes are not readily available in my pantry, are somewhat expensive, and were ones that I didn’t think would be enjoyed by my family. However, the book does a good job of discussing proper nutrition in the beginning of the book. I also appreciate that nutritional analysis is provided for each recipe. A lot of the recipes are designed to become portable by being placed in a Mason jar which are usually in most people’s kitchens. Overall, I think this cookbook is nicely done, it’s just not my favorite.

I received a free copy of Low Carb on the Go by Sandra Stupning in exchange for an honest review. This is a collection of dishes and meals that can be prepared ahead of time, transported as a brown bag breakfast or lunch, and dished up or reheated quickly. Thus, the “fast” does not necessarily apply to the actual assembly or cooking of the meals but to what happens when you’re ready to eat it. Based on the ingredients in each recipe, many of the dishes look to be tasty, indeed. I look forward to trying the lower carb breads!

The photographs in the book are appetizing; all of the recipes are visually appealing. I live in a medium sized city with standard-type supermarkets, so many of the ingredients seemed a little exotic to me. However, I imagine some of them can be found in the gluten-free section of the market and others can be ordered from the internet.

I follow a ketogenic lifestyle: low carb, moderate protein, and high fat. When I saw this low carb on the go book...I knew I had to give it a look. Some of these are higher carb counts than I would allow myself. Fruit, for example, is high in carbs, especially bananas. Overall these looked amazing. I am going to try the chocolate pudding as a treat this week. Some of these I can make small tweaks to, such as using erythritol rather than honey or other sugary substance.
Vivid images give the reader an idea of what the final product will be, also luring them in with the delicious looking results. My favorite part of this cookbook is the nutritional breakdown for each recipe. As a ketogenic person, I would like to see a net carb count though. They do not provide fiber amounts, so I am unable to calculate that.
Overall, I really enjoy this cookbook. I will be trying so many of the recipes.

I live in New York and I commute daily. I know what it is like to constantly be on the go. There always seems to be no time for food and not enough money for it. Which is why I think "Low Carb On The Go" is a clever idea.

The most notable take back from this book were the tips and tricks to a low carb diet. There is a misconception that low carb diets are the same as no carb diets and those who are unaware end up hurting their body. As Sandra and Mikro Stupning explain, there are good carbs in which the body needs in order to properly function.

The recipes are very easy and can be made the night before, hence it's accessibility for "on the go." The ingredients are everyday products that can easily be found in the grocery store. The only disappointment I had was that there weren't any new recipes or food combinations that jumped out to me. Many of these recipes can easily be found on pinterest or an instagram account dedicated to "health conscious" and/or "low carb meals."

I love this cookbook! I have been waiting to start eating low carb but I had no idea where to start! This is a beautiful cookbook that is packed full of information on how to start! In the first few pages, it explains what good carbs and bad carbs are, blood sugar and really an awesome rundown of the basics of why you should eat low carb. Then you get to dive into the recipes they are perfectly written to be able to easily understand they are broken down into servings, calories, etc which makes it super easy in case you aren't following low carb but are wanting to still count calories. The pictures are plenty and they are beautiful to look at. I love this book and i look forward to trying many more recipes from it! I am a mom on the go and it helps a lot to have quick easy recipes. I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for my review.

What I love about this book is the breakdown of good carbs vs. Bad carbs. Also, the fact that this is "low" carb and not "no" carb. There was a recipe for every type of diet, including vegetarian. These recipes were thorough, and at the bottom gave the breakdown of prep time at home, and if there is any at work; this book, after all, is meant for "on-the-go." No one would feel like they were missing out on anything, because this book gave very satisfying options. I think I'm most excited for the breakfast recipes, since this is usually my pitfall to my diet. Very well done! Thank you to NetGalley for letting me review!
