Billionaire. Playboy. Her brother's best friend. And her baby's daddy?
The last time I saw Joanna she was just a kid, following me around like a puppy dog. But now that she's all grown up, those curves make me want to get behind her. Make her moan my name. Her over-protective brother would never let it happen. But I like a challenge. It can be our little secret. Until her abusive ex-boyfriend shows up in town and ruins everything. If he even tries to lay a finger on her... he'll regret it. I'll do anything to protect my new family. No matter what.

How dumb can Joanna be?! 'oh he found my office number, surely that means he can't know where I am?' Has she not heard of the internet?! Not to mention, if you were serious enough to marry someone, they'd know about your family, where you grew up, etc. There is a difference between battered woman syndrome, and complete stupidity. Anderson, well I barely paid attention to you. The ridiculous crap happening had me skipping pages. Authors, can we please go back to being realistic about pregnancy? Cravings and vomiting at one month?! At this stage, unless you were carrying multiples, pregnancy hormones are not high enough yet to exhibit symptoms. Embellishing details does not make a story better.
I found this book free on Amazon and decided to try. I enjoyed the story, although Joanna was extremely annoying with her denial about Zander, and the risks she put her through because of it. Really liked how her brother takes care of her and glad the Anderson was also a good man for her. Funny story, with good suspense and drama.
This book ws decent, and I liked the overall story, but it didn't quite right. Like, dome details were off. For example, Anderson said he and Lauren had always just been friends and often did the gala thing together because of that snd wouldn't bring sex into the equation. He then later said they'd had a few flings in the past but not for a long time and that that was the reason he asked her to the gala. Which one is it? It can't be both. Tobias was an ass, especially with blaming Jo for not leaving Zander earlier, and it bugged me that Jo wouldn't tell him it to f*** off. I'm also sick of every single book I read having an ex-manwhore for a male main character. It's depressing. Just like a guy likely wouldn't prefer to be dating a woman with countless partners, a woman wouldn't be thrilled with a man like that. I'm not saying they couldn't be happy together, but no one would prefer that. And, it's in every romance book I read. I've got to find some new authors, because this is getting old.
Joanna was beaten by her boyfriend and shows up to her new job at brother's office covered in bruises, yet has sex with Anderson the same day.
Supposedly, despite being together for years - her ex knows nothing about her brother, where she grew up, etc. Joanna also claims that she left him with no clues about her whereabouts or current contact info. Yet, he manages to find her office number. THEN, she just keeps repeating over and over that he can't have any clue where she's at and that she's not really in any danger. He found her office number & says he's coming after her.
I've met teenagers with more maturity and self-awareness than Anderson's internal dialogue.
Even solid narration by Jeremy York & Kendall Taylor couldn’t save the writing and TSTL female lead.
Billionaire. Playboy. Her brother's best friend. And her baby's daddy? What can I say, I hate to be harsh but there were so many flaws in this book I lost count. The story line was okay but weak and the characters had no chemistry were also weak and very annoying.
OMG. TSTL. This h NEEDS to be bleached from the gene pool. Pretty doesn't make up for dumb.
I know battered woman syndrome is a real thing and should be taken seriously, but the author didn't, so I'm not going to pay any attention to it either.
'I thought my abusive ex was Prince Charming at first and spent years with him thinking we would marry and have a family. We moved in together and then he started beating me, but he kept saying sorry, so I stayed for a long time. When I finally left, I know I am completely safe from his psychopathic ass because in all those 'he's my everything years', I never shared details about my rich successful brother or where I came from, so he'd have NO idea where I ran to when I finally snuck out on him!' Um, hello... Wtf! She thinks he wouldn't be able to figure out she'd go home... Or she really NEVER mentioned she was from Chicago or went to school there... Or mentioned her successful brothers name... who might show up on google?!?! But wait, it gets better. The little fuck wit cleverly thought to block him on her mobile, so that would be that. 8/ Now, she's shocked when he manages to call her on her brand new OFFICE phone... Scary huh. You might think that would imply there was a problem with her logic so far. But no... The little fuck wit is insistent that the psychopath who CALLED HER ON HER BRAND NEW OFFICE PHONE IN HER BRAND NEW OFFICE IN HER OLD CITY AFTER SHE LEFT HIM WITH NO DIRECTIONS, and made all sorts of horrid threats as assholes of that nature do, would NEVER EVER EVER BE ABLE TO ACTUALLY FIND HER!!!! Cause who's heard of Google. And whose got a brain cell to spare on the thought that he already KNOWS WHERE YOUR OFFICE IS YOU STUPID LITTLE FUCK WIT!
So, the stupid little fuck wit is not only determined to go with the ostrich approach, but refuses to tell her brother (or the new dick she's riding - because there was NO story, lead up, anything to that. Just they knew each other once, ran into each other again, would cause HUGE problems if they hooked up, and they are fucking like 4 hrs later 8/) any of it either, cause it's not like the psychopath might take a run at either of them if they get in his way, so a heads up might be warranted.
Later, she freaks at a 'being watched' feeling. Called the brother for help. Then goes off her nut at him when he tries to get her to take action about any of it or take precautions. Mean while, I actually have issues with the brothers over protectiveness. When he eventually springs the couple, he slut shames her for shagging his BFF... when there's been multiple mentions of him and the BFF manwhore their way through life to date... BUT HE THOUGHT BETTER OF HER!
When she's faced with problems, she runs and hides... AGAIN! Then the psycho shows up and attacks her. She manages to get away from him, cause stories are convenient like that. AND SHE FUCKING HUDDLES IN A CORNER UNTIL THE NEXT MORNING WHEN THE ENORMOUS PLOT HOLES start to be stitched together and the security company, finally calls her friend to mention that someone broke a window in her home last night, would she like them to do anything about it? And she does this knowing she's pregnant and that she's been attacked and that the attacker is still out there and that she had a significant hit to the stomach during the fight... and that it was actually the neighbours making noise about checking on the fight that scared the psycho away, BUT IT STILL TOOK UNTIL MORNING WORK TIME UNTIL ANYONE CALLED A COP!
And that reminds me of the other thing that pissed me off. When shit blew up between the h/H-BFF/brother at the company party on Saturday night and they all refused to talk to him... The BFF spent Sunday getting his calls rejected and was determined to talk it all out ON MONDAY WHEN THEY ALL GOT INTO WORK! WTF! YOU'RE A GROWN UP! YOU ARE A BILLIONAIRE! YOU OWN A CAR! AND HAVE A PHONE TO CALL A CAB IF YOU'RE TOO LAZY TO DRIVE! THEY ARE STAYING IN THE SAME HOUSE THAT YOU HAVE BEEN TO BEFORE! MAYBE YOU COULD GET OFF YOUR ASS AND GO OVER THERE AND DO IT FACE TO FACE IN THE PRIVACY OF THE HOME INSTEAD OF THE SUPPOSEDLY PROFESSIONAL WORKPLACE?!?!?
Anyway, she went missing for a week while they were worried about the psycho and they were still too worried about the various tantrums they would all throw to call the cops.
Oh, and 3 days of violent all day sickness, followed by ice cream specific cravings, doesn't sound like any 1mth preggers symptom I've ever heard of. But, I suppose, we never really came close to reality with this one anyway, so whatever.
Joanna knows she needs to leave her boyfriend as his abuse is getting worse. She reaches out to her brother for help and to get back on her feet. When her brother offers her a job she accepts and runs in to her childhood crush Anderson who also works there.
Anderson cant believe Joanna is all grown up and the irritating kid is long gone. Anderson has never been a man for relationships but something about Joanna has him wanting to see where they will lead, however they are keeping their relationship a secret and when her ex shows up and puts her in danger Anderson vows to protect her.
Parts of this I really liked but Joanna at times came off as really immature. I think she wanted her independence but at the same time she made decisions that baffled me a bit.
This book was a bit all over the place. The conversations were stilted and left unfinished in a lot of places. I didn’t believe the romance. It was lust plain and simple. And the origin story for the female character whose name I can’t remember? (That’s telling, isn’t it?) Done in poor taste. If you are gonna have a violent background, fricking own it! Don’t use it for shock value and don’t do it halfway! It was quite honestly pitiful. And unbelievable to boot. When you leave a domestic situation and he calls you at work, don’t ignore that! And these situations happened way too often for her to just ignore. It got annoying real quick. The past violence could have been left out and the story wouldn’t have changed that much, so in my opinion it was all fluff.
She was too proud to accept the help that was offered and I found her reasoning to be immature and unreasonable. She didn’t seem to care what happened to her which made it hard for me to care about her.
But I think I could look past that (maybe) if the brother wasn’t a grade A douchebag. Victim blaming? Really? What century are we in? Come on! I didn’t believe he cared for her genuinely, I think he just felt an obligaiton to take care of her as if she was always needing him. And he did the bare minimum in helping her so yeah, douchebag galore. It wasn’t a healthy sibling relationship.
The love interest isn’t even worth mentioning, all he wanted was a good lay. This cover has absolutley nothing to do with the story either. It was the tropiest book I’ve read all year I think. And I love a good trope!
Main complaint(s) about this book, they’re stupid though really 😆, is that I don’t think the baby was really a big enough part of the plot to warrant the title, and then I also feel like this book just COMPLETELY skipped over some major parts of the plot, only summarizing them in the next scenes. Also, didn’t enjoy the female narrator (though she wasn’t unbearable.
Other than those little nit-picky things, this was an okay book 👍🏼.
I’m giving this book 2* only because I was listening it in audiobook and Jeremy York was reading all those male povs and I’m in love with his voice since I was listening to Devil’s night series some time ago. Joanna was just another totally dumb woman who was getting on my nerves all the time she was talking about her ex and things happening with him. 🤦🏻♀️ like how dumb you must be when you know he called your work number but you believe he doesn’t know where you are? Girl just wake up 🤦🏻♀️ I’m still somewhere in the middle of the book 2:10h to go till the end of the book but I Just want to slap her. Yeah she is not the dumbest heroine I had a chance to “meet” but she is definitely in top 10. Seriously the only thing on this book is her audiobook version and Jeremy York as Anderson. 🤷🏻♀️
rcvd an advanced reader copy from the author for giving my two cents. what an emotional read. we meet Joanna who is leaving her bf for beating on her. she has no where to go so she calls her brother for help. he insists on it plus giving her a job. joanna is a nervous wreck and when she starts work its even worse when she comes face to face with Anderson, her childhood crush and tobias' bff. first impressions arent that great since she walked right into him and spilled coffee all over him. Anderson is not looking forward to tobias' sister working for them....she was geeky, always around and completely opinionated..well as a teenager anyway. when someone walks into him and spills coffee all over his shirt, he looks up and is shocked by the stunning woman before him...joanna. wow...what a beauty she has turned into. she has him all frazzled. an evening supposed to be about crunching numbers turns into a night of passion between the two. hiding it from everyone is hard but they both know tobias will lose it. joanna is happy but one day answering her work phone turns it around...her ex...and hes coming for her. she brushes it off..for now. anderson is left without a date to the big work celebration dinner and tobias suggests joanna...what could go wrong? life turning upside down, joanna leaves her brothers and ignores him and anderson. she doesnt feel good and her mind is wondering about all the possibilities. Will joanna talk to her brother and anderson? will anderson be able to convince tobias about his feeling for his sister? will teh ex find joanna? drama, drama and more drama!!
I enjoyed this book very much, I loved that in here we have a case of home abuse and how the female victim took the choice to leave and how her brother was there for her the whole time, I also loved the idea of second chance romance after years but I don’t particularly liked how the author wrote about it, since the Female character just came out of a abusive relationship, I feel like her needed more time to absorb what happened to her, because there was a lot of moment where she was with Anderson and her mind keeps going back to her ex abusive boyfriend, and every time her ex did something of she felt like he did something she would just close herself in her own bubble and let everyone aside, in my opinion she needed more time to process what she just been through and then get in to a new relationship. One thing that annoyed the heck out of me was all those moments where she was not feeling safe and she keeps going out by herself, and not letting anyone help her, girl… if my ex had just call me saying that this bullshit is not gone and that he’s coming for her …. I would not think twice about sticking to someone who can help me, if you find wanna talk about the issue itself is fine, just don’t be fucking alone giving the chance for that motherfucker to come and get you girl. I understand that you don’t want any of this to me true, but at the end of the day, you WAS HIT, you was hurt, you black eyes was real, so just swallow you fucking ego and get yourself into a place you you can be safe girl…

The title is engaging and as this is not a first time read of a Nicole Elliot story, I was anticipating a good read from this story when I got it. It centres around Joanna who has just escaped from an abusive relationship with Zander who is an abusive bully and stalker. She seeks shelter with her older brother, Tobias, and he's more than happy to have her with him and ready to protect her. But she runs across her old teenage crush and Tobias's best friend, Anderson, who is amazed to see how much she had changed over the years and there is instant lust between the two of them, that leads to some very hot and steamy scenes within the story. The banter between the two of them adds yet more sizzle between them whilst they try desperately to avoid letting Tobias know about them. I did think it was rather quick for her to be involved with someone so quick after leaving the abusive Zander but, it played out well because of the way Nicole handled it within the story. More surpirses to come within the story but you know that I'm not going to spoil it for you as Nicole writes far better than I could even hope to aspire to. A really good story that I enjoyed immensely and will be re-reading in the future as it is so good. That s why I've bought my own copy as well as having an arc of it. I received an arc of this book and voluntarily leave my honest review of it here. DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED P.S. The two bonus stories are fantastic too - another reason why to buy the book!
This book was free so I’m not going to complain too much. I liked the actual idea behind the story. The H was ok but he was still kinda weak. I like guys that are alpha, nothing will stand in their way and the woman they want. He was entirely too afraid of Tobias and not just losing his friendship. I think he was physically afraid as well. I however didn’t like the h. She was tstl for sure!!! How dumb can you be? “lucked out and found my office phone number, he has no chance of finding where I actually am.” Really? He found out the phone number but can’t find the address?!?! What an idiot! She could have done something before their was a problem and time and time again, she refused. She didn’t want to do anything because that would make the situation “real”!!! Ummm, he hit you over and over before you left, how much more real could it get? One other thing that bugged me was the lack of consistency. In one part of the book, Anderson said he took Lauren to parties because they had only ever been friends and decided no sex was the best way to go. Later when he was explaining to Joanna about it, he said they’d had “a few flings in the past”!! Which is it?
We start off the story with Joanna a hard working woman who lives with her jerk abusive boyfriend.. She finally has enough and escapes, having no where to go she calls her older brother Tobias for help he does asking her to move & work with him she agrees living her past behind. Tobias explains to his best friend and business partner Anderson that his baby sister is staying and working with them. Anderson remembers her the snotty nosey always following them Jo.. he was annoyed with her back in the day and thinks she'll be the same now (oh Andy how wrong you are)
Joanna and Anderson meet a couple days later in the office with a coffee spill, Anderson is mesmerized by her she no longer that little girl anymore. The flirting between the two is hot the sex is even hotter.. and hidding this from your overprotective brother is hard and even harder when your crazy obessed ex is stalking you. On top of that she ends up pregnant!!!!
Sweet handsome tough caring guy Stubborn Sassy hardworking gal Drama No cheating Background chara Sexxx times Forbidden love HEA
Joanna fell in love with her dream boyfriend except after she moved in with him, he turned into a nightmare. He became controlling and abusive until one night she had enough and walked out. She called her older brother for help and he offered her a job and a place to live. Joanna crossed the country to get away from her ex. At her new job, she runs into literally her brother's best friend, Anderson. Joanna and Anderson used to tease and torment each other when she was a teenager because Joanna had a big crush on him. Now they are both older and sexier, sparks really fly. They two quickly let passion have it way with them even though they know her brother would be unhappy with their relationship. Everything is going great between Joanna and Anderson except for three things. Their passion has resulted in a baby, her brother has found out about their relationship and her ex has found her again. Will Anderson be able to protect Joanna? This is a good book with lots of heat. I voluntarily received a copy of this story and this is my honest review.
I liked the flow of the book but found it hard to believe that the female lead has such large insecurity in asking for help. However I understand that this is common among victims of abuse.
The worry of changing status quo to the bad often prevents folks in an abusive relationship to seek escape.
Our female protagonists manages to escape finally from an abusive boyfriend but is constantly terrified since the boyfriend calls on her office phone ( how the hell did he get her office phone number, one that was just given to her that morning) and does his version " Here comes Johnny!" "Taken " ( abusive boyfriend version).
She join her brothers firm (cause she hates charity and want to earn the money) and finds panty melting heat while meeting her elder brothers best friend business partner.
Steam and scenes flow until a resolution is finally found.
A lovely easy read. I am big fan of the accidental pregnancy trope especially as how a kid or a kid on the way can change how the parents or to-be parents think.
Trigger warning Physical violence against Fmc by her ex on page. OM drama. Playboy mmc. Wannabe feminist Fmc.
Would recommend!
I can't believe how utterly boring this was. Even with 2x audio I couldn't listen to it. Reading it was out of the question.
Fmc was oh so stupid. Mmc was oh so not honorable. Ugh reading both of there pov was so frustrating. It was not enjoyable, Infact it was irritating. The intimacy was not good too. I cringed so many times I lost count. There was no chemistry. No passation. It was SOOOO boring! I can't believe people are recommending this. Even if the book is not long it feels like years.
Spoiler ahead. The Fmc was so dumb that she wouldn't take her brother's help even after being abu$ed by her ex. The writer tried to weirdly pass this a feminism thing. "I am independent and grown-up so I won't ask my brother to protect me and I am so independent I don't need police." B!tch you had black eyes for a week. Weren't you independent the? This send such wrong message. And the mmc was a play boy "he plays hard" (his word not mine)
So it started off really good, it didn’t drag and it wasn’t to insta love heavy. But then you just got frustrated with the characters. Joanna kept playing off Zanders threats. Even though her brother , Libby and Anderson knew the potential danger no one helped her see it. Then the actual build up to Zander’s return was left flat. So he’s followed her to Chicago from Miami, broke into Libby’s house to confront Joanna but leaves after a few punches from Anderson? Couldn’t buy that. And where was the whole conversation about Anderson and Joanna’s relationship. It went from not sure what we are to I’ll profess my love to your brother but never you.
All the elements were there for a good read it just felt like you read the outline version with no meaty details to make it whole.
There was nothing really wrong with this book, it just didnt grab my attention. This was more like a in between book for me. While I love secret baby and brothers best friend romances, this one just wasnt very remarkable. Anderson didnt like Joanna when they were kids, but know all of a sudden he starts liking her because she has curves. It might have developed into more later on, but still. But I did love how he took Joanna's pregnancy. He was there for her and supported her. I liked that Tobias was protective of Joanna, but he went a bit overboard. He was starting to get on my nerves. Especially with how he reacted when he found out about Joanna and Anderson. Yeah, it was a shock. And maybe he had a right to be just a little mad, but not that mad. He completely freaked out and went in a rage. Which he had no right to do. Oh well.
I did receive a free ARC Copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review that I am voluntarily reviewing.
In this book we have Joanna who is no longer the little girl who follows her brother and his friends around. She is now a grown woman. She has an old abusive boyfriend - Zander, come back into town and is need of help. Joanna has moved in with her brother Tobias and his business partner, Anderson. She agrees to work for them so she can maybe get back on her own two feet and live on her own.
Anderson & Joanna have a lot of chemistry together. However, with being Tobias's best friend Anderson is worried about being with Joanna and possibly ruining his friendship with Tobias.
Joanna has left her abusive ex and came back home to Chicago to live with her brother til she gets on her feet..he offers her a job at his company and she accepts..when her brother Tobias tells his partner in the company Anderson that she is going to work with them..Anderson is not impressed as she was a pest when they were growing up...While they run into each other they are both attracted to each other..Joanna had always been attracted to him....They start up seeing each other behind her brothers back and when he finds out he is livid...But her ex comes and attacks her again not long afer she found out she is pregnant with Anderson's baby. She is afraid she has lost it but she didn't...A good little love story that was a fast read
