We already dealt with Gorou having a little affection for Fumi, so that storyline is totally over, right? And Fumi and Akatsuki are dating, so nothing to worry about, right? And that new editor, Uneda, well, she’s no problem either… right!?
This volume really works for me because it comes barrelling at its premise head-on for a change and everybody manages to basically do everything wrong, which makes for a clusterfluff of epic proportions.
Fumi’s a high school girl with all the insecurities that entails, so it’s no surprise that she keeps comparing herself to the efficient and put-together Uneda, who seems like an excellent match for Akatsuki.
Uneda’s also an adult; the reason this keeps getting out of hand is because Fumi and Akatsuki are keeping their relationship under wraps and Uneda therefore has no reason to hold back when she takes an interest in him beyond his work.
Fumi, being hypercritical of her shortcomings, comes to the idea that Uneda really is better for Akatsuki. So she just waits for the inevitable, except doesn’t bother talking to him about all this.
Her worry sends her over to visit Gorou, who is still being a friend, but clearly hasn’t given up on the notion of adding ‘more than’ to that appellation. Gorou tries to help, but he’s also not doing anything to sideline his own feelings.
Which Fumi doesn’t know about, but Akatsuki does, just like Fumi knows about Uneda’s true intentions while Akatsuki is completely oblivious (one reason this series gets away with its age gap is that both of the leads are emotionally high schoolers).
It’s a fun catastrophe. Poor Uneda is really nice and gets along swimmingly with Fumi, she’s just also attracted to Akatsuki. And she treats Fumi like, say, a teenager, which she actually is.
Uneda is innocent in all this the way that everybody else isn’t. If people would actually communicate, or, in Gorou’s case, read a room he already knows how to read, this could all be avoided.
Instead it explodes into hurt feelings on everybody’s part and, as often happens in these cases, they just keep hurting themselves while trying to figure it out. Which is what leaves us on that particularly nasty little cliffhanger, of course.
This is a believable mess. Whatever I think of Mika Yamamori’s work, and I tend to look positively on it anyway, she knows how to write really good characters. And draw them - Akatsuki’s permanent slouch is present in so many scenes. She’s really good across the board here.
4.5 stars - I wouldn’t say it’s quite worth five stars, but this makes for some delicious drama that is entirely reasonable in the moment and that takes more work to pull off than it might first appear. Good job.
AUGHH I HATE FEELING THIS WAY. BUT YEA, THEY KINDA NEED THIS. GIRL NEEDS TO SPEAK HER MIND TOO BUT YEA SHE DIDN'T CHOOSE THE RIGHT WORDS—GAH I'M SO FRUSTRATED RIGHT NOW
Kinda bummed about this but at the same time I have to say that I'm not really surprised. As what can be seen on common shoujo mangas, there will be a character or two inserted to complicate the relationship of the leads. Despite what I said on a few volumes before, this manga wasn't so different after all. It really can't be helped though since these story line are usually done to help strengthen the relationship of the leads in the future. Doesn't mean I like reading them though. 🤷🏻♂️
I'm not the biggest fan of the inevitable shoujo love triangle - largely because I very often fall for the wrong love interest - but it was actually handled pretty well in this volume. One of my biggest complaints with this series so far has been that the relationship just doesn't feel...earned yet. There's not a whole lot in the way of actual chemistry, and even though they're "dating" now there's nothing going on?
I don't mean physically, you certainly don't need to rush into those sorts of things, but it doesn't feel as though anything in their dynamic has changed at all. But maybe that's kind of the point?
There were some better moments in this volume; I thought Akatsuki taking photos throughout his time in Kyoto and sending them to Fumi was incredibly sweet. It was a way of including her in the trip without her being physically there, and is probably the most romantic thing he's done for her yet. Of course it got utterly ruined then by him calling her a child, which. Y'know. Is a weird thing to say to someone you're supposedly dating. Which ties back into that whole "how are they actually dating" piece that makes the pacing kind of confusing for me. Is he into her or not? What does he want out of this relationship?
There was also a nice spark of jealousy with him seeing her out with Gorou, who of course is kind and talks with Fumi more naturally, and falls into the secondary love interest who's a better friend to her category...
But I do think Akatsuki's temporary editor, who tells Fumi she's romantically interested in him, is interesting. She's kind and a genuinely good person, and she and Fumi get along really well before the jealousy pulls them apart. Fumi's right that if she'd met Akatsuki first, maybe that relationship would've gone somewhere instead. And that's an important defining moment for their relationship...because Akatsuki needs to choose Fumi not because she's convenient but because he genuinely cares for her for very specific and genuine reasons.
So hopefully it continues along that path and they deal with those feelings in a more concrete way.
Another issue of dating your live-in housekeeper who has nowhere else to go...it's pretty awful that when Fumi is upset and runs out of the house, she just has to sit in the rain because she doesn't have other options. It creates an unfair imbalance that really does need to be addressed in some way.
Of course, Gorou is there for the rescue in the meantime, and Akatsuki is currently looking like a pretty insensitive jerk. Particularly after he insisted Fumi share her true feelings with him and then immediately dismissed them when she did.
A better volume than the last few; I'd like more depth and grit to their relationship from here on out.
Akatsuki schnallt was Fumis "Problem" ist.

One thing I really enjoyed about this novel is that the author is staying true to your characters. Akatsuki is someone who is not accustomed to relationships, and she doesn’t do well. And even though Fumi is a good match for him, there is still a bit stressful that they are couple. I am enjoying the dynamic and look forward to future volumes.
Drama màxim i gelosia amb l'editora substituta, I'm here for it!!!! :3
Otro tomo qué me encantó.

Nice volume. Goro finally shows some desire for Fumi. Between Akatsuki and Fumi there are always attempts to get closer, but they end up arguing. Poor Akatsuki even came back a day early to clear things up with Fumi. Curious to see the entanglement between the four.
